Gemini school expanding to include 6th grade Junior high building to get 66,500-square foot addition

District 63 began construction on an addition to Gemini Junior High School last week.

On Thursday, Aug. 9, administrators launched the 66,500-square foot addition, which will let them move sixth grade classes to Gemini and convert it to a middle school.

The addition is one phase of a plan that includes a new preschool and redrawn district boundaries. District 63 officials say it will feature a performance space, an upgraded fitness center and more parking spots.

“This expansion will allow us to develop a middle school experience that is designed specifically for middle level learners,” Superintendent Scott Clay said. “The plan is for sixth grade to begin attending Gemini in August 2019.”

Clay said the addition has been in the works for the past two years.

They plan to break ground on a new preschool next year.

“We’re very excited about taking this step,” District 63 Communications Director Janet Bishop said. “We’ll be able to serve all of what will be a population of over 1,000 students.”

The sixth grade shift was a recommendation of the facilities utilization study District 63 commissioned.

Stevenson, Nelson and Apollo elementary schools are running out of room, and preschool enrollment has doubled even as they’ve moved to full-day kindergarten.

“We are creating a space that is responsive to the unique needs of adolescent learners,” Gemini Principal Lewis Roberts said. The addition “takes into consideration the brain development of this age group, and will support the skills needed for them to succeed.”

Roberts said they’re adjusting their entire educational approach from a junior high paradigm, which is similar to high school, to a middle school philosophy.

The latter emphasizes social and emotional growth.

“In order to fully meet the needs of our middle level learners, we need to have our sixth, seventh and eighth grade students in the same school,” Clay said.

Next year, more than 350 sixth graders will join their junior high peers. The construction could continue until 2020 or longer.

“The renovations and the build-

ing of additional space will allow us to more effectively focus on the specific academic, emotional, social and physical needs of the students we serve,” Roberts said.

Manufacturing apprenticeship program comes to Oakton Oakton will collaborate with ICATT to offer apprenticeships Oakton Community College is one of just 11 colleges in the United States to have partnered with Industry Consortium for Advanced Technical Training (ICATT), an innovative leading apprenticeship program in the Midwest for high-tech manufacturers.

Oakton will collaborate with ICATT to begin offering industrial maintenance apprenticeship programs for students this fall.

Oakton’s ICATT apprenticeships are benchmarked on the German Dual Education System, an industry-led approach to education developed in conjunction with technology leaders, combining “on-the-job training” with theory and practice through an associate degree program to train a globally-competitive workforce.

The program is accessible, even for small companies, and classroom and lab training is provided

by Oakton.

“Partnering with ICATT allows for companies to hire our students while they learn at Oakton,” says Oakton Manufacturing Technology Chair Joe Cirone.

“The company pays for them to complete their education. The program allows students to work three days and take classes at Oakton two days a week.”

“ICATT is very happy to begin

its partnership with Oakton College this year as this helps to fill a need in the Chicagoland area,” says Director of the ICATT Apprenticeship Program Virginia Rounds. “At least three apprentices will be using Oakton to earn an associate degree as part of their ICATT apprenticeship.”

Rounds adds that companies already on board with the ICATT apprenticeship program offered at Oakton include SG360° and Federal-Mogul Motorparts.

“Oakton is the first college in Illinois that the ICATT Apprenticeship Program has selected to help train apprentices to the world-renown standard for mechatronics technicians set by the German industry,” she says.

“In addition to expanding on the existing apprenticeships, we also have our eye on Oakton as a strategic partner for apprentices in other professions including pharmaceutical manufacturing technology. We are very excited about the growth opportunities with Oakton.”

According to the Chicago Workforce Partnership, manufacturing is the ninth highest growing occupation in Cook County for the second quarter of 2018. U.S. Department of Labor statistics show more than 327,000 manufacturing jobs have been added across the country so far this year. The U.S. Department of Labor also reports that 87 percent of apprentices in the nation are hired after completing training programs, earning an average salary of more than $50,000 per year.

Oakton’s manufacturing tech-

nology program focuses on CNC machining, CNC setup and programming, automation systems design and maintenance, PLC programming and machine control systems, industrial robotics systems, sensor technology and vision systems. In addition, Oakton is one of two community colleges in Illinois offering bar code/ RFID technologies.

