Expo drawing vendors, visitors to Niles June 13 Senior Expo has seminars on Medicare, Alzheimer’s

The annual Active Senior Expo in Niles is June 13. From 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., White Eagle Banquets will play host to seminars, information booths and thousands of local seniors.

This will be the event’s 16th

year. The Expo is managed by Silver Star Expositions, a Lombard-based trade show company.

“The event is dedicated to informing, educating and entertaining senior citizens,” Silver Star owner Bob Cycon said.

“They can find more products and services under one roof than they possibly can on their

own.”

Cycon said Silver Star does six events per year, from March to November. They usually draw about 1,200 to 1,500 seniors. Cycon plans to have 60 vendors at the Niles expo.

“They have entertainment, and then they also have vendors from all different organizations,” Niles Senior Center Program Coordinator Jaymi Blickhahn said.

“They’ve got organizations all from the northwest suburbs that would be able to help (seniors)

in their daily lives.”

The Niles Senior Center has a table at the event. Blickhahn said there’s a wide variety of vendors there.

“Each year it’s been a little different,” she said. “I like meeting all the residents that come through and watching everybody have a good time.”

Cycon launched the Expo years ago, after struggling as a caregiver for his mother and aunt. He still shows up to each event to make sure things run

smoothly.

“There was a need to get information,” he said. “I thought, hey, why not bring this all under one roof.”

The Expo will feature seminars on Medicare and Alzheimer’s, and a presentation by Wells Fargo on retirement savings.

The live entertainment starts at 11:30 a.m.

“For me, it’s very gratifying to see seniors have the opportunity to enhance or enrich their lives,” Cycon said.

Niles initiates textile recycling program Free program saves money by keeping 589 tons out of landfill The Village of Niles is excited to announce the launch of a textile recycling program through Simple Recycling. This program is free to all homes in Niles starting Thursday, June 28.

The textile recycling program provides free year-round curbside textile collection on the same day as recycling pickup day (Thursday or Friday). It follows the same holiday schedule as Groot. The program operates like this: � Simple Recycling mails out a postcard announcing the program, followed by a mailer with two plastic collection bags with instructions to residents for used clothing, textiles, and other small household goods. � Residents then put the bags out on recycling collection day and Simple collects the bags in a Ford Transit van. � Simple Recycling then weighs the material at its Chicago area facility and pays $20 a ton to the Village of Niles. � The program is free, and waste haulers are usually fine with the program because it keeps textiles out of their recycling facilities. � Average annual collection usually starts at seven pounds per household.

Simple Recycling has already launched the program in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Texas, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Min-

nesota. Elgin was the first city to start the program in Illinois, beginning July 10, 2017, and Skokie, Mount Prospect, and Hanover Park have now signed contracts.

Curbside collection is both cleaner and more convenient than drop-off containers. Simple Recycling sends their material to a thrift store facility in Chicago, where roughly 30 percent of the material is destined to local thrift stores, 30 percent is appropriate for overseas markets, and the remainder is shredded into insulation and fiber for industrial wipers. While charities do collect the same type of material, Americans are still throwing away 85 percent of clothing and textiles even with all the charitable donation opportunities, so there is a lot of room for improvement. A contract with Simple Recycling would not prevent any resident from donating material to their favorite charity.

In addition, Simple Recycling is a private company so it cannot give a receipt for a tax deduction; therefore, residents seeking that deduction can still contribute to a charity.

In reviewing the Illinois Commodity/Waste Generation and Characterization Study Update from 2015 that calculates what is in the state’s garbage, Illinois resi-

dents throw away 333,010 tons of textiles a year. At 0.23 perent of the state’s population, that means Niles residents still throw away an estimated 589 tons of textiles a year. At $47.25 SWANCC tipping fee per ton for disposal, diverting 589 tons of refuse from the landfill

each year could save the taxpayers $27,830.25 per year.

This program will help divert materials from the landfill, thereby reducing refuse costs to the Village of Niles and taxpayers. It is voluntary, free and provides an expected/estimated $900 in an-

nual revenue to the Village.

Students collaborate on new product with Creative Promotional Products Niles North students participated in their very own version of ABC’s Shark Tank, the popular television show in which budding entrepreneurs pitch their ideas to industry tycoons, hoping to interest them in investing a stake in their product. Jean Attig’s Business Strategies and Entrepreneurship class at Niles North worked with a team from Creative Promotional Products in Skokie, Illinois to develop new and innovative products to bring to the marketplace.

