Local 4th of July celebrations, fireworks Surrounding communities host variety of 4th of July events for families

This year marks the 241st year since 13 British North American colonies officially declared their independence – and our readers have plenty of things to celebrate it with.

NILES In the Village of Niles, the celebrations start off with the annual 4th of July Parade. As always, it starts at the Notre Dame College Prep High School at 8:45 a.m. The parade continues south on Ozark Avenue, turning east on Main

Street, then south again on Harlem Avenue, then west on Monroe Street until it reaches Grennan Heights Park.

The fun continues at the park between 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. The Niles Park District will set up a children’s water play area, games and inflatables. Kids will be able to get their faces painted and ride ponies, while adults will be able to try their luck in a community raffle, and the entire family will be able to enjoy the music, as The Mix band performs on the main stage starting 10:30 a.m.

MORTON GROVE As always, the Village of Morton

Grove marks the Independence Day with Morton Grove Days. Running from June 30 to July 4, it will feature carnival rides, food, a beer garden and musical performances.

It will take place at Harrer Park, near the American Legion Memorial Civic Center.

The Opening Day ceremony will take place on June 30, at 7:30 p.m.

Morton Grove Days run from 4-11 p.m. on Friday and Monday, 2-11 p.m. on weekends and 5-11 p.m. on 4th of July itself.

The 4th of July will also have a parade that will start at 2:30 p.m., making its way through the village along Dempster Avenue, between Central and Ferris avenues. And the day will end will fireworks, which, according to Morton Grove Days’ website, will start whenever the sky gets dark enough.

Morton Grove Public Library will be holding a special Red, White and Bicycle event. Children are invited to stop by the library’s bicycle rack on July 3, between 3:30-5:30 p.m. and get supplies to decorate their bikes with patriotic red, white and blue themed colors and accessories.

PARK RIDGE Park Ridge Park District and Maine Township District 207 have teamed up to put on an Independence Day event at Maine East High School. Unlike other events listed in this article, it will take place on July 3. A family-orientad dance party will begin at 6:30 p.m., and fireworks will begin at dusk, around 8 p.m.

But that is not to say that there won’t be any celebrations on the

4th of July itself. Park Ridge Kiwanis Club’s annual 4th of July Kiddies Parade will begin at 9:15 at Hodges Park and run until 10 a.m. All families with kids between preschool and junior high school ages are encouraged to participate. Kids can ride bikes and wagons. According to the event listing, participants are encouraged to decorate and dress up in either traditional 4th of July themes or “Kid Themes.” The later can include characters from popular kids-orientated movies, cartoons and TV shows.

The registration will begin at 8:45 a.m. Kids and their families can win awards for best individual, best group or best costume and/or decoration for their age group. The age groups include preschool and kindegraten, grades 1-2, grades 3-4, grades 5-6 and grades 7-8.

Niles gets new fire chief, police chief

The Village of Niles Board of Trustees officially approved the retirements of Niles Police Chief Dennis McEnerney and Fire Chief Steve Borkowski and appointed former Village of Broadview Police Chief Luis Tigera and Niles Fire District Chief Marty Feld to fill their place.

During the June 13 special meeting, current and former trustees praised the retiring officers for their decades of service and wished them happy retirements. They said that Feld’s experience with the department made them confident that he would be able to handle the job. And while Tigera spent most of his career outside Niles, they looked forward to getting to know him and working with him.

Both of the retiring officers have been with their respective departments for decades. McEnerney joined the police force as an auxiliary officer in 1976, and he was sworn-in as a full-fledged patrol officer two years later. Over the next four decades worked his way up to deputy chief of investigations.

When Dean Strzelecki retired as the Niles police chief in November 2014, he was appointed an interim chief. Mayor Andrew Przybylo made the appointment permanent in June 2015.

Borkowski joined the Niles Fire Department as a paramedic in 1981. He worked his way up the ranks, becoming the fire chief in 2010.

