Village board approves new tagline, logo

“It’s possible here” is now the official tagline for the village of Niles, after trustees approved the slogan and a new logo at the May 26 village board meeting.

Ross Klicker, economic development and marketing coordinator for the village, said the process of developing the tagline and logo involved on-the-street interviews with residents, as well as soliciting feedback from village staff and local businesses.

“All three legs of the stool said the same thing,” Klicker said.

Mayor Andrew Przybylo said it was important for the new slogan to create desirability for people to want to live and work in Niles.

Police from Niles and Park Ridge were among hundreds of officers from around the state who ascended Dunkin’ Donuts rooftops Friday for Special Olympics Illinois.

Illinois law enforcement covered more than 190 Dunkin’ Donuts rooftops during the 13th annual Cop on Top fundraiser to raise awareness and accept donations for the Law Enforcement Torch Run, which benefits Special Olympics Illinois.

Officers from the Park Ridge Police Department were at several Dunkin’ Donuts locations in the city, including 1129 W. Touhy Ave., 2606 W. Dempster St. and 742 W. Higgins Road. Niles police officers conducted “rooftop stakeouts” at three Dunkin’ Donuts locations

Village moves on $7.3-million stormwater project Some residents not convinced upgrades will prevent flooding

Niles Board of Trustees awarded a multimillion dollar contract for the Cleveland Corridor Sewer Improvement Project to DiMeo Brothers Inc. at the May 26 village board meeting.

The project is one of the top priority projects recommended in the village’s stormwater master plan, which was put together by the engineering firm Hey and Associates.

The village received a $2 million grant from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District to complete

the project, which has a total price tag of $7.3 million. The sewer improvements are expected to take place over two fiscal years, according to the village.

Mary Anderson, director of public works for the village of Niles, said the Cleveland Corridor project will directly help 140 homes, which is the largest number of homes affected by any project in the stormwater master plan.

In total, about 700 to 800 homes were identified in the village’s stormwater management plan, according to Anderson. She said the Cleveland Corridor project spans from Oketo Avenue to Caldwell Avenue and includes the installation of a 72-inch relief storm sewer pipe.

Steven Yasell, a resident who lives on Odell Avenue, wrote a letter about flooding issues in the area.

“Two years of construction is not going to help the surrounding streets when we get another week’s worth of severe storms,” Yasell said

in his letter, which he wrote to other residents.

Many of those residents attended last week’s meeting and expressed their concerns.

“If something doesn’t get done quickly, I will move out of Niles,” said Jerry Barone, a Oconto Avenue resident who attended the meeting.

Donna Ellwanger, who also lives on Oconto, said homeowners in the area have had to use sandbags to prevent water coming into their homes.

“Each year, we keep getting more and more promises and nothing gets done,” she said.

Mayor Andrew Przybylo said the village has spent more than $1.5 million for a cost sharing program to help residents with flooding issues.

“We’re trying to help as many residents as we can,” he said.

Jeff Wickenkamp of Hey and Associates said the Cleveland Corridor project doesn’t help everyone in Niles, but stressed that it is one of the top priority areas

identified in the stormwater plan. “[The project] is an opportunity for the village to build something with the [Metropolitan Water Reclamation] District’s assistance,” Wickenkamp said.

Wayne Kuehn, a long-time Niles resident, said his flooding problems started in 2001 and he is in favor of the Cleveland Corridor project.

Kuehn doesn’t know if the project will benefit his home specifically, but he said he is glad it will help some residents.

In addition to the grant from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District, Anderson said the village is also receiving an improved interest rate through the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency’s revolving loan fund program.

“It’s a project that helps a lot of people,” she added.

Jump Forest Moses places 7th in high jump

CHARLESTON - Before this season, Northridge Prep High School in Niles had never had a field event earn a medal at the state meet.

That all changed last weekend in O’Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University when senior Forest Moses became the first field event medalist in the 39year history of the school.

