Artists raise money to help domestic violence victims Niles arts project looks to raise money to help domestic violence victims

A group of artists from Niles, other Chicago suburbs and even other states spent recent months painting used purses – for a good cause.

The Purse-ue Your Dreams [sic] project was a brainchild of Niles arts and storyteller Debi Gajewski. She wanted to do an art project that would use repurposed materials and would do some good.

Since she was a member of the Niles Public Arts Culture Advisory Council, it was only natural that she went there to ask for funding. The council approved the request on May 8.

Over the next three months, the purses will be displayed at several locations throughout Niles.

And on Dec. 2, they will be auctioned off, with the proceeds going to the Women In Need Growing Stronger (WINGS), a Palatine-based organization that works to help people hurt by domestic violence rebuild their lives.

Gajewski is a professional storyteller and a storytelling coach.

She is also a painter and designer. According to her website, she took part in the Niles Chamber

of Commerce and Industry’s 2014 roses public arts project.

In it, artists were invited to paint ceramic four-foot rose sculptures, which went on display in several locations in Niles before being auctioned off. The proceeds from that auction went to NCCI’s Dollars for Scholars program, the Leaning Tower YMCA and Niles Food Pantry.

Gajewski told the Bugle that she liked the idea of using art to give old objects new life.

That’s just to show that art comes with many forms, and that you take things that are used and make them new again,” she said.

By that point, she was already thinking of selling off purses to raise money for a good cause.

WINGS, she was, was a natural fit.

“We’re doing re-purposed purses for re-purposed lives,” Gajewski said. “I like tying the art project with re-purposing; I like that [WINGS] helps women and children who are in domestic abuse. And it’s our very first major project out here.”

WINGS operates several resale shops, that sell donated clothing and other items in order to raise funds for the organization. The shops themselves can be a resource for anyone in an abusive relationship: in-store signs pro-

vide resource information. One of those shops is located in Niles at 8349 W. Golf Rd., near Golf Mill Shopping Center.

Gajewski presented the idea to the Art Council in March, then gave a more detailed presentation in April. She asked for $350 to cover the cost of purchasing the purses, the advertising and the auction itself. The Art Council approved it unanimously in May. “As an independent artist, I am thrilled that they went with my idea,” Gajewski said.

She bought a large number of gently used purses. Gajewski reached out to the artists she knew, asking them to volunteer their time. Some were from Niles and other Chicago suburbs like Mt. Prospect, but others were

from as far as Florida.

Each artist could pick the purse they wanted to paint. So long as their work was family friendly and did not infringe on any copyrights, they were free to paint whatever they wanted.

Gajewski herself painted 13 of them. Fellow Arts Council member Carol Luc contributed as well.

As the artists sent back purses, Gajewski wrote about them on her blog, www.thestoryspinners. com/blog.html showing before and after photos of the purse, as well as the artist bio and their art statement.

By Sept. 22, all of the purses were in. Starting October, they will be exhibited in several venues throughout Niles. They will be at the Niles Historical and

Cultural Center on Oct. 5-24. On Oct. 25-Nov. 20, they will be on display at the Niles-Maine Public Library.

They will be displayed at the Holly Jolly Market on Nov. 25 and return to the Niles Historical Center on Nov. 27- Dec. 1.

On Dec. 2 they go up for auction at the Niles Senior Center.

Gajewski said that she currently expected the auction to take place at 7 p.m., with a reception half an hour before that.

And the Niles Art Council has more in the pipeline; sponsoring the Niles Twinkle and Lights Holiday Decorations Contest, Dec. 9 – 10. “ It will be contest for decorating your homes for the holidays,” Gajewski explained.

Community gathers for annual garage sale Community comes together amidst heat at annual garage sale

The 12th Annual Maine Township Community Garage Sale got plenty of interested shoppers – even as unseasonably warm weather may have kept many away.

The Community Garage Sale is an annual event organized by the township government’s MaineStay Youth & Family Services. This year, it was on Sept. 23, between 9 a.m.

- 3 p.m. The proceeds are used to help fund MaineStay programs.

While the community garage sale happened in September, reservations opened up in August.

Residents of Maine Townships, be it one of the municipalities or one of the unincorporated areas, got the first shot at reserving spots between Aug. 7 and Aug. 14. After that, reservations were open to ev-

eryone else.

