Community members united together last week to honor the life of Cardinal Francis George during a memorial mass at St. John Brebeuf Catholic Church in Niles.

Residents sang songs and prayed for the late Cardinal, who passed away Apr. 17 after a decade-long fight against cancer.

“He always strived to align himself with Christ,” SJB Father Michael Meany told a room full of mourners who attended the memorial Wednesday, April 22. “He was always about giving himself away to let others know the joy and peace of Christ.”

“He showed us how to live, and he showed us how to die,” said Conrad Sparkowski, a Niles resident who attended the special

George was born in Chicago on Jan. 16, 1937 and was ordained a priest in 1963. He earned graduate degrees in philosophy, theology and ecclesiology, and taught philosophy at the seminary and university levels. Pope John Paul

II appointed George the eighth archbishop of Chicago, following the death of Joseph Cardinal Bernardin in November 1996.

He was installed May 7, 1997 and became the first native Chicagoan to hold the position, and first cardinal archbishop to visit all 363 parishes in the Chicago

Archdiocese.

George also held significant positions in various Vatican congregations and the World Synod of Bishops. In 2006, George was diagnosed with bladder cancer. But despite his illness, Meany said the cardinal remained a good and courageous man. “He

put Christ before his own needs,” Meany said.

Meany noted that George had been very supportive of St. John Brebeuf Parish over the years. He championed a capital campaign that allowed the parish to replace a gym wall at St. John Brebeuf School and complete work on its roof.

Even when George was sick, Meany said he came to St. John Brebeuf to look at the roof.

The capital campaign backed by the cardinal contributed more than $360,000 for the gym wall replacement and roof repairs.

“He took an interest in this parish,” Meany remembered, adding that the cardinal showed the same caring attitude throughout the archdiocese.

Meany said George visited more than 350 parishes in Lake and Cook counties on a regular basis, and embraced various cultures and their differences.

No matter what size or type of congregation, George treated everyone with respect, he said.

“He treated everybody the same,” Meany said.

AnnaWlodkowski, of Des Plaines, attended last week’s memorial because she wanted to show her support for the beloved Cardinal George, she said.

“It was very thoughtful,” Wlodkowski said of the mass.

Cook County announces sweeping drug reforms Policy changes target minor drug possessions By bugle staff nweditor@buglenewspapers.com @NilesILNews

The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office announced last week it will no longer prosecute most misdemeanor cannabis possession cases and divert Class 4 felony drug offenders to alternative programs.

State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez said the “first-of-its-kind” drug policy is an effort to keep nonviolent, lowlevel drug offenders out of the criminal justice system and steer more individuals to treatment.

Additionally, the state’s attorney’s office said it will create a street-level diversion program to help steer low-level, juvenile drug offenders to community-based drug education and mentorship organizations.

“The methods in which we are handling low level drug cases here in Cook County are simply not working,” Alvarez said. “Under our current policies and practices, we continue to see the same individuals revolving in and out of our criminal justice system with no meaningful impact or outcome and at a significant cost to taxpayers.”

Changes to the county’s drug policy are the result of an analysis

of the screening and prosecution of drug cases over the past year, the state’s attorney’s office said.

The review also looked at cost effectiveness and system outcomes, and included an evaluation of the drug policies of other major U.S. cities.

Class 4 felony drug possession cases accounted for almost 25 percent of the nearly 40,000 felony cases handled by the state’s attorney’s office in 2014.

Additionally, the state’s attorney said there were more than 15,000 misdemeanor cannabis possession cases in that time.

“While our financial resources are shrinking in Cook County, violent crime is not,” Alvarez added.

“These policy changes will enable us to reallocate our resources away from offenders who are non-violent and have a drug addiction toward fighting violent crime such as drug trafficking, illegal guns and gangs.”

Under the first component of the new policy, prosecutors will no longer proceed with misdemeanor charges for possession of less than 30 grams of cannabis for individuals who have fewer than three arrests or municipal citations for similar charges. Individuals with three or more of these charges will be

referred to the existing drug school program.

Secondly, all offenders charged with a Class 4 felony for possession of a controlled substance or possession of cannabis will be routed to an alternative prosecution program, including the new Drug Deferred Prosecution Program.

Individuals with significant violence in their criminal backgrounds will not be eligible for program.

The state’s attorney’s office said the DDP Program is specifically designed to link low-level, repeat drug offenders with treatment and other social services.

