Skokie magician entertains across the suburbs
Kids and adults are entertained by Niles North grad Gary Kantor BY RYAN OSTRY Bugle Staff
@RyanOstry_BR18 rostry@buglenewspapers.com Just because it’s not David Copperfield, doesn’t mean it’s not magic. Gary Kantor, local magician, paid a visit to the White Oak Library in Romeoville providing families with a special treat. “When I was a kid, I saw a magician do a trick or two and I was just so amazed by it,” Kantor said. “That kind off started my love for magic.” Not only did the talented magician, who is also a social worker, start performing magic at seven years old, but he also teaches magic at more than 135 suburban park districts. A 1985 graduate of Niles North High School, Kantor said the first trick he learned was the ball and vase act. Over the years, Kantor has gained such a positive reputation from local venues, that he has had the opportunity to perform at the United Center and on the Eric and Kathy show. “Working with kids, I just see how excited they all get when I do this stuff and it keeps reinvigorating me,” Kantor said. “Performing has just always made it very fun for me, and I continue to keep loving it.” In a short, hour-long session at the Romeoville Library he wowed the crowd with innovative and mind blowing tricks. the night was the ‘Magic Gary drawing board’, where a face is drawn on the drawing board and it comes alive. “Every time I look back at the board it stops moving, but whenever the kids look at it then it keeps moving again,” Kantor said. “That’s definitely one of my more favorite tricks to do.” Other tricks that were performed were the bottle in the toy trick where one bottle becomes two and two becomes three and so on, mind reading with cards, toy sticks that became flexible and bent among other kid friendly and adult tricks. “Anything with mind reading is something I’ve always really enjoyed because your doing something that is technically impossible, yet you’re making it possible,” Kantor said. With the plethora amount of shows Kantor has done over the years, he said crowd sizes have

the audience reacts.” Kantor gave kids and families the opportunity to stay after the hourlong show was completed to spend time and show some more of his tricks off that kids enjoyed. The talented magician not only tries to provide entertainment to
all kids and families, but he also has a program called “Magic by Mail” where kids can get their very own magic sets for their own personnel use in the mail. For more information about Kantor and his program, you can visit http://www.garykantor.com/

Resident from Ukraine finds groove at Oakton Glenview resident originally from Ukraine finds groove at Oakton For many students, it takes time to adapt to college life – whether it’s handling the rigors of college coursework, becoming familiar to a new campus or even acclimating to a new area. Glenview resident and May 2019 Oakton Community College graduate Vlada Kirilenko can relate to all that after she moved to the United States from the Ukraine. “I enrolled at Oakton four days after I arrived in the U.S.,” Kirilenko recalls. “I didn’t know much about the college at the time, given that community colleges don’t exist in Ukraine. My cousin recommended Oakton and brought me to campus for placement testing and helped me get started.” Despite being new to everything around her, Kirilenko soon found her groove – and more importantly, a community that felt like home. It all began when she started using Oakton’s Language Lab to improve her English and developed a relationship with Beth Wrobel, language lab coordinator. “Beth was extremely helpful and supportive. She was always there to

Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office on ICE Immigration Raids We are deeply concerned that the proposed immigration raids by the Trump Administration will lead to further distrust between immigrant communities and law enforcement. Our office remains committed to ensuring public safety, and these targeted and unfair policies are putting people at risk. ICE’s escalating tactics directly impact victims and witnesses of crime, making them fearful to cooperate and interact in the criminal justice system. ELF selects four Ethical Award winners for 2019 For more than two decades, eighth grade students have vyed for the prestigious honor of being named winners of the Judith L. Snow Ethical Leadership Award, presented annually by the District 64 Elementary Learning Foundation (ELF). Named after a 25-year resident of Park Ridge and
Khurana to learn how to tackle projects and develop leadership skills. “I’m proud of the work I did for SGA and PTK,” Kirilenko says. “My favorite project was raising awareness and funds for the American Federation of Suicide Prevention.” Kirilenko maintained a strong commitment to her studies and gained a deeper perspective on her academic interests. After taking a political science course to fulfill general education requirements, Kirilenko realized she had found her career path. “Now I know that I want to transfer to a four-year university to pursue a political science degree and attend law school,” says Kirilenko, who has been accepted to John Hopkins University. To advance this goal, Kirilenko completed an internship for State Sen. Laura Murphy. “It was great to learn how the government system works,” Kirilenko says. As she looks back on her Oakton experience, Kirilenko has fond memories: “It’s impossible not to develop long-lasting relationships here. Oakton was like a home to me. It’s a small place and easy to get involved, which made my journey easier. Everyone can find a place here and discover their interests.”
dedicated member of the League of Women Voters, the coveted award shines the spotlight on one or more eighth grade students who are respected for leading by example. ELF Trustee Chandra Kearney, Judith Snow Award Committee CoChair for 2019, officially presented the winners to the Board of Education and Superintendent Laurie Heinz at the June 20, 2019 regular meeting. They include: Emerson Middle School — Claudia Domusiewicz and Jenna Pravecek, and Lincoln Middle School - Noah Collins and Colleen Compton. Mrs. Kearney reported that the four students selected for the 2019 awards are “dutiful, honorable and full of integrity.” She noted that: “Their application essays displayed many acts of ethical leadership, and their recommendations from teachers, coaches and other adults prove that they are committed to making the world a better place for others.”