Creative Promotional Products has been an innovator in their industry due in large part to their philosophy of Constant And Never-ending Improvement (C.A.N.I.). They were one of the first companies to open their own office in Asia back in 2000. They were the first as well to bring inhouse their own graphic design firm, fabrication team, ad agency and print house. This philosophy helps them provide creative and high quality custom creations from small to large-scale projects for their customers.

Using the C.A.N.I. philosophy, Mike Elowe, Creative’s Chief Operating Officer and Vice President reached out to Niles North. The company wanted to work with high school students to introduce them to the industry, as well as to career paths in sales, marketing and branding. Elowe is a Niles North Class of 1984 graduate and he wanted to pilot the program at his former school as a way to give back to the Skokie community.

The Creative team consisted of Dan Granick, President; Jeremy Brick, Vice President of Brand Development; Jonathan Lee, Director of Marketing, and Elowe.

“As a group we realized that none of us were aware of this industry when we were making life decisions such as choosing a college or a first job,” said Elowe. “We thought, why not try to change that? We wanted to empower the students to be able to make something themselves. We wanted to show them that we all have the ability to participate in the creative development process.”

City Hall open Saturday, June 9 for vehicle stickers The Park Ridge 2017-18 city vehicle license/sticker expires on Friday, June 15. The 20182019 stickers must be purchased and displayed by June 15 to avoid receiving a ticket or penalty. Second tier pricing goes into effect June 16 which includes an increase of $25 per vehicle.

City Hall will have limited hours solely for this purpose, Saturday, June 9, 8 a.m. – noon.

Community Health Fair is June 23 at Hodges Park

The assignment for the class was to develop a new product suggestion to solve an everyday problem. At the next meeting, students gave a 2-3 minute pitch, using Kickstarter video pitches as their inspiration. At the third meeting, the Creative team chose one of the product suggestions and students were given the task to create a video for the product, including elements such as the story behind the product, product design, brand name, logo design, pricing strategies, and more. At the fourth and final meeting, students presented their ideas to the team.

On Shark Tank, after the pitches are made, sometimes the sharks venture an offer. Sometimes the pitches go well and the sharks bite. After the students’ presentations, Creative had a proposition for the Niles North class as well.

They offered every student in the class a summer internship to pursue bringing the product to market. Along with that task, students will also explore other opportunities within the company.

“The Creative team was impressed with the students,” said Attig. “I think they didn’t expect the students to be at this level.

However, the kids wanted to be at this level.”

“We were impressed with their overall business knowledge, as

well as their ability to present their product ideas, defend their concepts and creatively develop the basics of a product development plan,” said Elowe. “We were anything but easy on them, and they all stood the test. The students each had some rather creative concepts. But more than that, we were extremely impressed with the research and the thought and effort they put into their presentations.”

The selected concept was a product in the pet industry; the American Pets Products Association estimates sales of pet items to top $70 Billion this year.

“We plan to work with the students to further develop the marketing plan as well as work on product prototypes over the summer. We will develop the product through a crowdfunding method to keep initial start-up and development costs low until the concept is somewhat proven via the crowdfunding vertical,” said Elowe.

The students who participated (and who have accepted summer internships with Creative Promotional Products): Peter Averey Goco, Inanan Nissan, Abdul Feroz, Saly Ezzet, Faraaz Hooda, Seth Israel, Ahmed Irfan, Simon Michalski, Ramsha Siddiqui and Altina Rexhepi.

A health from 9 a.m.-noon, Saturday, June 23, in Hodges Park will showcase a variety of local businesses and organizations that promote health and wellness. The free inaugural health fair is a partnership between the City of Park Ridge Community Health Commission and the Park Ridge Park District. Over 30 businesses are participating, and the event features information about health products and services, health screenings, and fitness demonstrations.

The fair aims to take a holistic approach to health in that it will include resources related to mental health and environmental sustainability in addition to traditional health and fitness information. Touhy Avenue, Niles. Residents of a SWANCC-member community can utilize recycling events held by other member communities.

Electronics and Document Destruction Paper documents must be brought to the event in either paper shopping bags or boxes.

Plastic bags are not accepted.