Moses cleared 6-feet, 6-inches in the high jump and placed seventh in the 1A state meet becoming only the second medalist in school lore and first since Jim Kestler placed ninth in the 3200-meter run in 2002.

“I am happy I placed,” Moses said. “I was a little off my PR, it is 6-8 and I did 6-6 today. My goal was just to place and it I am really happy I was here to come here and represent my school. There were some really good people here and it was good to come here and compete against them.”

Moses will continue his high jump career next season at Drake University.

Moses also competed in the 110 hurdles and ran a 16.84, but failed to advance to the finals.

Patrick Moore, a sophomore from Northridge Prep posted a 2:03.47 in the prelims of the 800 and did not advance to finals.

Maine East also had a state medalist, as junior Torrain Haughton finished fifth in 1:53.76.

“I am pretty proud,” said Haughton, who posted a personal best time. “I came out here and did my best and that was what I wanted

Maine South sent four athletes to the state meet, however none of them advanced to the finals.

Sophomore Reece Jordan was the lone RedHawk to compete on Saturday, as both flights of the 3200 meter run take place on the final day of the meet.

Jordan placed 18th out of 45 runners in class 3A with a time of 9:28.57.

“This is my first time doing long distance track and I am really happy,” Jordan said. “I will be back, that is the glory of being a sophomore. I know I can always improve my training so I can get deeper in the teens.”

Jordan placed second in the first heat of the race, using a big kick at the end to pass several runners.

“The last two laps are just all mental and you just have to have it in this kind of race,” he said.

Senior Alex Jasper jumped 2010.75 in the long jump to end his career at the state meet. It was the

first time he had competed at state as an individual, advancing in the 400 relay last season, and learned from the experience.

“It was a good experience that people are looking for,” he said. “I am going to UW-Whitewater for track and this is a great experience that will prepare me for college.”

Junior pole vaulter Matt Dilfer also learned from his first trip to state. Dilfer missed on all three jumps at the opening height of 13-0, but he has next season to improve on it.

“This was my first time here,”

Dilfer said. “It was a rough day and I am ready for next year.”

Sophomore Kevin Jarvis will also have another shot in the shot put, as he had a put of 41-08.50 on Friday. Senior Henry Mierzwa ran a 4:17.99 in the 1600 in his final race as a RedHawk.

Niles West had the foursome of Brandon Costantio, Mike Malina, Frankie Santa and Jackson Denley post a 3:31.60 in the 1600 relay, which did not qualify for finals.

Maine East senior Nick Pavlovic had a shot put of 50-02 in the prelims.

Maine East wins first volleyball regional title

Jon Kulesza has coached Maine East to six regional championship games in 14 years at the helm, and the Demons came up empty each time.

But the Demons got over the hump in this, Kulesza’s 15th season as coach. Maine East team members proudly hoisted the Niles West regional title trophy following its 25-17, 25-20 victory over Rolling Meadows on May 27.

“It’s lucky No.7,” said Kulesza, whose team never trailed in either game. “We made some history.”

The regional crown is the first for a boys volleyball team in school history. A few weeks ago, the Demons defeated Deerfield to capture the CSL North championship for the first time since 1991.

However, the Demons saw the program’s most successful season ever come to an end last Friday at the Glenbrook South sectional, dropping a two-game match to powerhouse New Trier, 25-16, 27-25. The No. 2-seeded Trevians faced top-seeded Loyola for the sectional crown on Tuesday.

“This is the greatest Maine East team we’ve had since the 1991 team (that won a CSL North

championship),” Kulesza said.

“I’m proud of these kids; they did everything we expected and more.

“To get to this stage and lose hurts, but I can tell you there’s some pride in them because they represented us well.”

REGIONAL TITLE GAME As the team led 23-18 in Game 2, it could feel itself inching closer toward the regional crown, but Kulesza kept everyone focused on the task at hand.

“I knew we were getting close because a.) we were playing pretty well and b.) you peek up at the score(board) once in a while,” he said. “I knew we were getting close and I just wanted to stay in the moment.”

