A Story to Tell Morton Grove Library, Historical Society launch oral history project

The Morton Grove Public Library and the Morton Grove Historical Society want to hear your story – literally.

In August, the two organizations teamed up to launch the “My Morton Grove” oral history project.

Taking cues from the nationwide oral history project StoryCorps and similar programs they’ve done in the past, the library and historical society are looking to collect stories, old photos and videos from as many Morton Grove residents as possible.

Ultimately, the two organizations hope to create a record of resident experiences from the village’s diverse population; that record would be accessible to anyone in the future.

My Morton Grove was the brainchild of adult librarian Chad Comello. Both the library and museum have done oral history projects in the past, and Comello said wanted to do something similar.

“My supervisor Natalya [Fishman] told me of the oral histories the library had conducted in the 1980s, which are currently still on cassette tapes and have typewritten

transcripts, and mentioned the Veterans Voices project the museum had done,” he explained. “I wanted to reignite those projects, but blend them into a new collaboration that would seek out stories beyond those of veterans and senior citizens, who are understandably the most common participants of oral histories.”

Comello and Fishman approached Mark Matz, the historical society’s director, and Melissa D’Lando, curator of the Morton Grove Historical Museum.

During their discussion, the group came up with the idea to use StoryCorps as a model. The non-profit organization provides equipment to participants for two people to interview each other.

is then archived at the Library of Congress. “StoryCorps has shown that interesting stories can be found everywhere, in many types of people, and that sometimes just sitting people down with a microphone in between them is a good way to capture them,” Comello said.

The two organizations launched My Morton Grove in August.

Comello said the project is still in its early stages, and they plan to actively promote it over the next few months through the library’s newsletter and the Morton Grove Park District’s newsletter. And, My Morton Grove already has a website ( w w w. m g p l . o rg / m y- m o r t o n grove) set up, where residents who are interested in participating in the project can access an online signup form. Interested residents

can also contact Comello directly at ccomello@mgpl.org or 847-9295108. Residents who do not wish to have their interviews recorded can also submit written accounts.

“It will be an ongoing project, with the goal being to collect stories from all kinds of Morton Grove residents: adults and kids, immigrants and long-time residents, business owners, veterans, and anyone else with an interesting story about living in Morton Grove,” Comell said.

Another goal of the project is to compile stories from members of all ethnic groups that live in the village.

When asked how they would reach out to residents who may not speak or read English, Comell said the project will rely on the help of other residents to spread the word.

“Without those language skills ourselves, this is where residents can make a huge difference in making My Morton Grove succeed, “ he said. “First, think of people you know who you think should be interviewed and would be interested in doing so, then help us get in touch with them.

Second, if you speak another language other than English, you could help facilitate interviews, either in conducting them or helping to translate.

“Since our outreach efforts have only just begun, we don’t yet have the capacity to solicit contributions from different languages and cultures, but we still want them.”

As interviews, written accounts and other materials start coming in, My Morton Grove plans to make the stories publicly available.

Comell said the plan is to put the interviews on its Tumblr page (http://mymortongrove.tumblr. com), and the project will look to share them on additional platforms as the project collects more materials.

“As the project grows, we’ll evaluate if that works or if there’s a better way to store and share the material,” Comell said. “But for now, that page will be the primary portal for access, with our server and external hard drives providing backups for the material.”

He emphasized that, ultimately, he hopes that the project will truly represent all facets of village life.

“Morton Grove is such a fascinating, diverse community,” Comell said. “It’s why we’re starting My Morton Grove—to try to capture the rich tapestry of cultural history all around us. But, we at the library and museum can only do so much to find people whose stories are worth hearing, so we’d love to hear tips and ideas from the community.”

Village Board approves new music lounge Music Box owners say venue will appeal to older patrons

The village of Niles Board of Trustees approved a special use permit for the construction of a music venue, despite protests from nearby property owners.

