Police, communities come together for Night Out Nationwide campaign designed to boost crime prevention awareness, strengthen police-community partnerships By jonathan samples managing editor

Police departments throughout thenorthwestsuburbswilljoinforces with thousands of communities across the country during the 33rd annual National Night Out crime and drug prevention campaign.

Niles and Park Ridge police, as well as Cook County Sheriff’s Police and Maine Township, are among area departments participating in National Night Out Aug. 2.

The Park Ridge Police Department is sponsoring an NNO event in Hodges Park, located in front of City Hall, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The Niles Police Department will host its NNO event at Oak Park, located at the corner of Main Street and Ottawa in Niles, from 6 to 9 p.m.

In Maine Township, Cook County Sheriff’s Police, the Golf Maine Park District, North Maine Fire District, Neighborhood Watch and other

community businesses will join Maine Township as sponsors of an NNO event at Dee Park, 9229 Emerson, in unincorporated Maine Township.

The event is scheduled to run from 6:30 to 9 p.m. and will feature a karate demonstration by Golf Maine Park District’s Taekwondo classes as well as games, prizes, raffles and a poster contest.

In Niles, police expect this year’s event to be bigger than previous years.

Police Sgt. Robert Tornabene said a drone safety presentation has been added to the department’s NNO event, which will also feature a selfdefense demonstration, booths for animal control and home security, and other activities that promote safety and crime prevention.

The Niles Township High School District 219 Board of Education unanimously approved changes to an agreement guaranteeing that it would get a portion of the funds generated from a tax increment financing district at the former site of the Purple Hotel.

Under the previous agreement, District 219 would have received all of the funds generated from the TIF. Under the new agreement, the district would only get the equivalent of the cost of educating any students who may live within the TIF’s boundaries.

The change was motivated by a new proposal to redevelop the

site. The village of Lincolnwood told District 219 that proposal calls for a mixed-use development, and that the current agreement is an obstacle to getting the project off the ground. The board agreed, approving the changes with barely any discussion.

Originally built in the 1960, a hotel northwest of the wedgeshaped intersection of Touhy and Lincoln avenues has been one of Lincolnwood’s more distinct buildings. The hotel went through many names, but thanks to its purple brick exterior, most people knew it as the “Purple Hotel.”

The building was shuttered in 2007 due to health code violations.

Since then, there have been several plans to redevelop the site.

To encourage redevelopment,

Lincolnwood created the LincolnTouhy TIF. When a TIF district is created, each taxing body’s share of the property taxes collected in the TIF is frozen. When taxes are raised, the extra money that would have otherwise gone to school districts and other entities gets deposited into a TIF fund. Because this means that the taxing bodies get less revenue, the municipality usually makes revenue-sharing agreements with those entities to at least partially make up for lost property tax revenue.

When North Capital Group acquired the Purple Hotel property in 2011, the real estate company intended to keep the building intact.

Maine Township opens community garage sale registration Aug. 1 Sign up for residents begins Aug. 1, nonresidents sign up Aug. 8 Residents in Maine Township can start planning for the annual community garage sale in September.

The township announced that residents can begin signing up for spaces Aug. 1, and nontownship residents can sign up a week later on Aug. 8.

Scheduled for Sept. 24, the annual event is organized by the MaineStay Youth and Family Services Department of Maine Township. The garage sale benefits at-risk youths in the Maine Township community, as well as the Maine Township Emergency Food Pantry.

Spaces are 8-by-16 feet and sold on a first-come, firstserved basis for $25 each.

Premium outdoor spaces are $30, and table rentals are available for $10. There are

also four premium indoor spaces inside the garage at $75, including a table.

Donated merchandise will not be accepted for resale this year, according to the township.

However, residents and other event participants can still get involved in several other ways.

People can reserve space to sell their own items, make a financial donation or come by to participate in the sale.

Sponsors to date include Maine Township, Senior News 50 and Better and the Suburban Resource Guide for Seniors. Proceeds benefit the Adventure Maine Township Summer Camp for at-risk youth and the township’s food pantry, which serves hundreds of families each month.

