fter years of discussion, the village of romeoville has decided that time has come to demolish and rebuild its busiest fire station. fire station No. 1, located at 18 Montrose drive, has been deemed too defunct to remodel, and plans are in motion to demolish the existing structure and begin work on a new station. While other locations were considered, the current location was chosen for its proximity within the village. “this is not a new project and one we have talked about in varying stages,” said Mayor John Noak. “there is no doubt the fire station needs to be replaced and needs work. Chamber redefines outreach New executive director says event lineup prioritizes membership value

The Romeoville Area Chamber of Commerce is working hard in its mission to get members involved and get noticed.

Under the new leadership of Executive Director Michelle Jarnutowski and with four vacant board seats to be filled by midJuly, the chamber is undergoing change.

Jarnutowski was named to the position in March, and she has been on a mission to connect members to one another and bring a more personal touch to the chamber.

“That’s what the chamber should be about.” she said. “I want our members to get value for their time and money, and make that connection that can help them in their business.”

Gone are the days of sitting at the table with the same group, Jarnutowski has put in place a system to ensure members truly mingle and get the benefit from their peers.

“So far the feedback has been nothing but positive,” she added.

Jarnutowski’s goal is to continue to grow membership and offer the tools and seminars members need.

In a mix of old and new events, the summer months are busy.

Several events are upcoming, including the annual “Pitch Your Business” luncheon to be held July 14 at the Edward Hospital Athletic and Event Center, 55 Phelps. Each business will have one minute to sum up what they have to offer.

Rather than the normal stiff pitch, businesses get to use skits or music and have a little fun to show off their company, explained Jarnutowski.

Next up is the “Captivating Business Presentations” from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 15 at Rasmussen College, 1400 Normantown Road.

This workshop is designed to show how to plan and deliver a presentation to keep an audience’s attention.

The chamber’s inaugural Cruisin’ the Square is scheduled for July 16. The “traditional” car show will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Edward Athletic and Event Center. Car enthusiasts are asked to bring out their pride and joy and partake in a community event, which also will include vendors, food and beverages, and

family entertainment. A second car show will be held Aug. 27, and the chamber hopes it become a weekly event next year.

Jarnutowski said the Rise and Shine breakfast is one new event that has become a huge success.

In response to members who couldn’t get away from work for a luncheon, she said the breakfast event was an attempt to reach more members. The next Rise and Shine will be held from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Aug. 18 at the Prairie Golf Club.

In partnership with the village, the chamber will hold a presentation on Interstate 55 and Weber Road’s impact on area businesses. The event is open to members and nonmembers.

Additionally, the chamber’s annual golf outing will be held Aug. 26 at the Bolingbrook Golf Club. As the chamber’s premier event, the golf outing will be take on a new vibe this year with a “nine and dine” theme. Hoping to free up time for those who can’t get away from the office for a full 18 holes, attendees will play nine holes in the afternoon and end the day with dinner.

“We are very excited about all of our events and the chamber in general, and we want people to become involved as much as they can,” said Jarnutowski.

As lawmakers battle over the budget impasse, local legislators and constituents are left to grapple with the ramifications of a stalemate.

Local villages and agencies are bracing for cuts to a system ran on state funding affecting everything from daycare to funds for the disabled.

“We have already been notified that some grants we were expecting are being frozen,” said Bolingbrook Village Attorney Jim Boan, who did not have further details.

Meanwhile Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and the Democratic-led legislature are showing no signs of progress as of press time.

In response to the state government shutdown, state Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, said she supported legislation that appropriates funds to keep government services operating for another 30 days.

“After the governor vetoed a budget that protected middleclass families and funded essential services, we found a way to make sure that these programs could be sustained,” she said in a release. “Even though this bill was limited, it still provided support for some key services for our seniors, veterans, and disabled.

House Bill 4190 was voted on last week in response to the veto of the state budget. It would provide $2 billion in the next month to crucial programs, such as the Community Care Program, GPS monitoring for sexual predators, addiction treatment, rehabilitation services for the disabled, and services at the state’s veterans’ homes. The temporary budget failed on a vote of 67-1-32.

