Grad surprises brother, family at assembly U.S. Marine Jeremy Erjavac graduated from Niles West in 2014

When Niles West High School senior Christopher Erjavac saw a U.S. Marine performing the National Anthem with a firefighter and a police officer at his school’s homecoming assembly, he immediately thought of his older brother.

Jeremy Erjavac, who serves in Washington, D.C., rarely has the opportunity to visit home. Because of his schedule, the brothers do not even get many opportunities to talk over the phone.

The two are close, and seeing a Marine at his school reminded Christopher of his older brother.

The last thing he expected was to hear the announcer say his brother’s name.

Unbeknownst to Christopher, and most of the other members of his family, Jeremy arrived in town a few hours early. Their grandmother, Mary Ellen Yactor, helped arrange the surprise.

As the shock wore off and the reality sank in, the brothers told reporters that they were simply happy to see each other and look-

The brothers grew up in Morton Grove. Jeremy also attended Niles West, graduating in 2014. He told reporters that he was on the school’s basketball, football, wrestling and golf teams. Looking back, he said he wished he took sports and school more seriously.

“I would have tried harder,”

the Niles West graduate said. “I would’ve gotten more involved.”

Three days after his graduation, he joined the Marine Corps.

According to Karyn Malench, Niles Township High School District 219’s community relations technical assistant, Erjavac went through 13 weeks of basic training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, becoming a squad

leader in the process.

After getting more specialized training at the Camp Pendleton School of Infantry, Erjavac earned the rank of Lance Corporal. He is stationed in Washington, D.C. Because of his commitments, he rarely gets to see his family.

“When he’s not home, it’s almost feels like a piece is missing,” Christopher said.

Aside from his grandmother, no one in Jeremy’s family knew he was coming home for a visit. His mother, Michelle Erjavac, was told that the family was invited to the homecoming assembly because Christopher would be receiving an award. When Jeremy came out to sing the National Anthem, she didn’t realize it was her son “I even said to myself ‘cool – they have a Marine here, singing the National Anthem,’” Michelle said.

But when she heard who the Marine was, she couldn’t quite believe her ears until her eldest son came up to hug her.

“I don’t get to see him very often, so it was great,” she said. “I told him ‘I can’t believe you are here.’”

Up in the bleachers, Christopher couldn’t quite believe it either.

When he saw his brother embrace his mother, he didn’t have to think twice – he walked down to join them.

“I was so excited,” the Niles West senior said. “I’m still shaking.”

Niles Library OKs alcohol at special events Policy was introduced due to a recent change in state law

The Niles Public Library Board of Trustees voted unanimously to allow alcohol to be sold and distributed at special events.

However, the vote doesn’t mean that alcohol would be allowed at every event. When staff

wants to serve drinks, it must make a request to the board, which must then vote on whether to approve alcohol sales.

If allowed, drinks would have to be served in a space that’s separate from the general library areas – such as the large meeting room – and drinks must stay inside that space. The policy also states that alcohol can’t be served to patrons under the age of 21.

The policy was introduced due to a recent change in state law, which allowed libraries to

sell and serve alcohol at special events – but only if it has a policy in place.

Library Director Susan Lempke told the library board that she wanted to make sure the policy was on the books just in case it’s ever needed.

“I don’t anticipate that this is something we’ll be doing very often.” she said. “I would see it as probably only for the most special occasions, or if there was possibly a program that’s directly related to [alcohol].”

Lempke also emphasized that the board had full control over any decisions about if and when alcohol would be served.

“It will always remain in board’s hands to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ on any particular proposal,” she said. “This is just to make it possible.”

Jeremy said he was pleased to see teachers who made a difference in his life, and some students he remembered from school.

Christopher eventually went back to the bleachers, and the rest of the family got to watch the assembly from special seats near the entrance. Most family members stayed through the entire event.

Jeremy said he would be returning to Washington, D.C., Oct. 3.

Even though Christopher and Jeremy don’t have any grand plans, they’re looking forward to that favorite universal pastime of brothers. “[We’ll] just hang out,” Christopher said.

Park Ridge police investigate armed robbery Detectives from the Park Ridge Police Department are investigating an armed robbery that occurred last week at a business in the 900 block of North Northwest Highway.

Officers responded to the business at approximately 6:40 a.m. Sept. 21, and learned that a male suspect entered the establishment, implied he had a gun and demanded that an employee give him money from the register. The employee gave an undetermined amount of cash to the suspect, who then ran from the scene south on Rowe Avenue.

The suspect was described as a white male between the ages of 20 and 30 years old and clean shaven. At the time, he was wearing a grey stocking cap, black hoodie, grey athletic pants and black shoes, and carrying a grey satchel.