“With Oakton being a small college, class sizes are about 15 students so they get more attention and hands-on experience than they would elsewhere” Oakton Manufacturing Technology Coordinator Boguslaw Zapal says. “Our new facilities for our manufacturing labs opened in 2005, and they are constantly being updated in all areas, including CNC and robotics, so students are always being trained at the highest level.”

Students who have completed Oakton’s manufacturing technology program have found employment in a wide variety of manufacturing and distribution organizations throughout the Chicago area. Recent graduates hold diverse technical positions, from programming CNC machines for high tolerance part creation to designing products with rapid prototyping equipment.

Sheriff Launches Opioid Crisis Awareness Podcast Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart launched an opioid crisis awareness podcast today titled “Breaking Free: Dispatches from the Opioid Crisis.” The podcast aims to shed light on the devastating nature of opioid addiction and to give the public a better understanding of those trapped in its grip. The podcast features an interview with a 24-year-old man currently receiving drug treatment at the Cook County Department of Corrections. The man, who agreed to participate in the podcast but wished to remain anonymous, nearly died in May after he was discovered unresponsive on the floor of a Skokie Courthouse bathroom. Officers were

able to save his life with the overdose-reversing drug Naloxone. The incident was captured on a body-worn camera and released on the Sheriff’s social media page where the video was viewed tens of thousands of times.

The candid conversation featured in the 16-minute podcast provides an illuminating look at the difficulty of overcoming an opioid addiction. By the man’s account, he has overdosed 14 times.

“This crisis touches the lives of so many – almost everyone knows someone struggling with an opioid addiction,” said Sheriff Dart. “An important step to fixing this crisis is understanding those who struggle with it. I hope this podcast opens eyes and minds to how easily an opioid addiction can happen and how hard it can be to stop.”

1908 Springfield race riot led to the creation of the NAACP

BY THE (SPRINGFIELD) STATE JOURNALREGISTER One of the pre-eminent civil rights organizations was born from one of the worst moments in Springfield’s history. In August 1908, a white mob, thwarted in an attempt to lynch two black inmates in the Sangamon County Jail, went on a rampage. They destroyed dozens of black-owned businesses and homes in Springfield. Two black men were lynched and five white men died during the riot, with dozens more injured. Other deaths connected to the riots happened in the days prior to and after it ended. Appalled that such an event took place in Abraham Lincoln’s hometown, civil rights activists in New York began meetings that led to the formation of the NAACP. For numerous reasons, noticeable tension along racial lines existed among the 50,000 people who lived in Springfield in 1908. That tension boiled over in August, having simmered for at least a month after the first of two highprofile accusations were made against black men.

NEW TO TOWN On or near June 1, 1908, 17-year-old black teenager Joe James jumped off a freight train passing through Springfield. Police ordered him to leave but James stuck around, and was eventually arrested for loitering.

Late the evening of July 4, when he was granted a temporary parole from jail for good behavior, by James’ own account, he must have wandered drunk and fell asleep outside. That same night, an intruder resembling James’ description entered the Ballard home.

Alerted by his daughter Blanche’s screams, Clergy Ballard, a popular white mining engineer, caught up to the stranger outside the house. The two scuffled and Ballard returned bleeding profusely. He died the next day. Ballard’s sons and other young men searched the neighborhood and found a sleeping James and beat him senseless. Police arrived and broke up the bludgeoning.

James denied knowing anything about the home invasion or Ballard’s injuries, still he was charged with the crime.

Perhaps the rage would have faded and James’ trial would have been held without incident had Mabel Hallam not falsely claimed a black man named

George Richardson sexually assaulted and dragged her from her Springfield house near midnight on Thursday, Aug. 13, 1908.

THE FIRST DAY Crowds grew outside Sangamon County Jail, where Richardson was being held, as news of Hallam’s alleged rape spread. The state militia was summoned, but it would take hours for troops to arrive.

Sangamon County Sheriff Charles Werner decided to sneak Richardson and James out of the jail, hoping that if the crowd learned they were gone, people would go home. Werner had a fire station nearby sound its alarm and dispatch its trucks past the crowd.

Werner was able to get prisoners out of the jail and into a car that sped off to Bloomington.

The crowd became incensed when it was discovered they had been duped.