“It is extremely disappointing that so many of my colleagues allowed politics to cloud their judgment and avoided the opportunity to show bipartisan support for these crucial services that, in many cases, keep people alive.”

To stand in solidarity with state employees who may not be receiving their paychecks, and also with those whose access to state services are in jeopardy due to the government shutdown, Manley and some of her colleagues in the House vowed not to cash their legislative paychecks until a state budget has been adopted.

“Illinois government has come to this shameful point because of a governor who is supremely dedicated to shafting the middleclass and our state’s most vulnerable citizens,” said Manley.

Prior to the July 1 budget deadline, Will County voters were looking for answers during a legislative town hall meeting held on June 29.

Manley, along with state sens. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, D-Plainfield, and Pat McGuire,

D-Joliet, and Rep. Emily McAsey, D-Romeoville, hosted the meeting at the Bolingbrook-Fountaindale Library. The format was meant to be an informal opportunity for community members to ask legislators questions about government at the state level.

Parents offered child protection kits during free event last month

State Rep. Emily McAsey recently partnered with the Illinois Masonic Fraternity to host a free child identification program event for area residents.

During the event, parents received a child protection kit, which included a DNA sample, fingerprints of their children, and

a flash drive containing a color photo and recorded interview.

“The disappearance of a child is something no parent should have to endure, but it is important to be prepared,” McAsey said. “If a child is reported missing, having fingerprints, a DNA sample and a recent video will greatly assist law enforcement in the search.”

McAsey said the Illinois Masonic Fraternity did a great job providing this service to local families, and encouraged anyone unable to attend the program to contact her office at 815-3720085 for more information.

The officials spoke of a strained legislature that sorely needed to find a compromise, fielding questions from residents from Bolingbrook to Shorewood.

“The government has to work with a budget as does every other business or household,” area resident Cathy Weiss said. “We need checks and balances. There needs to be accountability for what money comes in and what money goes out.”

Weiss added that she thinks an independent audit agency receiving state money would help control the spending.

constituents and the legislators themselves. Governor Bruce Rauner received criticism for vetoing the budget.

Others at the meeting voiced their support for term limits in order to end what many in the crowded room considered the current “failed” way of doing business.

As the outcome of the state’s stalemate continues to play out, representatives from area social service agencies were on hand to express their concerns.

Patricia Bolden of the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, representing one of the largest homeless shelters in the area, questioned how the agency can continue with potential drastic cuts to their funding.

Manley told Bolden that

the legislators at the town hall meeting are fighting for her and individuals who do not have a voice in the community.

“This is where we have to come together and look at spending and make cuts in the right places,” Manley said. “The government is not a business. We are a service provider, and it is the right of citizens to count on us to give the services they need.”

Just how that is done, is yet to be decided.

“Everyone in the Senate is fighting for their community,” Bertino-Tarrant said. “We have a very diverse district, with one end wanting one thing and the other end another. But I don’t speak to the audience, I speak to the truth.”

Prodehl asked the panel of lawmakers if they are in favor of budget cuts and where they would like to see those cuts made.

“Are you in favor of raising taxes, because that’s what we’re going to have to do,” he stated.

On government spending, Manley said state revenues have been stable for too long, as costs continue to rise.

“They’ve used pensions like credit cards, and now we have a big problem,” she said.

Though definitive answers weren’t given, the officials pointed out that they were holding these town halls to hear residents input and made a commitment to bring their concerns to the forefront.

“We continue to make spending cuts and who we are as legislators are the people who have come

to serve you—our community,” McAsey said.

Though McGuire likened the legislature to drunks careening from problem to problem, he still is trying to remain optimistic for the future.

“Though the obvious problem, it is important to note that work still is getting done,” he said.

He knows that people want predictability and stability.

“The retiree wants to know if he or she can buy a car,” McGuire said. “The university president wants to know if they can build a building. The CEO wants to know if they can invest.”

Bertino-Tarrant agreed.