Lucina Janikowski, owner of the

Village Motel, opposed the new venue from the beginning, insisting that the building, which used to house Capone’s Hideout bar, isn’t suited for an entertainment venue.

While the application went through the Niles Plan Commission, Janikowski and his wife, Mary, said they had bad experiences with Capone’s customers, and they were worried that the Music Box would

be more of the same.

Music Box owner Andrew Bobrowski has said his business would look to attract an older crowd, which he feels would not be as disruptive as Capone’s younger clientele. Gregory Czaykowski, who will serve as the Music Box’s manager, told reporters that they were serious about making sure patrons will not be disruptive.

But, the Janikowskis told reporters that they felt Bobrowski and others weren’t being entirely truthful and added that the restrictions put in place to prevent any disruptive behavior weren’t enough.

As previously reported by the Bugle, the Niles Plan Commission voted 3-2 to recommend that the village board approve the Music Box’s application – with conditions.

The outdoor deck must close after midnight, there must be a plan for

overflow parking, a fence must be constructed between the lot and the Village Motel, and there must be an on-site manager to keep an eye on what’s going on in the parking lot. If any conditions are violated, the permit would be pulled.

The Park Ridge City Council gave staff a go-ahead to prepare ordinances that could change several aspects of the way meetings are conducted.

During the Aug. 22 procedures and regulations committee of the whole meeting, City Attorney Adam Simon presented a memorandum suggesting several ways the city could speed up meetings and the city council’s decision-making process.

The memo was prepared at the request of Sixth Ward Ald. Marc Mazzuca, who chairs the procedures and regulations committee.

The memo offers a number of suggestions. Most notably, it suggests counting a committee vote as the first of the required two readings, doing away with topicbased committee of the whole meetings and adding stricter time limits on public comment periods.

Other notable suggestions include ways to streamline the zoning amendment process and making the meetings of zoningrelated boards and committees more efficient.

The memo was prepared by Simon and fellow city attorney Julie Tappendorf.

In it, they note that, in most

cases, the city council tends to hold two readings, with a second reading counting as a final vote on most issues that come before it.

But, there is no rule actually requiring thar procedure.

The city council has waived the self-imposed requirement before, the memo said, and it’s currently not clear when it can do it.

The memo also noted that most ordinances go through two committee meetings – one for discussion and one for the actual vote – and at least two city council meetings.

“The practice means that an ordinance may take three or more months before it is finally acted on by the council,” the memo stated.

To address this, the attorneys suggested counting the committee vote as the first reading and the council vote as a second reading.

If aldermen felt the items deserved more discussion, it would be voted upon individually. If not, it would be part of the consent agenda.

“In the best case, this can accelerate the time for final action by 50 percent or more,” the memo stated.

The attorneys also looked at the way aldermen handle committee of the whole meetings.

and policies and procedures COW on the fourth Monday of each month.

The problem, the memo argued, is that when a committee decides to defer a vote on an issue, it gets deferred to the next meeting of that particular commission rather than the next committee of the whole meeting.

So instead of waiting two weeks, the aldermen must wait at least a month before returning to the issue.

To address this, the attorneys proposed doing away with

distinctions between COWs, and simply using committee meetings to discuss any topic. If aldermen wanted to keep the current structure, the council proposed adding a standing item to all COW agendas that would allow aldermen to discuss items that did not fit a particular committee.

Another major proposal involved the way the city amends its zoning laws. Under the current procedure, if the city wants to change them, it has to go through a rules and procedures COW. The city council then must vote on whether to have the Park Ridge Planning and Zoning Commission hold a hearing.

The attorneys argued that this needlessly slowed down the process, and recommended holding the hearing at some earlier point.

The final major change would deal with public comments during the council meetings. The attorneys noted that the 5-minute time limit on individual comments isn’t always enforced.

They recommended reducing the time limit, or, failing that, enforcing the existing time limit consistently.