The garage sale took place on Maine Township Town Hall, with spaces available in the building garage, in its parking lot and on the nearby portions of Ballard Road sidewalk. The basic eight-by-sixteen-feet outdoor spaces could be reserved for $25, while the “premium” space of the same size could be reserved for $30. In both cases, residents could reserve a townshipissued table for additional $10, or bring their own furniture. The garage had four spaces that could be reserved for $75 each, with the cost of the table included.

Residents who may not have been interested in taking part in the garage sale were invited to make donations to the township directly.

Individuals and businesses could also sign on as sponsors. This year’s sponsors included Chicago Behav-

ioral Hospital, International Bank of Chicago, Journal & Topics Newspapers, Senior News 50 and Better, Suburban Resource Guide for Seniors, Summit of Uptown, Republic Services, Parkway Bank, American Classic Tours, Inc., Village Bank and Trust, State Representative Michael McAuliffe, Costco, and Law Offices of Township Supervisor Laura Morask, She donated two kids bicycles, which were raffled off at the end of the garage sale, as well as free coffee.

The proceeds from the sale benefit two MaineStay programs – the

Adventure Maine Township Summer Camp and the Maine Township Food Pantry. According to its website, the camp is open to children ages 8-13 who live in the township and meet the income requirements. Each camp session runs for two weeks. While it features activities and trips that wouldn’t be out of place in other day camps, the site notes that there is emphasis on talking to kids about “teamwork, citizenship, peer pressure, respect, responsibility, and trustworthiness.”

In an official statement, Morask

described the community garage sale as something that’s both fun and beneficial to the community.

“Our garage sale is one of our most popular events and allows kids to go to our Summer Adventure Camp,” she stated. “So for a fun day, you get to declutter your house and sell all those piled up items for which you have been waiting to do a garage sale. We take care of the hassle and also have a wonderful assortment of community vendors and sponsors.”

The unseasonably high temperatures did throw off the usual routines. The township tent was handing out water bottles. Richard Lyon, the d irector of MaineStay Youth and Family Services, said that the heat may have affected how many people showed up.

“Typically, participation goes up, but this year, because of the heat, I don’t know,” he said. “[On the other hand], I got comments from multiple people saying that they’re happy with the sale.”

At 10:19 a.m. on October 19 millions of people across the United States and around the globe will take a few minutes to practice three simple actions that could save their lives during a major earthquake.

The Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) and municipal and county emergency management agencies are encouraging Illinois residents to drop, cover, and hold on during The Great ShakeOut earthquake drill.

“Earthquakes occur without warning, so it’s important to know what to do as soon as you feel the earth shake,” said IEMA Director James K. Joseph.

“With two seismic zones in southern Illinois and residents who travel throughout the world, it’s important that everyone knows how to stay safe during an earthquake. The drill takes only a few minutes, but the lessons learned could save your life.”

The Great ShakeOut drill centers around the drop, cover, and hold on

actions: drop down to the ground, take cover under a table or other piece of heavy furniture, and then hold on until the shaking stops.

In October 2016, nearly 500,000 Illinoisans took part in the ShakeOut drill.

To date, more than 300,000 people in Illinois are registered for this year’s event.

Some of the most powerful earthquakes to ever occur in the United States happened in the winter of 181112 in the New Madrid Seismic Zone, which reaches into southwestern Illinois. That series of earthquakes lasted for several months and shaking was felt as far away as the East Coast. A similar earthquake today could cause catastrophic damage in a region that is

much more developed and populated than in the early 1800s.

Schools, businesses, government agencies, families, and others can register to participate in the drill at www. shakeout.org/centralus.

Registered participants will receive additional information about the drill and earthquake preparedness.

While the international drill will take place on October 19 individual drills can be conducted anytime within two weeks of that date.

Notre Dame comes close to second-straight shut out; Gavin continues turning heads

On an afternoon where the water boys were the most important people in the stadium, the Dons’ defense didn’t spend much time on the sizzling turf at Triton College, the home field for St. Patrick.

Notre Dame nearly delivered its second straight shutout, forced four turnovers and held the home-standing Shamrocks to just 21 total yards and one first down in the first half.

That dominating effort on a 95-degree day was more than enough to push the Dons to their fourth win in five starts. Notre Dame led 17-0 after the first play of the second quarter and slogged their way to a 25-7 win.