Park Ridge police are asking anyone with information to contact the department at 847318-5252.

Residents divided on parking lot proposal City council to reconsider zoning commission’s denial of application

The Park Ridge City Council did not vote on a zoning application that would turn a currently vacant lot near the intersection of Devon, Talcott and Cortland into a parking lot. But, homeowners who live nearby still had plenty to say.

Earlier this year, Park Ridge Community Bank, which owns the lot, and Skyline Home Investments LLC, which owns the land directly south of it, filed a joint application to change the zoning at 1110 S. Courtland Ave. Most of the land would become a parking lot that the two applicants intend to share, and a small portion of the south side of the land would become part of the mixed-used development Skyline planned to build on its property.

The Park Ridge Planning and Zoning Commission voted 3-4 to deny the application.

Now, the city council must either agree with the denial or override the commission’s decision.

The vote was originally supposed to take place during the Sept. 19 meeting. But due to what officials described as an accidental oversight, the necessary resolution was not included in the aldermen’s council packets and the city council could not vote.

Instead, aldermen allowed residents who attended the meeting

to speak on the issue, and agreed to vote on it over the course of the next two council meetings.

The land is located directly next to the northeast side of Park Ridge Community Bank. According to the council packet materials, it has been vacant for about 31 years and owned by the bank for the last 21 years. The land that Skyline owns has an office building that has been vacant for the past few months.

While the developer did not offer any specifics, it indicated that the development would be mixed use.

The application originally went before the planning and zoning commission on June 14. According to the meeting notes, Skyline and the bank originally asked the entire lot to be rezoned from residential to business.

In response to concerns from residents who live nearby, the committee recommended that they amend the application so that the 15-foot section that Skyline planned to add to their property be rezoned for business use and the rest for parking. The commission considered the amended application July 26 but it was denied.

At both meetings, residents expressed concerns that the parking lot would increase traffic, affect property values and impact students at nearby Roosevelt Elementary School.

nials by the planning and zoning commission or vote to overturn that body’s decision. While the former can be done with a simple majority vote, the later requires a supermajority vote.

The Park Ridge Department of Community Preservation and Development was supposed to prepare the resolution for a city council vote Sept. 19. For reasons that were not clear at the time of the meeting, the resolution was not prepared, and city attorney Julie Tappendorf told aldermen that they could not take any action without it.

Acting Mayor Marty Maloney said he still wanted those stake-

holders who came to speak about the resolution a chance to address the council. He added that everyone who also wanted to speak at the next meeting would be allowed to do so.

Jason Christopoulous, of the 1000 block of Cortland, spoke in favor of the project, saying that the opposition expressed at previous meetings did not necessarily reflect the opinion of all residents near the proposed parking lot. He argued that the parking lot would be a better use of the land then what’s currently there.

“It’s a blighted spot, and I think it’s beneficial to work with people who are willing to [redevelop] this

blighted area,” he said. “To have people invested in the [Talcott, Cortland] corner is important…”

Christopoulous added that, as a community bank, the Park Ridge Community Bank deserved some help from the community. He also bristled at the notion that the proposal would lower his property values.

“It’s going to enhance my property value, and it’s going to help a blighted community,” Christopoulous said.

Mary Ronczy, who also lives in the 1000 block of South Cortland, argued that the bank has not done enough to try to redevelop the property as a residential space. She said she and her neighbors would prefer to see something residential go up on the vacant lot.

“I’d like to note that it’s important to people in this area that this lot continue as residential,” Ronczy said.

Diane Hamel, who said she lived in the area since 2009, expressed support for the proposal because it would, according to her, bring much-needed redevelopment to this part of Park Ridge.

“What I see as a big issue as a taxpayer, is that [the city] invested so much money in Uptown,” she said. “We allowed South Park to die.”

The council is currently expected to hold a first vote on the issue during the next city council meeting, which is scheduled for Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. According to Maloney, the council will do two readings.

The second and final reading is expected during the Oct. 17 meeting.

Services campaign focuses on suicide prevention Month-long campaign highlights importance of seeking help September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, and Niles Family Services is working to promote suicide prevention and raise awareness.

The month-long campaign will highlight the importance of seeking help or assistance before a crisis situation occurs, as well as dispel the myths and stigma attached to seeking support, the

NFS said.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S. Niles Family Services said it has seen a growing need for crisis support among teens, adults and seniors.

Gains and Losses Obesity rates fall in a few states but still far higher than 1990

The answer is “yes but,” says the Trust for America’s Health, a nonprofit, non-partisan group that aims to protect the health of communities and make disease prevention a national priority. And a study of healthcare quality and quantity across the nation suggests some reasons why things are not improving uniformly.

