A bill that allows minors who suffer from epilepsy have access to medical cannabis is headed for Gov. Pat Quinn’s desk.

The Illinois House passed Senate Bill 2636 with a vote of 98 to 18 on May 21.

If signed into law by Quinn, it would allow Illinois residents under the age of 18 to apply for a prescription as long as the patient suffers from seizures.

Rep. Lou Lang, rep. lou laNg D-Skokie, sponsored D-SkOkIe the proposal.

Essentially, it adds epilepsy to the definition of “debilitating medical condition” that Medical Cannabis Pilot Program addresses.

Under current rules, patients can’t apply pat QuiNN for the card to treat ILLInOIS gOVeRnOR epileptic seizures, and no one under the age of 18 is eligible for a prescription card.

The law still hasn’t been put into effect pending approval of a set of rules being drafted by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Teen hospitalized after being shot in Skokie Detectives are asking community members for any information they can offer

Police are investigating a shooting that left a teen wounded in the leg.

About 2:10 p.m., police received two calls reporting gunshots in the 8800 block of Bronx Avenue, said a Skokie news release.

The first call notified police of gunshots while the second

call was reportedly from the 18-year-old victim of the shooting.

Authorities say the victim was taken to a hospital for treatment. Detectives are investigation the shooting, and anyone with information about the incident is being asked to contact Skokie police at 847-982-5900, or call the crime tip hotline at 847-933TIPS (8477).

John Jekot joins St. John Brebeuf Well-known parishioner, civic leader and volunteer is now the Event Coordinator

A well-known parishioner, civic leader and volunteer, John Jekot, is now the Event Coordinator for St. John Brebeuf (SJB) Parish in Niles.

Among other duties, Jekot will be responsible for the scheduling and coordinating of all events in the Father Tom May Ministry Center and throughout the parish. He started in his position on May 19.

He will act as the parish contact for Archdiocesan Agencies and other outside groups that use SJB church and the Ministry Center. In addition, he will act as host by overseeing events on weekends and evenings.

“John’s good work speaks for itself so he will be a great asset to our Parish team,” says Pastor Michael Meany. “John worked in the same capacity at St. Michael’s in Old Town and after hearing about his good work, I decided that his talents could be put to work right here at SJB, his home parish.”

With his supervisory experience with the Forest Preserve District of Cook County, the Lindenhurst Park District and the Niles Park District, he will focus on ensuring a safe and orderly use of the SJB facilities, Meany added.

Jekot also currently serves as Trustee in the Village of Niles. He was on the East Maine School Dist. 63 Board of Education and still serves on its Education Foundation as Vice President.

The bill also would change eligibility requirements to allow these projects to receive work-in-kind credit, which can assist local efforts to rebuild the levees to authorized levels of protection. • Improve navigation in the Mississippi River Basin. This bill would authorize a first of its kind study to help better understand how the Basin functions as a system and how it can best be managed in order to maintain safe and reliable navigation and protect lives and property, especially during times of severe flooding and drought. The legislation would also improve tools used for Mississippi River forecasting and expanding flexibility for the Army Corps of Engineers to maintain navigation. It also creates a firstever environmental management pilot program for the middle Mississippi River.

problem Village officials baffled by Oakton water main leak

Niles officials are still trying to track down the source of an “elusive” water main break on Oakton Street.

“Public works is doing everything in their power,” said Trustee Joe LoVerde.

Because of his background in construction and 30 years experience with the Niles water and sewer system, LoVerde has taken the lead in working with the village’s public works crews to try to determine where the water is coming from.

At a May 17 press conference held by Mayor Andrew Przybylo, village officials said they had already spent $36,000 trying to find the leak’s source.

So far, the village has hired two companies, specializing

in finding leaks using sonar technology, to determine where the water was coming from.

Neither company could find the water’s source.

Moreover, Morton Grove, which has a water main down the south side of Oakton, also examined their water lines to no avail.

A contributing factor in why the village has yet to find the source of the leak is that map records for that area’s water main, installed in 1955, are incorrect.

“It might have been something abandoned in 1950,” said LoVerde. “A piece or water main or service that was capped that is now leaking.”

The leak has been on the village’s radar since at least March 24 and was brought up at an April 22 meeting of the Niles trustees.

that the village loses an annual average of 600,000 gallons of water, purchased from Chicago, to leaks.