Tigera isn’t entirely a stranger to Niles. He began his career law enforcement career in the village’s police department in 1980, serving as a dispatcher. But he didn’t stay there for long. In 1985, he joined the Illinois State Police, where he served for 26 years. By the time he left the force, he worked his way up to First Deputy Director – which, according to his bio, made him a second-in-command on the force.

In July 2011, he was appointed chief of police in the Village of Broadview.

Feld, on the other hand, stayed in the Niles Fire Department ever since he joined it in 1986 as a paramedic. He served as the district chief since 2004.

Both Borkowski and McEnerney announced their retirements in the beginning of June. The fire chief’s

retirement took effect on June 16, while the police chief’s retirement will take effect on June 30.

Trustee Denise McCreery simply thanked Borkowski, while Strzelecki, who has been elected trustee after he retired, offered a more detailed message.

“I just want to congratulate you, and thank you for your service,” he said. “there’s nothing quite like retirement.”

Trustee Danette Matyas offered her own congratulations.

“Thank you for all your hard work, and you will be missed,” she said. “and I can’t wait until I retire.”

Turning to McEnerney, McCreery said that, because their similar names, she has occasionally gotten messages meant for him – and vice versa – saying that part of her would miss that.

“Thank you so much, [especially] for all of the assistance you’ve given us as new-term trustees,” she said.

“It’s going to be strange not seeing our e-mails mixed up. Don’t be a stranger.”

“We worked together for a long time,” Stzelecki said. “Congratulations, and enjoy it – it’s what you worked for all those years.”

Przybylo recalled that he was proud to be the one to appoint McEnerney chief.

“It was a proud moment for me, to [promote] the guy who made the department so special in so many ways,” he said.

Former trustee Louella Preston said that, while on the board, she got to know both officials, and she thanked them for their service.

Former trustee Chris Hanusiak congratulated McEnerney, adding that he hoped he would enjoy his retirement.

When it came time to appoint their successors, the mayor said that Feld’s resume speaks for itself.

Matyas said she had confidence in him.

“Marty, congratulations,” she said. “You have big shoes to fill, but I know you will step up.”

Stzelecki noted that Feld filled in for Borkowski in the winter of 2017, and based on how he did, he was confident that he would do fine as a full-fledged fire chief.

Turning to the new police chief, Przybylo acknowledged that Tigera wasn’t as well known around Niles as Feld, but said his experience with the new chief was positive.

“Luis, I came to know you four

years ago,” he said. “I thought highly of you then, and still do.”

“I look forward to meeting you professionally,” McCreery said.

“You have amazing in talent in the department.”

Village board allows liquor in billiard parlors The Village of Niles Board of Trustees voted unanimously to create a new liquor license for pool halls and billiard parlors during the June 13 special meeting.

While pool tables are found in many bars, this would be specifically geared toward businesses that are primarily “devoted to the playing of the game of billiards or pool.”

Only one business in Niles currently fits that requirement – KP Billiards, which is located at 7946 N. Waukegan Road, across the street from the village hall - but if any future businesses open, they would be able to apply as well. The officials argued that here are already plenty of bars will pool tables, and having a pool hall serve alcohol wouldn’t be that dramatically different.

In order to get the newly created Class P license, the pool hall has to meet similar requirements as other liquor license applicants. There will be a total of three licenses available, and license holders would need to pay a $1,400 fee. While the license would allow pool halls to sell liquor as late as 4:00 a.m., the Niles Liquor Commissioner would be able to cut it back to 2:00 a.m. or later.

The board also approved a separate resolution to raise the overall cap on liquor licenses to account for the three Class P licenses.

Mayor Andrew Przybylo argued that the Class P license wouldn’t be creating anything Niles hasn’t seen already.

“If anyone has been in a tavern, or any kind of bars, you see games, and, very often, you see pool tables,” he said. “So it’s not so strange.”

Trustee Dean Strzelecki said that Niles surveyed 15 municipalities about where they stood on allowing pool halls to serve alcohol, and only two didn’t.

Przybylo noted that the approval wasn’t necessarily permanent “Should this become a problem, you can be assured that the board will revisit it and make changes,” he said.