A handful of militiamen arrived at the jail and pushed back the crowd. But by then, word had spread the car used to escort James and Richardson out of town belonged to Harry Loper, a white downtown restaurant owner.

Within minutes, thousands assembled in front of Loper’s restaurant. An estimated 5,000 rioters destroyed Loper’s restaurant and torched his car. Then, organized groups methodically decimated dozens of black businesses and tenant rooms with bricks, torches and bullets.

Several black residents, either working downtown or who were out at the wrong place at the wrong time, were attacked and beaten.

By 11 p.m., the mob had reached the “Badlands,” where many of the city’s black families lived. The mob spent the next four hours torching roughly 40 black homes, avoiding those lived in by whites. At about 2 a.m., the mob reached Scott Burton’s home. Burton had already lost his barbershop business and had sent his family away.

He was soon beaten and lynched; his body was mutilated for the next half hour with bullets and knives. Only after Col. Richings J. Shand ordered his militia troops to fire low into the crowd shortly after Burton’s lynching did rioting end for the day.

THE SECOND DAY

By Saturday morning, Aug. 15, six were dead or dying and more than 100

whites and blacks had been injured.

Many black residents had fled the city, although some found shelter in the basements of white neighbors while others organized defensive fronts and patrols. Dozens sought refuge at Camp Lincoln and inside the Illinois State Arsenal, where the militia, sent from throughout the state early Saturday morning, pitched tents.

Stationed at various locations throughout the city, law enforcement officers fanned across town chasing small outbreaks and rumors of outbreaks the second day of the riot.

Organized rioting seemed to be over, but between 7 and 8 p.m., smaller bands began forming. They gathered quickly, struck, dispersed, then gathered somewhere else with little warning. At about 8 p.m., roughly 1,000 rioters approached the Arsenal. But they scattered once militiamen there showed their guns.

The mob reorganized several blocks to the southwest, outside the home of William Donnegan, an elderly black man and retired shoemaker who owned considerable property. He also was married to a white woman. Rioters dragged Donnegan, 84 years old and begging for mercy, out of his home. They slashed his throat and proceeded to lynch him. Militia and city police arrived as Donnegan was being raised. He died the next day.

AFTERMATH Although Donnegan’s murder traditionally is seen as the last act of the two-day riot, hate crimes and threats continued for months. More than 100 white residents would be indicted on riot-related charges, including murder.

Trials were held but only one person — Abe Raymer, an accused ringleader — was charged in relation to the riots (with petty larceny). Hallam, the young married woman whose rape claim pushed the town over the edge, would later confess she concocted her story (possibly, according to one newspaper, to conceal an affair with a white lover).

Richardson had been one of several black laborers working on a house near her home and made an easy scapegoat.

He was released from jail and returned to Springfield, eventually retiring from Bell Telephone as a janitor.

For 10 years, Caitlin McHale showed power, strength and elegance as a gymnast.

After leaving the sport, she was looking for a new challenge and she found one that carried over two of the three traits she used as a gymnast in martial arts.

Now 17-years-old, McHale is part of the Hill Brothers Team training out of SUDA International Training Center in Plainfield.

She will be heading to Columbia to compete in the Pan-American Championships for Team USA in Jiu-Jitsu.

“I had to adjust a lot of what I did because one is a nice, elegant sport and the other is beating people up,” McHale said with a smile. “The flexibility has helped a lot and the sports work ethic has carried over.”

Originally after giving up gym-

nastics, McHale joined out of a desire for self-preservation.

“I was in gymnastic for 10 years and I quit and I knew I wanted to do an individual sport that still felt like a team and I wanted to know how to protect myself,” she said. “So, I started two-and-a-half years ago and I loved it automatically. “ What started as wanting to learn striking, McHale started Jiu-Jitsu and rose through the ranks quickly and now will make her first trip to compete abroad.

“I started competing after six months and I never expected it to come this soon for me,” she said.