“Ibelievethatthesepolicychanges will be crucial in addressing the drug epidemic here in Cook County as a public health issue by ensuring that low-level drug offenders will be kept out of the system and provided with linkage to necessary treatment and services,” Alvarez said.

Additionally, she said her office will no longer proceed with charges against juvenile offenders for the possession of under 30 grams of cannabis and those who have fewer than three arrests or police contacts for similar charges. Instead, the office will work with community organizations and the Chicago Police Department to create and implement a juvenile version of Seattle’s Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion program.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the Arbor Day Foundation have designated the village of Niles a 2014 Tree City. Village officials announced the designation during the Arbor Day Ceremony on Friday, April 24, and an award presentation was made during Tuesday’s Board of Trustees Meeting.

“I would like to recognize our Board and staff for the valuable

work they have put in for this designation, and I would hope that this title will allow us to continue in the direction of sustainable tree management,” Niles Mayor Andrew Przybylo said in a release.

The village said Tree City designation is given to municipalities nationwide that demonstrate a commitment to maintaining and planting trees, as well as advocating on behalf of trees.

Being named a Tree City was a goal of the village’s 2030

comprehensive plan, and will also allow the Niles to seek additional grants for funding of environmentally friendly projects.

Tree City USA is a national program that provides a framework for community forestry management in towns and cities, according to the Arbor Day Foundation. Communities achieve Tree City USA status by meeting four core standards of sound urban forestry management, including maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and celebrating Arbor Day. Washington students recognized for sustainable solutions Illinois EPA honors eight area students in 2015 Environmental Pathways contest By bugle staff nweditor@buglenewspapers.com @NilesILNews

A handful of Washington Elementary School sixth graders received top honors in the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency’s 2015 Environmental Pathways poster and poetry/ prose exhibit. Eight Washington students were recognized for their entries during a special ceremony in Springfield on April 18. Almost 200 fifth and sixth graders from across the state participated in this year’s contest, the theme of which was “Transportation and Air Pollution: What are the Green Solutions?”

“This is extremely exciting,” said Washington teacher Debbie Martin, who coordinated the project with teacher Rachel Angelos. “The students have worked so hard, and have been able to use their creativity to share important messages.”

Daniela Vertucio, who received an honorable mention for her entry, was just as excited as her teacher.

“I’ve always liked to draw, and

so I did a poster that illustrated some solutions to air pollution, like carpooling,” she said.

Washington students have participated in the contest for the past eight years.

This year, three Washington students ranked in the Top 12.

Alexandra Lapinski, Christopher Miller and Prapti Patel received top winner awards. Alisha Junaid, Mimi Kakares and Daniel Okafo earned special recognition awards, while Vertucio and Nicole Sobski received honorable mentions.

“I always look forward to submissions from Washington School,” said Kristi Morris, outreach and education coordinator for the IEPA. “The students consistently have outstanding entries and it’s noticeable how much work the school puts into educating students on the topics.”

The winning students’ work will be featured in an EPA calendar and on the agency’s website at www.epa.illinois.gov/ topics/education/contest. It will also remain on display at the Illinois EPA through May 18.

Police announce results of roadside checks The Niles Police Department conducted a roadside safety check on April 18 from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. at the intersection of Milwaukee and Touhy Avenue.

During that period, officers checked 139 vehicles. Two arrests were a direct result of the roadside safety check.

One person was arrested for driving under the influence and another for driving while license suspended.

In addition, three seatbelt

violation citations, two child seat violation citations and four other citations were issued in that period.

The Niles Police Department said it will continue to conduct roadside safety checks periodically throughout the year in its ongoing effort to reduce impaired and distracted driving within the village.

These checks are provided by an Illinois Department of Transportation Grant.

So, a teacher would get 75 percent of their salary at retirement until the end of their lives and some have a spousal benefits that continue past that point. This is a bad bargain entered into by elected officials who just cannot seem to spend public money like they spend their own money.

Why do our elected representatives – remember that they’re supposed to be representing us and not their own private interests – sign contracts they know are going to end in disaster?

So, what happens over time is that you end up paying for phantom workers who are actually retired and not working.

Think about a school that needs 100 teachers. Over time, those teachers eventually retire and you need to hire new teachers.