They also recommended putting a time limit on all comments, giving each speaker only one opportunity to speak on each agenda item and adding rules that would explicitly prohibit “disruptive, threatening and inflammatory behavior.”

And, in situations where several members of a single group come to the meeting to speak on the same issue, they recommended that the council “encourage groups

to nominate a representative speaker,” rather than duplicating individual comments.

After Simon finished summarizing the contents of the memo, the public was given an opportunity to comment.

Resident Pat Livensparger said she didn’t believe the changes to the way public comments work were necessary.

“Usually, that’s not a problem to delay your effectiveness,” she said.

“Most of the time, there’s nobody there. People only show up when they have something important to say, and you should listen.”

Acting Mayor Marty Maloney said he knew he personally didn’t always enforce the time limits.

While he said he didn’t want to restrict residents’ ability to comment, he felt some suggestions made sense.

“There are times when people say the same thing again and again, and it does stop discussion,” he said.

Mazzuca felt that the public comments policy should be left to the discretion of each legislative body’s chairperson.

As far as distinctions between COWs, he agreed with First Ward Ald. Dan Moran, who noted that aldermen already consider more time-sensitive ordinances at the earliest COW possible.

Mazzuca instructed staff to put something together for future committee consideration.

“What I’d like to do is place all of those [recommendations], in some form or another, for future discussion,” he said.

Niles Library seeks president ... for a day Library will give one school student the chance to be board president for a day

The Niles Public Library will give one lucky elementary school student the chance to be library board president for a day.

While the winner of the President for a Day contest won’t actually get

to run a library board meeting, the honor will come with several perks.

The winning student will be officially recognized at the Nov. 16 Niles Library Board meeting and receive a ceremonial Key to the Library. She or he will be able to put together their own display of library materials and choose what family movie will be shown on the library’s

big screen.

The winner will also be able to reserve seats at any Second Sunday Special event they wish to attend.

Sasha Vasilic, the library’s public relations and marketing supervisor, told the Bugle that the contest was just one of the things the library was doing to boost community involvement and encourage more people to obtain library cards.

The contest is open to all students in grades K-8 who have a Niles Public Library card. If they don’t

have a library card, students can still enter the contest if they attend a school in a district that’s at least partially within the library district.

Vasilic said that boundary includes all schools in East Maine District 63.

Students who want to enter would need to fill out an application form, which they can pick up at the KidSpace desk or download at www. nileslibrary.org/kids. They will also need to write a 5-10 sentence essay on why they would want to be a

library president. The applications and the essays will be evaluated by a “small committee.”

Vasilic said each essay will be judged by the standards of their grade level.

The contest began accepting entries Sept. 1, and students will be able to apply through Oct. 23.

The winner will be announced on Election Day, Nov. 8. And, Vasilic said the contest may become an annual event. “We’ll see if it becomes successful,” he said.

This coming Sept. 5, we’ll celebrate Labor Day. This is a time where summer nears its end and the fall season is about to begin. Many have traveled far or near with family and friends.

A new travel agency specializing in escorted travel adventures for young adults with special needs is making a big impact on our community.

Take, for example, my friend Kari Winter of Downers Grove. This past June 20 - 24, she participated in a weeklong escorted travel adventure with Atypical Travel. This is a new travel agency that was founded by Peggy Koutas. Peggy created this organization to help others, like Kari, have an opportunity to travel with their peers who have similar special needs, or “diverse-abilities” as Peggy says.

Prior to beginning Atypical Travel, Peggy was a Special Education teacher at Elmhurst College’s ELSA program.

The ELSA program is Elmhurst College’s educational program for young adults with developmental

disabilities. It was here where Kari first met Peggy.

Having been in the disabilities field for more than 35 years, Peggy was looking to take her teaching experience outside of the classroom to create travel adventures for her students with “diverse-abilities.”

The idea to start Atypical Travel came about as she was “frustrated as a teacher to see all activities in school and my students were always excluded,” said Peggy.