“It has been a lot of hard work and dedication. I come in every day and train hard and there is no set time when something is going to happen, you can’t expect anything, you just have to go hard. Since I started, it has been my dream [to compete overseas] and I honestly didn’t think SEE MADE PAGE 7

Northwestern President Morton Schapiro thanked key benefactors of the project at the dedication ceremony, held in the Walter Athletics Center’s auditorium. “In addition to our 504 varsity student-athletes, these wonderful new facilities will benefit our 1,200 undergraduates playing club sports, our more than 5,000 intramural athletes and our entire community,” President Schapiro told an audience of approximately 200 Northwestern trustees, administrators and other supporters. “I want to thank from the bottom of my heart Kimbra and Mark, Kimberly and Lou, and everybody who helped us get to this unbelievable destination. Your leadership and your philanthropy have made an undeniable impact across our campuses, and we are truly grateful.”

The Walter Athletics Center is the final installment of a series of new and renovated lakefront athletics and recreation facilities.

Jim Phillips, the Combe Family Vice President for Athletics and Recreation, said that before embarking on the ambitious master plan for the lakefront facilities, he and others visited 64 college and university campuses. They found the most successful athletics and recreation facilities were designed to integrate athletics into the student experience, not the other way around.

“Our facilities are now found in the heart of campus, alongside classrooms and laboratories and residence halls, allowing more interaction than ever before among our student-athletes and this incomparable university community,” Phillips said.

Jared Thomas ‘19 shared examples of how the new facilities already have made an impact on his experience as a student-athlete.

“Our football team has been privileged to use this building since late June, and it has been a game changer,” said Thomas, a journalism major in the Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications and offensive lineman for Northwestern Football.

“I started my morning in our pristine new locker room, walked upstairs to Ryan Fieldhouse and Wilson Field to warm up, practiced outside on Chap and Ethel Hutcheson Field, did a little extra work in the weight room, went upstairs to eat lunch in Nona Jo’s on the patio overlooking the lake and Chicago skyline, and checked in with my academic adviser down the hall. Last year those activities would have taken me into four different buildings surrounding Ryan Field,” Thomas said. “Next month when the fall quarter begins, I’ll be closer than ever before to the classrooms, studios and libraries I use every day.”

Kelly Amonte Hiller, the Combe Family Head Lacrosse Coach, spoke about the impact of the facilities on the lacrosse team, calling the addition of the Walter Athletics Center “a quantum leap forward for our program and for all of the Wildcats.”

McHale said she was never sure if she was ready for the next step, but believes in what coaches Ron and James Hill say. The Hill Brothers are also the coach for the US team she will compete on.

“I trust my coaches that whatever they think I can do,” McHale said. “I believe in them and they think I am ready – so I am going to go and give it my best and hopefully win.”

McHale has had another mentor in the training room in 21-year-old Alexandra Barillas of Joliet.

Barillas has been part of SUDA International for nearly 10 years and will be making her fourth trip out of the country to compete when she heads to Sweden in November to compete in the Jiu-Jitsu World Championships.

While she is getting ready for her own tournament, Barillas is also happy to help McHale.

“I am excited I can be there for her and we can be there and push each other. I know what she is going to see, I know what to expect, so I can help her get there,” Barillas said. “We all inspire each other and it is good that we have girl power in here too.”

Barillas first started with SUDA after watching her younger brother, Christian, at one of his classes.

“When I saw my little brother out there grappling, I knew I wanted to do this, so I joined,” she said.

Barillas was no stranger to rough sports before joining, as she played soccer and rugby at Plainfield Central. “I never expected to go this far and when I was given the opportunity I was so blessed. I have my whole family who believes in me

Like McHale, the Hill brothers will be the head coaches for Team USA when Barillas heads to Sweden. Travel and coaching internationally is nothing new to the Hills.

“Our first time coaching a US National Team was in 2008 was and we have been everywhere,” he said. “We have been to Russia three times, we have been inside the Kremlin – we had a private, government tour of the Kremlin and we were in rooms that only three US Presidents have been in,” Ron Hill said. “We went from just trying to make a tough team to going all over the world.”

The Hills will coach athletes from all across the United States as well as their homegrown athletes that are making the trips.

“We have local athletes earning spots on US National teams right in their back yard and people don’t know about it,” Hill said. “Caitlin is our 32nd person to make a US National team and this is James and I, our sixth US N=ational team that we are coaching. The worlds are crazy because that is all some people do.

Some of the countries are government funded, it is Olympic caliber.”

While SUDA International has sent more than 30 athletes overseas, that is not all the Hill Brothers Team focuses on.