If a teacher starts at $42,000, roughly the average at Illinois’ 25 largest school districts, and gets just a 3-percent raise each year, they’ll end up making more than $100,000 by the time they retire 30 years later. So, you need 100 teachers and you’ve now got 100 teachers getting their retirement benefit. That means you’re paying for 175 teachers, but 75 of them aren’t teaching, they’re retired.

This is why school taxes and taxes in general are so ridiculously high. It’s why governments cannot balance their budgets. More than 70 percent of a government’s budget goes to employees, whether working or retired. This hurts young people the most and creates two classes of government workers.

Most government pension programs have tiers, one of which pays out in full and one which is encumbered by the first and thus can only pay a reduced pension amount. It hurts young people just starting out in life by forcing them to pay for older, wealthier people. It hurts

everybody who has to pay higher taxes for a bad system.

But, is there a solution? How about market-based innovations that are proven to work? If the government put in 7.5 percent of the employees annual salary with a one-to-one match at any amount above that up to 15 percent, that worker will have about $1 million upon retirement at the lower end and if they max out their matching amount nearly $2 million.

What’s best about this system is that it is a pay-as-you-go system. There is no unfunded pension debt. There isn’t a massive drain of resources or increase in taxes decades out. Workers own their retirement money and don’t have to worry about politicians clawing back their promises.

If pension shortfalls are not made up, then the money will simply be taken out of taxes, thereby lowering growth and the quality of life for people without these pensions.

No new pensions should be the motto, and a transition to innovative and market proven retirement policies should be instituted for every new hire at the very least. It doesn’t make sense to pay retirees six-figure salaries, while working families struggle to make ends meet. What can’t go on, won’t. Better to fix it now, than later.

Seven seasons of memorable and stellar play at Niles West High School and the University of Notre Dame—earning all-American honors at both levels—reached a crescendo for Jewell Loyd on April 16 when she became the No. 1 overall selection in the 2015 WNBA draft by the Seattle Storm.

“It was definitely an awesome experience to hear your name called and be with your family,” said Loyd recently from Seattle. “It was a great experience.”

The junior sensation decided to declare for the draft the day after Notre Dame lost to UConn in the NCAA championship for the second straight year, but her decision to forego her senior season with the Irish was based on wanting to achieve certain goals for herself, not on the outcome of the title game.

“I wrote down a list of what I wanted to do and accomplish,” she said, “and it was the right thing for me and my family.”

Loyd mentioned that she has been getting council from none other than NBA superstar Kobe Bryant on Twitter.

“He’s been a great mentor of mine,” she said. “He’s been willing to help me out so much, and communicating with a legend (has been helpful). We talk more about off-court stuff than on-court stuff.”

Setting, and achieving goals, is par for the course for Loyd. She

used to do the same thing during her four-year varsity career at Niles West, noted Wolves coach Tony Konsewicz.

“Jewell is a basketball kid,” Konsewicz said. “She eats it and breathes it. She knew she was going to play college basketball and pro someplace; that was her goal. I learned a long time ago never to doubt her when she says something about basketball.”

Konsewicz didn’t get the opportunity to watch Loyd take the podium after getting drafted No. 1 the night it occurred because he was coaching in his daughter Jackie’s softball league, but he watched it later.

“I had a great sense of pride and that I was able to coach her,” he said.

“I almost feel like a proud father. It’s really a special time.”

Konsewicz said he and Loyd keep in touch. He didn’t try to text her the night of the draft, instead waiting until the next morning.

“I figured she was bombarded (with text messages the night of the draft),” he said. “The next day I texted her and not more than five minutes (later) I received a text back from her.”

“I have a great relationship with Coach K and (Niles West assistant) Mike Parker,” Loyd said, “and I still keep in touch with (former teammate) Molly Kleppin.”

The Hawks got off to a somewhat slow start this spring, but there’s plenty of reason for optimism going forward.

Maine South has been a perennial 20-match or better winning club over the years under head coach Gary Granell, posting 26 victories during 2014. Granell has six key players back from that squad, including 6-foot-4 senior outside hitter Evan Walsh, and he believes once juniors James d’Ambrosio (setter) and Jacob Serrano (middle hitter) return to action, he can field a more regular lineup.

“We’ve had some starters who are out due to injuries (d’Ambrosio has a concussion) and other issues, so we really haven’t had one match that we’ve played with who we think is our starting lineup,” Granell said.

