Local stylists battle to celebrate Zoot’s record Proceeds benefited the Niles Township Food Pantry and the Morton Grove Foundation BY JEN SHEA For the Bugle @BugleNewspapers nweditor@buglenewspapers.com

Twenty years to the day after ZootCuts founder Ivan Zoot landed in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most haircuts in an hour, stylists squared off to see who could cut the most hair at the Morton Grove salon last Thursday. On August 23, 1998, Zoot beat the previous record of 18 with 22 haircuts in an hour. Ten years later, he managed 34 haircuts in an hour. This year, he celebrated his Guinness anniversary by presiding over a contest between two stylists at his namesake salon. The proceeds benefited the Niles Township Food Pantry and the Morton Grove Foundation. “We just thought, what better way to acknowledge the anniversary,” Zoot said. “This community has been coming to this location for over 25 years.” At the crowded storefront, Zoot greeted customers near a cooler of beer, stacks of pizza boxes, a cake and platters of cookies. Renata Moser now co-owns the salon with Niles West High School alum Beata Magiet. She said they got the idea for the event when Zoot visited the salon recently to teach a class. Zoot has written a book about his technique, “How to Be a $100,000 Haircutter,” and he is a popular speaker at industry events. “When we did it originally here, the biggest issue was creating a system to do it,” Zoot said of breaking the world record. “I stayed late every night for a year

to create a system to do it.” Stylists Jackie Tomaszewski and Melissa Muro didn’t devise a new system prior to the contest. But they did reach out to all their clients to pack as many people into the salon as possible. “When you’re moving that fast, you have to be very careful,” said Pivot Point instructor Kenneth Washburn, who was there for Zoot’s record-setting hour in 1998. Washburn said he’d been worried about accuracy, but Zoot’s cuts were nice and precise. Muro admitted she was anxious about all the people watching them. Tomaszewski fretted that the

kids’ cuts would be tough to do quickly. But they downplayed any rivalry. “It’s for charity, it’s for fun,” Tomaszewski said. Moser said they thought they might set a new record. She worked with Zoot before they bought the salon from him, and she said a haircutting marathon

is not as challenging as it seems. “They just need to stay totally focused and just know what’s going on in the next chair,” she said. As Moser and Magiet divided customers into two lines, Morton Grove resident Mark Brashear waited with his friend Mark Amenitsch of Niles. “I’m not nervous, hair grows

back,” he said. “It’s a cool way to [celebrate the anniversary], to have a competition.” “When we moved here 20 years ago, we came here first,” Amenitsch said of ZootCuts. Brashear said he’s known Magiet since they both went to Niles West. Like Winnetka resident Brian Stone, he said he was glad to get a haircut for a good cause. “We’re gonna be giving back to the community,” Stone said. “It creates good karma.” As the hour ticked by, kids gathered at the front desk, cheering each stylist on. Zoot hovered between the two stylists, tracking their momentum. “My goal at this point is to train young people in business that want to do these kinds of things,” he said. And then the hour was up. The winner was Tomaszewski, with 22 haircuts to Muro’s 20. “I’m never doing it again,” Zoot said. “It’s time for some young enthusiastic person to do it.”

Drake surprises local girl with hospital visit 11-year-old fan gets both of her birthday wishes one week apart BY RYAN OSTRY Bugle Staff @RyanOstry_BR18 rostry@buglenewspapers.com

Sophia Sanchez had two wishes during her birthday week. One came true when she was surprised by Drake, the 31-yearold Canadian superstar, stopped in to surprise the 11-year-old at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago. Just a week after meeting the entertainer, Sophia learned her other wish had come true — she is getting a new heart. Sophia was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, a condition that often leads to heart failure and a need for heart transplantation in order to survive. She received Drakes attention after she engaged in the “Kiki Challenge” which is a choreographed dance to Drakes song, “In My Feelings.” Drake was in Chicago performing at the United Center on tour, when the little girl sparked his attention so much so that he stopped by for a visit. “When I first saw him I screamed, “Oh my God” and I wasn’t sure if it was real or fake,” Sophia said. Sophia, who was a normal healthy girl that played softball, basketball and cheered, until she her health declined six weeks prior to going into the hospital. “[Sophia’s] coloring was really gray, she had no energy, I had to carry her around from doctor to doctor and she was under care of a cardiologist,” said Natalie Sanchez, Sophia’s mom. At first, doctors could not figure out what was wrong with Sophia, but Natalie knew they could not give up and needed to

