Resident flourishes at Oakton through involvement Morton Grove resident, May 2019 Oakton graduate Gabija Ulcinaite thrives at community college For many students, it takes time to adjust to college life – whether it’s adapting to the demands of college coursework, getting to know a new campus or even being completely new to the area. Morton Grove resident and May 2019 Oakton Community College graduate Gabija Ulcinaite knows that feeling all too well after moving to the United States from Lithuania in 2016. Upon arriving in the U.S., Ulcinaite joined an intensive English program at the University of Illinois at Chicago with plans to transfer to a private four-year institution upon completion. However, when it came time to decide on a college, Ulcinaite choose Oakton. Although she now describes herself as an outgoing person, that didn’t come easily. “Initially I held back because I needed time to adapt,” she said. “At first, I only came to campus to attend my classes.” In her first semester, Ulcinaite earned a 3.5 grade point average and completed 12 credit hours, result-

Although initially unfamiliar with PTK, she decided to join the organization. After that, everything changed. “Once I got involved at Oakton, it was my time to shine,” Ulcinaite says. “Joining PTK was the beginning of the best experiences I’ve had in my life.” Ulcinaite credits PTK as a transformational experience that has made

I also learned my strengths and weaknesses as a leader and grew more mature.” After serving as a vice president in her first year at the college, Ulcinaite
was PTK president for the 2018-2019 academic year. Through a campaign to raise awareness about PTK and engaging in several service projects in the community, Ulcinaite and her fellow PTK members successfully earned a five-star chapter rating from the international PTK organization, the highest chapter rating possible. She also served as vice president of
the Illinois Northeastern Region for PTK. This past spring, she was named to the PTK Illinois All-Academic Team. Ulcinaite looks back on these experiences with pride, noting, “We achieved so much together, and now I have friends who will be with me for the rest of my life.” Ulcinaite also served as Student Government Association senator, was nominated for the Student Laureate of the Lincoln Academy of Illinois and earned the International Student Laureate Program award. She will attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison and plans on majoring in both marketing and management information systems. Ulcinaite provides some words of wisdom for incoming students. “Get involved on campus as soon as possible. Make sure you experience college life beyond academics,” she said. “When you get the full taste of college, you’ll grow as a person and as a leader and you will find opportunities. Coming to Oakton was the best decision I ever made. The college has fulfilled all of my academic expectations and made me believe that anything is possible through faith in yourself.”

Scotty McCreery set to play Taste of Joliet Saturday American Idol alum Scotty McCreery will bring his sound to the Taste of Joliet on Saturday, June 22 when he co-headlines with Cole Swindell BY MARK GREGORY Editorial Director
@Hear_The_Beard mark@buglenewspapers.com
Since 2011, Scotty McCreery’s career has been one heck of a ride. The now 24-year-old won Season 10 of ‘American Idol’ at age 16, was dropped from his record label and then debuted his album for his new label at No. 1 on the Billboard Country Charts. The North Carolina native will bring his sound to the Taste of Joliet on Saturday, June 22 when he co-headlines with Cole Swindell. “You can call it co-headlining, but Cole is at that next level of his career. He has had so much success in his career and on radio and the fans love him,” McCreery said. “He has been a buddy to me the last few years. Getting to know him and see what he does, I
can learn a lot from him watching him perform and how he interacts with the crowd. It will be a lot of fun sharing the stage with him.” McCreery is touring on his ‘Season’s Change’ album that dropped in March of 2018. The album has so far produced No. 1 hits ‘This is It’ and ‘Five More Minutes’ — both songs McCreery cowrote. He co-wrote 11 songs on ‘Seasons Change,’ something he is proud of. “The most gratifying thing is when you write a song from personal experience and it means the world to you and you put it out there and are a little vulnerable at that point hoping that people like it as much as you do,” he said. “We are lucky that the last two songs that we put out to radio have gone No. 1 and they have also been

