Seniors lend helping hands at D.64 schools Seniors had an opportunity to try out Google Expeditions through mobile devices

D64 Senior Tax Exchange Program members gathered recently for their 2018-19 kick-off orientation on site at Franklin School’s Learning ResD.64ce Center.

Superintendent Laurie Heinz and other administrators updated D.64 seniors on the many facility improvements completed over the summer across D64 as well as the learning and curriculum focus areas for the year ahead.

At the meeting, seniors had

an opportunity to try out Google Expeditions through mobile devices that D64 students use to go on virtual field trips to places like the coral reefs or the International Space Station.

D.64 seniors work at the direction of certified staff members to help students with their learning or to support other needs at the schools. Read more about the unique D64 program here and consider applying to join D.64 senior group.

Chicagoland teen takes ‘Miss Teen Illinois’ crown Bolingbrook resident captures Ms. Illinois Teen crown

A’Maiya Allen is a woman of many talents, including playing the clarinet, saxophone, writing, an advocate against bullying, and oh that’s right, winning the Miss Illinois Teen USA pageant.

Allen was crowned over Labor Day weekend in Bloomington, IL on the campus of Illinois State University.

Eighteen-year-old Allen who competed in her first competition at the age of 10, knew that being on stage is where she wanted to be.

“I can honestly say that I was not always in support of pageants,” said Sharon Allen, A’Maiyas mom. “However, when A’Maiya started showing an interest in pageants at a young age and I saw how she began to transform from a shy little girl to a more confident young lady who enjoyed being on stage I was definitely for it.”

out of 36 overall pageant contestants in the competition, is also the second African-American ever to win the award next

ter finishing in the top 15 last year, A’Maiya said she wasn’t as nervous as she would normally be because of her diligent work ethic she put in to capture the title this year.

“I usually get nervous with butterflies for all my competitions,” A’Maiya said. “This time around I felt more prepared though, because I trained at a higher level than I ever have before.”

With the different components of the pageant, A’Maiya said that her father, David, was very instrumental on helping her be victorious.

“Both of my parents are an awesome support system, and they are both my cheerleaders,” A’Maiya said. “My dad though is actually the one who coaches me, gets my wardrobes ready and practices interview questions with me.”

With a total of 36 competitors trying to win, A’Maiya knew she had to be at the top of her game.

“There’s a few different competitions we have to compete in,” A’Maiya said. “There’s the interview portion where we have two or three minutes to answer a question from each judge, a fitness portion and evening gown. If a contestant advances, to the top five, she has onstage questions so the judges get a better sense of her person-

ality.

Even though A’Maiya said every section had its fair share of challenges, the fitness portion took the most work.

“I would go to the gym sometimes twice a day with my personal trainer,” A’Maiya said. “[The judges] were looking at overall fitness, so I wanted to make sure that I presented myself well as a fit and healthy teenager.”

The teen who is currently at Howard University in Washington D.C and majoring in broadcast journalism, had to be away from her dad, for a month in order to attend classes.

David said that although it wasn’t ideal to be away for the purposes of the pageant, A’Maiya stayed on top — focusing on school and doing all she could to prepare for the threeday event in Bloomington.

“We would Skype for about a month when A’Maiya was away at college,” David said. “It was kind off difficult at first, but we got through it as a family and we were just so overjoyed when we found out she captured the title.”

Now that A’Maiya has accomplished one of her main goals, she says that she will be setting her sights on capturing the Miss Teen USA title in the summer of 2019.

Man charged with promoting prostitution Man Charged with Promoting Prostitution following Sheriff’s Police, Homeland Security Investigation An investigation by the Cook County Sheriff’s Police Vice Unit and U.S. Department of Homeland Security led to the arrest of

a 36-year-old man for promoting prostitution at his Chicago apartment, Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced today.

On Sept. 18, Sheriff’s Police and Homeland Security Investigations executed a search warrant at an apartment in the 3200 block of West Lawrence Avenue after receiving information about prostitution occurring at that location.

While executing the search warrant, investigators recovered one victim, a 34-year-old woman.

Foxx takes action to vacate drug convictions tied to corrupt former Chicago police sergeant ‘In these cases we found a pattern of misconduct by Watts and other officers’ Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx Sept. 24 announced that her office moved to vacate the convictions of 18 individuals whose narcotics arrests and subsequent convictions were based on the misconduct of corrupt former Chicago Police Sergeant Ronald Watts and other officers working under his command.

