Niles Park District Approves Junior Ball Field The Niles Park District Board approved a joint agreement with Culver School District 71 in which the park district will construct a junior baseball field on the Culver School property. “We are grateful to be working with Culver School on this field,” said Tom Elenz, Niles Park District’s Executive Director. “Our baseball and softball programs are very successful, and

more young players are signing up every year.” “A new junior baseball field at Culver is a great idea,” said Steve Hammer, President of Niles Baseball League. “This new field will bring in more kids to play at a younger age while opening up the other fields for more practice and games for our growing league.” The park district approved just under $60,000 to install the field, which will have an anticipated completion for the first evening T-ball game on June 19, 2018. Players, their families and their fans can use Culver parking lots.

COLLEGE > OAKTON

Figueroa’s keynote focuses on ‘poverty and privilege’ Several worthy notes coming out of Oakton Community College Eveyln Figueroa, assistant dean of outpatient clinical affairs at the University of Illinois at Chicago, delivered the keynote address, “Poverty and Privilege: How Understanding Your Privilege Can Help you Better Care for Your Students,” Monday, Aug. 13, as part of Oakton Community College’s orientation week, the kick-off to the fall semester. “Poverty is going to affect your

students and you have to be willing and able to talk to them about it,” Figueroa told a packed audience. And poverty is something she deals with on a daily basis. Figueroa also is executive co-director for the Figueroa Wu Family Foundation, a nonprofit organization that helps bring services into areas of people who are underprivileged in a dignified man-

ner. The foundation also operates the UI Health Pilsen Food Pantry in Chicago that distributes provisions where they are needed most throughout Cook County. Figueroa’s keynote tied directly to Oakton’s engagement and enrichment program for first-year students, which explores equity through the lens of “poverty and privilege” and calls attention to economic, social and political inequality. Beginning in the fall semester, this thematic exploration will be infused into classroom and co-curricular activities, allowing students to connect the dots in a

welcoming environment, critically examining disparities by analyzing the language, contexts, cultures and systems of power that determine those who have—and those who do not. “Eveyln’s talk was extremely powerful and gave each of us a lot to think about on how to help students,” Oakton President Joianne Smith said. “It helped to raise awareness of poverty in everyday life.” Figueroa’s message to Oakton administrators, staff and faculty focused on how poverty affects access to higher education and

ways to combat that. “People in education need to realize that each student comes from a different background,” Figueroa said. “The more supported students are the more likely they are to stay enrolled in school.” Figueroa’s presentation resonated with Oakton faculty, particularly Distinguished Professor of Psychology Bob Frank, who just happened to mentor her as middle school student at a summer camp years ago. “Her presentation was fantastic,” Frank said. “I’m so proud of her. She has a unique way of motivating others. She was spot on that we need to be more understanding of our students and the barriers they’ve had to overcome.”

The Chicago resident was honored at the college’s Aug. 13 fall semester kickoff, “Voices: Ignite Understanding, Drive Progress.” Named for the founding chair of the board of trustees, the accolade epitomizes “excellence in teaching and respect for students and peers” and is presented after a review by the Oakton Educational Foundation Excellence in Teaching Committee. In addition to a plaque, Fakhrid-Deen received $1,500 sponsored by the Oakton Community College Educational Foundation. “I am honored and incredibly humbled to receive this prestigious teaching award,” FakhridDeen says. “I stand on the shoulders of some fantastic educators who have supported me here at Oakton and along my academic SEE OAKTON PAGE 3