“We have business owners, police officers and we still have the element of a world-wide team,” Ron said. “We are going to make better people out of them by teaching them martial arts and then what comes of it is what comes of it.”

Should children be financially obligated to help parents?

DEAR DAVE, Do you believe the adult child of a senior citizen, who is physically and mentally healthy but has neglected to plan for retirement, should be burdened with providing financial assistance to that parent?

ROBBIE DEAR ROBBIE, Based on the wording in your question, I can only believe you don’t think the adult child should be “burdened” to provide this assistance. My guess is you’re talking about one of your own parents. I understand that you might be aggravated with a parent who has been irresponsible with their money. But in my mind, there’s a bigger question. How big is the burden?

I talked to a guy recently who was making $1.5 million a year. He was questioning whether he should help his dad — an older man in poor health, who didn’t handle his money well — by giving him $1,000 a month. There’s no question you give that guy money. You’re making millions, but you don’t want to help your sick dad? Come on! But if you bring home $2,000 a month, and your family is barely getting by, you’re not morally required to financially take care of a parent who was irresponsible with their money.

It’s all relative. Do you have the money? Can you provide this help without placing an undue burden on yourself and your family? If the answer is yes, you may be asking more about your own aggravation than any sort of moral obligation.

SCOTT DEAR SCOTT, My wife and I love animals. We’ve had a least one dog the whole time we’ve been married. Still, I think a full emergency fund of three to six months of expenses will cover you and your pet. You go through some expense as a pet owner, along with happy, wonderful times and heartbreaking things, too. We lost our golden retriever recently, and I can tell you that was really hard on everyone. You love them like they’re family, but you still have to use common sense sometimes, and remember that they’re animals and not human beings. Part of that includes spending reasonable amounts of money on them — and in some unfortunate cases — doing things with the animal’s best interest, not our own desires, in mind.

What is a reasonable amount?

That depends on how stable you are financially. It’s really a ratio question of expense to means. But no, I wouldn’t recommend a second emergency fund just for pets.

Seniors’ senses of smell & taste change with age Sense of smell is vital to personal health Aging comes with several sensory changes, many of which people expect.

Loss of hearing or diminishing vision are widely associated with aging. But one’s senses of smell and taste may diminish with aging as well.

The senses of taste and smell work in concert.

The sense of smell is vital to personal health, not only because inhaling pleasant aromas can provide comfort and stress relief through aromatherapy and help trigger important memories, but also because smell enables a person to detect the dangers of smoke, gas, spoiled food, and more.

The National Institute on Aging says that, as a person gets older, his or her sense of smell may fade, and that will also affect taste.

The Mayo Clinic says some loss of taste and smell is natural and can begin as early as age 60.

Adults have about 9,000 taste buds sensing sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and umami flavors, or those corresponding to the flavor of glutamates.

Many tastes are linked to odors that begin at the nerve

endings in the lining of the nose.

Medline says the number of taste buds decreases as one ages, and that remaining taste buds may begin to shrink.

Sensitivity to the five tastes also begins to decline.

This can make it more difficult to distinguish between flavors.

Similarly, especially after age 70, smell can diminish due to a loss of nerve endings and less mucus in the nose.

With the combination of the reduction of these important sensory nerves in the nose and on the tongue, loss of smell and taste can greatly affect daily life.

Changes in these senses can contribute to feelings of depres-

sion, diminish one’s enjoyment of food and cause harmful conditions, such as extreme weight loss from disinterest in food to problems associated with overusing salt or sugar.

Although aging is often to blame, loss of smell and taste also may be tied to early symptoms of Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s disease.

Cancer treatments, medications, lack of saliva, colds, flu, and other factors may contribute to sensory loss. Changing medications or treatments may help.

It’s important to bring up diminished flavors or smells with a doctor to rule out something more serious and to determine what might help restore pleasure from smells and flavors.

An otolaryngologist, or a doctor who specializes in diseases of the ears, nose and throat, may be able to help fix the problem, though some people may be referred to a neurologist or another specialist.

Continuing to use one’s sense of smell and taste by cooking, gardening, trying new flavors, and experimenting with different aromas may help slow down the decline these senses.

Although age-related loss of taste and smell cannot be reversed, some such cases may be treatable.