“As the result of an ongoing review by prosecutors in the Conviction Integrity Unit, Sept. 24 we asked the Court to vacate these convictions in the interest of justice,” said Foxx. “In these cases we found a pattern of misconduct by Watts and other officers, which strongly impacts our confidence in the initial arrests and validity of these convictions.”

Sept. 24 in court, prosecutors formally presented the motions to Cook County Judge Leroy K. Martin, Jr. during a hearing at the Leighton Criminal Courts Building in Chicago, who granted the motions and vacated the convictions.

This marks the second time that the Foxx administration has initiated court action regarding cases involving Watts.

In November 2017, the State’s Attorney’s Office filed similar motions to vacate the convictions of 15 individuals based on concerns regarding allegations of misconduct of the arresting officers, including Watts.

Since Foxx has taken office, the SAO Conviction Integrity Unit, responsible for investigating and addressing claims of wrongful conviction, has vacated criminal convictions for nearly 50 people, including 42 cases involving Watts.

Developer Buys Prairie View Plaza New owners are experienced developers Prairie View Plaza (Dempster & Waukegan) has been sold.

The new owners are experienced developers who have pledged to work with the Village to completely redevelop this important Village hub.

She was provided victim services through the Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators learned that Gabriel Alvarado-Aguilar, who lived at the apartment, arranged “dates” at the location and received profits from the victim’s acts of prostitution. He was taken into custody at the location on Sept. 18.

Alvarado-Aguilar was charged on Sept. 19 with promoting prostitution. His bond was set at $10,000-D today at the George N. Leighton Criminal Court Building.

The public is reminded that the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty by the government in a court of law.

Lincoln turns tide in debates against Douglas in Galesburg

BY OWEN W. MUELDER FOR THE REGISTER-MAIL OF GALESBURG The Lincoln-Douglas Debates are among the most important events in the United State’s history.

The seven debates were conducted throughout Illinois in the summer and fall of 1858. Not only significant in their own time, the debates have since been recognized as an ultimate example of our political process which has continued throughout the centuries as most office seekers nationwide debate each other every campaign season.

Stephen A. Douglas and Abraham Lincoln were respectively the Democratic and Republican party candidates for the U.S. Senate. The primary question these men discussed was whether slavery should be extended into the nation’s territories.

Lincoln was not an abolitionist, but he loathed slavery and looked forward to a time when it would disappear. He also maintained that it should be forbidden from being established in new states that desired to join the Union. Douglas defended the concept of “Popular Sovereignty,” whereby the people who resided in western territories should have the right to decide if slavery would be allowed.

The slavery question was so important then that no other political issue was raised by either candidate during the debates.

Public oratory was popular in the 19th century; both candidates often used harsh language and outspoken mud-slinging to characterize each other. People attending these contests also shouted out derogatory comments and catcalls toward both men. Spectators came from every part of Illinois to hear the speakers and newspapers throughout the country published detailed accounts.

The first debate, in Ottawa, was held on a blisteringly hot day in the third week of August. Most historians agree Douglas put Lincoln on the de-

fensive; consequently, the “Little Giant” appeared to be the winner.

However, at the second contest in Freeport, Douglas was put on the defensive. Lincoln asked Douglas how he could reconcile his “Popular Sovereignty” stance with the Supreme Court’s Dred Scott decision, which ruled that slaveholders had the right to introduce slavery into the territories. If Douglas responded that he supported the Dred Scott decision he would please Southerners, but if he stood by his “Popular Sovereignty” position, most Southerners would never forgive him.

His reply that day has since been dubbed the “Freeport Doctrine.”

Douglas responded to Lincoln’s query by saying the people who settled a territory would determine whether or not slavery could exist there. Put back on his heels, he hoped his answer would satisfy all parties, but it failed.

The third debate, in mid-September in downstate Jonesboro, was poorly attended. In southern Illinois, slavery was popular with many citizens. Lincoln finally came out more forcefully in Jonesboro, but he faced a hostile crowd and was characterized by Douglas as a radical. This debate is considered by most scholars a somewhat inglorious affair. The fourth debate, in Charleston, was on neutral ground for both men and is remembered as a stalemate.

On a chilly day at Knox College’s Old Main in Galesburg, the fifth debate on Oct. 7 drew more spectators than any of the other six contests.

Lincoln scholars are nearly unanimous in describing this debate as the one where Lincoln found his legs, displaying a confidence he had not shown before.