“Guys that have stepped up who are playing role positions have to get more consistent and we have to build our consistency as a team around who’s ever on the floor.

“So if I get those two guys back, and we can put some other guys back where they should be instead of playing out of position, I think we’re going to be a lot more consistent.”

Walsh, who recently verbally committed to Carthage College, exhibited just how dominant he can be last Friday, ringing up 20 kills to lift the Hawks past Marist 20-25, 25-20, 25-20, and put their overall record at 6-5 going into this week.

“We’ve been having a little bit of a hard time starting up. I don’t really know what it is,” said Walsh, an allCSL selection last year. “I think we are a little more of a momentum team. We like to get excited; we like it when someone gets a big kill

and capitalize on that for the next couple of points.

“I think we’ve come a long way as a team. We’re starting to get closer, we’re starting to get that bond together and I think moving forward we should continue to get better.”

Junior setter Patrick Doherty is one player who’s helped fill the void while d’Ambrosio is recovering from his concussion, which he suffered last week. He recorded 20 assists against Marist.

“I think we have a lot of potential,” Doherty said. “We’ve had some setbacks, so once we get everyone back and get some games in we’ll be a lot better. We’ve been moving guys around and we’re not where we’re supposed to be so I think that will be critical. By the end of the season we’ll be a lot better.”

Wolves, Hawks split CSL South contests By mike sandrolini sports reporter

Niles West baseball coach Garry Gustafson put it best when summing up two CSL South games versus Maine South last week: baseball is a funny game.

Visiting Maine South clubbed the Wolves, 14-9, on April 21, but Niles West turned the tables at Maine South April 23, winning 4-2.

Wolves senior Tyler Stegich had eight strikeouts and got the complete-game win. He also doubled and singled, and Blake Kons doubled, as well.

“You come out it’s a new day and a new pitcher,” Gustafson said. “It’s always a big win when you can beat a Maine South team. Tyler got ahead of hitters and he had command of his breaking ball. He threw with confidence and that was the difference. He challenged hitters and really put them in tough situations to hit.”

Stephen Sakowicz (two stolen bases) and Zach Parker each doubled, and Hank Schau had two RBI. Kyle Zajdel struck out five while going the distance for Maine South.

The Hawks banged out 17 hits in their 14-9 triumph. Matt Whitelaw went 4-for-4 and had two RBI, while Jake Scarpelli went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Sakowicz doubled, singled and had two RBI, and Jarrett Gustafson added two RBI. Michael Gunartt homered, singled and had two RBI for the Wolves.

However, Maine South coach Bill Milano said he would like his squad to be more consistent at the plate.

“The hitting is the thing that’s been missing,” he said. “The pitching is solid, the defense has been good and the base-running has been solid.

It’s been the inconsistency with basically hitting the ball hard and then bearing down with runners in scoring position and getting a clutch hit. We have to do a better job of that.”

Maine South was outhit by Deerfield 10-5 in a CSL crossover game April 23, and trailed 4-0 going into the bottom of the seventh, but plated five runs to win, 5-4.

Sakowicz delivered the gamewinning hit, a two-run single that scored Jimmy O’Brien and Scarpelli.

Scarpelli also drove in two runs during the inning with a hit, and Parker had the Hawks’ only extra base hit, a double. Brandon Ranieri was the winning pitcher.

•Notre Dame split an ESCC doubleheader with Joliet Catholic, losing the first game 8-2 but winning Game 2, 5-3. Tim Simon snapped a 3-3 tie in the second game with a two-out, two-run triple. Tommy Norton went 3-for-3 with a double, and Matt Segovia doubled twice. Joe Rimac picked up the victory as the Dons used seven pitchers.

Notre Dame blanked Hope Academy 10-0 on April 23 behind the combined effort of seven pitchers, including starter and winner Scott Kutschke. Sam Ferri and Simon each enjoy two RBI days, and Segovia collected two hits.

•Maine East held a 4-3 lead over visiting CSL North foe Niles North heading into the top of the seventh

inning on April 21, but the Demons couldn’t hold on as the Vikings scored three runs and ended up winning 6-4.

Dylan Kuffell (double) and Ryan Sands each went 3-for-3, Jake Devitt had two hits and two RBI, and Anthony Guzman doubled. Lukas Parker struck out 11.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL Maine East continued to roll last week, upping its overall record to 131, 4-0 in the CSL North with victories April 24 over Wheeling 25-9, 20-25, 25-14, Highland Park 25-22, 25-19, on April 23 and Glenbrook North 2527, 25-23, 25-20 April 20.

