Park District hosts annual all-ages New Year’s Eve party

Park Ridge youngsters who couldn’t stay up until midnight got a chance to celebrate the end of the year with staff at their local park

district. For the 12th year in a row, the Park Ridge Park District hosted a New Year’s Eve party for area children and their families.

The party kicked off at 5 p.m. at the Centennial Fitness Center, and featured food, activities and plenty of music courtesy of the Second

Hand Soul Band. A little after 8 p.m., staff held a “countdown to midnight,” dropping nets worth of balloons and confetti on the excited kids in attendance.

Mary Bart, the park district’s youth and special events supervisor, told the Bugle that the party was created

with a simple goal in mind.

“It’s a great event for the community, because it brings all the generations together,” she said.

“That’s something you don’t see very often.”

Bart added that the event is a great opportunity for kids to hang out with their parents and grandparents and enjoy something together. The party was open to families with children ages 2 and up. The park district charged residents $18 per person, and families had to register

by Dec. 20 to get in.

center gym was filled with inflatables, including an inflatable slide and a set of blow-up basketball hoops.

Mini-golf courses were placed in the middle of the gym. Balloon twisters were there to make swords and other shapes, while photographers from Lake in the Hills-based Images by Sherri took professional quality family portraits.

Renovation, redevelopment top priorities in 2015 and 2016 Looking at past, future major projects

As the new year dawns, the Bugle wanted to revisit some of the major development projects in your area and look ahead to the many projects that are coming down the pipeline in 2016.

On Jan. 17, the Niles Park District held a grand reopening for the IceLand Skate and Swim Complex. Over the past two years, different parts have been closed as contractors built a new, larger outdoor rink, reconfigured the indoor rink lobby, put in new floors, and added a new cooling system for indoor and outdoor rinks. Most of the work on both rinks was completed by the end of 2014, but contractors still had to finish a few things throughout the first few weeks of January 2015.

On May 29, the Morton Grove Public Library held a grand reopening of its own. Between September 2014 and May 2015, most of the building was closed off as contractors worked to repair the roof, remodel the interiors and make sure the asbestos was safely abated. While the library board originally wanted to simply fix the roof, it realized that taking care of other projects at the same time would save time and costs.

During the renovations, new Teen Room space and a quiet room were added. All of the books previously stored at the mezzanine level were moved downstairs to make room for new study rooms, staff area and a multimedia lab that included VHS and DVD conversion equipment and computers with digital media software. The renovations also turned what used to be the teen section into a newspaper and magazine area, which doubled as a lounge where patrons can buy hot coffee or tea for $1 a cup.

While the Niles Public Library did most of its renovations in 2013, it did make one major change.

On Sept. 19, it unveiled two new multimedia spaces – Wonder Ground and Creative Studios.

Wonder Ground is a space where elementary school kids have an opportunity to take part

in activities and projects dealing with various aspects of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. Creative Studios are geared toward teenagers and adults, providing equipment for multimedia and arts and crafts projects. Patrons who use Creative Studios can also check out equipment such as GoPro video cameras.

For Park Ridge, the ear marked a new chapter for one of the city’s most iconic spaces. In December 2014, Pickwick Restaurant closed its doors after five decades of operation. But the space didn’t stay vacant for long. After months of construction, the Pick restaurant opened its doors in September.

Co-owner Tim Griffin restored the space’s original doors and windows, while remodeling the interior. The original plans called for a new sign, but because the restaurant is housed inside the historic Pickwick Theater building, he wound up using a sign similar to its predecessor, reusing “pick” letters. The “wick” letters were placed prominently on the restaurant’s back wall.

The Pick serves more upscale, higher-price fare than Pickwick Restaurant’s diner-style menu, though it still follows a traditional American cuisine template.

By summer 2016, Niles is expected to see its first businessclass hotel.