But after all was said and done, it was time to celebrate.

“It’s indescribable,” said senior middle Joe Swoboda, a three-year varsity starter who contributed seven kills in the victory over 11th-seeded Rolling Meadows.

“There’s so much emotion. It’s the best team we’ve had in such a long time. It’s just great.”

Senior all-conference outside hitter Lerin Mathew—a native of India who’s only been playing organized volleyball since the eighth grade after he and his family moved to the U.S. in 2008—registered a team-high 12 kills. He also exhibited a wicked jump-serve that the back row of Rolling Meadows couldn’t handle.

“We’ve put a lot of work into this from freshman year,” said Mathew. “We’ve been getting ready for these days (referring to the playoffs and the team’s success this season).”

“He found his rhythm behind that line,” said Kulesza. “He’s not a high-percentage server; he’s about 79-80 percent. I don’t know if he even missed one (tonight). He was awesome and that puts pressure on a team.”

Meanwhile, 6-7 sophomore middle Michael Boduch had four blocks, senior setter Gian Bobila dished out 22 assists, and junior outside hitter Patrick Malkowski added six digs.

“We were in good control (of the match), I thought,” Kulesza said.

“We handled their jump servers ; they had some errors that hurt them and we started to get a few more blocks. That helped us.”

SECTIONAL SEMIFINALS The Trevians (36-2) were as good as advertised, marching to their 25-16 win in Game 1 and opening up a lead that grew to as many as 11 points (23-14) late in the game.

But the Demons, who ended the year 26-8, gave New Trier one of its toughest battles of the postseason in Game 2. Maine East held the lead on 13 separate occasions, with its final lead of the contest 23-22 on a kill from Mathew, who finished with seven.

“As far as the second game goes, that was more of what we expected,” Kulesza said. “I said to Joe (Swoboda) there at the end; he’s a three year varsity starter and all-conference player, ‘We’re going with the jump-serve. If we’re going down, we’re going down swinging.’

He’s been money for us all year.

“I’m proud of the effort, a little bummed out about the outcome but what an amazing season for these guys.”

The Hawks went into last week’s Evanston Class 3A sectional semifinal matchup versus No. 1-seeded New Trier with a plan in place to try and contain high-scoring junior forward Kelly Maday.

So they had their best defender, junior Taylor Barzowski, mark Maday, a University of Illinois recruit.

“Taylor is one of our fastest players and she’s tough as nails,” said Maine South coach J.J. Crawford. “We thought, ‘If Taylor could take her out …

I don’t believe she (Maday) scored, but they’re so good that other people did. So that was successful, but what wasn’t successful was shutting down the rest of them.”

Crawford succinctly summed up what happened to the Hawks in their 3-0 loss to the Trevians, which ended Maine South’s 2015 season. Maine South kept Maday off the score sheet, yet her teammates picked up the slack.

Celia Frei scored just three minutes into the game for New Trier, and that goal held up to give the Trevians a 1-0 first-half lead.

New Trier ended up winning the sectional championship with its 2-0 triumph over Loyola last Friday.

“They’ve a very talented team,” Barzowski said. “We thought if we could hold them defensively and not have them score, we could do a quick counter on them and see how we can compete with them then.

And if not, hold them off until PKs eventually.”

The Hawks (16-6-3) had a scoring chance late in the first half that would have tied it, but couldn’t capitalize.

“They scored in the first five (minutes of the game) and the first five (minutes) of the second half and that hurt.” Crawford said. “We came out in the second half actually thinking, ‘We didn’t have them where we want, but we felt we were in it and we could get a quick counter.’ It just didn’t work out.”

“We adjusted (during the game),” Crawford said. “We went from a 4-4-2 to a 4-5-1; we tried to have a target and use our outside halves to get that counter and unfortunately we couldn’t connect with it. They’re (New Trier) partly to blame for that; they took us out of it.”

