Labor Day impaired driving, NW Theatre presents ‘The traffic enforcement initiative Fundamentals’ Aug. 29-31 The Morton Grove Police Department announced its plans for an end of summer Labor Day traffic enforcement initiative. This safety initiative will focus on drunk and unbuckled drivers through the use of saturation patrols. The mobilization will occur during August and September so as to encompass the Labor Day holiday, a time of increased traffic volume and crashes. Our department will join the Illinois State Police and the Illinois Department of Transportation in this mobilization. Please utilize a designated driver, ride share, or other alternatives if drinking alcoholic beverages during this holiday season. The Morton Grove Police Department’s goal is to save lives, prevent severe injuries and achieve a higher percentage of safety belt compliance through education, public information, and aggressive safety belt/DUI enforcement.

Golf Road resurfacing in Glenview, Morton Grove

CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that a resurfacing of Golf Road (Illinois 58) between Lincoln Street and Waukegan Road (Illinois 43), in Glenview and Morton Grove, will require daily lane closures starting, weather permitting, Sept. 3. The project consists of patching and resurfacing as well as gutter removal and replacement, detector loop replacement, sidewalk curb ramp improvements and pedestrian crossing signal improvements. The work is expected to be complete by mid-November. Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.

The Fundamentals is also Niles West s 7th annual Thespian Society Production Niles West Theatre presents “The Fundamentals” on August 29 through 31 in the Black Box Theatre at Niles West High School, 5701 W. Oakton, Skokie. “The Fundamentals” was developed by Steppenwolf Theatre Company, through its New Plans Initiative and was presented as part of First Look at Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Chicago, IL; Martha Lavey, Artistic Director, David Schmitz, Managing Director. Direct from Steppenwolf Theatre, this modern—and often shocking— new play was commissioned and developed as part of Steppenwolf’s 2015-16 new play series. Performances are at 5 p.m. on Thursday, August 29; 4 p.m and 7:30 p.m. on Friday, August 30 and 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 31. Tickets are

There will be a free community performance at 10 a.m. on Thursday, August 29. Millie is a smart, resourceful young mother who works as a housekeeper in one of New York’s premier luxury hotels. When an opportunity to move into management gives her the chance to leave behind her blue collar life, Millie must decide how much, and who, she’s willing to sacrifice to secure her family’s future. A funny and scathing look at America’s corporate culture, “The Fundamentals” examines the compromises we make in order to fulfill our dreams. “The Fundamentals” is also Niles West’s 7th annual Thespian Society Production. All cast members, student designers, crew heads and production crew members are inducted members of Thespian Troup #1714. Each “thespian production” offers our elite students the opportunity to tackle

challenging roles and leadership positions in productions not normally produced in a high school setting. Please note: this production contains strong adult language and mature situations. St. John Brebeuf School kicks off a memorable year Community looks forward to Oktoberfest Carnival & Alumni Weekend Friday, Sept. 20-Sunday, Sept. 22 “The 2019-2020 school year will be an absolute memorable one for St. John Brebeuf School,” said Dr. Mary Maloney, Principal. “Jack the Jaguar and our Student Council officers helped us kick off the year in true Jaguar fashion,” she said. School began Tuesday, Aug. 20. According to Dr. Maloney, SJB has configured the school into three teams—the Early Childhood/Primary Team (Preschool–2nd Grade); the Intermediate Team (3rd–5th Grade); and the Middle School Team (6th–8th Grade). “This new configuration will increase rigor and raise expectations for our very intelligent students, who

routinely score above the national average on standardized tests,” she said. St. John Brebeuf School continues to build connections to the community and looks forward to the first annual Oktoberfest Carnival and Alumni Weekend on Friday, Sept. 20 through Sunday, Sept. 22. Open to the community, SJB families, parishioners, and alumni, the event will feature carnival rides, school tours, music, and lots of food and drink. “We can’t wait to see all of our alumni celebrating what it means to be an SJB alum with our current school families,” said Dr. Maloney. Petition for Unimproved Alleys The City of Park Ridge has opened the Alley Petition Process for a pilot Green Alley Paving Program. This program is for the construction of “green alleys” for those alleys that are currently gravel. Green alleys have concrete edges and permeable brick pavers