McCreery wrote ‘Five More Minutes’ just weeks after his paternal grandfather, Bill, died at age 86 in 2015 and although he had played it live, it
wasn’t until his latest album that he released the song to fans. McCreery said the reaction was immediate. “I feel like no matter who you are, you have those memories and those moments and those people that you wish you could spend more time
with,” he said. “Every meet and greet people are telling me how much it has helped them through times and who they are thinking of when they hear it. I think it is cool that people are relating to that song as much as they have.” Despite his success, McCreery is still a fan of the show that launched his career and appreciates the growth of the program. “American Idol is an awesome platform, but you can’t really make a career out of that. You have to grind, write your own songs and get on the road and event then, there is no guarantee even if you do all that. I am extremely grateful. It has been eight years and I feel like we are just getting started the last year or two. We are having a lot of fun right now,” he said. “Back when I was on Idol, it was more cover based and I still love the show and watch whenever I can and (runner-up) Alejandro (Aranda) this last season two of three songs on the finale were originals he wrote and I thought that was awesome that they are letting them do that now.”

State’s Attorney seeks injunction for health care discrimination Cook County State’s Attorney Kimberly Foxx seeks preliminary injunction against the Trump Administration to stop Health Care Discrimination CHICAGO – Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx filed a motion June 14 seeking a preliminary injunction to stop the Trump Administration’s Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) from adopting a dangerous Final Rule that would expand the ability of businesses and individuals to refuse to provide necessary health care on the basis of businesses’ or employees’ “religious beliefs or moral convictions.” The motion is supported by declarations of 48 leading public health professionals from states across the country, including John Jay Shannon, M.D., CEO of Cook County
Health. “Many Cook County residents are uninsured or underinsured and rely upon county government to provide critical access to medical care,” said Foxx. “I was elected to protect those who will be exposed to the severe impact from these discriminatory policies and I will use the power of this Office to fight against regulations which restrict access to life-saving medical treatment.” The preliminary injunction seeks to stop the Final Rule from taking effect in July 2019, arguing that it would undermine the delivery of health care
license. If renewing in person, bring your pre-printed renewal application that was mailed to you (make sure all the information is correct and provide any missing information). For more information, please call the Administration Building (847) 588-8000.

Nightly, weekend lane closures on Skokie Highway CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that the resurfacing of Skokie Highway (U.S. 41) from Lake Cook Road to Chantilly Lane, in Highland Park, will require nightly and weekend lane closures, as well as some daytime shoulder closures, starting, weather permitting, Monday, June 17. In order to complete the work, lane closures will occur from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Concrete patching will be completed over three extended weekend lane closures, from 8 p.m. Fridays to 5 a.m. Mondays in July. The project is expected to be complete by the end of November. Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Cook County State’s Attorney Kimberly Foxx by giving a wide range of health care institutions and individuals a right to refuse care, based on the health provider’s own personal views and threatens millions of dollars in funding if Cook County fails to comply. Dr. Shannon’s testimony supporting the requested injunction articulates the threat to Cook County residents, noting that Cook County Health “is one of
the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment. Click here to find details on other construction projects in IDOT’s District 1. Updates on the impacts to traffic are available at www.travelmidwest.com.

Under the regulations proposed to take effect in July, Cook County Health could not ask a nurse prior to hiring if (s)he objected to administering a measles vaccination—even if this was a core duty of the job. Or an emergency room doctor could refuse to assist a woman who arrived with a ruptured ectopic pregnancy, even if the woman’s life was in jeopardy. Omar Alebiosu, Niles West High School’s new Director of Physical Welfare

“busiest trauma unit in the Midwest,” according to Shannon. If HHS determines that Cook County failed or other Illinois providers failed to comply with the Final Rule – through their own actions or the actions of thousands of subcontractors relied upon to deliver health services – the federal government may terminate funding to Cook County and State. Foxx’s lawsuit argues that this drastic expansion of refusal rights and the draconian threat of termination of federal funds violate the federal Administrative Procedures Act, the Spending Clause and separation of powers principles in the U.S. Constitution. State’s Attorney Foxx is working with a coalition of 23 municipalities, counties and States to oppose the new regulations.
Alebiosu has been Assistant Athletic Director at Niles North High School for the past two years. In addition to assisting the Athletic Director with the responsibilities of that department, he also served as a teacher leader, teaching Varsity Physical Education and facilitating mindfulness days with varsity athletes. Before coming to D219, Alebiosu taught physical education at Evanston Township High School for three years. Prior to that he taught physical education at Dewey Elementary School in Evanston. At Dewey he created Progressive Young Men, a mentoring group as an alternative intervention, and he helped rewrite the District 65 Physical Education curriculum. Alebiosu has extensive coaching experience, including football and wrestling at Evanston Township High School and at Vernon Hills High School. Alebiosu earned a Master of Education, Principal Licensure, from Concordia University. He holds a Master of Education in Curriculum & Instruction from American College of Education. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education from Florida State University. Alebiosu is a proud alumnus of Niles North High School.