After taking about a year to develop the details of embarking on her own travel business, Peggy was ready to embark on her first adventure with her group of special travelers.

Fast forward to today, Kari Winter stayed in touch with her teacher, Peggy. Today, Kari is a traveler with Peggy’s Atypical Travel agency. This past summer, Kari and a small group of others with special needs took off on an adventure to Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri.

“On that trip I went on I saw

something called the Bridal Cave and took a tour of it,” said Kari. “The tour guide told us a legend story that went with it.”

Atypical Travel is unlike any other escorted travel company. The group of travelers stays as a family. They rent luxury vacation homes, which give the travelers the opportunity for independence.

Atypical Travel “gave me an opportunity to travel independently,” said Kari. Travelers like Kari have had an overwhelmingly positive experience filled with many memories. Parents have seen an improved level of independence of their adult child with special needs.

This autumn season, Peggy and Atypical Travel have plans to embark for the Florida Keys in October 2016 and internationally to Costa Rica in November 2016.

Next year in 2017, the special travel agency has adventurous plans to go to Utah, to Colorado and even to take a cruise. In the future, Peggy hopes to create job opportunities for individuals with special needs who want to work in the travel industry.

Park Ridge police thank community for support

The men and women of the Park Ridge Police Department wish to thank our community for their many gestures of support over the past several months.

Law enforcement in our nation has certainly seen its challenges recently, and many residents have called, sent messages of support, dropped off treats and have said “thank you” to our officers, as they encounter them in the community.

As a way of thanking our community for this outpouring of support, we invite you to join us at the Sept. 2 Chamber of Commerce Cruisin’ Park Ridge event.

Our officers will be there to meet with residents [and] will provide popcorn and a blue light bulb to those who are interested. Cruisin’ is held in the Park Ridge Public Library parking lot from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m.

Restore senior discounts We hear now that Mayor Emanuel of Chicago is proposing a discount in the water bills for senior residents in single dwelling homes there.

The residents already are forgiven on their sewer tax, which is half their bi-monthly bill. The village of Morton Grove previously gave such discounts to senior residents until they considered the small income they were missing, so they revoked it.

While the village spends over a million for contaminated land at the former site of Maxwell’s Restaurant, surely they can find alternate ways to prop up the general fund that supports the village expenses.

Maine South rolls over defending state champs Maine South got its football season off to a great start by taking down defending Class 6A state champion Montini 44-13 Friday.

Fotis Kokosioulis ran for 212 yards, while quarterback Nick Leongas was 15-of-24 for 196 yards and added 85 yards rushing on 13 totes.

Leongas through two first quarter touchdown passes and Kokosioulis added two rushing touchdowns in the second quarter for a 27-13 lead at the half. Then Leongas put the game away in the third quarter with a touchdown pass and touchdown run.

•Notre Dame took down Thornton 29-13. The Dons jumped out early with a touchdown less than three minutes into the game.

They added a second score on a quarterback keeper from Tom Drabik and made it 21-7 at the half. A touchdown pass from Drabik to Brendan Cravens midway through the fourth quarter put the game away.

•Niles West also opened its season with a win, rallying for the 28-25 victory over Buffalo Grove. The Wolves trailed 10-0 in the second quater, but took the lead late in the half on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Johnny Pabst.

Pabst added a touchdown run in the fourth quarter for a 21-10 advantage. After a Buffalo Grove touchdown made it 21-18, Matt Galanoupoulos returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown.

Buffalo Grove again answered with 5:39 left, but the Wolves were able to hold on for the win.

•Maine East made it a perfect weekend for the Niles area with a 16-13 win over Schurz. Trailing 7-0, the Blue Demons took an 8-7 lead late in the first half. Julio Cabrales added to the lead with a touchdown run in the third quarter followed by a second successful two point conversion.

Schurz made it 16-13 midway through the fourth quarter, but the Demons stopped Schurz on fourth down late in the game for the win.