“The village has more water main leaks than other villages,”

That night, the village passed a water rate increase and brand new sewer service charge to help pay for its water-related infrastructure.

The leak is north of the median along the westbound

lanes of Oakton Street, between Waukegan Road and Nordica Avenue. The water has been pushing itself through cracks in the pavement in that area for at least eight weeks.

Because of this, Przybylo said he was worried about the damage the water was causing to utilities and the roadbed, going so far as say he fears a sinkhole if the water’s source isn’t found.

Throughout the search, public works have replaced worn down bolts at water main joints and a leaking fire hydrant.

However none of these fixes has stopped the leak.

“We haven’t found anyone that can look through pavement yet,” said LoVerde, jokingly.

Before the leak was found a water main replacement project

was being planned for Oakton from Milwaukee Avenue to Caldwell Avenue, said LoVerde.

He said if the engineering work were completed for the Waukegan Road to New England Avenue segment of the plan, it might get move up public works’ queue as an emergency project.

Meanwhile, Village Manager Steve Vinezeano said it was too early to estimate how much it would cost to repair the leak once it was found.

“It’s probably too early to say, because depending on how wide you need make that hole and how long it takes and if we end up bringing in larger equipment,” said Vinezeano.

“We’ll be able to handle it. We’ll get it done financially. It’s just a matter of doing it right.”

niles, morton Grove consider teaming up to get cheaper water Park Ridge invited to join in to help lower cost of project

ahernandez@buglenewspapers.com @TheAVHernandez Niles and Morton Grove are moving forward with exploring sources of water that are cheaper than Chicago.

The city of Chicago raised its water rates by 15 percent in this past January and plans on raising it another 15 percent in January of 2015. Niles recently increased its own water rate to keep up and village officials believe Chicago will continue to raise its rate in the coming years.

Because of this, Niles officials have reached out to Morton Grove and Park Ridge to join them in a project that would allow them to build a new water pipe that would supply the three municipalities with water from either Evanston or Wilmette.

“We see bigger savings with the Evanston project,but it’s a more expensive project to accomplish,”said Patrick Glenn, senior engineer with Gewalt Hamilton Associates at a May 12 meeting of the Morton Grove Trustees.

Separately, all three communities use a relatively small amount of water compared to their neighbors. However once Niles, Morton Grove and Park Ridge are combined, they become largest water customer in the area.

“We have a great opportunity for the Village of Niles, the Village of Morton Grove and potentially Park Ridge,” said Niles Village Manager Steve Vinezeano.

“We have two viable options, and I think this is a great opportunity for our municipalities to do right by our residents.”

Gewalt Hamilton recommends that Niles, Morton Grove and Park Ridge team up to build a water supply line from Evanston.

The project would cost of total of about $115 million, require a 20-year

infrastructure bond from each community that would carry a 4 percent interest rate and sign on to a 30-year agreement to purchase water from Evanston.

“The three communities working together is advantageous,” said Glenn.

It’s estimated this would save Niles $118 million, Morton Grove $95 million and Park Ridge $125 million over a 30year period.This would mean after yearly bond payments for the infrastructure are made, Niles could save $1.4 million, Morton Grove could save $1.4 million annually and Park Ridge will save $1.3 million per year.

The estimated cost for each municipality was calculated by GeWalt Hamilton and based on their water demand and distance from Evanston.

“We see bigger savings with the Evanston project, but it’s a more expensive project to accomplish,” said Glenn. “The Wilmette project also has certain advantages in redundancy and, probably most importantly, we don’t see these savings unless all three communities come together.”

Once the bonds are paid off, each municipality would pay only for the cost of water.

However some officials have said they worry the new water line could end up benefiting the suburb that controls it more than the suburbs that are supplied by it. This was a worry that Vinezeano also cautioned about at a Niles budget workshop meeting on March 13 and was echoed by Park Ridge Mayor David Schmidt after GeWalt Hamilton made a similar pitch to Park Ridge officials on May 5.

However Glenn said that unlike Chicago, Evanston is very “transparent” in giving information regarding how they adjust their water rate. He added that both Wilmette and Evanston’s rates are based on actual costs.

“This is how the North West Water Commission works with Evanston,” said Glenn. He said Evanston provides a through document that detail how the rate is arrived at.