“I was very happy with our defense,” Notre Dame coach Mike Hennessey said. “Defensively, we got to the ball and really did a good job in the first half.”

opening series, capped by a wonderful 34-yard run by Ty Gavin that was all second effort.

The first of his three touchdowns initially was stopped at the line of scrimmage, but he kept his legs pumping, slipped through the line, and bolted the rest of the way for the score.

The Dons’ defense dominated from there. With Massimo Taibi, Liam Malone and Zaid Kahn across the defensive front backed

Former Don Cravens earns CCIW honor North Central College senior Pat Cravens has been named one of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Football Players of the Week for the week of Sept. 23. The CCIW announced this week’s honorees on Monday.

Cravens, the senior from Notre Dame College Prep, was recognized as the CCIW’s Defensive Player of the Week on the strength of his performance in the Cardinals’ 51-21 CCIW victory at Millikin University on Saturday.

Cravens recorded a team-high 12 tackles, one short of a career high, and recorded one of North Central’s two interceptions as North Central improved to a perfect 3-0 on the season and 2-0 in CCIW play.

The Cardinals’ third-leading tackler (18) thus far this season, Cravens also ranks first in the CCIW and sixth nationally among NCAA Division III players in puntreturn average (21.4 yards per return). North Central has claimed the Defensive Player of the Week award the past two weeks, as linebacker Tommy Sora was so honored following last week’s 2613 victory over Illinois Wesleyan University.

The Cardinals have claimed one of the CCIW’s weekly awards in both games they have played thus far this season. Senior running back Austin Breunig was selected as the Offensive Player of the Week following North Central’s season-opening victory over Robert Morris University-Chicago.

through the second quarter was downed inside the St. Patrick 1, and on the next play, Kahn and Carden led the charge that forced a safety and put Notre Dame up 19-0.

The Dons were efficient most of the afternoon, grinding out 309 yards on the ground and using six different backs to keep them as fresh as possible under

the stifling heat. Regardless of the weather, the Dons will live and die as a running team. “We saw what we had over the summer,” Hennessey said. “We have three or four kids who can really tote the ball. We seem to have an abundance of running backs and linebackers.”

That group is led by Gavin, who capped his 192-yard day with a

47-yard sweep in the fourth quarter off a direct snap. That came just 17 seconds after the Shamrocks had snapped the Dons’ seven-quarter scoreless streak with an 8-yard run from George Ohanessian.

Calder and Jake Martin also had interceptions for the Dons, and Culen had a fumble recovery early in the third quarter. For the

game, Notre Dame yielded just 189 yards to total offense, and 94 of those came on three plays.

At 4-1, Notre Dame is just one win away from being playoff eligible. The combined record of the Dons’ final four opponents is 5-15 with a pair of winless teams on the schedule the next two weeks in Carmel and Chicago Heights Marian.

Help parents two ways: with loan, lesson DEAR DAVE, I graduated from college two years ago, and I have a good job making $60,000. I have about $10,000 in student loan debt, but my mom and dad have a real issue with their roof. It’s leaking in places to the point they have to set buckets around to catch the water, and I’ve gotten repair estimates of $3,000 to $5,000. They’re good, hard-working, blue collar folks, but they’re less fortunate financially and have more debt than I do.

What should I do first — help them fix the roof or pay off my student loan debt?

JORDAN DEAR JORDAN, You’ve got a great spirit, man. If I woke up in your shoes, I’d probably help them fix the roof first. The only way I would do that, though, is if they agree to let you help them address the reasons they don’t have any money. If you have the cash, go ahead and pay for the roof. But let them know they must pay you

back by getting some financial counseling.

I know you love your mom and dad, and they work too hard to be broke. We’re not talking about you shaming or condemning them in any way. Talk to them in a loving, caring way, but you have to address the situation. If they’ve worked all their lives and can’t come up with $3,000, something’s wrong. The fact they don’t have any money is the symptom. The problem is they’ve mishandled the dollars they earned. Even if you don’t make a lot, you can have cash set

aside for emergencies if you manage it well.

You’re a young guy making good money, so there’s no reason you can’t do both things quickly. Help your folks with the roof, then turn around and knock out that student loan debt. It won’t be a huge burden to you. But remember, you fixing their lives without them fixing their lives will be a burden — to all of you!