Keys to the game: Maine East has to stop Ridgewood senior quarterback Richie Zacharias, a transfer rom Guerin, who had four touchdown passes in the Rebels’ opener.

Maine East was able to battle from behind offensively and will need to have that confidence again if it finds itself down early.

Maine South @ Loyola The details: The schedule doesn’t get any easier for Maine South. After beating reigning Class 6A state champ Montini, South gets defending Class 8A champion Loyola this week.

Last year it was all Loyola as it started off fast in a 49-8 victory. The Hawks will be looking for revenge this year and will have plenty of confidence following the win over Montini last Friday.

Meanwhile, Loyola followed up a 14-0 campaign last year with a win Friday of Marquette High School in Milwaukee, 36-7.

game time 1 :30 p.m. Saturday Fotis Kokosioulis and Nick Leongas to defeat Montini. Kokosioulis ran for 212 yards, while Leongas was 15-of-24 for 196 yards and added 85 yards on the ground. Maine East soccer, volleyball look for winning seasons Fall preview responses were submitted by coaches and all responses are in their words, edited for space and style.

Maine East Volleyball Coach: Kevin Bohn Key Returners: Junior setters Erika Christansen and Kim Sergey are returning players from the varsity team last year.

Erika missed the entire season due to a wrist injury, but she is back to 100% and ready to lead the team as one of our captains.

Kim ended the season splitting the setter responsibility with a senior setter, so we’re looking for her and Erika to split time in the setting position. Senior outside hitter Maria Skoufos is one of our two seniors and captains on

the team. Maria filled in many positions last year as a junior, but has worked her way to her desired position as an outside hitter.

Key Newcomer: Junior libero Maddie Sielski is an incredibly strong defensive player and we’re looking for consistency from her.

She’s proven to be one of our best passers on the team and is looking to be our starting libero.

Goals: As a team, we would like to win our conference. We have set some performance goals during matches that we’ll monitor to help us determine areas we still need to improve on.

Keys: Execution – The girls know what we need to do to be successful, now it’s just a matter of them executing and

performing when they need to.

By the end of the season you expect: By the end of this season, I expect our junior heavy team to have gained a ton of experience in all types of situations.

Coach quote: As my first year as the varsity coach at East, I’m looking forward to keeping the successful trend of the girls volleyball team alive. We’re off to a great start this season, and we have a talented, energetic, and close knit group.

Oakton

Oakton spikers, tennis hope to get to next level With Vince Miranda, firstyear head coach at the helm, the arrow is pointing up for Oakton’s volleyball program. Miranda, who played volleyball at Missouri Valley College and also has over eight years of coaching experience at Sullivan High School and Northside College Prep High School, quickly put a plan in place to turn the Owls back to its winning ways.

“We recruited hard during the off season and our strength in 2016 will be the many talented players we’ll have on our team,” said Miranda. “We have a full squad and much to be optimistic about.

Our goal is to win the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference.”

One of the key newcomers, according to Miranda, will be Meg Stangel, a 6-foot standout middle hitter from Willows Academy.

“We’re definitely expecting big things from her,” said the Owls head coach. “Meg will bring a strong presence to the court and is extremely aggressive.”

Miranda also is high on other players he recruited, Nicole Bertucci and Isabelle Vargas.

Bertucci is a defensive specialist from Hersey High School and Vargas, a 6-foot-2 transfer from Coe College in Iowa, played at Glenbrook South High School.

She will be positioned as a right side hitter for the Owls.

“Nicole may be a 5-foot-3

athlete, but she has good ball control and has definite power with her swings,” Miranda said.

“With Isabelle’s height, she will put up some big blocks for us.

We’ll use her speed and strength to our advantage to give some different looks to our offense.”

The Owls also return three starting players including outsider hitters Abigail Deac and Sarina Lakhani and middle hitter Sabrina Farris.

Farris said that she’s excited about what Miranda brings to the table. “Coach is very tough but also very positive,” she said. “He’s making sure our passing, hitting and serving will be our strengths.