“We are all trying to do the right thing,” she said. “You have to understand that it is a hard process.”

Begin by gathering all the mail in one place, such as your kitchen table, and sort it by category. The categories might include: junk mail to recycle; junk and other mail to shred (anything you’d be concerned about if it flew off the garbage truck and landed in someone’s yard); magazines and newspapers; bills; and things to follow up on.

Sort the pile of things to follow up on according to the next action you need to take. These categories include: phone calls, things to review (quote from insurance company, medical bills to match to insurance company’s explanation of benefits, etc.), adf things to discuss with others.

Put each categorized pile into a file folder labeled with an appropriate verb (Call, Review, Discuss), and put them where you’ll attend to them, such as a desk or corner of the kitchen counter.

Nest, make time to process each folder by creating an appointment on your calendar. Block out a half hour or an hour to focus on one folder at a time, since it’s most efficient to do similar

Three time Charlie Westmont’s Donovan is baseball POY for 3rd straight season

The accolades keep coming for Westmont standout senior shortstop Charlie Donovan.

Before the end of the season, Donovan got word that he had been selected as Gatorade Player of the Year in Illinois for baseball.

“I got an email letting me know that he had gotten the Gatorade award as the best player in the state of Illinois and that’s just a great honor,” said Westmont coach D.J. Cocks. “The top player in the state no matter what class. It’s just an honor for him as a player and for us as a program to have that kind of recognition. It’s just amazing. I’m really proud of the way he is as player and as a person; he totally deserves it, but what an

honor, no doubt.”

Donovan, who has been tabbed the Voyager Media Player of the Year for the third straight year, hit .484 with seven homers and 33 RB, 64 runs scored and 42 stolen bases.

“I didn’t really expect it, but it was a very humbling thing,” Donovan said of the Gatorade award. “I think it’s just kind of a result of all the hard work I put in and the dedication I put in towards the game. There’s a bunch of other kids that could have got that award and they were deserving, but I guess all I could do at the end of the day is go out and have fun playing the game that I love.”

He was drafted in the 30th round by the Milwaukee Brewers last month, but that selection likely reflected the fact that he stated prior

A starter at shortstop at Downers South since late in his sophomore season, the senior batted .395 this spring.

The Benet senior lefty went 6-2 on the mound this season. He hit .322 for the Redwings.

A senior shortstop, two-year starter and All-West Suburban Silver player for Downers North. Farley hit .336 with 26 RBI and 30 runs scored.

The senior center fielder and twotime all-ESCC selection led Benet in hitting each of his three varsity seasons, including a .385 average in 2015. He’ll be attending the University of Illinois-Chicago and playing baseball there.

Drake Fellows The JCA junior lost only one game all season, a nine-inning loss to Lemont in the playoffs, to nine wins.

He posted one save on the season, while having a .575 ERA, a .753 WHIP, 98 strikeouts and only 11 walks.

Callender, a sophomore pitcher from Plainfield Central, was 5-2 with a 2.21 ERA. He also hit .329 at the plate.

Ferri, a junior, has verbally committed to Arizona State, one of the most highly acclaimed baseball programs in the country. The threeyear starter was Notre Dame’s top hitter with a .379 average.

Plainfield North junior came up with big hits throughout the season, including the playoffs. He batted .419 with a .489 OBP, drove home 34 runs and had 14 doubles.

Plainfield East junior hit .438 with nine doubles, four homers and 32 RBI. Also went 5-3 on the mound with 45 strikeouts.

Matt Jaskowiak Bolingbrook pitcher and third baseman batted .467 with a home run and five doubles on the year. On the mound he was 2-2, with a pair of complete games and a shutout. In 38 2/3 innings, he had an ERA of 3.52 and tallied 40 strikeouts.

He led the Raiders in batting average, complete games, shutouts and ERA and was second on the team in innings pitched and strikeouts.

Josh Krueger Romeoville senior posted 40 hits on the season including 10 doubles, for a .402 average. He stole 20 bases.

