The familiar site of McDonalds’ golden arches is coming to fruition, as construction crews broke ground on a new restaurant along Route 53 and Greenwood Avenue.

Formerly the site of a Bell Fuels gas station, the 1.23-acre property is currently vacant and will have

to undergo a clean-up phase after housing gasoline tanks.

Ornamental parking lot lighting, enhanced landscaping, upgraded building architecture and attractive signage have been proposed to meet the village’s design requirements for this site.

Area legislators schedule town hall State sens. Jennifer BertinoTarrant, D-Shorewood, and Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, and reps.

Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, and Emily McAsey, D-Romeoville, will hold a town hall meeting to discuss legislative issues from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 29, at the Fountaindale Public Library, 300 W. Briarcliff Road, Bolingbrook.

“I appreciate the open discussions with community members about topics that are important to them,” BertinoTarrant said in a release.

With the regular legislative session over, the town hall will give legislators an opportunity to answer questions from community

members on legislation, the budget and any other concerns they may have.

“Communication between voters and officeholders is essential. I look forward to this exchange of news, views and ideas,” McGuire said.

The town hall meeting is open to the public. Anyone with questions or concerns can join the legislators for a candid conversation about state and local government issues.

“The best ideas for reforming Springfield come from the common sense wisdom of Illinois taxpayers,” McAsey said. “As our state grapples with a severe fiscal

crisis, it is especially important that lawmakers listen to the ideas of residents so that we accurately represent their beliefs and help Illinois move forward.”

Magid, a manufacturer and supplier of safety solutions and personal protective equipment, has moved its facilities to Romeoville taking up residence in its new 700-square-foot global headquarters at 1300 Naperville Drive.

Magid CEO Greg Cohen said he was excited about the move, and thinks it will enable the company to further expand on ways to help customers.

The family owned business moved to Romeoville after almost 70 years of business in Chicago. Magid’s new world headquarters provides room for expansion and increases the company’s efficiencies by consolidating corporate offices, manufacturing and distribution

operations under one roof.

“We are truly grateful that Magid has chosen Romeoville for its world headquarters,” said Mayor John Noak. “It is my pleasure to officially welcome the company to our business community, bringing around 500 employees covering such diverse positions as manufacturing, distribution, business operations and global sourcing.”

Magid is capitalizing on the expanded space and the centralization of functions under one roof. In addition to added efficiencies in supporting its nationwide sales and service functions, the move enables the company to further strengthen its offering of custom manufactured solutions for customers’ hard-to-solve safety challenges.

As part of the move, Magid installed an automated warehouse and distribution system designed to grow with Magid while still ensuring speed and accuracy for customers.

The final component of one of the largest projects in Romeoville’s industrial park is finished with the completion of Ashley Furniture’s retail outlet center.

Commuters driving along Interstate 55 can’t miss the facility, a 454,525-square-foot building purchased by Ashley Furniture HomeStore to house its warehouse distribution center, offices and retail center. The center is located in Romeoville’s Boldt Business Park, 1045 Crossroads Parkway.

The site offers an all-in-one shopping experience, providing delivery services, customer pickup, offices and a retail outlet component, which brought in 120 jobs.

The company said the facility was built in response to high customer demand attributed

in part to Ashley’s trend-right design and other merchandising concepts. The project – one of the Chicago area’s largest buildto-suit projects in 2014 - was nominated for the Chicago Industrial Project of the Year by the National Association of Office and Industrial Properties.

“This is the first full-line furniture store we’ve ever had in the community,” Romeoville Mayor John Noak said. “This concept is unique even in the industry to have such a combination of showroom, distribution and office. The interstate gives them great visibility and we are excited about this as really a regional destination. Customers will know they have everything right here.”

Chosen in part for its location, the facility could help Ashley Furniture’s marketing efforts, with approximately 120,000 motorists passing the site every day. The retail side will also bring in additional sales tax dollars to the village.

While projections for how much will be raised are fairly modest at this point, Noak said it’s a huge benefit for the community.

“This is all new and any sales tax we receive is positive, and we will work to maximize that for the

community,” he said. “No one really knows what this will bring for sure, it’s the first of its type here and that is exciting in itself.”