Plus he’s helping us to bond.”

Miranda says that team chemistry is another aspect of turning things around this season.

“Communication and trust will be key for our team,” he said. “We will be a family – we might butt heads sometimes – but for us to play well and compete at a higher level, it’s important to bond throughout the season. Attitude can overcome a lot of adversity.”

TENNIS Kelly Johnson, Oakton women’s

head tennis coach, is ready to take the Oakton Owls to the next level in her first season at the helm.

“I’m excited about coaching this year and my goal is to get the community excited about women’s tennis and build up the roster,” said Johnson. “I think it’s realistic for the team to finish near the top of the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference and have players qualify for nationals.”

Two key players for the Owls will be Pauline Areno (Morton Grove High School) and Nadia Fediv (Park Ridge High School).

“They both have lots of potential and come to Oakton with strong tennis backgrounds from their varsity experience,” said Johnson.

A native of Wisconsin, Johnson graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she played tennis for a nationally competitive program. One of the dates she has circled on the calendar is Saturday, Sept. 10, when the Owls take on Wisconsin Lutheran College, an institution that competes athletically in NJCAA Division III. “Being from Wisconsin, I know the Warriors tennis program is extremely competitive and will

be a big match for us,” Johnson said.

The Owls open the season at Harper College on Friday, Sept.

2 when Oakton competes in a quad match that also includes the College of DuPage and Olivet Nazarene University.

Oakton plays its first home match of the season Sept. 8, when the Owls host conference rivals Moraine Valley College at John’s Park in Glenview.

“Overall, we’re looking forward to the start of a promising season,” said Johnson.

VOLLEYBALL •Maine East (3-0) defeated Leyden 25-19, 25-13. Alexis Ponzi tallied seven kills, Erkia Christiansen and Kim Sergey had seven assists each and Madeline Sielski had four aces.

Paying cash doesn’t make it smart There’s a pretty good chance the Tiny House movement is just going to be a fad Dear Dave, What is your opinion on paying cash for a “tiny house”?

Wes Dear Wes, This may be a really un-hip or un-cool thing to say, but I wouldn’t buy a tiny house at all. Paying cash for something like that might make the mover smarter, but that still doesn’t mean it’s a smart choice.

Now, don’t take what I’m saying the wrong way. I don’t have a problem with people who build tiny houses or buy them. My problem with these things is that there’s no track record on them.

There’s also a pretty good chance they’re going to be just a fad. Another problem is that you’d have a really small market when it comes time to sell your tiny house. In other words, they probably won’t go up in value like a traditional home. They may actually lose value over the years.

There’s a thing in economics called the supply-demand curve, and from what I’ve seen tiny

“We don’t want another disturbance,” she said. “We want to live in peace, and we don’t see it as a possibility if the rules aren’t in place.”

Won Sun Kim, Bobrowski’s attorney, told the board that, while they are sorry for what the Village Motel owners went through with

He died earlier this year, and when we got together with my brother and sister for the reading of the will, we realized he had deducted the amount of the loan from my inheritance.

Everything was equal between us before that. I think that’s wrong.

He loaned you the money, and he had the right to set terms on that.

I understand your frustration. You feel like he took something away that was yours. My point is it was never yours; it was his.

I know it still hurts though.

This is one of the reasons I advise never borrowing money from, or loaning it to, relatives. The best of intentions can end up in places like this.

that the building’s former owner had issues with air conditioning and kept windows and doors open during the summer. This, she added, prevented noise from being muffled.

“Andrew will install airconditioning,” she said. “It’s not in his interest not to.”

As the board prepared to cast the vote, Niles Mayor Andrew Przybylo expressed his confidence in the Music Box. “I’m very certain that the owners will honor [the permit] requirements and do better for the neighbors than it was done previously,” he said.