Rockford region, Illinois a leader in aerospace, aviation tech

BY CHUCK SWEENY ROCKFORD REGISTER STAR

Many Illinoisans don’t realize it, but our state is a center of aerospace and aviation technology. Illinois’ aerospace cluster is centered around the northern and northeastern portion of the state. The Rockford area alone has more than 70 companies in the aerospace supply chain employing 7,000 people, says the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. If you include Chicago and southeastern Wisconsin, “there are more than 200 companies in the aerospace cluster, including giants such as AAR Corp., Northrop Grumman and Boeing,” DCEO says. Illinois is home to prime contractors and subcontractors that together supply the U.S. military, NASA, Boeing, Airbus and smaller airplane manufacturers with numerous systems and components. In fact, it’s been estimated that there’s no commercial jet in the air today (apart from those made in Russia) that does not have Illinois-made parts and systems on it. Why northern Illinois? Sagar Patel, president of aircraft turbines at Woodward Inc. in Loves Park, explains. “Over time we have built the ecosystem here, with companies that planted their roots here long ago and have adapted to the changing technologies successfully,” says Patel. In 2016 Woodward, founded 147 years ago in Rockford, built a $300 million factory to manufacture jet engine fuel systems that can be found on most jets. The

new, 440,000-squarefoot plant, which is gearing up to employ more than 1,000 people, is the company’s second in Loves Park. The first one, built in 1941, continues to operate. The northern Illinois aerospace ecosystem of companies is recognized as having “solid research and development, staying ahead of the competition from around the world,” Patel said. “If you continue doing that, you’ll continue to be relevant and strong,” he said, adding, “as long as we don’t get complacent. “Customers are looking for continued innovation, quality improvement and cost reduction. If you rest on success, you begin to decline.” Illinois parts are in outer space, too. Precision gears made by Roscoe’s Forest City Gear are working today on the surface of Mars. In 2013, NASA’s $2.5 billion Mars Curiosity Rover was the first robot to drill into the surface Mars, to find evidence of wet environmental conditions in the distant past. According to Forest City Gear’s website, “More than 70 gears produced and manufactured by Forest City Gear helped actuate Curiosity’s mobility systems and the robotic arm responsible for all critical drilling operations.” Forest City Gear also produced gears for the Spirit and Opportunity Rovers that landed on Mars in 2004. The firm’s parts are also on the International Space Station. Rockford’s UTC Aerospace helped design and build the space shuttle for NASA, and has made torpedoes for the

Navy for decades. The firm also built a $50 million testing facility for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, and has been a key subcontractor for Boeing. It employs nearly 2,000 people in Rockford. Boeing , one of the world’s largest corporations, moved its corporate headquarters from Seattle to Chicago in 2001. The company is in a 36-story building at 100 North Riverside Plaza in the West Loop. In 2016, Wood Dale-based AAR Corp. opened a maintenance, repair and overhaul facility at Chicago Rockford International Airport, which is now servicing aircraft from major airlines. Rockford also boasts UPS’ secondlargest air hub for parcel sorting. In addition to aviation manufacturing, Illinois’ airports provide jobs for 337,419 people, either directly or indirectly, according to an Illinois Department of Transportation study. Altogether they earn $12.8 billion. From commercial airlines that serve 11 Illinois airports to the variety of general aviation services found throughout the state, the aviation industry creates more than $40 billion in economic activity, according to IDOT. Illinois also boasts one of the world’s busiest airports, Chicago O’Hare, which in 2016 handled 867,635 flights, according to the FAA. Chicago Midway handled 253,046 flights during the same year. Chuck Sweeny of the Rockford Register Star can be reached at csweeny@rrstar.com. Editor’s note: The weekly Illinois Bicentennial series is brought to you by the Illinois Associated Press Media Editors and Illinois Press Association. More than 20 newspapers are creating stories about the state’s history, places and key moments in advance of the Bicentennial on Dec. 3, 2018. ARE YOU

READY? Local teams are ready to begin a new season as high school football kicks off Friday night

FROM STAFF REPORTS www.buglenewspapers.com

With the start of the new school year comes a new football season and new expectations for all teams. Every team will enter Friday night with the same 0-0 record, and all of them will have the same ultimate goal — to make the playoffs and win a state championship. That is no different for the teams in the Voyager Media coverage area.