find a prognosis. “We went to a bunch of different specialist, and I took her to emergency room begged for more tests and after we found out [what the problem was], they transferred us to Hope Hospital,” Natalie said. With Sophia’s condition, she had to be transferred to Lurie Hospital for proper care. “Lurie had the VAD (ventricular assists device) and heart transplant we needed,” Natalie said. Natalie said that she knows what the ramifications could have been if they couldn’t get Sophia to Lurie Hospital, and she is thankful for her progress up to this point. “We feel blessed we made it here on time because I could of lost my daughter,” Natalie said. “[Sophia] had an open heart surgery about four weeks ago, and it was up and down for the first few weeks, but now she’s getting her energy back and feeling like herself again.” Sophia is dependent on a machine that pumps her heart for her, and she is waited for a new heart. “[Sophia] has been on this list since July 11,” Natalie said. For an 11-year-old that has been stuck inside of a hospital all summer seeing her friends enjoying the warm weather, Drakes visit inspired her to keep pushing forward. “It’s been upsetting [being in the hospital] this summer when I had a lot of fun things planned with my friends,” Sophia said. “When I saw Drake though, I thought it was a miracle, and he told me to keep fighting and stay strong.”

Not only did Drake have great words of wisdom, but he also promised he would bring Sophia

on stage at one of his concerts while singing a song for her, and he told her that they will remain

in contact in the future. Even though being at a hospital for a long time isn’t easy for anyone, Sophia and Natalie said they have enjoyed the care they have received so far from Lurie. “Lurie has been an amazing hospital to us,” Natalie said. “We feel we’re in the best place, everyone’s very nice and they make it the most fun as possible for Sophia that they can.” Lurie showed care for Sophia by letting her have her birthday party with 20 people invited to increase her mood. In addition to all the support the Sanchez family is receiving, a GoFundMe page has been included in the effort to help support Sophia. accounts or by warrant (check) deposits from the Illinois Treasurer’s Office, which represented the Village’s local share of video gaming tax. According to prosecutors, significant portions of the funds withdrawn from this account were used for Griffin’s personal expenses. These expenses include debit card transactions at numerous entities such as Walmart, Home

Depot, Menards, L.A. Fitness, and various restaurants and other establishments. In total, Griffin used approximately $134,584.50 for his own personal expenses. In addition, Griffin cashed checks totaling approximately $13,124.41 that were payable to the Village of Ford Heights at a currency exchange located in Chicago Heights, Illinois. Prosecutors allege that the funds Griffin

obtained by cashing these checks was also for Griffin’s personal use. According to prosecutors, a Certified Public Accounting firm conducted an audit of the Village’s financial records, beginning with the 2015 fiscal year and subsequent years. The accountants were not aware that the Village had any BMO Harris Bank accounts until after they concluded their audit of the 2017 fiscal year,

which was after Griffin had left office. “Theft by a person in a position of public trust is unacceptable and will not be tolerated, “said Foxx. “We would like to thank our law enforcement partners at the local and federal level for their work on this case, as we continue to root out corruption on behalf of Cook County residents who deserve honest government.”

Black Hawk, proud leader of Sac and Fox tribe of Rock River Valley CHUCK SWEENY ROCKFORD REGISTER STAR First, let’s get his name straight. It was Ma-ka-tai-me-she-kia-kiak. In English, he was Black Hawk, war chief of the Sac and Fox tribe, who lived most of his life in the Rock River Valley in northern Illinois. Black Hawk was born in 1767 in Saukenuk, a Sac and Fox village along the Rock River in northwestern Illinois. He built his reputation as a war fighter leading his tribe in skirmishes against the Osage tribe. In the late 1700s and early 1800s, a new enemy appeared — Americans, relentlessly moving west from the eastern states, claiming the land for themselves as they went, building homes and villages and fencing off the fields. The U.S. Army and state militias accompanied the settlers and protected them against the people who had been there for thousands of years. Treaty after treaty was made between the native people and the U.S. government, and they were regularly broken. One of those documents was the Treaty of 1804, signed in St. Louis by representatives of the Sac and Fox tribe and U.S. officials. Black Hawk, who had not been at the signing, thought the treaty merely ceded some of the tribe’s ancestral hunting grounds to the American settlers. But the Sac and Fox had been snookered. Actually, the treaty required the Sac and Fox to vanish forever from 50 million acres, their entire homeland east of the Mississippi River. Black Hawk was so angered that he allied with the great Shawnee Chief Tecumseh to fight alongside the British in the War of 1812, which the Americans started in an attempt to take over Canada. The war ended in a draw in 1815. Black Hawk became increasingly agitated as white settlers streamed into his northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin homeland, protected as always by militia and U.S. troops. However, he wasn’t popular among all of his tribe’s men and women. Most Sac and Fox had resettled in Iowa by 1830 under the leadership of the moderate Chief Keokuk, who was more of a politician than a warrior. He favored