Christmas in July supports local nonprofit Heart Haven OutReach is preparing to host its primary fundraiser

Known for its work in mentoring teens in the community, Heart Haven OutReach is preparing to host its primary fundraiser, the 12th annual Christmas in July.

The event will be held July 15 at the Bolingbrook Golf Club, 2001 Rodeo Drive, Bolingbrook.

The organization was originally founded by community leaders to curb suspensions and expulsions in the high schools through support groups, one-on-one mentoring, character education programs, and healthy recreational activities.

According to staff, the organization has reached out and transformed the lives of almost 2,000 teens since opening its doors.

Through the generosity of WeatherTech, its presenting

sponsor, and other businesses in the area, the organization is able to offer a Christmas in July event complete with decorated Christmas trees, a Santa House, and a Candy Land. The event is meant to provide fun and entertainment throughout the day and into the evening.

Golf registration will begin at 11 a.m. with a cook-out lunch served under the tent. A “Best Ball” golf Tournament will take place on the state of the art, 18-hole Arthur Hill designed Bolingbrook Golf Course with a 12:30 p.m. shot-gun start. The first-place foursome will go home with an elegant “crystal” traveling trophy. Besides golf, there will be

plenty of contests, prizes, and fun on many of the holes during the day.

Individuals not inclined to golfing can still support H20 by attending the social hour and dinner event following the golf tournament.

For $50 before the event or $65 at the door, tickets are available for a night of socializing, eating and networking.

Tickets to the dinner event are included in the golf registration, which is $150 per person.

“It is important to note that we are not borrowing any money for this project,” said Noak. “We are constructing with money we have; so there is no issue there. It is not often you get to hear such a capital project get done with cash on hand but this is one of them.”

The village has hired Dewberry Architects, the same that worked

on the village hall complex, to design six different options. Various versions will allow for a building with or without a basement and/or administrative space; brick versus siding and alternate design factors.

The station will have minimized parking, however, a parking lot is available directly across the street.

Once bids for the project come

in, the village board will choose the best option.

In the interest of time, the relocation of the fire station and demolition will be done quickly.

According to Fire Chief Kent Adams, the fire station will be moved to an industrial space nearby and will not affect dispatch or the way the station currently operates.

That leads to a downhill approach shot at the par-4 12th that has water on the front right of the green. More water comes into play at the par-3 13th as it covers the right and front portions of the green.

The 14th is a tricky par-5 as shots right can end up in the trees, while shots left can lead to block approach shots. The 15th is a dogleg right that has plenty of room to bail out to the left, making it a longer hole, or you can play close to the water on the right and have a much shorter approach.

That sets up a spectacular couple of holes. The 16th is a par-3 that has the lake in the background but doesn’t really come into play. The bunkers in front of both sides of the green do come into play though.

Then comes the 17th hole, which is a dogleg left par-5 that runs along the lake. The green is surprisingly right along the lake and any shot that goes long, or even is coming into the green fast, could go into the water. It is great to take a moment on the hole and enjoy the scenery on the hole.

The 18th hole goes back to the

clubhouse and is a difficult hole with bunkers all around the fairway and green. A good drive can easily end up in a fairway bunker.

Overall, the course is a joy to play.

It offers a challenge as even from the white tees it has a 128 slope.

The course plays fair tee to green, but the greens can be challenging with the slopes and speed. They do you no favors with some of the pin placements, either, as I saw many good puts run 5-10 feet by the hole, which can become frustrating.

In April you can play the course for $49 during the week and $59 on the weekend. It goes up to $69-89 in the spring season and $75-109 in the summer, which goes from June 5-Sept. 27.

With the difficult greens and a lot of guests playing the course, it can take some time to play. Our round took five hours. The best bet would be to stay the night there and get an early bird tee time and save some money, as it is pricey in peak times.

If you are able to go in the spring or fall, it offers a great deal if the weather cooperates.

If you are a golfer who likes great views and/or challenging greens, this is your course. I would recommend this course as a mustplay for many golfers, but for those who struggle on the greens, I would recommend improving first to get a full enjoyment out of the round.