The annual community garage sale will be held rain or shine from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

District moves Caldwell Recreation Center forward Vote for a new contract with Wight took place during the board’s July 20 meeting

The Niles Park District Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a contract with Chicagobased Wight & Company to handle the overall construction of a new facility in the 7800 block of Caldwell Avenue.

The company previously handled the design of the facility, which will have an estimated total cost of about $11 million.

But as park district Executive Director Joe LoVerde said during the meeting, construction is an unpredictable process.

Even though all the parties involved are looking to keep costs under control, there is always a chance that some unexpected expense could force the total cost to increase.

In the meantime, demolition crews are hard at work gutting the building. The board is planning to mark the beginning of the construction of the new facility with a groundbreaking ceremony that will take place Aug. 3 at 11 a.m.

As previously reported by the

Bugle, the existing building at the site, which served multiple purposes over the years, has deteriorated. The plans called for the removal of all but the most fundamental structures, or the skeleton of the building. The walls, the roof and the utilities will be replaced completely.

Once finished, the new Caldwell Recreation Center will have an indoor soccer field, an indoor basketball court, a dance studio and a multipurpose children’s activity room.

The vote for a new contract with Wight took place during the board’s July 20 meeting.

While the new facility probably won’t be ready until next year, park board Vice President Chris Zalinski told officials that he was happy to see the old structure gutted.

“It’s been fun watching it,” he said. “I enjoy the destruction and construction.”

“Even in its present state of ongoing demolition, it’s looking better than it has in decades,” Nakanishi said. “I’m very happy to see this happening. The old abandoned building was an eyesore. With a new building across the street, it should help improve our property values, too.”

But, the project wasn’t entirely without criticism.

When Jason Trunco ran for a four-year seat on the Niles Park District Board of Commissioners last year, he said incumbent board members were doing a great job but felt that the board could use some new blood.

However, during the July 20 board meeting, Trunco lashed out at his former opponents, commissioners Ray Czarnik and Chris Zalinski, alleging that their children benefited from nepotism. Trunco also argued that this favoritism extended further and it was keeping residents

who didn’t have connections to the administration from getting jobs, saying other Niles residents shared their concerns with him.

The situation got so heated that Czarnik summoned a building security officer.

During the April 2015 election, three of the board’s five seats were up for grabs. Trunco, Czarnik and Patrick Byrne ran for two four-year terms, while Zalinski ran against Neil Cohn for a two-year term. All three incumbents kept their seats.

Trunco served as a volunteer soccer coach at the Niles Park District prior to his campaign, as well as on the Skomor Soccer Club’s Board of Directors. At the time,

Trunco told the Bugle that he felt the board could benefit from having someone with his experience and level of involvement in park district programs.

Since the election, he was appointed to the village of Niles Community Relations Commission.

When Trunco addressed the park board on July 20, he said a number of residents spoke to him in his capacity as a commission member and raised concerns about the district’s hiring practices. Trunco added that he wasn’t speaking for the commission as a whole.

million. How do we justify this to our residents.”

LoVerde said the $6.5 million figure was “inadvertently” released to the public. He said it was based on the costs of the construction of the Golf View Recreational Center.

“When we looked at Caldwell Avenue [site], someone decided that $6.5 million sounds like a good number,” LoVerde said. But, [the site] is twice the size.”

That is why $13 million would have been a better number, LoVerde added. The district also budgeted about $335,000 for exteriors, flooring and furnishings. The park district then tried to figure out ways to reduce the costs, eventually bringing it down to $11 million.

When Trunco asked if there was a way to ensure that the number wouldn’t go up again, LoVerde said that there was no way to guarantee that. “In construction, it’s very difficult to estimate where [the cost] is going to go,” he said. “We believe $11 million is a good estimate, but we can dig in there and get an enviromental problem.”

LoVerde noted that the park district plans to use the subcontractors that normally work on school projects. Because such projects dry up once the fall semester starts, he believes the park district would get good prices.