In the win over Glenbrook North, Lerin Mathew collected 11 kills,

Joe Swoboda had six kills and four blocks, and Gian Bobila notched 23 assists. Mathew and Michael Boduch were the Demons’ co-leaders in kills vs. Highland Park (eight), and Swoboda added three kills and three blocks. Boduch totaled 11 kills and three blocks against Wheeling.

•Maine South and Niles West faced off in a CSL South match April 23, and Evan Walsh recorded 11 kills to lead the Hawks (7-6, 1-3) past the Wolves 25-17, 24-26, 25-21, for their first league victory of the year. Declan Cannon chipped in with eight kills for the Hawks. Josef Narcisa was the Wolves’ leader in kills with 10.

•Notre Dame lost a pair of ESCC matches last week. On April 21, the Dons fell to Benet 25-11, 25-22, and

Carmel handed them a 25-21, 25-22 defeat on April 23.

Conor O’Neill had four kills and Daniel Messina nine digs against Benet; O’Neill registered 10 kills and six digs vs. Carmel, while Angelo Giannoni had 11 assists and eight digs.

SOFTBALL Niles West dropped three games last week—the first 9-4 to Niles North in the CSL North on April 20, 11-3 to New Trier the next day and 7-6 at Regina on April 22— but on April 23 defeated Evanston, 7-6, as Gianna Mahoney went 3-for-4 and drove in the winning run.

“I knew she was really good,” DeLara said. “Just four years ago we were at the same school and on the same team. A lot of people have asked me about it. ‘Didn’t you play with her your freshman year?’ ‘Yes I did.’ ” DeLara called Loyd “a really good teammate.”

“It was really awesome being able to play with someone so talented,” DeLara said. “Coming in from middle school and not knowing what high school basketball was all about, I know I got a lot better just by playing with such a talented player.”

Niles West compiled a 93-31 record during Loyd’s career as a four-year starter, winning three regional titles, two CSL South championships and a sectional crown. The 5-10 guard averaged nearly 25 points and 12 rebounds per game to go along with 4.7 assists, 3.2 steals and 2.2 blocks (she had 46 double-doubles in her final 62 games).

Loyd is the only player in Illinois girls basketball history to place among the top 12 for career points (3,077, seventh) and rebounds (1,478, 12th).

“We’ve got Evan, Declan, and some pretty good middles,” Doherty said. “Our passing is pretty good but we need to work on defense.”

The Hawks had six serving errors in Game 1, but Granell said his team didn’t control play at the net particularly well that game, either.

“We had a lot of balls that were hit off our blocks and we were really not controlling the net,” he said.

“Not only did she care about us, but she knew when to get in our faces,” DeLara said. “She knew just one single player couldn’t make things happen. She always pushed us to be better than we were.”

Loyd hasn’t forgotten her alma mater, visiting Niles West frequently since graduating in 2012.

“She stops back at school yearround,” Konsewicz said. “She’ll work out here in the summer time.”

Although she wasn’t able to pay a visit this spring due to getting drafted and turning pro, Konsewicz pointed out that Loyd has been at Niles West after spring semester classes at Notre Dame had concluded.

“Three days after losing the national championship last year she stopped by school,” Konsewicz said.

But that’s just Jewell Loyd, he said.

Konsewicz took his four daughters to a Notre Dame home game in early January and spent time with Loyd afterward.

“She remembered every one of my daughters’ names,” Konsewicz said. “Jackie idolizes her, and she wants to go play basketball on a scholarship at Notre Dame just like Jewell. She doesn’t forget the little people; that’s what makes her special.”

Loyd’s influence on young girls’ lives while at Notre Dame was such that Konsewicz recalled seeking

girls wearing Notre Dame T-shirts and jerseys, waiting after the game for Loyd to sign autographs and pose with them for pictures.

“You could see the excitement in the kids’ eyes,” he said. “They waited in line and she didn’t leave until every one of those kids in line got a picture with her or an autograph.”

These days, Loyd is getting acclimated to being in a new city and fitting in with her new team.