Benet’s Abby Casmere helps Redwings to a state title and earns Player of the Year honors BY MATT LE CREN For the Bugle
@BugleNewspapers sweditor@buglenewspapers.com Faster, higher, stronger. The motto of the modern Olympic Games is an apt description of the performance Benet soccer star Abby Casmere and her teammates gave this season. Casmere, a four-year starter, added muscle in the off-season and was stronger than ever. The senior forward’s versatile skill set, chiefly her ability to postup defenders like a center does in basketball and her accurate passing, allowed speedier teammates like Jamie Cibulka and Mia Tommasone to wreak havoc. As a result, the Redwings soared higher than ever. Casmere tallied a team-high 20 goals to go with seven assists, including one on Cibulka’s game-winning goal in the Class 2A state championship game, to lift Benet to its first state championship in girls soccer. For her efforts, Casmere is the Voyager Media 2019 Girls Soccer Player of the Year. “It’s crazy,” Casmere said after Benet’s 2-1 double-overtime win over Wauconda in the state title game. “I just wanted to do whatever I can to help the team because this is what we wanted from the beginning and look where we are.” Casmere, a Miami of Ohio recruit, never envisioned the success she would have, let alone leading the Redwings to the top,
when she was a freshman. Benet struggled to finish above .500 that season and Casmere was a mere role player in the midfield. But she improved every year while playing a variety of positions. Benet coach Gerard Oconer switched her to center forward this season and Casmere exploded for six goals in the first five games of the season. Opponents began doubleteaming Casmere, who responded by regularly finding her open teammates. The Redwings went 24-3-1, setting a program record for most wins in a season along with a school-record 107 goals. “I think working together and, for the second straight year, most wins in a season. “I think working together, that’s what you’ve got to do,” Casmere said. “Up top, you can’t just try to take it yourself because you’re not going to make 100 percent of the shots you take and you’ve got to have trust in your outside forwards. “I have to trust my outside forwards, my center midfielders and the outside backs and center backs if they go forward.” That unselfish attitude led to many good times for the Redwings and nightmares for opponents. “That was the key,” Oconer said. “Because obviously with her talent, (opponents) are going to collapse on her and so that’s going to free up everybody else.”

‘SOCCER’ FROM PAGE 5 That made Benet’s attack all the more potent, as defenders didn’t know whether Casmere would shoot or pass. “Her shooting ability is crazy,” Benet goalkeeper Eva Frantzen said. “She knows exactly where to place it and she makes it go where she wants to every single time. “And she’s really good at reading defenders and moving off of defenders. She’s gotten way better at that this season.” Though she was determined to improve her game, Casmere didn’t foresee herself scoring 20 goals. “Personally, no,” Casmere said. “I set the goal for myself that I wanted to top last year’s goal (total). “I think I had 11 last year and I told myself at the beginning of the season I wanted to top that, but I didn’t think that I’d have the success that I’ve had.” Casmere scored plenty of big goals this season, including the game-winner against Fenwick in the supersectional, but she will be remembered more for her two assists in the state finals. The first one set up Tommasone to open the scoring in a 3-1 semifinal win over Troy Triad. Casmere also drew the penalty kick on which Kate Flynn scored the goahead goal in the second half. The second came with 6:33 left in the second overtime of the championship game. After receiving the ball just inside the top of the box, Casmere turned a defender and could have taken a shot, but dumped the ball off to Cibulka, who was charging in from the left side. Cibulka, a sophomore, buried a 15-yard shot to put Benet ahead to stay. “It was a great play by Abby to be able to stay strong,” Cibulka said. “She made the right call, knowing I had a better angle.” Casmere has always trusted her ability, but it was her trust in her teammates that allowed the Redwings to reach the top of the mountain. “I was just trying to turn it and Jaimee was right there,” Casmere said of the decisive play. “I gave a little toe poke to her and I’m very glad she finished it. “I had all my faith and trust in her. I knew she was fully capable of doing it and she did the job.” The rest of the All-Area team is:

