City Council approves liquor license for Pickwick’s successor BY IGOR STUDENKOV he Pick, a potential replacement for the wellknown Pickwick restaurant, came one step closer to opening last week, after the Park ridge City Council voted unanimously to grant the restaurant a liquor license. located inside the Pickwick Theater building, the Pickwick restaurant was an uptown staple for more than 50 years before closing in december 2014. In the run-up to the closing, Park ridge resident Tim griffin began publicly discussing plans to open his own restaurant in the historic space. On dec. 7, he launched a Twitter account for the Pickwick’s successor, which he named “The Pick.” griffin subsequently announced plans to restore the space’s historic front door and windows, while modernizing the interior. As of July 20, the first four letters of the Pickwick

restaurant’s historic sign atop the entrance were gone, leaving only “WICk.” A rendering on the restaurant’s Facebook page shows the sign replaced with “The Pick” sign that used similar letters. While the paper sign at the entrance says the Pick will open in August, it looks as though much work would still have to be done. A temporary wooden door is in the entrance, and the interior is still under construction. City Manager Shawn Hamilton said griffin would need to get a go-ahead from the department of Community Preservation and development, as well as the building department. “I think [the owner] is hoping he can open in August,” Hamilton said, referencing the sign on the entrance to the building. Hamilton added that he didn’t want to guess when the restaurant might open.