In addition to sales tax, the village and other governmental entities such as schools and library districts will also benefit from property taxes generated by the new buildings.

“This all provides a net gain for the village,” Noak said. “They will be bringing consumers into the marketplace and business builds on business.”

The retail center, a 30,000-square-foot, two-story distribution showroom, is now open. All the regular furniture merchandise lines are on display, with a special section for outlet items. Ashley said it has planned a grand opening celebration for a later date.

“The new Ashley Furniture HomeStore distribution center and retail store in Romeoville provides a world class shopping environment and a whole new level of service for our customers,” Kurt Haines, senior vice president of Ashley Furniture HomeStore, said at the onset of the project.

The facility is owned and operated by Rockledge Furniture LLC.

Assistant principal assumes principal duties at Hermansen Assistant Principal Kristina Williams will become the new Principal at Hermansen Elementary School in Romeoville July 1.

She succeeds Jackie Mitchem who is moving to Independence Elementary School in Bolingbrook to be co-principal. Williams is a veteran administrator, having served for the past five years as assistant principal at Hermansen and five additional years as assistant principal at Lexington School in Maywood, Melrose Park and Broadview District 89.

Prior to that, she taught fourth grade at Irving Elementary School

in Maywood, third and fourth grade at Metcalfe Community Academy in the Chicago Public Schools system, and fourth grade at Oak Ridge R-6 Public School District.

A graduate of Southeast Missouri State, Williams holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s in school administration and instructional leadership. Williams has also studied in several countries including Canada and France. She resides in Bolingbrook with her two children.

22 VVSD grads earn bi-literacy commendations The Valley View School District 365U Board of Education honored 22 members of the class of 2015 who received Seal of Bi-literacy commendations from the state of Illinois for their proficiency in multiple languages.

Those recognized for their English and Spanish proficiency from Bolingbrook High School included Kelsey Wahlgren, Cynthia Silva, Lissette Puente, Selena Nambo, Banelly Mora Perez, Daniela Jimenez and Jovani Enriquez. Esmeralda Barajas

was recognized for English, Spanish and French. Ian Asbury was recognized for English and French.

All of Romeoville High School’s honorees involved English and Spanish proficiency. They were Ana Perez, Armando Cortez, Melisa Alvarado, Dana Balcazar, Perla Gutierrez, Jose Barraza, Jacqueline Hernandez, James Zahorick, Maya Bautista, Mireya Casas, McDavis Ansere, Jose Vazquez and Ashley Comeau.

Recognizing that proficiency in multiple languages is critical in enabling Illinois to participate effectively in a global political, social and economic context, state officials created the Seal of Bi-literacy program to promote linguistic proficiency and cultural literacy among high school students.

VVSD grad named new Principal at Beverly Skoff Beverly Skoff Assistant Principal

Cheryl Lockard will become Principal of the Romeoville elementary school effective July 1.

She succeeds Laura Noon, who left the district for another position.

Lockard, a graduate of Valley View School District 365U, has been assistant principal since the start of the 2009-10 school year, has been with VVSD for 17 years, having taught fifth grade at Jonas Salk Elementary School, kindergarten and first grade at Oak View Elementary School, and kindergarten, first and second grade at Independence Elementary School.

She was also a reading improvement aide at Tate Woods Elementary School in Lisle for four years.

Lockard holds a Bachelor of Arts in education from Illinois State University and a Master’s degree in teaching and leadership from Saint Xavier University, and is currently pursuing her doctorate in educational leadership at the University of St. Francis.

Superbowl champion and allpro tight end Rob Gronkowski spent the father’s day weekend at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet with his dad and four brothers.

The family flew into Illinois from five different “As a dad, its really special.” said Gordon Gronkowski. “We never get together that much. To have all five of them together is phenomenal for me.”

The family was scheduled to serve as grand marshals for the race and Rob had been tabbed to drive the pace car to kick off the Owens Corning AttiCat 300 Saturday night, but when the rain postponed the race until Sunday, the Gronkowski family were not able to stay around.

But just because they didn’t call for racers to start their engines or pace the field to the green flag, does not mean the energetic clan didn’t

entertain.