negotiating with the U.S. rather than fighting what he knew was a superior force. In early 1832, Black Hawk decided to return to Illinois to resettle in the Sac and Fox homeland once again. Because about 160,000 whites now lived there, skirmishes broke out, prompting calls by the fearful Americans to rid the area of “Indians.” In April 1832, Black Hawk “led some 1,000 Sac and Fox and Kickapoo men, women and children, including about 500 warriors, across the Mississippi River to reclaim land in Illinois that tribal spokesmen had surrendered to the U.S. in 1804,” according to Encyclopedia Britannica. They weren’t seeking war. In fact, Black Hawk, now 65, hoped to enjoy a peaceful retirement in Illinois. After the cold, hard winter of 1831-1832, they wanted to come back to their old grounds and plant corn where they knew it would yield a bountiful harvest. Only about one-fifth of the Sac and Fox returned; most stayed in Iowa. Illinois Gov. John Reynolds requested U.S. troops and called up the state militia, eventually assembled a force of 7,000 soldiers, both regulars and militia members, to fight the Sac and Fox. Meanwhile, throughout the spring and summer of 1832, Americans burned or otherwise destroyed Sac and Fox fields. One of the sorriest battles in the war took place near what today is Stillman Valley, Illinois. Maj. Isaac Stillman and 275 men were pursuing Black Hawk’s warriors. Black Hawk could not persuade other tribes to join him, so he sent emissaries to Stillman to surrender. But the militiamen were drunk; they fired on the delegation and killed two warriors. Black Hawk planned an ambush in return. In the Battle of Stillman’s Run, 40 Sac and Fox warriors routed Stillman and his 275 men. The battles of the Black Hawk War

claimed about 70 U.S. troops and militiamen as well as settlers. An estimated 500 Sac and Fox were killed. Among the Americans who took part in the battles were Abraham Lincoln, the future president of the U.S., and Jefferson Davis, the future president of the confederation of rebellious states that seceded from the U.S. in 1861. As the war proceeded into the summer of 1832, the Americans pursued Black Hawk and his warriors into southern Wisconsin, defeating them finally in August at Bad Axe on the Mississippi River. On Sept. 2, 1832, the Black Hawk War ended when U.S. Gen. Winfield Scott and Sac and Fox leaders signed a treaty forcing the tribe to cede 6 million acres of land west of the Mississippi River and 50 miles west of the river. Black Hawk lived out the rest of his life in Iowa, dying near Des Moines in 1838. He was 72. In his autobiography, Black Hawk addressed his conquerors, saying: “May the Great Spirit shed light on your path, so that you may never experience the humility that the power of the American government has reduced me to. This is the wish of a man who, in his native forests, was once as proud and bold as yourself.” The chief is honored in a 40-foot statue by Lorado Taft, above the bluffs of the Rock River at Oregon, Illinois. Although he didn’t specifically call the statue “Black Hawk,” that’s what it’s commonly called. Hawks roll past Glenbard West in 2018 opener behind Bobby Inserra’s debut as starting QB BY DRAKE SKLEBA For the Bugle @BugleNewspapers www.buglenewspapers.com

After spending his childhood shagging footballs on Hawk sidelines for his father, Maine South head coach Dave Inserra, Bobby Inserra, made his first varsity start at quarterback For dear old dad in the season opener Friday night against Glenbard West. In 2017, Maine South invaded Glen Ellyn and annihilated the Hilltoppers, 62-34, in the seasonopener for both schools. After stewing about the massive humiliation, for a whole year; as expected, the Hilltoppers, played the game like their hair was on fire — so intense, West picked up three unsportsmanlike penalties, in the first 10 minutes of the game. Maine South took advantage of the over zealous Hilltoppers and rolled to a 35-14 win to open 2018. On the first play of the second quarter Bobby Inserra called his own number on a quarter-

back keeper and out raced the Hilltoppers’ defense 69 yards to the end zone for the first score of the game. “I broke straight up the middle and I thought for sure they were going to tackle me,” Inserra said. “I was able to run as fast as I could to the end zone.” After a Glenbard West punt, Inserra hooked up with junior wide receiver Danny Lazic (4 catches,88 yards, TD) on a picture-perfect throw and catch from 61-yards out. Aiden Carolan converted the second of his five,Hawk PATs for a14-0 lead with 8:40 left in the first half. “Bobby and I worked on that play in practice today,” Lazic said. “The play worked to perfection as Bobby hit me in stride for the touchdown. Great win for us tonight.” After Hawk senior Dylan Harris, recovered a Glenbard West fumble at the Hilltoppers 16, Lazic would SEE KING PAGE 6

Oakton has new volleyball coach Oakton Community College first-year head volleyball coach Miguel Calvillo acknowledges he lives and breathes the sport. This season he is hoping his passion translates into wins for the Owls after winning one match in 2017. Calvillo, 28, spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach for the Owls. His experience also includes starting in high school when he attended Naperville North High School and Plainfield KING FROM PAGE 5 score his second touchdown, this time on a five-yard burst into the end zone. Carolan’s PAT made it 21-0 Hawks, with 7:21 in the half. Three touchdowns in 4 minutes and 39 seconds. Game over. The key defensive play for the

