Seniors welcome season at Swing into Spring Annual expo welcomed largest crowd to Golf Mill in 2018 Just like a county fair, people count on the return of Swing into Spring Senior Expo as a harbinger of the season and this year was no exception. The 12th Annual Maine Township MaineStreamers Swing into Spring Senior Expo recently drew one of the largest crowds ever to Golf Mill Shopping Center and was a hit with attendees and exhibitors alike.

According to Nancy Arnold, Director of Business Development for Brookdale Senior Living, hundreds of seniors visited the Brookdale table.

“We are in the process of scheduling follow up visits with multiple people who were interested in more information about Brookdale Niles and Brookdale Des Plaines,” she said. “Brookdale will gladly participate next year.”

Other exhibitors echo that feeling. Andrew Wayda, a physical therapist with Athletico in Des Plaines, and Shawn Abraham, a physical therapist with Athletico in Park Ridge, were on hand to talk to seniors about how physical therapy can address chronic pain or help with recovery from an injury or surgery.

Seniors were able to visit the Illinois Secretary of State Mobile Driver Services Facility which was on

hand for renewal, replacement and corrections to driver’s license/state identification cards, vision screening with a driver’s license renewal, vehicle sticker sales, motor voter registration and organ/tissue donor information and registration.

Entertainment, health screenings and dozens of exhibiting organizations and companies, highlighted the day that featured Vito Zatto in his high-energy Las Vegasstyle nightclub show. Early Bird Bingo, Get Up and Go Stretches with Athletico, magician Marco the Magnificent, a MaineStreamers Zumba Gold demonstration and raffles throughout the day rounded out the action.

“Our expo continues to be a sig-

nature event with our Maine Township senior population,” said Township Supervisor Laura J. Morask who also sponsored the popular Early Bird Bingo. “And this year was no exception.”

The Senior Expo may welcome spring, but that is just one activity that is part of MaineStreamers broad array of educational programs and recreational activities that enhance the quality of life for Maine Township residents 55 years of age and older.

Honorees share passion for community, Niles Chamber of Commerce honored village’s best at Night of the Roses ceremony

The Niles Chamber of Commerce honored the village’s best and brightest April 27 at its annual Night of Roses – A Tribute to Home Grown Success.

The evening is a celebration of the community both the businesses and the residents.

“The Village of Niles has many moving parts,” according to Thomas Pekic, chamber First Vice President and the owners of Chasers Sports Bar & Grill. “This combination of public services, businesses, schools, amenities and residents, working together in this great town has been the special recipe for its success.”

Maine East senior Mansi Bodalia was named the Niles Citizen of the Year. As a freshman she became an active member of the club Rotary Interact. Through her involvement in various volunteer opportunities, her passion for community service grew. In her junior year she was named the copresident of the 350+ member organization. Among her volunteer endeavors Mansi visits a local senior home to teach about technology, helping them bridge the technological gap. Mansi is considered tthe backbone of Rotary Interact’s involvement in the WGN Toy Drive. The group raised funds and purchased over $12,000 in toys for children during Christmas.

“The work I have put in to this [Rotary Interact] is a product of my passion,” said Mansi. “At Maine East I was able to learn an inclusive leadership style.”

“I would like to thank my parents. They saw the passion and talent in me and honed it. I would like to thank each of you helping me reach a stage where I can hold up this award as mark of my achievement,” she said.

John Jakot was born and raised in Niles. His civic mindedness began in the 1970s when he started volunteering for various functions, special events, fundraisers, coaching youth sports. He is a member of the Knights of Columbus and coordinates the annual SummerFest and Carnival. He is the secretary of the Rotary Club of Skokie, president of the East Maine School District 63 Education Foundation and on the Board of Directors of Maine-Niles Association of Special Recreation.

John has also traveled to Washington DC on numerous occasions as port of the Illinois Association of School Boards’ Federal Relation Network in order to appraise legislators of public school issues and challenges. He was elected a Niles village trustee in 2013 He is chairman of the Human service Committee and represents the village of Niles on the Board of Directors with Northwest Municipal Conference and the Solid waste Agency of Northern Cook County Board of Directors.

Reagan’s Illinois: Place of honor, integrity, kindness Ronald Reagan the only president born in Illinois

BY JIM DUNN OF SAUK VALLEY MEDIA On Feb. 6, 1984, President Ronald Reagan was riding high as he celebrated his 73rd birthday in Dixon, Illinois, the county seat of Lee County and the town where he lived as a youth for a dozen years starting in 1920.

More than half a century earlier, Reagan had ventured forth from his hometown to earn a bachelor’s degree at Eureka College, class of 1932 – not an easy feat during the Great Depression.

Then he became a radio sports announcer in Iowa, an actor in about 50 Hollywood movies, president of the Screen Actors Guild, a television personality, and spokesman for General Electric.

Turning to politics in the 1960s, he served as governor of California for two terms and, on his third try, was elected 40th president of the United States.

His hometown birthday bash in 1984 found Reagan – tall, handsome and known for his sense of humor – in good spirits as he addressed a crowd that packed Dixon High School’s Lancaster Gymnasium.

His speech came after he and his wife, Nancy, rode in a parade and lunched at his boyhood home, which local residents had rushed to renovate in time for the big day.

“Birthdays are special moments, and you’ve given me one today,” Reagan said. “But I must tell you, even though this is the 34th anniversary of my 39th birthday (the crowd laughs), those numbers don’t faze me at all. I believe Moses was 80 when God first commissioned him for public service.”