The board is expected to bid out the sub-contract work some time in August.

In May, long-time director Joe LoVerde announced that he was planning to retire. Since then, the district decided that he would stay on until Sept. 6, at which time Niles Park District Finance Director Tom Elenz would step in to take his place.

Trunco noted that the decision was made in closed session, and asked whether there was any attempt to find another candidate.

“Was there a job posting,” he asked.

Park district attorney Dan Shapiro said the board had a long, vigorous discussion about Elenz’s appointment during the closed session.

However, Trunco said the decision was a symptom of a larger problem.

“Many people who I know in the community have kids who applied for [summer] camp positions,” he said. “Most of which never received a phone call or even came in for an interview. Yet, we have a good number of employees within the Niles Park District who are children of the sitting commissioners.”

Trunco also complained about the

park district’s athletics department, saying there was one employee in particular he had an issue with.

But before Trunco mentioned the employee by name, commissioners interjected and urged him not to mention the name in a public forum.

“I don’t think we should talk about staff members’ personal lives,” Genualdi said.

The subsequent exchange got heated, with Czarnik telling him that his time to comment was over.

Trunco responded by saying the park board didn’t have any specific limits on public comments.

“You have no respect for anyone, Czarnik,” the former candidate exclaimed at one point.

But by 2013, North Capital decided to demolish the building in order to make way for a development that would include retail space, as well as a new hotel.

Because the development wouldn’t include any permanent residents, the village of Lincolnwood agreed to split the TIF funds between District 219 and Lincolnwood School District 74. But when the Purple Hotel was demolished, no replacement was built.

According to a memo submitted to the District 219 Board of Education by assistant superintendent of finance and business Eric Trimberger, the village of Lincolnwood informed both school districts that there is a new mixeduse redevelopment proposal that includes a residential component.

According to the village, the initial TIF agreement was getting in the way of that development becoming a reality.

Trimberger wrote that, “as a show

of good faith,” the village is ending the Touhy-Lawndale TIF five years early, which would provide the district $145,000 in extra tax revenue.

During the District 219 Board of Education meeting, he advised board members that the district usually tries to work together with municipal governments in situations like this.

“We try to work cooperatively with all municipalities [within District 219],” Trimberger said.

Under the new agreement, District 219’s share of the TIF fund would be calculated based on how many students live within the TIF. Board member Linda Lampert noted that, while the agreement decreases revenue, a vacant lot isn’t generating any property tax revenue for the district and anything that gets the development going will help them in the long run.

“Keep in mind, there is nothing there [right now],” she said.

The rest of the board agreed, voting unanimously to approve the agreement.

He elaborated on his earlier allegations, saying that Zalinski’s three children worked for the district, and Czarnik’s daughter was a camp counselor.

Czarnik confirmed that his daughter does work as a junior camp counselor during the summer, but dismissed Trunco’s allegations.

“I don’t think he has the facts straight,” Czarnik said.

Trunco said that, while he liked the park district, be believed that the current leadership has been around

for too long. Unless applicants are connected, he said there was no way to get park district jobs. “[The jobs] are going to friends or family, and nobody else can get the jobs,” Trunco said, adding that it wasn’t just him who had these concerns. “The reason why I spoke today is because, as member of the Community Relations Commission of the village of Niles, those were concerns that were brought to me by the taxpayers.”

As for Czarnik, he told the Bugle that he was simply angry with Trunco talking about a specific employee.

“I just don’t like when something is brought against personnel, the employees,” he said. “This isn’t the place. You don’t attack personnel.”

‘The prevalence of hearing loss almost doubles with each age decade of life’

Nearly two-thirds of adults over age 70 have hearing loss that doctors consider “clinically meaningful.” I n plain English that means as people age, they are likely to become hard of hearing. Many of those people, however, don’t get the help they need, often because they simply cannot afford it.