Lincoln knew Galesburg was an abolitionist town, known for harboring fugitives on the Underground Railroad. Standing erect and selfassured on a stage above the crowd, Lincoln spoke for the first time at length about the immorality of slavery.

“I confess myself as belonging to that class in the country that contemplates slavery as a moral, social and political evil,” he said. Paraphrasing Henry Clay, he accused Douglas of “blowing out the moral lights around us.”

Lincoln biographer Benjamin Thomas described the Galesburg contest as the turning point for Lincoln. One Boston newspaper reporter described Lincoln as “eloquent and bold.” Lincoln was so successful emphasizing this moral theme in Galesburg that he repeated it at the sixth debate in Quincy.

Douglas, often a heavy drinker, was described as “tight”and spoke slowly, hammering home his contention that decisions about slavery should be left to local and state governments. In the final debate, at Alton, which was a rehashing of the previous points, Douglas, his voice fraying, seemed worn down. An energetic Lincoln said the Declaration of Independence applied to all men, not just some, and the slavery question was between right and wrong.

In November, the state Legislature re-elected Douglas by 54 to 46, but the debates catapulted Lincoln’s name and reputation across the nation; the Republican Party nominated him for the presidency two years later. His election victory proved to be a significant watershed in American history.

Maine South defeats Evanston to open defense of its CSL title; looking for 18th straight

In 1974, the super rock group, Bachman, Turner, Overdrive had their second gold record with the raucous, “Takin Care of Business”.

For 17 years, the Hawks of Maine South, under their legendary head coach, Dave Inserra have been takin’ care of business in the Central Suburban Conference South Division with 17 consecutive CSL South championships and an 84-1 record in those 17 championship seasons.

On Friday night at Murney Lazier Stadium on the campus of the undefeated Wildkits of Evanston High School, the 17-time defending CSL South champions opened up their 2018 CSL South season.

With 11:37 left in the contest, the Wildkits (AP Class 8A No.6) had just scored on a four-yard-run from junior Quadre Nicholson (17 carries, 69 yards, TD), but the Wildkit extra point attempt hit the crossbar and Maine South clung, to a 14-13 lead.

Final — Maine South 21 Evanston 13 Wolf would rush for 52 of the yards on the Hawks’ 9-play, 81yard, game-winning drive. Led by junior left tackle, 6-foot-4, 277 pound Pete Skoronski; Sean Kelly, Alex Pavlov, Nick Karnezis and the rest of the Hawk offensive line that paved the way for Wolf to the end zone.

‘The Sinner’ star Carrie Coon talks about playing the villain

We know whodunit — the question is, whydunit?

That’s a formula “The Sinner” has crafted to tremendous success. The first season of USA’s limited series scored with viewers, and landed Jessica Biel an Emmy nomination for her starring role.

In Season 2, Carrie Coon stepped into the spotlight as the enigmatic Vera, a woman who leads a cult-like community and the mother of a boy who has committed two heinous murders.

Everything isn’t what it seems, Coon promises. “[Showrunner] Derek Simonds has all these twists up his very well-tailored sleeves,” she reveals.

The day after shooting wrapped, Coon — a new mother herself — talked with Variety about why she’s drawn to mysterious characters, her biggest fear, and why she thinks cults hold so much appeal for people.

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO SIGN ON FOR THE ROLE? I was just postpartum when [my husband] Tracy [Letts] got the call to play Jack, and it was probably about a week or two weeks later that I got the call to play Vera. Tracy had already decided to say yes because he’s worked with [executive producer] Antonio Campos before and he was very impressed by Derek’s presentation when they had a phone call about the show. And we really loved Season 1. We just thought it was really smart and some of the character work and the choices that weren’t necessarily plot-driven. And the idea that it was a whydunnit, it was a bit of a twist on the genre. So I said, what the heck, we’re all going to go to New York together! I thought it was I going to come to New York and hang out with my baby and see all of our friends.

And as it turns out, I worked 14hour days. Not the summer I was expecting.

WHAT DID IT MEAN TO YOU TO BE ON THE SAME PROJECT WITH YOUR HUSBAND? It’s funny that it’s become this pitch tool for people when they come to us. They’re like, “...and Tracy will play the uncle and Carrie could play the lunch lady.” I

I think the people who want to work with us try to seduce us by offering our partner a part which I guess is a benefit of having our careers dovetailing in this unusual way where my husband has this film career in his 50s and I’m having this career in my 30s and we just happened to be married. We’re very, very lucky.

I wish I could work with him, actually work with him, right? Because I think he’s so tremendous.