Joliet Slammers’ infielder Riley Krane lives in a trailer at DuPage Medical Group Field BY MARK GREGORY Editorial Director
@Hear_The_Beard mark@buglenewspapers.com In America, the average commute for someone to get to work is 26 minutes. Joliet Slammers infielder Riley Krane found a way to shave off 25-and-a-half minutes off that average. That is because Krane lives at the ballpark. Nestled in a parking lot on the first base side of DuPage Medical Group Field among the cars of the team management and the visiting umpires is a chrome and red trailer backed into a spot just off of Jefferson Street that Krane calls home. “I have been in the league and have been in the apartments and the host families and that is all great, but I know myself and I like my own space and like doing my own thing, so I was like lets do this,” he said. “It has been great so far. If we have a 7:45 bus, I wake up at 7:35 and life is good.” While he knew he wanted to live on his own this season, he wasn’t planning on living at the ballpark. “The Slammers have been great. I didn’t even propose to stay here,” Krane said. “I was asking about camp sights near by or somewhere I could stay and they recommended that I stay at the stadium and I was on board for that. It has been fun. The guys come by and we hang out there in the parking lot. If you are playing ball, why not live here.” Krane has been in the Frontier
League for a couple years and is in his first season with the Slammers after being traded from the Windy City ThunderBolts in December. This season, he is second on the team in average, hitting .270 for Joliet in a team-high 122 at bats in 31 games. He has team-best 33 hits, five doubles, two home runs, a teamleading 11 RBI and 13 runs scored. Krane, a native of Evergreen, Colorado, played his college baseball at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, where he started 165 of his 172 games for the Ichabods and posted a .325 career batting average with 156 runs scored, 25 home runs, 139 runs batted in and 30 stolen bases. Krane led Washburn in batting average (.315), runs (45), hits (63), home runs (13), RBIs (51) and slugging percentage (.595) his senior season. Krane ranks sixth in WU history in hits (219) and is among the top 10 in several other career categories. He is enjoying his first season in Joliet with the Slammers — the defending Frontier League Champions. “The energy is getting there. This is a new year and new team and it always takes some time to see what kind of a team you are going to be, but I think we have a good connection,” Krane said of his team. “When I was signed by Windy City, my first game in the league was here and (Slammers manager Jeff) Isom was the first guy I met in the league and I love playing for him and this group of guys is a great clubhouse and this is a great stadium.”

OAKTON
Owls baseball team earns postseason awards On the heels of the Oakton Community College baseball team (37-22) making its second straight appearance in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III World Series, two Owls sophomores have been named to NJCAA Division III All-American Team. Infielder Dan Sullivan earned a selection to the first team while outfielder Andrew Rouse received third-team accolades. Sullivan led the nation in RBI (89), finishing second in total bases (156) and home runs (16). His .834 slugging percentage ranked fifth, and his 84 hits ranked seventh in the nation. Sullivan led the Owls with a .449 batting average and a .518 on-base percentage. No offensive slouch himself, Rouse compiled 11 home runs (10th in the
nation), a .365 batting average, 46 RBI, 58 runs scored and 23 stolen bases. “Both are well deserving and had outstanding years,” says Bill Fratto, Oakton head coach. “Dan had two solid years at Oakton and I’m extremely proud of him. Andrew really came on for us after transferring from Heartland Community College. Dan and Andrew are both getting solid looks from four-year colleges.” All-America selections are made by the NJCAA Division III Baseball Committee. Even though the Owls didn’t repeat as champions, Fratto says the arrow is still pointing up for the program: “We finished fifth in the nation this year. We’ve set the bar high, but our expectations have been to go to a World
Series every year. I’m looking forward to recruiting and being stronger next season.” Sullivan also picked up several other postseason awards. He was named to the NJCAA Division III Baseball World Series All-Tournament Team. In three games in Greeneville, Tennessee, he batted .500, knocked in eight runs and scored four times. In addition, Sullivan was named to the NJCAA Region IV All-Region First Team and the All-
Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference First Team. The Owls reined in more postseason honors. The NJCAA Region IV All-Region First Team included Rouse, pitcher Luis Savigne and outfielder Marco Romero, who also was named to the All-Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference First Team. Pitcher Zach Rabe earned a spot on the NJCAA Region IV All Region Second Team. Fratto was named NJCAA Region IV
District B Coach of the Year for leading the Owls past the Delta College Pioneers in the District B championship. The victory in the best-of-three format propelled Oakton to another World Series appearance. “All the awards are due to the dedication of our coaching staff,” says Fratto, an Oakton alumnus. “Anyone who comes to play at Oakton not only will be coached well, they will also receive a good education.”