There is a limit of six paper shopping bags or file-size boxes per vehicle. Paper must be free of contamination, such as metal clips, plastic sleeves, folders, and binders. Muddy Waters wrote the songs of Chicago’s blues legacy

BY JEFF JOHNSON COURTESY OF THE CHICAGO SUNTIMES​ Since June 2017, Muddy Waters’ image has beamed down from a 10-story mural at 17 N. State St. in Chicago. But the king bee of Chicago blues looms even larger over the city with his outsized musical and cultural legacy.

The Mississippi Delta native, born McKinley Morganfield in 1913, followed the Great Migration to Chicago in 1943, where he found stardom with his groundbreaking electric guitar sound and classic bands. He died at age 70 in 1983, but new generations of artists often cite the influence of the six-time Grammy winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, and Waters’ songs such as “I’m Your Hoochie Coochie Man” and “Rollin’ Stone” are used frequently by filmmakers and advertisers.

International tourists visit Chicago to bathe in Waters’ lore, including a visit to his longtime home at 4339 S. Lake Park. There’s not much to see, though, because the house that Tim Samuelson, Chicago’s cultural historian, has called Chicago’s most historic home has stood vacant and in a state of disrepair for many years. Plans are stalled to convert the Kenwood two-flat into a museum or other attraction.

Waters’ bluesman son Larry “Mud” Morganfield, who like his dad is a singer-songwriter-guitarist, spent time at the house, but never lived there. But he quickly rattles off the names of blues stars who did. ​​“James Cotton, Pinetop Perkins, Otis Spann and Little Walter all stayed there, and everyone from Paul Butterfield to Keith Richards went there,” Morganfield said. “I don’t care to have that house. What I care about is the house standing and representing Chicago as the real house of the blues. … Chicago needs to keep this man’s legacy alive.”

Morganfield admitted that being the son of a blues immortal can be a double-edged sword from a career standpoint.

“It’s both a curse and a blessing,” he said. “You have people who say, ‘He sounds like his dad, but he ain’t Muddy.’

Of course I’m not. But I have other people come up and tell me, ‘I had a lump in my throat because you remind me so much of your daddy.’ “

Others who want to walk in Waters’ footprints may visit the Chess Studios (www.bluesheaven.com/ historic-chess-studios. html) at 2120 S. Michigan, where the bluesman recorded many of his bestknown records and rock ‘n’ roll icon Chuck Berry strutted his stuff. Family members of the late Willie Dixon, who penned some of the biggest hits of Waters and fellow Chess artists such as Howlin’ Wolf, operate the studios with their nonprofit Blues Heaven Foundation.

Keith Nelson, Dixon’s grandson, conducts the tours and serves on the Blues Heaven board of directors. He said tours, which cost $10, are given hourly from noon to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. He said between 100 and 350 people tour Chess weekly, and many ask about Waters.

“He’s always a huge part of the legacy,” Nelson said. “Muddy would be your most popular artist. He was your face.

I’m a big comic book fan, and if you had a blues comic book, Muddy would be your Superman.”

Musicians seeking to capture the Waters mojo may soon have their choice of two recording studios at Chess. “We’re planning to put older recording equipment from 1961 upstairs and modern recording equipment in a new studio downstairs,” Nelson said. “Hopefully this project will be done by the end of 2018 or early 2019.”

Carrying on the legacy of Waters and other postwar Chicago blues greats is the mission of current Chicago blues kingpin Buddy Guy, who once operated the late, lamented Checkerboard Lounge on a section of East 43rd Street renamed Muddy Waters Boulevard.

Guy moved Downtown in 1989 with his Buddy Guy’s Legends (www.buddyguy. com), now at 700 S. Wabash.

While sweet home Chicago takes

pride in its reputation as “the home of the blues,” with a lakefront festival that has drawn hundreds of thousands of music lovers yearly since 1984, the city also is a cornerstone of modern jazz.

In fact, Chicago’s jazz fest predates its blues bash by a decade.

King Oliver and Jelly Roll Morton were early stars on the jazz scene, and the immortal Louis Armstrong further popularized the New Orleans sound in Chicago in the 1920s. Later Benny Goodman and a host of fellow big-band leaders swung at ballrooms such as the elegant Trianon in the Woodlawn neighborhood and the Aragon in Uptown.

Today the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (www. aacmchicago.org) guides Chicago jazz in adventurous new directions, and the Green Mill Cocktail Lounge (www. greenmilljazz.com), 4802 N. Broadway, builds on its Prohibition-era tradition.