I guess I’ll have to settle for our work in the theater because even in “The Post,” we just walked by each other in a room.

HOW MUCH DID YOU KNOW ABOUT VERA GOING INTO IT? DID DEREK LAY OUT THE WHOLE ARC OF THE SEASON FOR YOU? They hadn’t, quite. Derek had not quite solved the ending, but they had the rough arc of the way Vera and Ambrose [Bill Pullman] would ultimately interact.

And what was fascinating about it is Vera is not just purely the antagonist. She’s the protagonist as well. In some ways she’s

the victim of the circumstances.

Her son [Julian, played by Elisha Henig] has committed this crime and now she has to deal with these bureaucratic machines that she’s been operating outside of for a long time. She needs an ally and Ambrose is her ally, but he’s also connected to the very institutions that are threatening her. It’s an odd position to be in because it’s not as though Vera is the evil villain, though I think some people believe that she is.

I don’t think of her that way. She shares some qualities with Nora [from “The Leftovers”], so I knew I was going to have to find a way to play similar energy and find a new way of playing it because nobody wants to see you make all the same faces. I always live in horror of the Carrie Coon montage where they just cut together my scared face and I’m exposed as a hack and nobody hires you ever again. That’s my nightmare.

I’ll just find something else to do.

[Laughs.]

BUT YOU DO HAVE A KNACK FOR PLAYING THESE AMBIGUOUS CHARACTERS.

Most of all, I’m not afraid of ambiguity and I don’t care about being liked. A real human being is more complicated than that. I have love/hate relationships with most of the people in my life. Any family member you have, you have a love/hate relationship with them. I feel that good characters, if they’re written well and they’re full human beings, they’ll be that way too. And people are not so solvable. I find people very mysterious and their motivations for things, particularly right now, are very mysterious. It’s interesting because we live in a culture where everything is very polarized and everything feels very black and white. “The Sinner” very satisfyingly dabbles in the gray areas in a way that I find reflects real life even though it’s also a thrilling whydunit with some sensational twists.

SO WHAT DO YOU THINK MOTIVATES VERA? WHAT’S HER GUIDING PRINCIPLE? I think she’s a highly principled leader who believes that she’s offering the world a type of psychological work that creates in-

tegrated human beings and she believes that’s the future of humanity, but in fact reducing human actions to binary good and bad, right and wrong is not helpful. Ultimately, it’s reductive and it doesn’t allow us to live fully inside of this spectrum of what humans are capable of. It puts us on this teeter totter, on the scale of good and bad, right and wrong, and that those are actually values that are determined by society, by our agreed upon rules in society, but humans are ultimately animals and capable of a wide spectrum of behavior. And maybe the challenging part about being human is that we decide what’s good and bad and if we were to let go of that, what would we be?

Who could we be if we weren’t living in a binary structure? I think she believes that what she’s doing is powerful and could really change the world for the better.

She just has her own weaknesses, her own flaws.

So while she sees the value of the system she’s perpetuating, she doesn’t necessarily operate perfectly within it.

“After they had tied the game at seven, we really need something to happen for us to change the momentum,” Wolf said.

Three and a half minutes after the Wildkits had tied the game Wolf untied the game. Intercepting a Tarpey pass from his linebacker position at the Evanston 37, Wolf broke at least six tackles on his way to the end zone. After Carolan’s extra point the Hawks led 14-7 with 6:47 left in the third quarter.

With 1:12 left, the Wildkits’ last hope on fourth down was crushed by a Eoin Hopkins sack of Tarpey at the Evanston 34.

Tarpey would complete 22 of his 39 passes for 262 yards and a touchdown. Gerrard Lamour hauled in six Tarpey passes for 90 yards.

“We just stayed the course and followed what our coaches had taught us all week,” Kilburg said.

“I do my best to help guide our defensive backfield. Danny Wolf is a beast.”

Hawk quarterback Cole Dow would complete eight of his 18 passes for 94 yards. Lazic had seven catches for 76 yards.

“The pick-six, was huge,” Wolf said. “The offensive line was great on the big drive. We wanted to put on a show tonight and we did.”

“Evanston is a great team. A lot of weapons on offense,” Inserra said. “We did a good job of keeping them under control. I thought our conditioning and work ethic, was a very important reason, for our victory. We had the big drive that gave us the 21-13 lead but we also had a pair of drives, that didn’t result in points but took valuable minutes off the clock.”

South is 1-0 in pursuit of CSL South Championship No.18 and still ‘Takin Care of Business.’