CHICAGOLAND
NASCAR driver to again honor fallen local soldier
Navy Sergeant Jesse Iwuji, who now drives in the NASCAR Truck Series, will again support the Our Fallen Hero Foundation and the memory of Aaron Toppen at Chicagoland Speedway BY MARK GREGORY Editorial Director
@Hear_The_Beard mark@buglenewspapers.com
In a very short amount of time by industry standards, Jesse Iwuji has risen up the ranks of the NASCAR circuit. From a dream and a decision to follow that dream in January of 2014, he has made his way to the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series, where he drives the No. 34 Chevy Silverado for Reaume Brothers Racing. Iwuji did not dedicate himself to his dream on a race track, he actually came up with it on a ship – a Naval warship at that. When he decided, Iwuji had just completed his second deployment and was thinking of what to do with his life after the Navy. Iwuji entered the Naval Academy from Hebron High School in Carrolton, Texas where he was recruited to play football. A defensive back for the Midshipmen, he earned four varsity letters, playing on teams that combined for a 35-18 record, went to four bowl games and won the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy each of his four seasons. He graduated from the Naval Academy and became a surface warfare officer. “After my second deployment, I had a crazy idea that I wanted to be a professional race car driver, so I started to pursue it. I don’t come from a racing family and I didn’t know where to go or what to do, but I just wanted to find a way in there,” he said. “I met a guy at a car show randomly that was racing late model stock cars and he let me test with his team and I was able to find some money here and there and I started to race with his team, I found sponsors and I started my own business to help fund the team.” Iwuji competed in his first race in April of 2015, raced NASCAR K&N Series all of 2016 and 2017 and the ARCA Series in 2018 and is NASCAR Truck Series this year. And it gets better from there. “We just got approval to move up to the NASCAR Xfinity Series and as soon as we get bigger sponsors, we will be able to make that happen,”
he said. As a member of the United States Armed Forces, Iwuji is using his rise through the NASCAR ranks as a way to bring awareness to fallen heroes. “I am just a regular guy trying to do cool things, but I now have a platform to bring awareness to different organizations and different causes,” he said “When we can use my platform to do that, it is awesome and it is the right thing to do and in the end, when you put good into the universe, the universe puts good back into you. That is what it is all about.” Iwuji will race this weekend at Chicagoland Speedway in the Friday night truck race and will be honoring Mokena native Aaron Toppen, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2014 at the age of 19. Iwuji raced last year in the ARCA Series in memory of Toppen and the Our Fallen Hero Foundation started by his mother, Pam. Last year after the race, Iwuji was able to present Pam with the hood of the car with the foundation logo proudly displayed. “We met Jesse last year and it was an immediate friendship,” Pam said. “We would be happy to work with him as long as he will have us.” Iwuji sees no reason to stop his relationship with the Toppen family or the foundation, and he will again show his support in the Friday night truck race. “We are using the day to honor Aaron and his life and we are bringing awareness of him and our military and what our service members are doing and that they risk their lives every day to insure our freedom. They are out there doing what they are doing for us,” Iwuji said. Pam said Aaron died doing what he loved and that the military was all he wanted to do, following in the footsteps of his grandfathers. “He was going to be army and was going to be infantry and there was no way around that,” Pam said. “He enlisted before he left high school and had to wait until he was out.” After graduation, Aaron went to Fort Benning, Ga. for boot camp. He celebration prior to his departure gives added significance between Pam and Chicagoland Speed-
way. “It was right before he left, he came to Chicagoland Speedway with all of his friends for a race and that was the last time they were all together,” she said. Aaron was killed by friendly fire after deploying late with his unit in March of 2014. “In February of 2014, he was supposed to deploy and, unfortunately, my husband died and he was in Mokena burying his dad while his unit got on the airplane,” Pam said.
“He caught up with them in March and it was the end of May I was on a fishing trip in Minnesota and I got a text message saying he was chosen for a special mission. He was excited to be chosen but little did I know I would come back from my trip and the next night at 11:59, I got the door knock.” After Aaron’s death, Pam and her daughters decided to pay it forward and start the Our Fallen Hero Foundation in Aaron’s memory. “In five short years, we have been
able to send 10 scholarships to the Pat Tillman Foundation, support Fisher House, Puppies Behind Bars, the Lincoln-Way Special Rec,” Pam said of some of the charities the foundation has helped. “Our community has been great support and I don’t know how we would do it without our faith, family and friends. “To be able to pay it forward and remember Aaron’s life and remember all those that made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom gives us great pleasure.”
