Oakton kicks off 50th anniversary celebration More than 300 attend beginning of year-long celebration Oakton Community College’s 50th Anniversary Opening Ceremony brought more than 300 local dignitaries, alumni, friends, students, trustees and current and former employees to the college’s Des Plaines campus June 25 to celebrate the college’s role in serving the community over the last 50 years. “The theme for our golden anniversary revolves around three important words: pride, passion and promise,” said President Joianne Smith, Ph.D. “As we launch our year-long celebration today, we boldly step into this moment with a strong sense of pride. Looking back, there have been many changes to the district and to the college since Oakton’s launch in 1969. Yet our mission of extending affordable, quality education throughout a lifetime of learning to anyone who seeks it has remained steadfast.” At the event, the college received a multitude of congratulatory notes from legislative leaders representing Oakton’s district, which encompasses 109 square miles, including all or part of 17 towns and villages. Dignitaries in attendance included Illinois State Senators Laura Murphy and Laura Fine, Village of Mount Prospect Mayor Arlene Juracek and George Van Dusen, mayor of the Village of Skokie. “I want to congratulate Oakton for all the work it has accomplished over

Also, Illinois ranks first in the nation for students who start at community college and go on to earn four-year degrees. Oakton should be applauded for its effort in making this happen.” Graduates like Deerfield resident Steve Gassman, former editor of the student newspaper for two years (1982-83), returned to join in the festivities that included the opportunity to share video reflections and mes-

STATE NEWS

State takes action to make vaccines more easily available for low-income children Vaccines to be provided for Children s Health Insurance Plan and Vaccines For Children SPRINGFIELD - In its ongoing commitment to increasing vaccination rates across the state, the Pritzker administration is taking action to make vaccines more easily available for low-income children. The Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS) and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) are announcing the availability of vaccines for children covered under the Children’s Health Insurance Plan through the Vaccines For Children (VFC) program. Ordering vaccines for CHIPeligible children through the VFC program will increase the number of providers for these vital services and help ensure vaccines are more readily available for low-income children. “Illinois is committed to every child being vaccinated,” said IDPH Director

Dr. Ngozi Ezike. The VFC program is a federally funded program that provides vaccines for children whose parents or guardians may not be able to afford them. Children who are eligible for the VFC program are younger than 19 years and are either Medicaid-eligible, uninsured, underinsured, or American Indian or Alaska Native. CHIP is a partnership between the federal and state governments that provides low-cost health coverage to children in families that earn too much money to qualify for Medicaid. Families with children under age 19 who meet insurance and income requirements are eligible. The programs were separated in 2016, under the previous administration, and vaccines for children cov-

ered by CHIP were no longer able to be ordered through the VFC program. Under the new administration, HFS and IDPH have been working together to rejoin the programs and increase provider participation so that all children in Illinois will be able to receive needed vaccines. It is essential to protect children against serious illness by having them vaccinated before they are exposed to potentially life-threatening diseases. The newly rejoined program will allow providers to obtain vaccines for CHIP children via the VFC program without having to buy vaccines from private sources at market cost and be reimbursed later. As more physician practices, Federally Qualified Health Centers, health departments, and other providers across the state transition into the newly rejoined program, children covered by CHIP will also be able to get their CDC recommended vaccines in their medical home.

sages of congratulations to the college. Gassman, who works in public relations, credits Oakton for helping to launch his career: “I’m proud to be back where I got my feet wet. Oakton gave me a great opportunity to be successful. It means a lot to be here tonight to celebrate Oakton pride.” Oakton opened its doors to 832 students in 1970. The original “campus” consisted of four factory buildings in Morton Grove. Besides campuses in Des Plaines (1600 E. Golf Road) and

Skokie (7701 N. Lincoln Ave.), Oakton offers courses and programs at over 200 off-site locations in the community. Distance-learning options include more than 90 online courses annually. Today, the college serves nearly 510,000 residents and 28,000 businesses as a resource for higher education, workforce training and lifelong learning. At the event, Smith shared points that speak to the college’s collective impact including: Over the past 50 years, more than 507,000 students have attended Oakton through credit and continuing education classes; More than 30,000 graduates have earned over 39,000 degrees and certificates while attending Oakton; Oakton students have gone on to study at prestigious institutions, including Georgetown, Dartmouth and Harvard; and Oakton now offers more than 80 programs of study. “I extend my personal invitation to each of you to take full advantage of this gem we have built together, knowing that we will continue to lean into — and live into — the promise that our founders envisioned 50 years ago,” Smith said. “I can’t wait to see what’s in store for Oakton over the next 50 years.”