Assessor hosting property tax appeal workshop Oct. 2 Workshop will be at 6:30 p.m. at the American Legion Memorial Civic Center in Morton Grove Cook County Assessor Joseph Berrios announced his office will host an Assessment Appeal Workshop in cooperation with Cook County Commissioner Larry Suffredin and Niles Township Assessor Scott Bagnell in order to help homeowners understand and appeal their properties’ assessment values.

The workshop will be held on Monday, October 2 at 6:30 p.m. at the American Legion Memorial Civic Center located at 6140 Dempster Street in Morton Grove.

Representatives from the Cook County Assessor’s Office (CCAO) will be present to answer questions and assist homeowners in filing assessment appeals.

Taxpayers are encouraged to bring their 2016 reassessment notices, if available; assessment information will also be distributed

by Assessor Berrios’s Office to attendees.

“Our outreach workshops are designed to provide homeowners with personal and local access to information regarding their assessments,” Assessor Berrios said.

“We want to ensure that taxpayers are provided with all the tools necessary to not only understand their assessments but also appeal them if they choose to do so.”

Property in Cook County is reassessed every three years.

The three assessment districts consist of the City of Chicago, North and Northwest Suburban Cook County and South and Southwest Suburban Cook County.

Although CCAO is reassessing properties in South and Southwest Suburban Cook County this year, all taxpayers have a right to appeal

their assessments each year during their townships’ 30-day appeal filing periods. (Please Note: Taxpayers do not receive assessment notices during non-reassessment years.)

The deadline for Tax Year 2017 appeals for Niles Township is October 12.

Any changes as a result of an appeal for Tax Year 2017 will be reflected on Second-Installment Tax Bills to be mailed and due in summer 2018.

The time to file appeals on these proposed assessments is now, however, when Niles Township is open for appeals.

The CCAO web site has a wealth of information on property assessments and appeals. In addition to being able to obtain filing dates and download and file appeal forms, residential property owners may also utilize the site to search for comparable property assessment information to include in their appeals. New property tax law increases savings for homeowners, seniors ‘This new law helps all homeowners, especially senior citizens’ The Cook County Assessor’s Office is implementing expanded exemption eligibility and savings to help more homeowners save money on property taxes. These changes resulted after Senate Bill 473 (Public Act 1000401) was recently signed into law. Assessor Joseph Berrios conceived and crafted the legislation.

The bill, sponsored by Senator Antonio Munoz (D-Chicago) and Representative Robert Martwick (D-Chicago), received bipartisan support and was designed to increase tax-saving exemption amounts for homeowners, including seniors. It also expands eligibility for the Senior Freeze Exemption.

“This new law helps all homeowners, especially senior citizens,” Assessor Berrios said.

“We sought to have this legislation proposed and we thank everyone who helped make that happen. Specifically, our sincere appreciation goes to

Senator Munoz, Representative Martwick and all co-sponsors.

It was gratifying to see it pass both chambers of the General Assembly and even more so to now see it is law.”

The Cook County Assessor’s Office (CCAO) administers numerous exemptions that are subtracted from a home’s Equalized Assessed Value (EAV ), resulting in deductions from the dollar amount of a tax bill. The new law increases exemption savings for the Homeowner and Senior Citizen Exemptions. Its enhancement and expansion of eligibility for the Senior Freeze Exemption does more to continue helping to keep low-income seniors from being taxed out of their homes.

The Homeowner Exemption, available to eligible taxpayers/ residents of any age on their primary home, increases from $7,000 to $10,000 in EAV. The Senior Exemption, for taxpayers/residents 65 years or older, regardless of income, increases from $5,000 to $8,000 in EAV. It is important to note that the exemption amount is not the dollar amount by which a tax bill is lowered. EAV is the partial value of a property to which tax rates are applied; it is this figure on

which a tax bill is calculated.

The Assessor does not set tax rates.

In addition, the Senior Freeze Exemption for low-income seniors expands eligibility by increasing allowable total household income to $65,000, from the previous limit of $55,000.

There is also a new minimum $2,000 EAV deduction for the Senior Freeze, which will help offset increases in assessed value.

“We conceived this legislation in response to the many taxpayers who have attended our community outreaches throughout the county and those who have visited our offices. They expressed the need for greater property tax relief,” Berrios said. “The new law provides additional exemption savings and helps all taxpayers, especially Cook County seniors, many on fixed incomes, remain in their homes.”

All exemptions and corresponding savings appear on each year’s Second-Installment Tax Bills.