“The prevalence of hearing loss almost doubles with each age decade of life,” says Dr. Frank Lin, an otolaryngologist at Johns Hopkins University, but for older people, he adds, “there are multiple barriers that prevent individuals from getting their hearing loss addressed.”

Lin spoke about the subject to a group of journalists in a recent phone conference sponsored by a Washington, D.C., advocacy group the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare.

He is a co-author of a June report issued by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine that recommends better access and support for treating hearing loss.

Lin told the group that although hearing loss is a normal part of the aging process, “hearing care is inaccessible” to many seniors.

He said studies over the last five years have shown that such loss “can increase the risk of cognitive decline.”

Using data from a longitudinal study (one that tracks data from the same people repeatedly over many years or decades) that began in 1958, Lin and his colleagues at Johns Hopkins found that those with hearing loss had a higher probability of developing dementia.

The more severe the loss, the more likely the dementia.

That isn’t the only problem.

Hearing loss is also associated with a greater risk for falls and other accidents because a person can’t hear traffic or a smoke alarm in their home.

often feel isolated and shun normal social contacts because they can’t hear others speak.

That’s a blow to productive aging, the goal promoted by the late Dr. Robert Butler, a well-known gerontologist who fought against ageism.

So why, then, is hearing care so inaccessible?

Cost may be the major barrier.

Nearly all expenses for hearing care must be paid out-of-pocket, and for many seniors on fixed incomes, that’s sometimes hard to do.

Lin told me the average cost of two hearing aids is $4,700 and rarely covered by insurance.

Medicare doesn’t cover hearing exams, hearing aids, or exams for fitting hearing aids.

It does, however, cover diagnostic hearing and balance exams but only if your doctor orders those tests to see if you need medical treatment.

In that case, if a person has traditional Medicare and a Medicare supplement policy, often called a Medigap, he or she has to pay 20 percent of the approved amount for the exam. Some Medicare Advantage plans may include hearings tests as part of the extra benefits they offer.

The National Committee and other advocacy groups are campaigning to add a hearing benefit to Medicare’s benefit package.

Their campaign is bucking the trend in Washington to cut Medicare benefits

by raising the age of eligibility, making richer seniors pay more, and requiring those with traditional Medigaps to have more skin in the game.

Politicians have already begun redesigning Medigap policies to make seniors pay more out of pocket for their care.

Beginning in 2020, for example, insurers will not be allowed to sell Medigap policies that cover the deductibles for Medicare Part B that pays for physicians’ services, lab tests and hospital outpatient care.

The theory behind this shift is that seniors will pay more and the government less thus helping to save Medicare money.

I asked Dan Adcock, the National Committee’s policy director, about the chances of adding benefits to treat hearing loss, or for that matter vision and dental care, when the focus has been on cutting benefits of all kinds.

He said one major source of funds to pay for hearing aids could come from lowering the price of what Medicare pays for drugs.

The 2003 legislation that gave seniors a drug benefit also prohibited the government from negotiating prices for the drugs it buys. Drug makers strongly oppose such negotiations.

Adcock said he remains hopeful.

If better hearing means a decrease in dementia, falls and accidents, fewer people would need treatment for those conditions. The savings could potentially “pay” for the hearing aids, he said.

For now, though, seniors and their families are on their own.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine offer an Action Guide for Individuals and Families that suggests actions people can take to prevent hearing loss and strategies for families to cope with it when it occurs. It’s available at www. nas.edu/hearing.

Every day, trains on Amtrak’s Hiawatha route race through Niles and Morton Grove as they make their way between Chicago and Milwaukee.

But, there was something different about the train July 16. A silver-green car with a dome in the middle was attached to Amtrak’s standard silver passenger cars and front locomotive.

Dubbed “Stampede Pass” by its owner, Chicago-based company Paxrail, the railcar featured an elegant lounge, a kitchen, three bedrooms with their own bathrooms and showers, and a dining space beneath the dome that gave passengers an almost 360-degree view of the surrounding landscape.