The Holiday Inn Express will be located near the spot where Waukegan Road splits off from Milwaukee Avenue, stretching across the two lots formerly occupied by Travelers Inn and the former Ozzie’s Bar and Grill restaurant. The hotel will have 100 rooms, and it will include the Business Center area, a 1,500 square foot meeting room space and a fitness center.

2016 should also see progress on several long-term projects that aren’t scheduled to be finished until 2017. Niles is expected to make significant headway on the long-awaited Cleveland Sewer Improvement Project, which aims to reduce flooding in eastern Niles, Pace is planning to start building stations, and making traffic signal and street enhancements to pave the way for the Milwaukee Pulse Arterial Rapid Transit bus line. plans call for wheelchair-accessible stations with raised platforms and real time bus arrival information.

The Golf Mill Shopping Center station will also get Ventra fare card vending machines.

But perhaps the biggest project coming down the pipeline is the long-delayed redevelopment of the Park Ridge Youth Campus.

Originally a private boarding school for orphaned girls, it eventually evolved into a facility for abused and neglected children that were removed from their homes. It was designated a national landmark in 1998. The campus closed in June 2012.

Morton Grove man killed in snowplow accident 80-year-old victim succumbed to injuries at home By bugle staff nweditor@buglenewspapers.com @NilesILNews

A Morton Grove man died Tuesday morning after being hit by a snowplow that was clearing his driveway.

Morton Grove police said 80-year-old Agostino Comella fell in his driveway and was struck by a privately contracted snowplow. Comella sustained life-threatening injuries and died on the scene.

in the 9200 block of Ozark at approximately 9:20 a.m. and found Morton Grove fire personnel treating a pedestrian lying in the driveway. The vehicle, a 2007 GMC Carryall snowplow, was operated by another Morton Grove man. No other injuries were reported, and police said alcohol or drugs are not considered factors in the accident.

Investigators with the Morton Grove Police Department and members of the North Regional Major Crimes Task Force Major Crash Assistance Team were called to the scene to investigate the incident.

Police said the crash remains under investigation and that more information would be released as it becomes available.

Park district staff also set up a makeshift food court by the gym’s west wall. Their offerings included Italian sausage, Italian beef, various pastas, roasted potatoes, roasted vegetables and salad. They also offered a separate kids menu that included butter noodles, cheese pizza slices, hot dogs, chicken tenders and French fries.

In the “stage” area by the north wall, Chicago area’s Second Hand Soul Band performed classic Motown, soul and rock & roll songs, as well as some more contemporary songs.

Guests were encouraged to dance, and kids could borrow

musical instruments and play along.

At around 7:45 p.m., the staff members signaled that everyone should get ready for the countdown. Guests picked up party hats, noisemakers and other party apparel.

Children gathered in the stage area, underneath the large nets filled with balloons. Before the countdown, Bart announced five prize-drawing winners – Mathew Culbertson, Victoria Matuszak, Michael Tegethoff and Joseph Kenobi Carpeeter.

A little after 8 p.m., guests counted down, and staff sent balloons falling out of the nets.

The party ended with kids grabbing a few balloons for themselves and smashing the rest.

This year, let us continue to focus on the abilities of those of us with special needs, as we educate our communities on how to bring pure joy and determination to everything that we do.

Take, for example, a relatively new challenge to help do just that. This past year, Special Olympics launched a new challenge called “P.L.A.Y.

#LetsChangeTheGame.” The challenge is simple. Its mission is to encourage all people to play, learn, accept and say “yes” together. The goal is to have common ground among people of all abilities.

To give a specific example, this past week I and my fellow SEASPAR Special Olympics teammates had the opportunity to play what Special Olympics calls unified basketball. The Level Up youth basketball team, based in Downers Grove, consisted of players without disabilities. They partnered with my team in playing a fun unified scrimmage game. Together, the Level Up youth basketball players played with us and learned about our differences. These

Submitted by Cook County LWV On any given day more than 8,000 people are confined in the Cook County Jail. Most of these folks (90 percent) haven’t been convicted of anything: they’re simply awaiting their day in court. This is costly to the county, disruptive to the accused and often unnecessary for public safety.