Obesity is a disease, and for the last 13 years the Trust and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation have monitored obesity rates in the country, focusing on the proportion of a state’s population that is obese. The study designates someone as obese whose body mass index (a measure based on height and weight) is 30 or higher.

This year’s results show that after a decade in which every state’s obese population rose, a few states have finally experienced a decrease.

“We’re seeing the rates plateau albeit at a very high level,” says Richard Hamburg, the interim president of the Trust.

Although rates have dropped in Montana, Minnesota, New York, and Ohio, even those decreased rates are still high. Twenty-six percent of adults

in Minnesota were still considered obese, and nearly 30 percent were in Ohio. Even in the states with the lowest rates - Colorado, California, Utah, Montana, Hawaii and Massachusetts - rates remain between 20 and 25 percent.

Twenty-two of the 25 states with the highest adult obesity rates are in the South and Midwest, including Kansas and Kentucky, both of which experienced an increase.

To put this in perspective, Hamburg told me that in 1980 no state had a rate above 15 percent; in 1990 no rate was above 20 percent. “Colorado is the healthiest state but exceeded the 20 percent rate years ago,” he said.

What happened? Hamburg explained that many societal changes have conspired to increase obesity rates. Children have less opportunity for physical activities; parents are no longer comfortable sending their kids out to play and telling them to come home by dark.

Other reasons?

Sedentary activities like computer games have replaced physical activity.

Many schools no longer offer physical education, and are not always open for physical activity after the

school day ends.

More kids arrive at school via car or bus. In 1969, 89 percent of kids walked or rode their bikes to school.

By 2009, the number had dropped to 35 percent.

Eating habits are different, too, with families eating more often in restaurants, including fast food establishments, and consuming more added sugars and fats. Many families eat at McDonalds or Burger King a few times a week, but even if they cooked at home, they might not be eating “healthy” because they don’t have access to fresh fruits and vegetables.

Hamburg told me 30 million people don’t have easy access to a supermarket; many residents in dense urban areas have to walk or take public transportation more than a mile to get more than a “convenience store” selection. Many in rural areas must drive 10 miles or more.

Powerful marketing from the food industry is also a culprit, beckoning consumers to eat pizza, overstuffed tacos, and sodas without regard for the effect on their weight or health.

I usually don’t pay much attention to state rankings from various groups. Most people aren’t going to move to another state just because it ranks better on whatever is being measured. But this time I did because as the obesity report came out, a personal finance website, WalletHub, announced its latest report “2016’s States with the Best & Worst Health Care.” And I was struck by a possible connection.

TIF money down the drain ‘I do not see the payback of this stormwater work’ I read with interest the article in the Sept. 22 issue of the Morton Grove Champion about planned stormwater work. There was no mention of the contamination in that area, which prevented the start of construction of the new Moretti’s Restaurant on Demp-

ster.

Will this contamination be removed before any future improvements are done and who is going to pay for this?

Residents of the village are wondering why their property tax bills keep going up and the village answers that most of this is due to payments to the area schools.

What they don’t say is that the TIF fund is holding back payments to the schools [and] increasing this problem.

The $4.3 million of TIF money does

not have to be exhausted on improvements in the TIF. When the TIF contracts mature, any leftover money is redistributed to schools and other municipal projects.

That is, if anything is left over at that time.

I do not see the payback of this stormwater work except for the construction company doing the work.

Maine East football growing through feeder programs

From a distance, one tends to write off the Maine East football program.

The Blue Demons have gotten the short end of the talent stick within the district, especially compared to powerhouse Maine South.

According to the IHSA website, they haven’t had a winning record since 1978 with much of the 80s and the early 90s not posted.

They haven’t won four games in a season since 1996 and have only won three games twice this century with two wins in a season three times. So, what are the biggest reasons for this? It has all to do with lack of feeder programs and experienced players rather than the effort that the players and coaches are putting in year after year.

“I love these kids,” second-year head coach Scott Smith said. “A lot of kids are playing football for the first time or their second year in football as varsity players. Kids who have been brought up through programs can make adjustments on

the field. Our kids are learning. We have nice freshmen numbers and a lot of young players on the field.

That is what I’m trying to change most now. That we aren’t going to give up. We’re going to fight and play and not give in to anybody. It is tough.”

That means that while many other coaches throughout the state are spending summers and regular seasons developing and improving talent and working in new schemes and plays, Maine East is coaching basics and fundamentals, trying to teach their athletes how to play the sport.