Trips made July 16 marked the first time the Stampede Pass traveled along the Hiawatha route, but Paxrail is hoping to have more trips along the route in the future. Ultimately, it hopes to team up with Amtrak to launch a regular first-class service for business travelers who may be looking for something more upscale than the current Amtrak businessclass accommodations.

Hiawatha trains offer the most frequent Amtrak service in the Midwest, making five trips in each direction per day. Each trip takes a little over 90 minutes.

Service on this route is co-funded by the states of Illinois and Wisconsin, but it lacks some of the features common on statefunded services, including business-class seats and a cafe car where passengers can buy drinks and snacks.

It does retain some other amenities, including on-board Wi-Fi, power outlets at

every seat, and the option to bring bikes and golf bags on board.

Riding the Stampede Pass is an altogether different experience.

According to Paxrail owner James Evenson, the railcar was originally a coach car with seats on the dome level and the main level.

Built in 1954, it was used on the ChicagoSeattle North Coast Limited train operated by the Northern Pacific Railway. When Amtrak took over most inter-city passenger train service in 1971, the Stampede Pass became part of the newly formed federal company’s fleet. In 1995, it was sold off to an East Coast railroad executive, who had it remodeled into what it is today.

Paxrail bought the car last year. Since then, it has been renting it out for excursion and private events. The car has been certified

by Amtrak, so it can be attached to all of its trains.

And, Evenson said the company has partnerships with a number of railroad excursion operators, which means the Stampede Pass can go on both short and long trips throughout the county.

Currently, Paxrail is focusing on the Chicago-Milwaukee corridor.

Evenson told the Bugle that market research indicates that Hiawatha gets about 400 business travelers each day. Those travelers, he said, would be willing to pay more for amenities the Amtrak train doesn’t provide.

service on the Hiawatha, and we’d like to bring that,” he said. “We’d like to do a regular service on weekdays, once we’ve proved ourselves to Amtrak.”

Evenson said the service wouldn’t use the Stampede Pass for that service. Instead, it would rely on two “art deco-style” railcars, which would still need to be certified by Amtrak.

While Paxrail would be the first to propose this type of service, it isn’t entirely without precedent. Pullman Rail Journeys, a subsidiary of the Iowa Pacific railroad company, offers trips between Chicago and New Orleans, attaching its own railcars to the city of New Orleans Amtrak trains. The company reasoned that customers would be willing to pay more for additional amenities. So far, the business plan seems to be working for Pullman Rail Journeys.

If launched, Paxrail’s Chicago-Milwaukee service would make the same stop as the Hiawatha trains to which it’s attached. So, Niles and Morton Grove passengers who opt to take the ride would need to board the train at the Glenview train station.

In order to build up its reputation with Amtrak, Paxrail is planning to try to schedule as many private trips running along the corridor as possible.

“We’d like to connect to event planners who [are] looking for something unique for their clients,” said Evenson, adding that the company is open to corporate events, charity functions and parties, as well as longer day trips and excursions.

The July 16 trips were the first real test for what customers could expect. The Stampede Pass took three round trips – one in the morning, one in the afternoon and one in the evening – picking up and dropping off passengers at the same stops as Hiawatha.

The Bugle rode along on the morning trip, which offered passengers freshly cooked complimentary breakfast during the first half of the trip, as well as coffee, soft drinks and alcoholic beverages at any time.

According to host Kat Brightwell, Paxrail planned to serve freshly cooked lunch and dinner during the later trips.

On the way back from Milwaukee, Robert Tabern and his wife, Kandace, who are co-heads of the Rail Rangers nonprofit organization, pointed out landmarks, historical sites and other interesting things outside the window. While passing through Niles, they pointed out the village’s iconic replica of the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Evenson directed attention to the railcar’s dome, and, for many passengers that spoke to the Bugle, that was one of the trip’s highlights.

With windows reaching to the ceiling, it offered an almost 360-degree view of the surrounding landscape.

Amtrak currently has only one dome care, which it sends to certain routes during the fall season. Long-distance trains that use twostory Superliner cars also have observation cars that offer a similar experience. These cars feature large windows that curve upward without extending across the entire ceiling.

