House Transportation Committee considers two Senate bills addressing noise issues BY CHRIS ZOIS | FOR THE BUGLE oise complaints about o’hare international airport reached record numbers in march, but legislation that recently passed the illinois Senate could quell some of the issues. noise from jets coming in and out of the airport is a given, but some community groups and residents say the problem has increased over the last couple years because of altering runway usage at o’hare. in march there were almost 353,000 noise complaints filed in the city of chicago, pushing the total number to more than 500,000 during the first quarter of 2015, according to a report presented
to the o’hare noise compatibility commission. to put that into perspective, there were 11,145 complaints in march 2014 and 268,211 total all of last year. park ridge city manager Shawn hamilton said the problems are not just affecting residents of chicago, but also those who are living in the northwest suburbs. “the impacts we are seeing from the airport have been dramatically underestimated,” hamilton said. “We are asking the Federal aviation administration to run a new impact report in order to see how the reconfiguration of the airport’s runways is creating an impact.”
