COMMUNITY HARVEST RUN CELEBRATES 20 YEARS

n the last Sunday of September for the past 19 years, the Plainfield Harvest 5k Run/Walk & Kidz Miler has evolved from a small gathering of 250 runners and walkers at Village Green to an event that is averaging 1200 participants a year.

The Plainfield Harvest 5k Run/ Walk & Kidz Miler is “THE ORIGINAL PLAINFIELD 5K.” It is one of the largest raced, if not the largest, in Will County and has brought thousands of participants and spectators to Plainfield. Each year, the Plainfield Area Chamber of Commerce donates race proceeds to Plainfield are charities and community organizations and have done so since the inception of the race. Over the history of the race nearly $350,000.00 has been donated back into Plainfield. However, the event could not be a possibility without the dedication of the Plainfield Chamber of Commerce and the tireless efforts of the 5k committee. Race planning starts in March six months prior to the race and is dependent on over 100 volunteers helping throughout race week with bag stuffing, packet pick-upm and day of race. Volunteers are seen happily handing our water, cheering , and encouraging runners throughout

the day. The event ends in Village Green with an award ceremony and celebrations of in-kin donations of food that includes, pizza, donuts, fruit water and much more. n 1990, in response to the devastating Plainfield tornado, a small pantry operated by St. Mary Immaculate Church was expanded to include a broader spectrum of the community, and the Plainfield Area Interfaith Food Pantry was established. For the 25 years it has been in existence, the Plainfield Area Interfaith Food Pantry has been run totally by volunteers and has relied solely on donations to help keep food and other necessities on the pantry shelves. Donations take many forms including food, paper products, personal products and money. And although the pantry’s affiliation with the Northern Illinois Food Bank in 2006, has greatly increased our purchasing power, we do continue to need to purchase many items locally. Large donations, like that from the Harvest 5K, are especially appreciated and have helped us be able to continue to provide “holiday boxes” for our ever-increasing number of clients. The pantry currently provides food and other products to 200225 families in the Plainfield School District geographic area. Nonperishable foods are distributed approximately once every 3 weeks while perishable foods are available to clients each Wednesday and each Saturday. PLAINFIELD FIRE DEPARTMENT “We used/use the donation to purchase two fully outfitted bicycles for medics. We utilized these bikes at all events in Plainfield and most of all the 5K runs. We also use the donation to purchase gear and equipment for the bike medics.”

PLAINFIELD EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY “Last year we purchased 50 new 36” traffic cones for PEMA, to replace those that have been destroyed or gone missing. We were able to get them stenciled with “PEMA” on them so we can tell ours from everyone else. Two years ago we purchased 5 AC Hot Stick Voltage detectors. These allow PEMA members to locate live electrical sources. We use these before cutting tree branches while clearing storm damage or when responding to downed wires to identify the live ones. Helps to keep our people safe from electrocution.” - COMMANDER KEN RUGGLES

PLAINFIELD, IL 60585 630-416-1109 GREENHARVEST.ORG “Green Harvest is very thankful for the support received each year through the Plainfield Chamber, from the Plainfield Harvest 5K Run and Walk. With the donation from last year we were able to buy 15 tons of food through our partnership with the Northern Illinois Food Bank. This provided more than 4 months of food on our shelves to help feed the approximately 125 families we serve each month here in Plainfield and the surrounding communities.”

PLAINFIELD HARVEST 5K RACE PATH MAP DISTANCE 5K (3.1 miles) Split times at 1, 2 and 3 miles. Water will be available at the start, finish, and on the course.

COURSE Flat course begins and ends at the Village Green, located one block south of Lockport Street, between Des Plaines Street and Fox River Street.

PARKING Parking will be available at Plainfield High School - Central Campus located on Fort Beggs Drive.

From that time through race day, the 5k registration will be $40 and the Kidz Race will be $18 . In Person registration is only available at advance packet pickup or on the race day.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 28 5K early packet pick-up is available on Friday, September 28th from 2pm to 7pm at the Edward Plainfield Campus located at 24600 W 127th Street in Plainfield.

PRIZES Prizes will be provided by the Plainfield Area Chamber of Commerce after the race at the postrace party. Overall winners of both men & women will receive $100.00 for first place, $50 for second place, and $25 for third place. Winners in each age category will receive 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place medals.

Early packet pick up is also available Saturday, September 29th from 10am to 2pm at the Edward Plainfield Campus located at 24600 W 127th Street in Plainfield.