For Evanston resident Mark Perelman, a chance to ride a railcar with a dome was enough to get him on board.

“It’s very rare that you get to ride dome cars, because Amtrak only has one,” he said. “The scenery between Chicago and Milwaukee isn’t the best, but it’s nice.”

Beth Reilly, of Downers Grove, found out about the trip because she was friends with James Evenson’s wife, Kim. Mrs. Evenson posted about the trip on Facebook, and Reilly and her husband, Joe, decided to go on the trip with their three young children.

“It’s amazing,” she said. “And, the view is splendid.”

Her husband agreed.

“I rode a dome car back in the 70s, as as small child,” Mr. Reilly recalled. “So, it’s been a while. It’s nice.”

He also compared the ride favorably, compared with regular Amtrak service.

“Mostly on Amtrak, you feel like you’re flying coach,” he said.

Seth Reynolds, of Evanston, has been a fan of the railroads since he was a young child. During the course of trip, he pointed out various railroad branches and talked about the many facets of railroad operation. When asked if he enjoyed the trip, Reynolds didn’t miss a beat.

“It was an amazing trip with a wonderful crew,” he said. “[It has been] a great experience.”

Galena golf course one of the top in the state

For a few years I had wanted to play The General at Eagle Ride Resort and Spa in Galena.

It is safe to say I was not disappointed.

Just looking out at the first hole from the clubhouse I was excited with what was in store.

My favorite courses are ones with great elevation changes and scenery and this no doubt fit the bill.

The first hole started with a sharp elevation change, a drop from the tee box to the fairway, allowing the hole to play much shorter than the 378-yard gold tees, which are the three-star ratings out of four. It would be the best hole at many golf courses, but here, it was just one of the better ones.

Next was a 528-yard par-5, which played mostly straight but played to a tight fairway all the way to the green. The third hole is a 143-yard downhill par3 with water to the right and bunkers to the front and left, making it a much harder hole than the scorecard suggests.

A short fourth hole at 354 yards is a slight dogleg left, with bunkers guarding a straight shot to the right side of the fairway.

That is followed by the hardest hole on the front nine, a 418yard par-4. It is a dogleg left with trees lining the dogleg on the left

and a tree that can get in the way of an approach shot to the right.

There is a gully below the tree, meaning balls that hit the tree could be in big trouble.

The sixth hole is a dogleg right par-5 at 479 yards, with water guarding the dogleg. Long and brave hitters may be able to cut off the dogleg a bit to make the green reachable in two.

A slightly uphill par-3 seventh hole is just 130 yards, but has trouble all around it in long, thick grass.

The eighth hole is a 306-yard dogleg right par-4 with a treelined to the right of the dogleg. A safe play out to the left makes the hole much longer, while a gutsy play to the right of the fairway can lead to a short wedge into the green, which is guarded by a stone wall behind the green, adding to the character.

The front nine finishes with a 390-yard par-4, which is uphill and plays longer than the distance. It also takes a good hit to get it to the fairway over some unplayable grass and a long approach shot is played to a green covered by a bunker.

The back nine starts with a 361-yard par-4, which doglegs right. Both sides of the fairway are lined with trees. No. 11 is a large drop par-3 at 152 yards. It plays much less than that due to the sharp drop from the tee to the green.

Miller wins 22nd Illinois Women’s Open Stephanie Miller was near perfect last week as she claimed the title at the 22nd annual Phil Kosin Illinois Women’s Open at Mistwood Golf Club in Romeoville.

The University of Illinois senior to be tallied 43 straight bogey free holes before collecting a bogey on No. 17 on the final day, wrapped up her first tournament win since 2013.

“I guess I couldn’t be perfect all day,” Miller joked. “But I did get away with a lot. On 13, I hit it way right into the high grass and found it, thankfully. Then popped it out in front of the green and made an up and down and got away with that, so I was happy with the par there. I just tried to play well coming in, but I got a little excited on the parthree, but that’s all right. I was just thinking about one shot at a time.”