Trustee Dean Strzelecki, who served as the Niles police chief while Capone’s was open, said he was familiar with the issues surrounding the previous business and felt that the issue was with the owner. Strzelecki added that he was willing to give a new owner a chance.

“I’m going to charge the [village] staff to keep an eye on it,” Strzelecki said. “Because, I don’t want to support one business at the expense

of another.”

After the vote, Czaykowski told reporters that he wasn’t planning to have music that was too loud.

“I’d hate to see someone leaning because they couldn’t hear their girlfriend across the table,” he said.

He said he and Bobrowski were friends, and he had experience running two businesses similar to the Music Box, citing Retro Cafe and Restaurant, a Polish-American sports bar in Chicago’s BelmontCragin neighborhood.

Czaykowski said the previous owner left the structure nearly gutted, so they would need to replace almost everything, including electrical wiring. Nonetheless, he gave an optimistic timeline, saying that it would open “in three months, maybe two months.”

He added that the Music Box would be taking the permit’s conditions seriously.

“We will try to comply with everything that we were told by the board and go from there,” Czaykowski said.

Kim said the Music Box would be happy to work with the Village Motel and other neighbors.

Resident Julie Andelin reiterated what she said during the Aug. 8 meeting. She supported the Music Box because she felt it would fill the same niche as Chambers Seafood Grille and Chop House restaurant, which closed in May 2015.

“I miss a place where I can go and listen to music and not be surrounded by 20-year-olds,” Andelin said. “As far as I know, Chambers never had any trouble.”

Maine South yearbook earns honor Yearbook receives ‘First Class’ ranking from national journalism association Maine South High School’s yearbook, the Eyrie, recently earned national recognition from the National Scholastic Press Association, the school district announced.

The prestigious high school journalism association awarded Vol. 52 of the Eyrie, which utilized a kaleidoscope theme in recording and commemorating the 201516 school year, a “first class”

ranking. School officials said the recognition represents a full level advancement from Vol. 51 and positions the Eyrie to earn “all American” distinction within the next few years.

In their critique, judges lauded the yearbook staff and sponsors’ work on multiple levels, describing the “people” section as “top notch” and noting that the Eyrie included

“some great photography.” “[Staff] do a great job with offering readers different entry points and pack a great deal of information into [the] book,” judges added.

Eyrie sponsors are Maine South English teachers Richard Jones and James McGowan. The English Department is chaired by Matthew Parrilli.

Community gathers supplies for area students Niles Township Food Pantry organized supplies and filled 50 backpacks

Community residents, employees of Guarantee Trust Life Insurance Company and staff at Niles Township worked side by side to collect essential school supplies for children in need.

Township Food Pantry Manager Tony Araque and his team organized supplies and filled 50 backpacks with essential school supplies.

Niles Township Supervisor Marilyn Glazer said the project has been successful year after

year because of the community’s generosity.

“We want children in our township to begin the school year with everything they need to learn without worry,” she said. “Starting a new school year is challenging enough without fretting over not having proper supplies. The success of this project each year is because people in the communities we serve are generous and believe in helping children succeed.”

Senior group donates supplies to District 63 schools MaineStreamers senior group delivered hundreds of schools supplies More than 3,600 students recently headed back to school in one of East Maine School District 63’s seven schools – and just in time.

Maine Township’s MaineStreamers senior group delivered hundreds of schools supplies to help out as the school year got underway. Gathered in August at the group’s monthly luncheon, the collection of items donated included everything from backpacks and markers to notebooks and glue sticks.

“When school districts, townships and other institutions work together to create a caring, connected community, we all benefit,” District 63 Superintendent Scott Clay said.

“Our partnership with Maine Township is a great example.

Township Supervisor Carol Teschky said the seniors in the MaineStreamers group are “incredibly committed” to the community.

“The group often collects food donations at its monthly luncheon, but this summer they put a twist on that and decided to gather supplies,” she added. “District 63 serves so many of the children in the Township; donating these much-needed items was one way we could make a difference.”