The following is a summary of the alley paving process. Please note that this process is done separately for each alley: Alley petitions are available on the City s website or at the Public Works Office at City Hall Residents of the block are expected to organize circulation of the petition If the petition is downloaded and circulated, it then must be filed with the City before 5:00 PM on Monday, September 30, 2019 If a majority of property owners along both sides of the alley sign the petition, the City will confirm the petitions and verify that the alley can be properly engineered. Each property owner may only sign the petition one time Once this list is finalized, a public lottery will be held to determine the order of priority After the priority list is established by lottery, ballots will be sent to each resident abutting the first two alleys selected. Estimated cost per property will be included in the ballot letter (Note: the City funds 50% of the total cost and the residents fund 50%) If a majority of property owners vote YES on the ballot (over 50%), the City will move forward with establishing a Special Service Area for each alley An Ordinance is passed proposing the establishment of a Special Service Area and a date for a Public Hearing is set. A Public Hearing is held approximately 60 days after the proposing Ordinance is approved by the City Council After the Public Hearing, there is a 60day waiting period where registered voters and property owners may file an ob-

Dr. Mary Maloney, Principal of St. John Brebeuf School, and Jake the Jaguar, SJB Mascot, welcome students to the first day of school. The Morton Grove- Niles Water Commission (“MGNWC”) was established in 2017 to provide Morton Grove and Niles with a longterm supply of top-quality Lake Michigan water at better and more stable prices than the rate charged by the City of Chicago. The MGNWC selected Evanston as its supplier because of the city’s 100 plus year track record of supplying safe high-quality Lake Michigan water to residents of Evanston, Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Des Plaines, Palatine, Skokie, and Wheeling. The MGNWC negotiated a 50-year agreement with Evanston at an initial rate approximately 75% less than Chicago’s. Future rate increases were stabilized at approximately 2% a year. The MGNWC then designed and built new water-mains, pump stations and a water standpipe to deliver the water to both communities. Outdated infrastructure was replaced or rebuilt , including over 9.5 miles of new water mains, and over 10 miles of resurfaced streets in, Morton Grove, Niles and Skokie. The Project‘s $100 million cost were financed through lowinterest loans from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and long-term bonds with a net interest rate of 2.8% payable over 30 years. General Village revenues will NOT be used to pay this debt. The loans will be paid by water customers as part of the water rate which is less than the Chicago rate.

West Nile Virus - North Shore Mosquito Abatement The North Shore Mosquito Abatement District has found the first West Nile virus positive mosquitoes to occur in our traps in Lincolnwood and Morton Grove this year. Batches of mosquitoes, collected from NSMAD traps in Lincolnwood and Morton Grove, tested positive for West Nile virus in our lab on June 26, 2019. With the WNV positive results from our Lincolnwood and Morton Grove traps, every community that we serve has had WNV positive batches of mosquitoes, including: Deerfield (Cook County) Evanston, Glencoe, Glenview, Golf, Kenilworth, Lincolnwood, Morton Grove, Niles, Northbrook, Northfield, Skokie, Wilmette and Winnetka. Please visit the NSMAD website to see the most current test results. Although the risk of being infected with West Nile virus is low at this time, the NSMAD recommends that residents take personal protection measures to minimize mosquito bites including: using insect repellent, wearing loose fitting clothing and avoiding peak mosquito feeding times during the hours around dawn and dusk. Residents are urged to examine their property and eliminate any items that can hold water, particularly smaller items that may be easily overlooked.

DAVE SAYS

Get mad at the debt you have, then get rid of it Lower interest rate will help you save a little money in the short-term, but the drawback is it can also make you feel like you ve addressed your problem DEAR DAVE: I’ve got about $3,000 in credit card debt. Would it be a good idea to transfer the balance from my credit card to another one that has a much lower interest rate?

TAMMI DEAR TAMMI: Lots of people who find themselves in your shoes make the switch to lowinterest rate credit cards. A lower interest rate will help you save a little money in the short-term, but the drawback is it can also make you feel like you’ve addressed your problem with debt when you really haven’t. You’ve got to change the behavior

DAVE SAYS By Dave Ramsey

and the mindset that put you in that situation in the first place. Besides, most low-interest, or nointerest, credit card offers are only good for a short period of time. There’s always a catch! I discovered long ago that personal finance is only about 20 percent head knowledge and 80 percent behavior. Emotion is a key element to getting out of debt and staying out of debt. You’ve got to get really mad at debt, the impact it has on your financial life, and attack it with a vengeance. Think about how many times debt has been a negative influence on your life. My guess is there were many occa-

sions in the past when you could have done great stuff—I’m talking about meaningful, important things—if you hadn’t had to send a bunch of money to those bozos at the credit card company every month. I want you to really think about it. How about this? First, cut up your credit card and close the account. Then, sell some stuff and take a parttime job nights or weekends for just a little while. You could wipe out all your debt in less than a year by doing that and starting to live on a strict, written, monthly budget. If you don’t get mad about it and take a stand against debt, and become determined you’re never going to fall into that trap again, you’re liable to find yourself back in the same situation or worse!