The brothers, especially youngest brother Glenn, an all-Big 12 fullback at Kansas State, had the media center in stitches during their press conference as well as having a blast with fans during a question and answer session in the Infield Fan Zone.

While there, Rob admitted when he practiced in the pace car earlier in the day, he may have gone over the pace speed, saying he had the pace car in excess of 100 miles per hour.

Even that lap, he said, made him appreciate NASCAR drivers.

“I wasn’t going 185 like them, but it is a challenge. It takes practice, hard work and dedication. They have to have mental toughness and they are up there with athletes in their competitiveness.”

The brothers answered every question from fans, sometimes with a PG-13 response, but the crowd loved the playful candor .

Benet’s Schuessler heads All-Area Volleyball team

Last year, Benet’s Mark Schuessler failed to make the ESCC AllConference squad as a junior.

That helped motivated him in the offseason to take things to the next level.

That, he did.

Schuessler, a 6-foot, 7-inch outside hitter for the Redwings, finished the season with 457 kills, 131 digs, 29 blocks and 43 aces.

He was also the ESCC Player of the Year and led the Redwings to a regional championship and nearly a sectional win, totaling nearly 60 kills in the two matches.

For his accomplishments, Schuessler is the Voyager Media Boys Volleyball Player of the Year.

“It was one of the best seasons I have ever had,” Schuessler said. “In club this year I had one of the best coaches I’ve ever had. I feel like I improved a lot from last year where I wasn’t even all-conference. I feel like

my confidence was never down.

I always played liked my next swing was for the game.”

“Mark is an outstanding allaround player who dominates from every position on the court,” said Benet coach Amy Van Eekeren. “His athleticism and versatility make him difficult to defend. His impressive kills from the both front and back row, combined with his killer jump serve, make him a force to be reckoned with.”

While Schuessler was strong throughout the year, it was his playoff run against some of the state’s top competition, which put him over the top.

He was the go-to hitter for Benet in a pair of three-set matches in the playoffs.

“Every time I see that we’re in a tight spot, I tell them to set me,” Schuessler said. “I know I am going to be able to pull it out.”

One of those fans, Katie Kessen, flew in from North Carolina just to see Rob. “I flew in last week to see Rob and I got to dance with him,” she said.

“I am a huge Patriots fan and I have family in Illinois and they always come to the race, so I figured I could kill two birds with one stone. I came and got an autograph. It made my whole day.”

The day was also a win-win for another Patriots fan.

“I am a NASCAR fan and I love the Patriots,” said Dane Libby from Oneida, Illinois “We have had season tickets for five years and it all just worked out.”

While the Gronkowski family is known for having a good time, their time in Chicagoland was not all fun and games.

The family also spread charity across Chicagoland with their charity , The Gronk Nation Youth Foundation. The family met with several families from the Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation.

The Gronk Nation Youth Foundation is an organization dedicated to inspiring and supporting our youth to reach their maximum potential by empowering them to be positively involved in sports, community activities, education, and fitness.

Its mission is to help youth stay actively involved in school and sports and provide them with the tools needed to help them follow their dreams and live a happy and more successful life.

“I was fortunate growing up. I had

my brothers around, my friends, my dad. I had access to everything I needed to be successful, Rob said.

“I had equipment, fields, whatever it was. We decided to start a charity to give back to kids that aren’t in the position that my brothers and I were in as we were growing up.

“The Gronk Nation inspires kids to get out on the playgrounds and football fields. We donate equipment to youth football so that kids can get out there and be active.”

XFINITY RACE Rains came in full Saturday night, washing out the Saturday night’s Owens Corning AttiCat 300 race at Chicagoland Speedway.

The move to Sunday may have hindered some, but it played to the favor of two drivers, as well as the fans that came back to watch.

Erik Jones and Ryan Blaney battled the final dozen laps, with Jones taking the checkered flag, finishing a weekend sweep, as he won the NASCAR Camping World Trucks Series American Ethanol 200 at Iowa Speedway Friday.

Jones, the youngest NASCAR driver to win two races in the same weekend, has run in all three series this season.

The win was his second NASCAR XFINITY Series race of the season, and eighth top 10 series finish.

“I got the inside of (Blaney) and just barreled into (turn) three as hard as I could to clear and slid in front,” said Jones. “Fortunately it worked and he didn’t try to cross us over or anything else.”