The two-time IHSA Class AA champion while at Stevenson fired three rounds of 69 to finish with a 9-under par 207, three shots better than Indiana resident Kelly Grassel, who also ended her tournament with 38 bogey free holes.

“This week was a great experience,” Grassel said. “I was pretty consistent. This course has some tricky holes, but it’s not too long and the greens were holding, so it was very scorable this week. I’m definitely happy with the string of no bogeys.

I missed a few greens but was able to get up and down, so I was happy about that.

“This was an encouraging

week for my game. I started making a few improvements and was hitting it a little bit farther, so to see that out on the course was encouraging, however there was a time when I was hitting further than I usually did and I wasn’t sure which club to play.”

Miller also battled with her playing partner, Brooke Ferrell, who was tied for the lead after both the first and second round.

Ferrell was only one shot behind Miller heading into the stretch run, but a nine on No. 15 dashed her hopes of winning this year after finishing second last year.

“Brooke was a great partner and is so nice, and her game is awesome,” Miller said. “She hit some great shots, and at the beginning, we were neck and neck. She would make birdie and I’d make birdie, and we had one on hole five where she stuck it to six inches and I stuck it to 2 1/2 feet, and we were like, ‘We’re here to play.’ Playing with a good partner is good for your game since you take your game to the next level and hit some good shots.”

Miller hit some of her best shots during the three hole stretch from holes five to seven where she strung together three straight birdies.

The top low professional score was former University of Illinois golfer Ember Schuldt, who carded a 71 on the final day and finished in fifth place with a two-under par 214.

The lone Voyager Media area athlete to make the cut was Bolingbrook resident Jessica Yuen, who finished tied for 23rd with a 230.

Prime weekday fees are $135, so you will want to be sure to let the views sink in. In the evenings the rates can get down to $60, which is too good to pass up.

We played in the late afternoon and only saw one group the entire time. When the sun came out on the back nine the course felt as peaceful and beautiful as any course I have ever played.

There was even a hot air ballon which flew over us on the 18th

hole as the sun was beginning to set, adding to the aura.

This course is a must play for all levels of golf fans. It isn’t quite as hard as anticipated, so even the novice can come out and enjoy his or her round. It is definitely worth full price to take a yearly trip out there. I imagine fall rates would be cheaper and I can only imagine how great it would be to play the course in the fall.

The best hole on the course, in my opinion, is next. A par4, 341-yard hole that is straight

downhill. It is such a deep drop that the green is nearly reachable off the tee. From the tee you can also see some great scenery off in the distance from the course and beyond. It is truly a muchsee hole.

The 15th hole is 170 yards that has a bunker in front of it. That is followed by a 380-yard hole that doglegs left and plays uphill to the green.

The closing holes feature a

tight, 361-yard hole and a 500yard par-5 with split fairways to land your second shot.

Perhaps the most surprising part of the course were the slow greens.Typically at a course like this the greens are lightning quick, but this wasn’t the case.

However, there were many slopes on both the greens and fairways that made things difficult, helping to contribute to a 136 slope from the gold tees.

Stay the course Adequately cover family needs, then you can always drop the insurance policies Dear Dave, Our daughter is a special needs child, who doctors say will live about half as long as the average adult. There’s also a good chance she will be under our care her entire life.

We just finished Baby Step 3 of your plan, so we have all of our debt paid off except for the house, and we have an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses saved. We have health insurance, too. However, we were wondering how the situation with our little girl affects retirement planning and college funding?

Jonathan Dear Jonathan, I know this may sound strange, but the situation with your daughter really doesn’t affect things all that much. The only real difference is that it sounds like you’ll be responsible for your sweet daughter for the foreseeable future — not just until she’s 18 or 21.

If you don’t already have it, you and your wife should both buy 10 to 12 times your annual incomes in term life insurance. Make sure the money from the policies is set up to go into a special needs trust that would be managed for her care. That way, your baby will be taken care of in the event something unexpected happens to you.