“It’s been a great journey,” she said. “I’ve been walking around the city with my brother Jarryd (who played basketball professionally overseas and at Valparaiso University) and getting a good vibe from the city and getting support,” she said. “It’s been pretty awesome just walking around the city and feeling the love and just embracing it.”

The Storm and Tulsa, both members of the WNBA’s West Conference, finished with the worst records in the league last season (12-22).

“We’re rebuilding a new team and it’s a new process together,” Loyd said. “I’ll be putting in a lot of hard work and determination.”

“I think she’s going to do obviously more than compete,” Konsewicz said. “She doesn’t expect to be handed a starting job, and she knows she’s not going to be given anything. She’ll have a huge impact on the professional game. She’s a special person, a special basketball player and a special kid.”

As is usually the case, the CSL South will be a challenge. The Hawks started league play 0-2 last week following losses to Evanston and Glenbrook South, yet Maine South went toe-to-toe with each foe. The Wildkits had to go three games to beat the Hawks, 26-24, 20-25, 26-24, while Glenbrook South needed a marathon victory in Game 1 (34-32) for a two-game win.

last season, and were 6-4 in the conference. The Hawks faced New Trier—which won 32 games and advanced to the Elite Eight last year—and Niles West on consecutive nights this week.

“New Trier, they’re always good,” Walsh said. “The CSL South is always a good conference. I know Evanston has been pretty good this year. Glenbrook South is always pretty good, too.”

“It’s always tough,” Granell added. “I think there are a couple of teams that are down a little bit this year and there’s a couple of teams that are up a little bit this year. It’s still a very tough conference, and I don’t look past anybody.”

Windows 10 gets back to basics, and more Microsoft looks to make good for Windows 8 debacle

with, well, pretty much everyone who tried to use Windows 8 on a desktop or laptop computer. The free update to Windows 8.1 fixed many sins, but by then it was too late.

If you have a mobile device, or a touch-screen enabled computer, you will get a different look.

The touch-based start screen will appear instead of the desktop. This little bit of magic is based in code that detects the type of computer you are using and adjusts the initial screen to match.

Under the Start Menu, you will see a much-improved organization of options. For example, in prior versions the Control Panel, Printers, and Devices were somewhat separated. To me, these are all related and should be under one menu. Windows 7 and 8 sort of fixed it, but still had the old “Control Panel” concept.

Windows 10 fixes this. Everything related to making changes to the computer is grouped under a single “Settings” menu. The submenus under that are logically grouped as well: “Printers”, “Devices”, “Personalizations” etc. Finally, there is one place to go to make changes.

There are many more improvements, but too early to detail those yet. Windows 10 is slated to be released sometime in

August, so we will have to wait till then.

Kiwanis Annual Pancake Breakfast. 7-11 a.m. at the Park Ridge Presbyterian Church, 1300 W. Crescent Ave. The Kiwanis Club of Park Ridge-Morning will hold its Annual Pancake Breakfast on Saturday. The meal will include allyou-can-eat pancakes, sausage and beverages. Prices are: Adults $6 (before May 9) $7 at the door.

Plant and Garden Sale.

The sixth annual Plant and Garden Sale, sponsored by the First United Methodist Church of Park Ridge offers a huge variety of seasoned perennials. In past years, there are been upwards of 500 plants, represented by 130 varieties, including bearded iris, bee balm, coral bells, peonies and even hydrangea, most priced at $6 for a generous container. Senior Check Up and Emergency Response Programs Postal Carrier Watch The Department of Family and Senior Services partners with the Morton Grove Post Office to provide seniors a service called Postal Carrier Watch.

Emergency Response Systems An emergency response system is a communication device, which is linked with an emergency center

staffed by trained professionals.

Caregiver Support Group Are you charged with caring for an older adult, spouse, or partner?

Join other caregivers to discuss your issues and concerns. The meetings center around caregivers and participants can openly discuss their own situations in a supportive, nonjudgmental atmosphere.

The Caregiver Support Group meets the fourth Wednesday of every month from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. All family caregivers are welcome to attend.

AARP Driver Safety Program AARP’s “Driver Safety Program” is an eight-hour two-day course for motorists age 55 and older. It focuses on the physical changes that accompany aging and on

ways drivers can compensate for these changes in improving their driving skills. Upon completion, drivers may receive a discount on a portion of their automobile insurance.

Courses are now offered monthly in Morton Grove. The cost of the course is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members. Inperson registration is required at the American Legion Memorial Civic Center.