MAINE SOUTH The Hawks are coming off a season in which they posted an 11-2 record (5-0 Central Suburban South Conference), falling to eventual Class 8A state champions Lincoln-Way East in the state semifinal. Maine South returns only one offensive starter in Peter Skoronski, a two-way lineman. The offense will need to replace Voyager Media Offensive Player of the Year Fotis Kokosioulis and his 1,626 yards on 182 carries and 24 touchdowns on the ground, as well as 31 receptions for 350 yards and five scores. Danny Wolf and Jimmy Bartell will look to do just that. Cole Dow and Bobby Inserra spent the offseason competing for quarterbacking duties and

whoever wins the job is expected to throw to juniors Michael Velazquez and Ryan Kilburg and senior Brian Barry. The Hawk defense returns nine starters including linebackers Jimmy Bartell and Luke Preston. Bartell was the leads top tackler a year ago. Up front, South returns Jonny Halvorsen, a senior All-CSL defensive lineman.

NOTRE DAME For the Dons, everything begins with returning East Suburban Catholic Conference Player of the Year Ty Gavin. The senior posted where 1,217 rush yards and 19 touchdowns. He also had 23 catches for 305 yards four scores. Overall he posted 1,522 yards from scrimmage and 23 TDs. As a unit, Notre Dame went 7-3 (5-2 East Suburban Catholic Conference) and lost to Minooka 22-19 in overtime in first round of Class 8A playoffs. Gavin will run behind senior returning linemen Patrick Banich and Dominic Deano. Three players are locked in a battle as senior Rory O’Donnell, junior Max General and sophomore Anthony Sayles all vie for the job. Whoever gets the job will be throwing the direction of SEE PREVIEW PAGE 6

Thirteen Owls playing baseball next season After Oakton Community College’s National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III World Series championship baseball team (44-17) was recognized before a recent Cubs and White Sox game, 13 players from that squad have committed to continue their playing careers at National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I, II or III and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) institutions. “This past season was extremely special, winning Oakton’s first national title,” says Oakton head baseball coach Bill Fratto. “The accolades keep rolling in for Oakton’s 2018 team, and we’re proud to receive such recognition for a stellar season.” Heading the list of transfers is NJCAA Division III World Series MVP pitcher Tommy Gertner (Northbrook, Glenbrook North High School), who will be playing for the Old Dominion University Monarchs, an NCAA Division I school that competes in Conference USA. Gertner, who earlier this year was named to the NJCAA Division III All-America Second Team, finished second in the country in wins (10) and strikeouts (103). He pitched 14 1/3 innings, struck out 12 batters and allowed four earned runs in the World Series.

BUSINESS + REAL ESTATE DAVE SAYS

Work together to raise financially responsible kids DEAR DAVE, My wife and I are not on the same page when it comes to money and our two teenage daughters. I think they should be learning the value of work and money, but she doesn’t want them to work. She regularly hands them spending money and buys them expensive gifts. I want our girls to have some nice things, but this is starting to cause problems in our relationship. Do you have any advice? STAN DEAR STAN, Kids should learn to work and make money at an early age. We’ve given nice gifts to our kids, but the difference is they also worked and made money for themselves. The gifts we gave them were for special occasions. Showering our kids with money and expensive toys all the time was not our way of life. In this situation, your wife is allowing them to be nothing but consumers. I know she loves them, but they’re not learning how to work, and they’re not learning how to save or give. This is setting them up for a lifetime of unrealistic expectations. If something doesn’t happen to change things, you’re going to end up with two spoiled little girls, who think they should be given everything their entire lives. Still, I think the biggest problem is you and your wife are experiencing a communication and marital breakdown. If the kids weren’t in the picture, I’ve got a feeling the same problems would exist. The difference is they would manifest themselves in other ways. Obviously, your wife needs to stop being so impulsive where the kids are concerned. Try sitting down with her and gently explaining your feelings. Let your wife know you love her and how generous she is, but you’re worried this is having a negative impact on your children. Maybe you could try to establish some guidelines as to when really nice gifts are appropriate, too. There’s a middle ground you can reach, but it’s going to take some time and effort. Most of all, it means the two of you are going to have to communicate and work together for the good of your kids. —DAVE