Based on 18 months of study, interviews and multiple bond court visits, the League of Women Voters of Cook County today proposed a set of reforms to change the way the county’s citizens are treated between the time of their arrest and the date of their trial.

Chief among the proposals is one to discontinue the practice of requiring those charged to post cash bail. Cash bail is inherently unequal. Wealthier people post bail and return to their community, while people without the

means to post bail end up in jail.

“If defendants are judged not to be a threat to any person or the community and are found likely to return to court, they should be released . . . . If defendants are a risk to the community or a flight risk, they should be kept in jail,” the report states, noting that other cities have dramatically reduced the use of cash bail without significant increases in defendants’ absconding or committing additional crimes.

Abolishing bail would take an act of the state legislature, but the LWV’s report urges judges to put a stop to it now.

Other proposals in the report include: Adding more bond court locations and assigning more judges to hear bond court cases. Overcrowding in Central Bond Court results in unequal justice: in Chicago judges have only 2 minutes to determine whether to send a defendant to jail, while in the suburbs those hearings may last 15 minutes per arrestee.

Giving bond court judges better information about the many alternatives to jailing defendants before trial. There are behavioral health programs run by the state’s attorney’s office and the sheriff, as well as special courts designed to address the problems of veterans accused of crime or of defendants in need of drug treatment. However, not every judge is aware of all the options, resulting in unequal opportunities for those accused.

Changing procedures for drug arrests. Currently it takes up to three weeks for the state crime lab to analyze suspicious substances. Many arrested for drug offenses are kept in jail until the drug chemistry reports come back. The LWV recommends releasing defendants pending test results or testing drugs immediately in the field at the time of arrest.

There may not have been many fans left in the gym when Niles West tipped off at 10 p.m.

Wednesday night against Warren Township, but the ones who were there saw a performance for the ages.

Niles West junior Octavius Parker II set a tournament record by hitting nine three pointers in the Wolves’ 51-47 win.

The previous record was eight, held by Alec Goetz of St. Charles North in 2013.

“I didn’t know I was close to the record,” Parker said. “I just kept shooting. Coach was drawing up plays and my teammates got me the ball and I was just converting today.”

Parker finished the game with 28 points, hitting nine of 16 from three-point range. He holds a record in a tournament that has been around for 85 years and has featured talent such as Derrick Rose, Jabari Parker and Cliff Alexander.

“He is a heck of a talented basketball player and a great kid and I couldn’t be happier for him,” said Niles West coach Bob Williams. “Our biggest problem has been finishing. Six of our losses have been games when we have been ahead or within one possession in the fourth quarter and we end up losing. We are learning and that is why you come here. Warren has a great program and a winning tradition and that is why we come here, to play those kinds of teams.”

Parker tallied 19 points in the first quarter and at one point held a 16-4 lead over Warren himself.

“It was impressive, but I have to give it all to my teammates,” Parker said. “They found me open and I was just able to hit some shots. I was zoned in. It was crazy.

It was just a great night.”

After tearing up the first quarter, Parker missed several shots before getting back in a rhythm and propelling the Wolves to the win.

The win came on the heels of a 75-71 overtime loss to Oak ParkRiver Forest earlier in the day.

Evan Hines led the team with 24 points, while Parker added 19 and Mirsad Mackic added 15.

The Wolves were not originally scheduled to have a doubleheader, but the tournament was postponed on Monday when the Pontiac area was hit by an ice storm, causing the power at the high school to go out.

The power was also out at the hotel Niles West stayed in, making for a cold night.

“It was tough. It was a long night with no power in the rooms,” Parker said. “The rooms were cold, we took cold showers in the

morning and then played earlier today and that game started late.

Then we lost in overtime to a tough opponent, so it felt good to get out here and get the win. We went 0-2 last year and we didn’t want to do that again.”

Williams said he made sure to keep the team focused through the distractions.