The Hawks are losing, among

others, leading goal-scorer Gabby Pinto (10 goals), Jackie Viola (eight) and goalkeeper Claire Vinopal (eight shutouts) to graduation. They were an integral part of a Maine South squad that improved its win total by five games over last season and won a regional crown, defeating Lane 1-0 last Friday on penalty kicks. The Hawks saw a string of 12 consecutive regional championships snapped last year.

“We had two D-I players last year (all-state goalkeeper Emily O’Grady and Jessie Schmidt) and everybody thought we’d

do nothing this year and we actually did better on every aspect,” Crawford said.

The fifth-seeded Hawks started the season with an eight-game unbeaten streak, then went 0-4-1 in its next five games, and finished up the year 8-2-2, including a nine-game unbeaten streak.

Barzowski, sophomore midfielder Sara Ignoffo, junior forward Claudia Wine (both girls had nine goals this season) and junior goalkeeper Erin Henley gives the Hawks a nice nucleus for the 2016 season.

“I’m very happy with who’s

coming back next year,” Barzowski said. “We have a good solid team now and I’m ready to move forward next year. We have a good season ahead of us.”

The Hawks, however, will be without freshman Ally Kilburg and sophomore Emily Olson, each of whom will be playing club next spring.

“That was disappointing,” Crawford said, “but we wish them well. We’ve got some freshmen coming in who may actually make the jump (to varsity) and we’ve got a good JV squad that didn’t lose a game so I think our arrow is pointing up.”

Five local teams compete for regional championships FeaTurIng

Five area teams—two baseball and three softball—were vying for regional titles last Saturday, but Mother Nature had other ideas.

Saturday’s steady rains washed out all the matchup; thus, each of the teams faced off instead on Monday.

In baseball, No. 2-seeded Notre Dame was pitted against seventhseeded Loyola at the Loyola regional, while Maine South, hosting its own regional, resumed its game from last Saturday versus top-seeded Evanston. The Wildkits were leading 2-0 before the game was called.

Meanwhile, in softball, Maine South took on No. 4-seeded Trinity for the championship of its own regional, while ninth-seeded Niles West battled No. 1 seed York at the St. Ignatius regional. In Class 3A play, Resurrection competed for the Antioch regional title against the host school, which is seeded No. 2.

Swoboda provided the Demons with their largest lead of the game, 14-11, following two straight tips and a block.

“It’s a shame,” Kulesza said. “They (New Trier) made a run at a timely moment there and you give them credit. They’re a great team and they have not dropped a set in conference this year. That would have been the first time there, and what a great time for it in the sectional semi, but that’s a great team.”

Bobila had 13 assists and seven digs, Rushik Patel totaled seven digs, and Boduch added three kills and two blocks. Bobila, Andrew Fox (three kills), Swoboda, Patel and Mathew are among the seniors Maine East loses to graduation.

“I’m happy and sad at the same moment because we got this far, and I’m sad because we didn’t get to go to the sectional finals,” said Mathew, who said he may attend

two RBI, and Joe Rimac doubled while driving in two runs. Scott Kutschke was the winning pitcher, going the first two innings.

Dylan Kuffell’s triple was one of four Maine East hits. The Demons finished 2015 with an 8-22 mark.

Maine South, the No. 9 seed, blanked No. 8 seed Niles North, 3-0, behind a one-hitter from senior Hank Schau, who fanned four. Maine South tallied all the runs it needed in the sixth as Schau clubbed a two-run double while Jarrett Gustafson hit a runscoring single. Zach Parker also doubled.

SoFTBall Niles West advanced to the championship game a 6-3 win over the host school on May 27, striking for four runs in the top of the third.

Leading the offense was Gianna Mahoney, who went 4-for-4 with a double. Shannon McHugh also doubled and singled, and had two RBI. Atorena Michael hit a triple and Hope Cherian doubled.

Maya Caballero pitched a complete game, striking out five and allowing just one earned run.

Maine South scored a 7-2 victory over Lane in its regional opener on May 27. Nina Anderson went the distance, fanning five

“We did not play very well,” said Hawks coach Gary Granell.