After more audience chuckles, Reagan continued: “And I also remember something that Thomas Jefferson once said. He said, ‘We should never judge a president by his age, only by his works.’ And ever since he told me that – (laughter) – I’ve stopped wor-

rying. There are those who say I’ve stopped working.” (More laughter) Reagan, known as The Great Communicator for his TV addresses to the nation from the Oval Office, could afford to poke fun at himself.

He was feeling healthy and fit, nearly three years after being shot by John Hinckley in March 1981, barely two months after his inauguration.

The economy was growing again after a tough 1982 recession.

And his re-election chances looked good.

Reagan, a Republican, would go on to receive 59 percent of the vote that fall and carry 49 states in a defeat of Democratic nominee Walter Mondale. The former vice president had served under the man Reagan more narrowly defeated in 1980, President Jimmy Carter.

It was quite an accomplishment for the only president born in Illinois.

The son of Jack and Nelle Reagan, Ronald Wilson Reagan was born on Feb. 6, 1911, in a second-floor Main Street apartment in the Whiteside County village of Tampico.

A conservative icon to many, a proponent of leaner government and a stronger national defense, Reagan served from 1981 to 1989 amid trying times.

Among them: Reagan’s firing in 1981 of 11,000 striking air traffic controllers; the 1983 explosion at a U.S. barracks in Beirut that killed 241 Marines and sailors; the 1986 space shuttle Columbia disaster; and the Iran-Contra scandal where arms were traded for hostages.

But in Reagan’s Illinois, folks remember the positives: a new spirit of optimism; economic expansion; the invasion of Grenada to oust leftist revolutionaries; and nuclear arms reduction treaties with the Soviet Union.

At the Ronald Reagan Birthplace, Tampico residents still serve cake every year on Reagan’s birthday. A few years ago, they erected a statue of Reagan as a boy playing on a cannon in the town park.

In Dixon, they’re fixing up Reagan’s boyhood home again. Numerous rehab projects were undertaken in 2017 to repair deteriorated parts of

the house, built in 1891.

Down the street in a restored three-story brick school building, the Northwest Territory Historic Center preserves Reagan’s grade-school classroom and has a display of his movie posters.

Two statues commemorate Reagan: one portrays him wearing a suit outside the boyhood home, and the other, in the city’s downtown riverfront park, shows him, clad in riding clothes, astride a stallion – just as he appeared in a local parade in 1950.

An effort to erect a statue of young Reagan as a lifeguard at Dixon’s Lowell Park has yet to bear fruit. Over seven summers, he rescued 77 struggling swimmers from the Rock River.

Reagan’s tough stance against communism is recalled in Dixon’s downtown, where a replica of the Berlin Wall stands. Less than a year after he left office, the Cold War-era wall fell.

Reagan’s name would be preserved on everything from a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier, to an airport, government buildings and roads, to Dixon’s own Reagan Middle School.

His post-presidency, which included publishing his memoir, “An American Life,” in 1990 and dedicating his presidential library in Simi Valley, California, in 1991, was dominated by his bout with Alzheimer’s disease.

He bore the illness for nearly 10 years until his death in California on June 5, 2004. He was 93.

All that still lay ahead as Reagan stood at the Dixon High School podium on Feb. 6, 1984, and thanked “everyone who made this terrific day possible.”

The president praised the spirit of small-town America that had the nation “back on her feet and moving forward with confidence.”

And he said: “So, you see, the reason I came home today was not to celebrate my birthday, but to celebrate Dixon and America. Honor, integrity and kindness do exist all across our land.”

Honor, integrity and kindness are qualities that inspired a president.

He learned to appreciate them in small-town Illinois – Reagan’s Illinois.

Why not short-term disability?

DEAR DAVE, Why don’t you recommend having short-term disability insurance while doing the first three Baby Steps of your plan? It seems like a good time for it, when you’re in the beginning stages of getting your finances in order.

BOB DEAR BOB, You could certainly do that if you want, possibly even through your place of employment. I’m a big fan of folks having long-term disability insurance when they’re in their prime wage-earning years. But short-term disability is something I’ve always considered to be gimmick insurance, and that’s something I don’t recommend or buy.

I get the argument, too, that short-term disability coverage usually isn’t very expensive. But during the first two Baby Steps — getting a $1,000 beginner emergency fund set aside, and paying off everything but the house — you’re trying to limit expenses as much as possible.

Chances are you wouldn’t need it in Baby Step 3, because that covers your full emergency fund of three to six months of expenses.

Hope that helps, Bob! —DAVE DEAR DAVE, My husband and I are trying to

buy a house, but we both have low credit scores, so we’re having trouble securing a loan. We’ve heard you talk about getting a mortgage loan with no credit score. Is this the same as a low credit score?

LAURA DEAR LAURA, No, it is not. No credit score, means you don’t have any credit or your credit score is “indeterminable.” A low credit score indicates you’ve had — or still have — debt in your life, and you haven’t done a good job of paying creditors on time.

Two things will help solve the problem of having a low credit score. One is time. If you’ve had in-

stances of late payments from years ago, time will help heal that to a degree. The older late issues become, the less they count against you.

But my guess is you two probably have some bad debt. By bad debt, I mean things that were never paid, or accounts that are in collections.

If that’s the case, you need to contact those people, and settle those debts in full — and in writing — as quickly as possible. Officially close the accounts, too, before you try to buy a home.

When it comes to buying a home, Laura, I always advise folks to first be debt-free and have an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses set aside.