“Everything that could have gone wrong did, it was hard to tell what time of day it was,” Williams said. “It was a long night for us, but I tried to remind the players that it was a longer night for the people of Pontiac who had basements flooding and had no electricity and we tried to keep it in perspective.”

The Wolves’ tournament run came to an end with a 73-61 loss to Plainfield North in the third game.

Mackic paced the team with 23 points, while Parker added 10.

Genovesi picks win win No. 500 in career

While Niles West, St. Charles East and Waubonsie Valley just planned to compete in a Saturday afternoon wrestling dual meet, for Notre Dame, the team was there to reach a milestone.

With a win over the host Waubonsie Valley, Dons’ coach Auggie Genovesi won his 500th match of his 38-year career. He is only the ninth coach in Illinois history to reach that record.

“I have been lucky,” Genovesi said. “I have had a lot of good coaches and a lot of good kids

and an administration that backs us. I have been really fortunate.

These kids keep us young.”

“It is an amazing accomplishment,” said senior Jake Barzowski. “He loves the sport. I don’t know anyone who loves the sport more except the rest of our staff. I am really happy for him, it’s great.”

Genovesi said there is one main reason he has remained in the game this long.

“This is still fun,” Genovesi said.

“My coaches all either wrestled for me, grew up with me or went to school with me. We have great kids. Yeah, we yell and scream at them a bit, but I tell them to worry

when I stop. But they get it and the yelling and screaming isn’t necessary with most of them.

“We have 80 kids in the program, but we work at it. We go to grade school tournaments and you get to know the kids in the neighborhood and we have our own club. It is all about family.”

Some of those kids that are making this season a success are “The Barzowski brothers, Jake and Josh, Andy Poniatowski, Matt Bernal, Tommy Simon and Tommy Reneir have been doing well,” Genovesi said. “We don’t tell one guy he is the superstar, it is all about team. We have a bunch of good kids and they

are smart kids. When a parent is making an investment of $10,000 a year for their kids’ education, we have smart kids and they have some skin in the game.”

Not only is the team talented, they work hard.

“Our JV team had two tournaments over the holidays, our freshmen had two tournaments, so these guys only had off on Christmas,” Genovesi said. “After next week, we will slow down and give them two days off.”

There are still goals for the Dons to work toward this season.

“We can still win conference

and can still win regional and after that, it’s the luck of the draw,” Genovesi said.

Jake Barzowski is one of the wrestlers looking for a strong showing in the state series.

“I have been enjoying the season so far,” he said. “Last year I was hurt and didn’t really have a junior year. We started a little slow as a team, but we have been getting better. Our coaches said this could be a turning point for us and I think it has. Everyone is starting to wrestle really well and that helps.

“This is all practice for the last three weeks of the year.”

‘Pizza Wars’ to raise money for students in need Annual event is District 219 Education Foundation’s signature fundraiser More than 50 students in the District 219 area are currently homeless, and the District 219 Education Foundation wants to help these students and the many others in need with its sixth annual foodfocused fundraiser, Pizza Wars 6. The fundraiser is scheduled for Jan. 20, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. ,at the Niles North High School main gymnasium, 9800 Lawler Ave., Skokie.

Pizza Wars has become the District 219 Education Foundation’s signature annual fundraiser, assisting children in need in the Niles Township area and servicing the villages of Skokie, Morton Grove, Lincolnwood, Niles and Golf.

More than 1,000 people attended last year’s Pizza Wars and sampled pizza from 10 of the township’s pizzerias, all while raising more than $17,500 for the 219 District Education Foundation. This year, Pizza Wars 6 hopes to break the $20,000 mark.

Each year, around 10 area pizza

restaurants participate in Pizza Wars, bringing their signature pizza to the competition. The 2015 Pizza War winner was Father & Son Italian Kitchen. This year’s contenders will include: Bar Louie, Father & Son Italian Kitchen, Gulliver’s, Jet’s Pizza, Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria, OrganicLife, Riggio’s, Village Inn Pizzeria and WaPa-Getti’s. Costco. Nothing Bundt Cakes will provide dessert.