CHAMPS Oakton Community College wins NJCAA DIII National title in first ever tournament appearance

Even before his team played in the championship game of the 2018 National Junior College Athletic Association Division 3 baseball World Series, Oakton Community College coach Bill Fratto was already getting coaches from all over the country wishing the Owls good luck.

That was because the Owls were facing four-time repeat national champions Tyler Junior College from Tyler, Texas and the rest of the NJCAA baseball community wanted a new champion.

So, Oakton gave it to them.

The Owls had to pry the title out of Tyler’s hands as the Apaches erased a three-run deficit in the ninth inning and two-run leads in the 10th and 11th before Oakton put up three in the 13th to win 14-11.

“We almost gave it away. We had seven errors in the game

and blew leads in the ninth, 10th and 11th, but at the same time, we stayed totally focused even though some good and bad was going on at the same time. Then, sure enough we scored three in the 13th and that was what got done,” said long-time Oakton coach Bill Fratto. “My phone was ringing off the hook prior to the game just wanting Tyler to go down because they had won four in a row and won 28 straight World Series games. They had won 28 straight World Series games until we beat them 3-2 the first time. A lot of junior college coaches and teams were pulling for us to get it done.”

It is the first title for Oakton, who won it in its first-ever appearance becomes just the second Illinois program to capture the DIII title, joining Joliet Junior College, who won in 1994, 2008, and 2012.

Alexander Crinigan pitched a pair of scoreless innings to close out the game and earn the win.

Tommy Gertner got the start for Oakton and went 7 1/3 innings allowing six hits, five runs, but only two earned. He struck out six and walked five.

For the tournament, Gertner tossed 14 1/3 innings with 12 strikeouts and was named Tournament MVP. Nationally this season, Crinigan led NJCAA DIII with 12 wins and was first in strikeouts with 107, four ahead of Gertner who was second with 103.

The Owls, the No. 4 seed in the tournament, finished the season with a school record 44-17 record.

In the title game, as in most of the playoffs, it was Oakton’s bats that paced the team.

In the deciding game, the Owls belted out 23 hits, including a 5-7 game at the plate from Christopher Broccolino, who was 1123 (.478) in the tournament.

Broccolino was joined on the All-Tournament team with Pablo Custodio, Marco Romero and

Dan Sullivan.

“The team caught fire offensively from the regional final to the district final and once we got to the championship round, they were the best in the country by far,” Fratto said. “Region 4 in Illinois is not an easy region to win and that is why we have never had a World Series appearance because it is so difficult to get out of Illinois. So, we were battle tested.”

Oakton averaged 8.6 runs per game as the Owls went 4-1 in the tournament, its lone loss was a 12-2 loss to Tyler in the doubleelimination bracket.

“In the second game we played Tyler, we lost 12-2 and it wasn’t us,” Fratto said. “We were playing uptight, the kids were not the same in the dugout and they were feeling the pressure of facing the four-peat National Champions.

I told them to not feel the pressure, enjoy the pleasure.

“So, they kept saying that in the dugout and no matter the bad that was happening in the ninth, 10th and 11th, they kept scoring. They just wouldn’t quit and they all pulled together as a team.”

the fall made a commitment that they were going to try and get to a World Series and once we got in the playoffs, we were playing

so good, they just started saying, ‘we are going to win this thing,’” he said. “It is a great thing for the school. I have been there so long

– playing there back in the 80s and all the years I put in as head coach – we have had some really good teams. We usually win 30

to 40 games a year, but to have a team go to the national tournament and win it in its first year there is unbelievable.

STACY DEAR STACY, There are lots of guys out there who like shiny toys — especially cars. I get it, because I’m one of them. But these kinds of things are luxuries, and stuff like this should wait until the household and finances are in order. The family should always come first.

Dumping money into this while you two are struggling financially doesn’t make sense. On top of that, it’s causing problems between you two on a deeper level. I’m sure your husband isn’t a bad guy, so try sitting down with him and explaining how it makes you feel. Let him know what it’s doing to your finances and your marriage. You might even write the financial side down, so he can see exactly what kind of shape you two are in and where the money is going.

Once you do this in a kind, but concerned, manner, it may be a real eye-opener for him. On top of that, you might consider giving him a little incentive to get on board with the idea of getting your finances in order. Suggest that once the debt is gone, and you’ve got some savings in place, there might be a little extra cash on hand to help get that car up and running.