Walsh and Declan Cannon piled up 14 and 10 kills, respectively, in the victory over Von Steuben, while Cannon also finished with 10 digs.

Doherty finished with five kills and 18 assists, and d’Ambrosio tallied 16 assists.

“We came out flat in Game 1

and not allowing a walk. Kerry Foley blasted a home run, and had an additional hit and three RBI. Courtney Richardson went 3-for-4 and Sabrina Argaez was 2-for-3.

Resurrection held a 3-2 lead over Johnsburg in its regional semifinal game May 28, but broke the game open in the top of the seventh, plating four runs and going on to win, 7-2.

Caitlin Flaherty and Madison Van Horne crushed home runs in the inning. Yenessa Meneses struck out 11 for theBandits, and Joanna Cirriacione had two hits.

STaTe TennIS Maine South freshman Danilo Kovacevic enjoyed an impressive debut at last weekend’s state tennis meet, winning four of the six matches in which he played.

Kovacevic defeated his first- and second-round foes 6-1, 6-3 and 6-2, 6-0, respectively, but fell 6-1, 6-2 in the third round, and went into the consolation round.

Kovacevic then won two more matches—6-2, 6-3 over Rohan Piska of Lincoln-Way East and 6-4, 6-4 over TyKrill of Wheaton Academy—and was eliminated by Tony Leto of Downers South in a long 1-6, 7-4 (4), (10-5) in a sixthround consolation match.

Josef Narcisa led the Wolves with seven kills and 17 assists, Caleb Olar had 16 digs, Bryan Duong and Denis Ovoshchnikov each notched six kills, and Michael Ibrahim had five.

For the Demons, Mathew chalked up 16 kills, Malkowski 12 and Swoboda nine, while Bobila accumulated 40 assists.

Another big problem is that it can follow you around when it comes to applications or when you apply for different types of licenses.

Many of these ask if you’ve ever filed bankruptcy. It doesn’t ask if it’s still on your credit report; it will ask if you’ve ever filed bankruptcy.

If you have, you’ll have instances for the rest of your life when you

have to admit it and explain it all over again. So, it’s an emotional scar that follows you around for a long, long time.

Too many bankruptcy filers never really recover from financial distress because they never learn new and better ways to manage their money. Response Programs Postal Carrier Watch The Department of Family and Senior Services partners with the Morton Grove Post Office to provide seniors a service called Postal Carrier Watch.

Emergency Response Systems An emergency response system is a communication device, which is linked with an emergency center staffed by trained professionals.

Caregiver Support Group Are you charged with caring for an older adult, spouse, or partner?

Join other caregivers to discuss your issues and concerns. The meetings center around caregivers and participants can openly discuss their own situations in a supportive, nonjudgmental atmosphere.

The Caregiver Support Group meets the fourth Wednesday of every month from 10-11:30 a.m. All family caregivers are welcome to attend. For more information call the Village Social Worker at 847-663-3072.

Senior Center Activities The village of Morton Grove provides an exciting variety of educational classes, activities and day-trips for older adults.

“People are happy here,” she said, adding that the design and color of the logo are meant to show that Niles is a friendly and approachable town.

Research found that residents consider the village safe, family-oriented and friendly, according to LS+Team. On the flip side, research on the new logo indicated that community members felt some village weaknesses include its lack of a “real” downtown, management of the village’s “growing pains” and areas that are not pedestrian friendly.

Hayley Garard, communications and multimedia coordinator for the village, said staff will continue meeting with LS+Team to further develop a marketing plan for the village.

“This will certainly not be something that happens overnight, but it will lay out a solid plan that we will follow over the next few years,” Garard said.

The plan will include possible changes to the village’s website, newsletter, TV channel, signage and different types of promotional materials.

“We are very, very excited to go out with a strong brand to attract new residents, new businesses and to give our current residents and businesses a strong sense of community pride,” Garard said.