Pizza Wars 6 will commence with a standoff between the four area mayors in a pizza eating battle to see who can consume the most pizza in five minutes. Skokie Mayor George Van Dusen, Morton Grove Mayor Daniel DiMaria, Lincolnwood Mayor Jerry Turry and Niles Mayor Andrew Przybylo will participate.

After the mayoral showdown, attendees can enjoy pizza tastings from the participating pizzerias and cast their single vote for best pizza.

The trophy for the winning pizza will be awarded at 7:30 p.m.

Advance tickets for Pizza Wars 6 are now on sale for only $12 per person, but will be $15 per person at the door. The evening will also feature live entertainment from the Niles North High School and Niles West High School student bands.

Tickets may be purchased on the District 219 Education Foundation website at www.219foundation.org.

Attendees are encouraged to bring in nonperishable food items and those who do will receive a free raffle ticket. Additional raffle tickets will be sold, $3 for one or $5 for two, for chances to win gift cards and other prizes. Sponsorship opportunities are currently available for a donation at levels of $350 and $500.

The foundation said there is an increasing need of money for food and financial assistance for student’s families that have fallen on difficult times. More than 37 percent of the students within Niles Township are in need of everyday supplies, according to District 219. The foundation has awarded more than $160,000 in grants and scholarships.

Students prep for allstate theater production Maine Township High School District 207 students and staff will play roles in the January 2016 all-state production of “Rent,” the centerpiece of this year’s Illinois High School Theatre Festival.

Cast members include Maine East students Derek Liavas, Yula Sung and Gabriela Szczepaniec, along with Maine South students Jack Cahill-Lemme and Eamon Hurd. District 207 crew members are Agata Pacia, Janel Leon and Tristan Gammell from Maine East and Kiara Irizarry, Hannah Henley and Ann Kapustiak from Maine South. Matt Magno and Cassie Opena, both of Maine East, are members of the pit band. Liavas, Cahill-Lemme, Pacia, Irizarry, Magno and Opena are all making their second consecutive appearance in the statewide event, having also been selected for last year’s production of “Pippin.”

Veronica Lynn, who directs Maine East’s spring play, is working as a costumes, makeup and props assistant on the production staff.

The Illinois High SchoolTheatre Festival is the nation’s largest and oldest non-competitive high school theatre festival. The performances of “Rent” will be at Braden Auditorium in the Bone Student Center at Illinois State University, in Normal, Jan. 8 and Jan. 9.

According to the festival’s program, “‘Rent’ follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians living under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. How these young bohemians negotiate their dreams, loves and conflicts provides the narrative thread to this groundbreaking musical. Rent is about falling in love, finding your voice and living for today.”

Avoid fitness resolution mistakes with research Better Business Bureau offers New Year’s advice on gym, health club memberships Getting into better shape is one of the most popular New Year’s resolutions and that means it’s a boon for health clubs. However, this goal can turn into a boondoggle for those who choose to join.

Gyms and health club memberships can be expensive, so the Better Business Bureau advises consumers to treat a gym membership like any major purchase and do their research before signing on the dotted line.

Billing and collection issues, along with overall unhappiness with the membership contract, are top consumer concerns, as the number of complaints filed with the BBB against health clubs has remained steady.

“The number of complaints

filed show that the negative issues surrounding gym memberships show no sign of change,” said Steve Bernas, president and CEO of the BBB serving Chicago and northern Illinois. “Picking the best gym or fitness center for your personal interests can be a difficult choice, so check each one’s rating on the BBB website.”

Five questions consumers should ask a gym before joining: What are the terms of any introductory offers?

Gyms often use special introductory offers to lure in new members. Make sure you understand the terms and what the price will be once the introductory period is over.

Will my membership renew automatically?

Many times people who join a gym don’t realize that their contract renews automatically and that they would have to take specific steps to cancel their contract.