Help friend with what he needs, not what he wants Q. I’m on Baby Step 2 of your plan, and I’ll be debt-free except for my home by the end of the year. I have a friend who is very irresponsible with his money, and he often asks to “borrow” cash between paychecks. I don’t want to be cruel, but things are getting out of hand with his requests for money. A. I think you should tell your friend the truth. Let him know you’ve decided to get control of your money, you’re trying to get out of debt and you simply don’t have cash to spare. Be sure to do it with a kind spirit, but sometimes you’ve got to look at the big picture in these situations. You’re not really helping someone if you participate in their misbehavior and enable bad habits. Sometimes, you have to love someone enough to tell them no. Let your friend know how hard

you’re working to get your finances in order and how it’s making a big difference in your life. Maybe you could offer to show him the steps you’ve taken so far, and let him know he could be successful doing this, too. You might even try to show him how to make a monthly budget and act as his guide and accountability partner if he’s willing to accept this kind of help. In some cases, helping someone means offering what you know they need instead of what they want. But you’re never really helping someone who’s incompetent with money by simply handing them cash.

GLVC sponsors bowling along with lacrosse beginning this season

A day after revealing women’s lacrosse as its 23rd sponsored sport, the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) announced Wednesday it will begin sponsoring women’s bowling as its 24th sport for the upcoming year. The inaugural season of GLVC women’s bowling will feature seven institutions, including full-time league members Drury University, Lewis University, Maryville University and McKendree University, as well as associate members University of Central Missouri, Lincoln University and Upper Iowa University. Five of the seven aforementioned programs – Central Missouri, Drury, Lincoln, Maryville and McKendree – competed under the banner of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) over the course of the last three seasons. McKendree has reached the final match of the Intercollegiate Team Championship in each of the past three seasons. Under the direction of head coach Shannon O’Keefe, the Bearcats earned the national title in 2017, scored a runner-up finish in 2018, and was edged 3-2 in the 2019 title match by Robert Morris University (Ill.) this past April. One month prior to nationals, McKendree swept Central Missouri 4-0 to claim its second consecutive MIAA Championship.

Central Missouri made a spirited run at the 2019 MIAA Championships as the Jennies won four straight elimination games before falling to McKendree in the final. It was the third Championship in a row that Central Missouri and McKendree faced off for the MIAA crown. Head coach Ron Holmes will be entering his 20th season in 2019-20, having earned the 2003 Intercollegiate Bowling Championships national title, the 2017 MIAA crown, and three national runner-up finishes (2004, 2005, 2009) throughout his career. Larry Hughes has served as the head coach at Drury for all four years of the program history, including the last three under the NCAA banner. He guided the Panthers to third place at the MIAA Championships in 2017, followed

by a pair of fourth-place results the past two seasons. Drury will compete in the GLVC’s inaugural season in memory of teammate Caroline Conrad, who tragically passed away in an auto accident last week. Maryville placed third at the 2019 MIAA Championship after picking up wins in the first two rounds against Lincoln and Central Missouri. The Saints were then edged 4-3 by McKendree and eliminated 4-1 by Central Missouri. Brandi Branka, who bowled collegiately at McKendree for four years where she was named first team All-American in 2010-11 and 2011-12, has served as Maryville’s head coach since the Saints began competition in the 2015-16 academic year. It was a successful first sea-

son for the Lewis Flyers as they finished the 2018-19 campaign ranked No. 37 in the NCAA RPI, brought home two runner-up trophies from NCAA tournaments and made match play at a United States Bowling Congress (USBC) tournament. Head coach Scott Taylor enters his second season directing the Flyers. Lincoln concluded the program’s fourth season this past year with a sixth-place finish at the MIAA Championships. Brian Lillevold will guide the Blue Tigers into the league as an associate member, which marks the second time Lincoln has competed under the GLVC banner. The Blue Tigers were an associate member in football from 2014-18. Nichole DePaul-Miller will be

leading Upper Iowa in its inaugural season of women’s bowling this year. DePaul-Miller was hired in May 2018 as the first-ever head coach for the men’s and women’s programs, which are the 17th and 18th sport programs for the Peacocks. All seven programs will advance to the inaugural GLVC Bowling Championship, which will take place at Bel-Air Bowl in Belleville, Illinois, March 21-22, 2020. In addition, Quincy University announced last month it will add both men’s and women’s bowling beginning with the 2020-21 academic year. For more information on GLVC women’s bowling, stay tuned online at GLVCsports.com and @ GLVCsports (#GLVCwbowl) on Twitter throughout the year.