Otherwise, just keep following my plan. Baby Step 4 means you start putting 15 percent of your income into pre-tax retirement plans, like Roth IRAs and mutual funds. Baby Step 5 is college funding, if that’s a consideration for her, followed by paying off your home early. Then, of course, the last Baby Step is building wealth and giving.

Financially speaking, you’re looking at filling a need in the event of your deaths. This should be covered by life insurance or investments. If you reach a point where your investments are substantial, and money from those things can adequately cover her needs and the needs of your family, then you can always drop the insurance policies.

Dear Dave, My husband has his own oneman painting business, and I help him with the books. We were wondering how you know when it’s time to implement a price increase.

Also, what should the increase be?

Lauren Dear Lauren, I grew up in the real estate business, so I’ll use the apartmentcomplex model as my example. If your building is completely full, then it’s time to raise prices a little bit until you have a vacancy. In this type of scenario, you want a healthy level of vacancy, meaning you’re always going to be losing some customers as you go up in prices.

In your husband’s case, if he’s booked through the end of the month, he’s way underpriced. Just keep on turning in your bids, and don’t make a big deal about things.

It isn’t like a tenant, in your case, where you’re going back time and time again except in rare cases.

You might start with a 10 percent increase, and see what happens for a while. If that goes well, wait a bit and raise them another 10 percent.

There are only so many hours in a day this guy can work, so the only other option is to take on staff. But before I start staffing, I’m going to raise prices and cut the number of customers that way. In most cases with the construction business, if you show up when you say you will, complete the job when you say you will, and you do high quality work, there’s almost no ceiling on what you can make!

Native named ‘Rising Star’ by state defense attorney association Elizabeth Barton receives Illinois Association of Defense Trial Counsel Rising Star Award A former Park Ridge resident and graduate of Maine South High School is a 2016 recipient of the Illinois Association of Defense Trial Counsel Rising Star Award.

Elizabeth Barton received the award during the organization’s 52nd annual meeting, held June 24 in Chicago.

Barton distinguished herself through her involvement with the IDC Young Lawyers Division.

In addition, she has been actively involved with the IDC Board of Directors, Spirit of the Season fundraiser, coordinating seminars

for young lawyers, and writing for the IDC Quarterly.

“I am honored to be receiving such an important award as a Rising Star,” she said. “I am grateful for the recognition and for what the IDC has given me.

Matus was born in Minsk, Belarus, in 1928, the son of Polish Jewish parents who had fled to Russia after the 1917 revolution to build the socialist utopia. When Germany invaded in June 1941, Matus, his mother, and his older brother tried to escape eastward. They ran for a train and the two sons were able to jump aboard; when the mother couldn’t make it, Matus jumped down and stayed with her. Meet Matus to hear his unbelievable story. New Summit executive director takes the reins at Park Ridge retirement community Wilson Anhar brings 12 years experience in senior care management The new executive director at the Summit of Uptown says he measures his success in smiles.

“When the people who call Summit home are smiling, and their loved ones are smiling when they come to visit, then I know I’m doing something right,” said Wilson Anhar.

Anhar brings 12 years experience in senior care management and 19 years in hospitality management to his new head role at the Park Ridge retirement community.

Most recently he was executive director at Sunrise Senior Living in Highland Park.

When he compares his experience in hospitality management to his experience in senior care management, he notes one important difference.

“When you are running a hotel, you touch people one day at a time,” Anhar said. “When you work in senior care, you are involved in their lives. It’s a place where you can really make a difference.”

According to Anhar, he was most impressed with the longevity of the staff at Summit.

“In the field of senior care, if someone tells you that they have been at the same job for two years, that’s a long time,” he added. “But when I met with the Summit,

I learned that the entire staff from custodial to management represents 200 years of tenure.

“That’s why Summit has always enjoyed the wonderful reputation that it has.”

Anhar said he has big shoes to fill, but added that he “will continue to build on that legacy.”