“I believe here at Maine East we have the toughest job as varsity football coaches,” Smith said.

“When these other varsity coaches get these players at the varsity level, they are refining skills and creating their offense. Here, we are all fundamental. That is our focus. We can’t do as much as other teams because our kids don’t know football, so we teach them every facet of the game.”

“We have some good athletes, but we don’t have that 4.5 kid,” Smith said. “Jakhari Dobson has only played a few games. He has caught a couple big passes and has some speed. He is 6-foot, 180 pounds and we have one of him.

Some of these other teams have eight or nine guys like him. It is tough when you don’t have a ton of big kids or fast and strong kids. The weight room was good in the summer. We are stronger than we were last year. We are going to keep battling and working and hoping we can get more competitive and win three or four games in a year.”

That hard work in the weight room paid immediate dividends this year as the Demons took down Schurz in the season opener after going winless in Smith’s first season.

“It was important,” Smith said of the win. “For the last nine years we have been playing Schurz and it has been close and back-and-forth and it was close again. I was happy for them. Our seniors hadn’t won on the field, so I was happy for them. It was good to get that first one.”

Despite the recent string of losses, Smith is happy with the progress the players are making.

“We feel like we are getting better every week,” he said. “I think we will be competitive in our conference. We will continue to work.”

One big change Smith has already seen from previous years is the fight the players have. No matter the score, they won’t give up.

“It was too easy to see kids putting their heads down in the past,” Smith said. “With the way things have been going in some of these games, they could do it again. The thing I’m most pleased about with these kids is that they play four quarters as hard as they play. It doesn’t matter what the scoreboard says. It is about us learning how to play and compete for four quarters.”

With a new feeder program for Maine East, the future is looking much brighter than the past as Smith hopes to steadily build the team into a contender. But he has to keep the younger players engaged and in the program to reap the benefits in future years.

“Going forward, we have 37 freshmen, which is the largest number we have had in a long time,” Smith said. “There are some talented kids there. We have about 12 sophomores and five or six play a lot. We want to keep those fresh-

Students named National Merit semifinalists Finalists will be notified in February Maine Township High School District 207 announced that eleven senior students earned semifinalist status in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship program.

Maine West students Elias Haworth, Benjamin Heim and Anna Remus, and Maine South Margaret Cahill, Katherine Daehler, Anastasia Dalianis, Wesley Dziedzic, Maura Lally, Santino Mistrata, Nicole Skora and Sean Stapleton are among the roughly 16,000 semifinalist qualifiers nationwide.

High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Each student must submit a detailed scholarship application, including an essay and information about the student’s participation and leadership in school and community activities. Approximately 1.5 million students entered the 2017 competition.

These students have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,300 National Merit Scholarships totaling more than $34 million to be offered next spring.

Finalists will be notified in February, and all scholarship winners will be selected from that group in the spring and early summer of 2017.

Of the three types of scholarships that will be offered to qualifying students, National Merit $2,500 scholarships will be awarded on a state representational basis; corporate-sponsored scholarships will be provided by approximately 240 corporations and business organization; and about 200 colleges and universities are expected to finance some 4,800 Merit Scholarship awards for finalists who will attend the sponsoring institution.

Merit Scholarship awards are supported by some 440 independent sponsors and by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation’s own funds. Sponsor organizations include corporations and businesses, company foundations, professional associations, and colleges and universities.

Foundation commits $225K for MAP grants grant helps 141 MAP-eligible students attending Oakton College The Oakton Community College Educational Foundation is making sure students in financial need are covered for Monetary Award Program grants this year.

The foundation said it would set aside $225,000 in grants for students who need MAP in order to afford a college education.

“These are among our most financially vulnerable students,

and covering MAP funding for them allows the students to continue their education,” Oakton Community College President Joianne Smith said. “Oakton is focused on persistence, and I am grateful for the foundation’s commitment to our students during this time of austerity in the state.”

According to Oakton Manager of Student Financial Assistance Jamie Peterson, the foundation grant helped 141 MAP-eligible students enrolled at Oakton.

These students can expect to receive the full allocation of their MAP grant for fall and spring semesters through foundation

grants based on their continued eligibility for financial aid.

“This is an obvious need,” Oakton Educational Foundation Board President Howard Singer said. “Foundation Board members are committed to honoring the mission of Oakton, and, most importantly, the students.”

Peterson said 29 students also received an Oakton Foundation Retention Grant. The Oakton Educational Foundation said it typically makes $600,000 in student scholarships and $200,000 in grants available each year. Funds provided by the foundation in the 2016-17 academic year are said to exceed $1 million.