High School. “Volleyball is my life,” Calvillo says. “I’m always training for volleyball, whether it’s playing sand volleyball or beach volleyball. I bring that enthusiasm to Oakton. I’m all in to make sure the team improves from last season while also having fun in the process. I’m comfortable jumping in my new role right away and helping the team any way I can.” However, Calvillo doesn’t have

to shoulder the weight of rebuilding the Owls all alone. Assistant coaches Cyril Onate and Mandy Aragon are former players who are also “all in.” Onate was an outside hitter for the Owls during the 2014-2015 seasons, and Aragon played as a setter in 2016 and 2017. “I’m excited about giving back to Oakton,” Aragon says. “I loved playing here, and now I’m filling a different role. I want to do all I

can to help the program.” According to Calvillo, one of the key returners is middle blocker Yngride Jean-Philippe, one of the tallest players on the team with her 5-foot-11-inch frame. “Yngride brings leadership and desire for us,” Calvillo says. “That’s going to be huge for us to have a successful season. She also has the capability with her athleticism to take over a game.” Calvillo adds that success

for the Owls this season will run through the two setters. Sophomore Alena (A.J.) Alwan (Glenbrook South High School) and freshman Joi Easterling (Lake View High School) are slated at the skill position. “My plan is to run a 6-2 offense,” he says. “That scheme comprises using two setters and three hitters at all times. With our two good setters that will be advantageous for us.”

Hawks occurred right before the end of the first half. Glenbard West faced a fourth down and inches at the Hawks’ three yard-line. West tailback, Tyquon Cox (27 carries, 161 yards, 2 TDs) was met in the backfield by Hawk senior linebackers Jimmy Bartell and Luke Anthony Preston. In the second half the duo would

thwart Cox in the backfield near the Hawks’ goal line on a similar play. “Luke and I blasted the B-gap and met Cox in the backfield,” Bartell said. “We really came to play and took it to them again.” “Jimmy and I love to blitz and it felt really good to nail Cox, on both of those plays,” Preston said.

“Glenbard West came out jackedup but we took it to them again.” Cox would get the Hilltoppers on the board on the first of his two touchdowns on a 35-yard jaunt to the end zone with 4:57 left in third quarter. However, it took the Hawks just three plays to answer. Inserra and junior wide receiver

Ryan Kilburg (3 catches, 77 yards, TD) hooked up on a 64-yard pass play, to the Hilltopper five. Bartell would crash in from five yards out for a 28-7 Hawk lead. Cox would score from one yard out in the fourth quarter to pull the Hilltoppers within 28-14, with 11 minutes to go in the game. Hawk linebacker Cole Chiovan’s, interception set up the final Hawk score of the night. After connecting with Kilberg, from 13 yards out for six, off-setting penalties brought the play back. On the exact same play, Inserra hit Kilburg in the left corner of the end zone closing out the scoring for a 35-14 Maine South victory. Inserra would account for 285 yards of total offense, rushing for 122 yards on 16 carries and a touchdown. He would throw two touchdown passes among his 161 passing yards, for the night. “Ryan totally beat his man,” Inserra added. “I knew he could do it again and we called the same play and it worked to perfection. This was a great win and next week, we have another tough game, at Mount Carmel.” A trip to Chicago’s south side and a date with Mount Carmel at Gately Stadium, awaits the Hawks next week, before returning home for Barrington, on September 7. “Two great teams met once again, “Dave Inserra said. “We played very well tonight. I’m proud of the way Bobby played tonight in his first start at quarterback for us. His big 61-yard touchdown run was a big play for us. Scoring three touchdowns in four minutes, really helped win the game for us.” • Notre Dame 45, Geneva 7 Senior Ty Gavin scored on both sides of the ball in the first quarter, returning an interception for a score and adding a pair of rushing TDs.

You’ve finished Baby Step 2, and now you’re ready for Baby Step 3, which is fully-funding your emergency fund. I don’t see a reason to set aside more than six months of expenses. My recommended range for an emergency fund is three to six months of expenses. If your employment situation is one where there’s more risk of something going wrong, you should lean toward saving six months’ worth. If your employment outlook is really stable, you can go with setting aside three or four months of expenses in an emergency fund. I look at your situation as being more high-risk. You each have jobs, so that’s the good news. But if the company went down, or experienced layoffs, you could find yourselves unemployed at the same time. My advice would be to save up six months of expenses for your emergency fund. With that kind of cash just sitting there, you should be able to make an easier and less stressful transition in almost any kind of unemployment scenario or other emergency. — DAVE * Dave Ramsey is CEO of Ramsey Solutions.