DAVE SAYS
Don’t Fake Being Poor to Fraud Financial Aid DAVE SAYS By Dave Ramsey
DEAR DAVE, I was recently offered an opportunity to participate in a hands-on stock trading class. The problem is we don’t have the $6,500 registration fee just lying around. My husband and I are on Baby Step 4 of your plan, so what would you think about us borrowing that amount from our emergency fund? We would still have three months of expenses set aside after paying for the class.
CAMILLE DEAR CAMILLE, I don’t know the exact course you’re talking about but I do know something about the concept of buying and selling stocks or day trading, if you want to call it that. I can tell you all the research shows 78 to 84 percent of day traders lose money. And 100 percent think they won’t be the ones losing out. That includes people, who take courses like the one you mentioned. I have found no data points, which show, on a consistent level across a broad population, that people who take a course like that become wealthy as a result. Buying and selling single stocks is an ultra-high-risk proposition. That’s why I don’t buy any single stocks. Now, I know some people, who buy and sell single stocks as a very small percentage of their financial world. It’s almost like a hobby for them. A couple might actually make a little money from time to time, but it’s not the main focus of their investment strategy. To hear them, it’s like listening to fishing stories. They’re always talking about the one that got away. I wouldn’t waste my money on the course, Camille—especially my emergency fund money. Your emergency fund is for, say it with me, emergencies only.
DAVE DEAR DAVE, I’ve got a couple of friends who
@DaveRamsey daveramsey.com
were advised by their financial planners not to open college savings accounts for their kids. Their planners told them this would count against their children’s ability to receive financial aid and assistance when it’s time for college. Apparently, these planners told them to put the money into their own retirement accounts. It’s my understanding, however, that both the child’s and the parent’s financial situations are looked into when determining financial aid. Can you please shed some light on this?
JEANETTE DEAR JEANETTE, So, if a financial planner told you not to get a job because then you can apply for welfare, are you going to listen to that person? What kind of moron gives financial advice like this? You don’t tell people not to save money for something, just so they can pretend they’re poor. Save whatever money you can, and send your kid to school. Why is that such a difficult concept to grasp? People need to stop looking for tricks and shortcuts, because there aren’t any that will be beneficial in the long run. I’m not going to pose as broke — fraudulently — to get financial aid for my kid. That’s ridiculous. I hope I wasn’t unclear.

Extra Traffic Enforcement Morton Grove Police Department announced its plans for July Fourth traffic enforcement with a focus on drunk and unbuckled drivers. The crackdown will run from June 17 through July 8 to encompass the Independence Day holiday, an alltoo-often deadly time on Illinois roads. The Morton Grove Police Department will join the Illinois State Police and more than 150 local police and sheriff’s departments for the increased statewide enforcement effort.
OTHER IMPORTANT TIPS INCLUDE: Give your designated driver your keys before you go out. If you are drunk or impaired by marijuana or other drugs, call a taxi, take mass transit, use your favorite ride-sharing service, or call a sober friend or family member to get you home safely. Promptly report drunk drivers to law enforcement by pulling over and dialing 911. Make sure everyone in your vehicle wears their seat belt. It is your best defense against an impaired driver. The Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over and Click It or Ticket campaign is funded by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation. The crackdown runs concurrently with a media campaign reminding motorists that impaired driving has “Life or Death” consequences.