Jones started 11th in his No. 54 Monster Energy Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing.

“It seemed like last year I’d be into these situations and be so nervous,”

the 19-year-old said. “This time its like ‘I’ve got this.’ I felt like I’ve done it so many times throughout the year and throughout the day that it felt more natural. That’s definitely a product of seat time and being in the car every week or the truck every week. It’s been a huge, huge help.”

Jones led 94 of the race’s 200 laps while Blaney topped the field for 43 laps.

Blaney wrecked his No. 22 Hertz Ford Saturday in qualifying and was in a backup car Sunday, starting in the back row.

“I thought it was a good day for us, a decent day,” Blaney said. “I felt like I threw it away yesterday wrecking our primary. For our team to get a backup car out and work as hard as they did and have a car contending for the win and to be leading in the last little bit and then just not pull it off, that really speaks volumes to them about how well they prepared.”

The race featured a track record 23 lead changes, plus seven cautions for 39 laps.

Series points leader Chris Buescher finished fifth and maintained his series lead with 528 points, 29 points ahead of second place Ty Dillon.

“It’s a good points day, that’s how it ended up,” Buescher said. “The pit road speeding penalty is on me. ... I got us a little bit behind there and put us in a bad spot but the guys did a good job coming back.”

Chase Elliott, who won last summer’s XFINITY Chicagoland race spun out with 23 laps to go and finished 14th.

Ross Kenseth, driving the No. 20 Dollar General Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing, was sixth in his XFINITY Series debut.

Area Scout honored for saving drowning victim A Bolingbrook High School freshman was honored by the Rainbow Council of the Boy Scouts of America for his heroic effort to save a drowning victim in a hotel pool in June 2014.

First Class Scout Caleb Erickson received the Scouting Medal of Merit at the council’s annual Distinguished Citizen Award dinner at Lewis University.

The Merit Medal honors scouts who have performed an act of meritorious service above and beyond what is normally expected of a youth or adult member of the Boy Scouts of America.

The act should demonstrate exceptional character that reflects an uncommon degree of concern for the well-being of others,” Rainbow Council District Executive Daniel Stromberg said.

“The action does not necessarily need to involve rescue or saving life, but must demonstrate some aspect of scouting ideals or skills.”

Caleb was on a family vacation and was in the shallow end of a hotel pool when his grandmother noticed a boy struggling in the deep end. Caleb sprang into

Once out of the pool, the former Humphrey Middle School honor student and band member calmed the victim, encouraging him to keep coughing to clear water from his airway.

Fortunately, after a few minutes the boy recovered.

“Scouting isn’t just badges and camping,” award presenter Ilish Radulovic said. “It is so much more.”

Moving girls to lead Rebecca’s House Foundation strengthens young people By laura katauskas staff reporter

Image is key and believing in oneself is easier said than done.

It is not easy for girls coming of age in today’s media-saturated world, according to Rebecca’s House Foundation leader Cheryl Jordan, who is out to change that one step at a time.

After working with area youth service organizations for years, Jordan was moved to build her own program to help serve the community. She formed the volunteer-run, nonprofit organization in 2007 as a way to mentoring youth.

“I was working in the community [and] was a substitute teacher and a parent myself, and felt that void,”

The mission of Rebecca’s House is to strengthen the character and foundation of young people through education and social

Over the years, the group has seen hundreds of children participate in its programs, which first began with characterbuilding programs centered on children’s social abilities, kindness

and outreach that would also complement their academic life.

Jordan is now adding a new program. The Image Summer Leadership Academy takes place from June 24 to July 2 and is open to all girls. Most participants tend to be of middle and high school age, a time when most girls are going through a transition period, according to Jordan.

“It’s hard navigating through this time when so many things are changing, we try to teach them how to do so with a sense of selfconfidence,” Jordan said.

The cost is $135 per girl, and that includes materials and two field

trips to Chicago. Girls interested in joining the program can do so at any time.

Jordan explained that the program would not work without all of its volunteers, who work together to support the social and emotional health of girls through service, mentoring and building effective networks.

“This is more than just a girl’s club,” Jordan said. “It’s a girl movement.”