According to one story, Shuckburgh wrote the song after seeing the appearance of Colonial troops under Colonel Thomas Fitch, V, the son of Connecticut Governor Thomas Fitch.[2] 20. It wasn’t until the mid-point of the season that Lockport junior Tara McElligott realized what kind of season she was having statistically.

All she did once she realized it was improve and end the season with a .508 batting average, 11 home runs, 17 doubles, a .932 slugging percentage. She scored 56 runs and posted a staggering 73 runs batted in – which is tied for 14th all time in the IHSA for a single season.

“I started watching (the stats) half way through the season. I was looking at my last year’s stats and I had 36 RBI, so I realized what I was putting up was that high,” McElligott said. “At one point, one of my teammates found out I was leading the state in RBI and that was really cool. It was crazy to think about it. I changed my swing and my approach at the plate and then it was the girls in front of me getting on and doing their jobs. I was keeping everything simple and just seeing the middle of the ball and getting my job done.”

Her accomplishments netted McElligott a IHSA Class 4A first team nod as well as earning her the 2017 Voyager Media Player of the Year honors.

“When I look back on the sea-

son, she was a sleeper for a while, then she really got hot in the last half of the season. In that last third of the season, she was on fire,” said Lockport coach Marissa Chovanec. “We had her in the third spot in the order this year and Tara handled the spot well. Some kids in the past have felt the pressure of being the No. 3 hitter and I don’t think that ever crossed her mind. I really felt she stepped up this year on the field and as a leader and she was that calming force a lot of times.”

A catcher by trade, McElligott played her second position of third base the last two seasons before making the move across the diamond to first this year.

“I played third freshman and sophomore year and played first this year. I haven’t played first since eighth grade,” she said. “In the summer, I catch and play third and in college I will catch and play third, but I have always been versatile and my coaches through the years have always told me that knowing different positions will always help.”

Although she still has one more season at Lockport, McElligott has already committed to the University of Illinois-Chicago and she said making that commitment prior to last season helped relax her.

“It was a huge weight off my shoulders,” she said. “I just have to play for myself and my team and we just want to win. I don’t have

Insurance claim versus out-of-pocket payment If you turn in the claim, you’re going to experience a rate increase DEAR DAVE, How do you know when you should file an insurance claim on a homeowner’s issue, versus just dealing with it and paying cash?

BEN DEAR BEN, Basically, it’s when you begin to feel the pain financially. Let’s say you have a $1,000 deductible on your homeowner’s policy. If you have an $1,100 issue, just pay the $100 out of pocket and don’t mess with it. But let’s say you have the same deductible and a $2,000 problem. Depending on things like your overall financial situation, the value of the house, and the cost of the insurance policy, that might just get you to file a claim.

Somehow, lots of people get the idea they can make money on insurance process. You don’t. Insurance companies make money, and consumers pay insurance

companies. You don’t make money on insurance in the long-term.

You may have a situation, once in a blue moon, where you come out ahead on a transaction versus what you paid in. But over the scope of your life, you don’t make money on insurance companies.

The point is this: If you turn in the claim, you’re going to experience a rate increase or cancellation somewhere — at some point — that offsets it. I only turn in substantial claims, meaning claims that are far above the deductible.

—DAVE DEAR DAVE, My in-laws have inherited some money, and they want to invest in real estate. They have offered to help my husband and I buy a home, but they want ownership of some kind as part of the deal. Is this a good idea?

CYNTHIA DEAR CYNTHIA, I’d pass on this offer. It’s not a good deal.

I’m glad they got some money.

I mean, that’s great for them. If they want to do some real estate investing, that’s awesome, too. If

they want to give their kids a gift out of the inheritance money, that would be a very nice, generous thing to do. But no, we’re not going for a deal where they have ownership in your home. Things like that end up messy, and it won’t get you where you really want to be. Even if it does, you won’t like the trip!

If you take a deep look into this, you’ll begin to understand there are some things involved that will change the nature of your relationship with your in-laws. Every time you see them and they see you, they’ll see dollar signs. Dinners together will start to taste different, and they’ll feel different, too.

Protect your relationships and your family, Cynthia. Please don’t do it.
