Resident leaves gigantic impression at Oakton Park Ridge resident John “Jack” Timperley graduates from Oakton Community College Park Ridge resident John “Jack” Timperley, a graduate of Maine South High School, graduated from Oakton Community College with an associate in arts degree and participated in the college’s commencement ceremony May 21. Timperley may be small in stature due to a rare genetic condition, but his list of accomplishments at the college is gigantic. During his time at Oakton, Timperley’s endeavors included serving as student trustee, editor for the college’s award-winning newspaper, student orientation leader and president of DECA, the competitive business team. He also was the master of ceremonies at the college’s recent speaker showcase, a vehicle for students to present their public speaking talents. Now that his educational chapter at Oakton has ended, he plans on transferring to Northeastern University this fall where he plans to double major in philosophy and business
administration. Timperley’s long-term goal is to teach philosophy at a university. He acknowledges Oakton for making it possible to motivate himself toward his ambitious goals. “Oakton allowed me to apply all that I learned to real world situations. I’ll always remember the warm atmosphere and the kind people at the college who wanted to help me succeed,” he said. Timperley was born with an extremely rare genetic condition, Fanconi Anemia (FA), which afflicts fewer than 5,000 individuals in the world. His own body began to fight him the day he was born. By the time he was three, he had been subjected to four dozen anesthetic procedures and a bone marrow transplant, which included irradiation of his existing bone marrow. The treatment disrupted the growth plates in his bones, which meant he would grow more slowly than other children and stop growing
sooner. It also left him with a highly compromised immune system, making him more susceptible to diseases of all kinds. “When I was in fourth grade, I was mistaken for a first grader, and today, although I’m now a college graduate, I’m the size of a 12 year old and often mistaken for a child,” Timperley explains. “With FA, I don’t know if I will be here tomorrow, so I want to enjoy every moment and accomplish what I can today.” Timperley remains confident about his abilities while maintaining a sense of humor about his situation. He drives a Mini Cooper with a booster seat and pedal extenders. “Well, it’s fitting because it’s ‘mini,’” he jokingly says. He recently started a new business, Timperley Consulting, where he conducts research on family genealogy and creates family trees. His goals outside of college are just as ambitious. Armed with a business card that reads, “Life Coach and Motivational Speaker,” he already has done some public speaking and is interested pursuing life coaching opportunities.

Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., Ryan Villopoto and Taylor Kinney participate in race, golf at Speedway BY MARK GREGORY Editorial Director
@Hear_The_Beard mark@buglenewspapers.com It has been a while since Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. has has earned a win on the track at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, but last week he earned a win high above it. Stenhouse beat out motocross legends Ryan Villopoto and Chicago Fire actor Taylor Kinney in a golf competition from a perch high above the track. “I have never hit golf balls off the grandstands before and that was really neat,” Stenhouse said. “I love golf, so I thought it was really cool to get to do this.” The three were on hand to promote one of the new features this year’s NASCAR Summer Festival Weekend at Chicagoland Speedway — the inaugural Pit Bike Nation. “I got excited when they said they were having pit bike races here the weekend of the races,” Stenhouse said. “I like to ride pit bikes and dirt bikes, then I heard Villopoto was coming out to the (media event), so while most of the time you don’t get super excited about media events, but this one I was super pumped about.” It was Villopoto that beat the other two in the exhibition pit bike race. The real event will feature Villopoto, as well as supercross/moto-

Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., Ryan Villopoto and Taylor Kinney participate in a exhibition pit bike race at Chicagoland Speedway. cross racers Jeff Stanton, Damon Bradshaw Carson Brown, Mike Brown, Gary Semics, Kyle Vance, Willy Browning — along with a rider or two to be announced shortly. For admission to the Chicagoland Speedway Pit Bike National, you must have a NASCAR ticket for that day, or a Sunday ticket. Tickets must be presented at the viewing area for admission. The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Chicagoland Speedway is June 30, but the weekend will kick off on June 27 with the ARCA Menards Series Bounty 150 followed by NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series Camping World
225 under the lights, while NASCAR Xfinity Series Camping World 300 hits the track Saturday. There is more than racing at this year’s event, however, as the pit bike racing joins, a carnival, BBQ competition and a concert by country star Lee Brice as events for the rest of the family to enjoy. “There will be a lot of cool things that will happen when we come back here for the race weekend with swimming pools, barbeque contests, pit bike races, a concert and of course our race,” Stenhouse said. “They are making it a destination for the weekend and I think that is really neat. It is something I
think they should do at a lot of races. We are not on track all the time and some people want to watch practice and some don’t and the ones that don’t have something to do all weekend. I am sure you will see some of drivers out there as well.” This season, Stenhouse is in 20th place in the NASCAR Monster Energy Cup standings with 308 points, less than 40 points out of the 16th and final spot to qualify for the playoffs. He has yet to win a race this year and has one top five and a pair of top-10 finishes. He will, however, look to his past
success at Chicagoland Speedway in hopes of grabbing his first win since 2017 when he had his only two Cup wins, claiming victory at the Geico 500 at Talladega and the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona. “I came here in 2008 for the first time racing ARCA cars here and we dominated the race but ended up not winning,” he said. “It wasn’t until 2012 when I won the Nationwide race here and that was really neat and anytime you win at a racetrack, you always want to come back. I think the characteristics of this race track, its old and has bumps and is worn out and that is always fun and puts on a good show.”

mortgage payment $2,700 a month, and I owe $325,000 on the house. I was offered a re-financing plan that included a monthly payment of $2,576 with no PMI, but the interest rate would be 4.6 percent. What do you think?

You don’t need to refinance with those numbers. You’d be going up more in terms of interest rate than you’d save with no PMI. The only reason the payment is going down is that you’d be agreeing to stay in debt longer. Now, if you could’ve lost some of that interest rate, and gotten rid of the PMI, that might have come close to making sense. But, even that might not have worked in the end, because you’d have closing costs associated with the deal. There’s no way this deal is a good idea. You’d essentially be going up a full percentage point in terms of interest, and all you’d really be doing is resetting, or re-casting, the loan. Basically, you’d be starting over on the loan. That’s why the larger payment and PMI would go away, but you’d have a significant increase in your interest rate. Where you’re at right now is fine, Phil. You’re off to a good start, so just keep on moving forward with get-
My wife and I are completely debt-free, and we have a full emergency fund in place. We bring home around $110,000 a year combined, and we are both maxing out 401(k) s at work. We each just opened additional IRAs, as well. At this point, we want to start setting aside $30,000 a year for a few years as savings to help buy a home. With all this in mind, what do you think about the idea of vintage watches as an investment? I work with a high-end retail company, and I’ve noticed certain sports watches have been doubling or even tripling in value over time. Would it be okay to spend around $5,000 on a vintage watch now, or should I wait until we’re in even better financial shape?
MIKE DEAR MIKE, Yeah, you could do that. Just make sure you look at it the right way. It would be a hobby, not a real investment. I have a friend who has collected a few thousand bottles of wine over the years. The value of most of them has gone up since he bought them, but it’s not part of his investment strategy. So, if you buy a $5,000 watch in your situation, that’s okay. Just don’t go nuts and buy 10 of them, you know? What we’re talking about here are collectibles. It could be the first step in building a collection of fine watches over the years. You could do the same thing with cars, but don’t make them part of your investment strategy. Treat them like consumption items, things you can afford to spend money on and enjoy.