How can I get out of my contract?

Getting out of a gym contract isn’t always as easy as getting into one, so make sure you understand what steps you would need to take to cancel your membership.

What happens if I move?

Gyms have any number of different policies when it comes to how moving will affect your membership. It might depend on how far away you’re moving and if they have other locations nearby.

What happens if the gym goes out of business?

Ask the gym to explain what will happen to your money if they suddenly close down.

Additionally, the BBB said consumers should ask themselves several questions when considering gym or health clubs.

These questions include: What are my fitness goals?

Determining your fitness goals in advance will help you select a facility that is most appropriate for you. If you have a serious health condition, consult with a medical professional when setting your fitness goals.

Is this location convenient?

If the gym is across town, you’ll be less likely to work out. Choose a fitness club that is convenient to work or home so the location is not a deterrent to getting exercise.

Can I really afford this every month?

Monthly gym fees add up and, after any introductory periods are over, the price could jump higher than your budget can handle.

Do the math before you join and make sure you can afford a gym membership.

This year, let’s take time to focus on the pure joyous moments of all of our lives. One can snap a photo, write a blog post or column, or podcast anecdotes that showcase those moments that bring about pure joy. One can also simply relate anecdotes of joyous moments, while engaging in old-fashioned conversation.

One such pure joyful episode occurred to me this past summer.

The date was July 25, and I was standing on the field at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The opening ceremony of the Special Olympics 2015 World Summer Games was taking place.

I was standing among my fellow Special Olympics athletes. We were celebrating our abilities— whether we were there on that global stage as an athlete or a journalist. For those in attendance, we celebrated our acceptance and inclusion within the world.

Another pure joyful moment for me also occurred this past year in Normal, Illinois, at the 2015 Summer Games for Special Olympics Illinois. This time I was with previous “Special Voices” athletes Erin Compton and Becky Cavanagh, both diagnosed with Down syndrome. It was at the opening ceremony that I first met Erin and Becky. The #UnifiedSelfie that the three of us captured that first night of the weekend showed the pure joy that those of us with special needs can bring to our communities.

Many of us with special needs demonstrate determination in everything we do. We work so hard to achieve our goals despite any challenges that we face. One of my former special education teachers, Leann Philgren, personally witnessed the hard work ethic that my fellow classmates at Westmont High School and I had displayed.

In a past Special Chronicles podcast, Leann spoke about the determination, perseverance and

ability to overcome obstacles that those of us with special needs bring to our world.

“He’s so powerful. He’s one of those students that work so hard to be successful,” said Leann. “What you guys bring to our population is a gift.”

Our parents, in addition to our teachers, are ones that firsthand recognize the determination that we show the world.

“The ability to smile and carry on no matter the circumstances is something that Erin teaches us all,” said Diane Compton, mother of Erin. “Not expecting life to be perfect for it to be joyful.”

This year, let us recall the joyous moments and determination that those of us with special needs bring to our world.

Join me in the new year, and let’s change the game in bringing about pure joy to our world.

St. John Brebeuf upgrades ‘green’ lighting fixtures As part of its three-year capital improvement campaign, St. John Brebeuf began the process of a complete replacement of old lighting fixtures to new LED units throughout the Niles campus.

The total project consists of changing the lighting on the inside and outside of the church, lighting on the parking lots and grounds, and inside and outside of the school and gym.

The project would have cost SJB more than $33,000, but the ComEd energy efficiency program “Smart Ideas for Your Business” provided the parish with a grant for $12,764. The cost to SJB was about $20,000.

The Park District originally hoped to start construction in 2014. But in November 2014, the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency finished its review of the plans and ordered the district not to demolish the Emery Cottage.

The district had to revise its plans

and resubmit them for Park Ridge City Council approval. The council approved the revised plans in March 2015, and demolition started a week later.

According to the Park District website, the construction is currently well under way. The documents submitted to the city council indicate that the district is hoping to finish construction by May 2016.