The project scheduled to be discussed again at a May 27 meeting at Niles and again in Park Ridge on June 9.

Slowek medals, throws 129 feet in discus

Maine East’s Elanta Slowek placed sixth in the state in the discus.

CHARLESTON – Maine East’s Elanta Slowek advanced to the state meet the past two years but didn’t return home with any hardware.

This year was a different story.

Slowek earned medalist and All-State honors in the discus with a throw of 129feet, 11-inches, good for sixth overall.

“It feels better than nothing, that’s for sure,” Slowek said.

“I’ve been down here three times and not one time did I medal. I was hoping to medal in high jump, but it wasn’t a good day.”

It was a great way for Slowek to finish off her senior year.

“I’ve been throwing off lately, but at least I threw something,” Slowek said. “It feels good. My senior year has been amazing. I don’t think I could have planned for any better. Last year I was nervous and this year I matured a little bit and just threw and didn’t worry about everyone watching me.”

Slowek also competed in the high jump, registering a jump of 5-2.

•Niles West’s Tiffany Burgara saved her best vault for her last meet, vaulting a height of 9-9 on her final try before missing 10-3 in three attempts.

“I’m happy,” Burgara said.

“I PR’d, it was my first year at state, I’m just happy to be here. It was really hot here and the girls were really good.

I was super happy to make the jump. It was definitely a good way to finish my career.”

Wolves’ junior Christine Mujica clocked in with a time

of 5:15.80 to finish eighth in her heat of the 1,600. It was her first time competing at state.

“This was a new meet, Mujica said. “The track seemed a lot bigger than it was. It was a really fast track.

I kind of regret not pushing it at the 300 instead of the 150.

I’m not exhausted, so I had a little more. I learned that I can keep up with more girls.

My PR is 5:14, so I was pretty consistent.”

Also competing for the Wolves was sophomore Jazmin Rafanan. A sophomore, Rafanan was at the state meet for the first time and took sixth in her heat of the 300 hurdles with a time of 48.74.

“I felt like I did good, but I could do much better,” she said. “I’m ready to work and get better. It is really nice here and I like it. I want to do it again. At first I was nervous, but then I get in my zone and was ready to go. Hopefully next time I can make finals. I wasn’t expecting to make it here, but I’m glad I did and got the experience.”

•Running next to Rafanan in the hurdles was Maine South’s Olivia Cattau. Cattau set a personal record in her third and final time at state, finishing in third place with a time of 46.08.

“I felt really fast,” Cattau said.

“I was using the opposite lead leg over the hurdle for half the race. It is a PR so I can’t complain. It is a school record.

It felt good. The experience definitely helped out. I was less nervous and I felt like I knew what I was doing more.

This is the first race I haven’t finished last in at state. It was a good way to finish my career, I’m not too upset.”

The area will be well-represented at this weekend’s boys state meet as last Thursday’s Class 3A Loyola Sectional team runner-up Niles West qualified four individuals in five events, while fourth-place Maine South also will send four individuals in five events.

Leading the way are two seniors: Dennis Gargovic of NilesWest,who won both the shot put and discus competition, and Maine South’s John Hader, a double winner in the 100- and 200-meter dashes.

The Wolves scored 74 points to sectional champion Evanston’s 106.5.The Hawks checked in with 60 points.

NILES WEST Gargovic will be looking to repeat as a state medal winner in the shot put after placing sixth in his first trip to Charleston last spring. He threw 55 feet, 3 inches to claim the shot title at Loyola, and also went 161-3 to grab the

discus crown.

“This year I was a little more relaxed,” Gargovic said. “I knew I just had to hit a good throw to qualify. This year it’s definitely just place higher than last year(at state).”

Chris Vivone, the Wolves coach, said Gargovic is at the top of his game going into Friday’s preliminary state competition.

“He really is,”Vivone said.“He’s a seasoned veteran, having survived the prelims at state (last year) and making it to the state finals, so we’re very confident in what he can do. He’s been looking really good.”

Senior Matt Henry, an eighthplace finisher last year at state in the 300 intermediate hurdles, will get another crack at bettering that finish this weekend. He qualified by finishing third at sectionals in a time (39.84 seconds) that equaled the qualifying standard.

Accompanying Gargovic and Henry will be first-time qualifiers Christo Cadet, a senior whose 44-4 took the triple jump, and junior Jackson Denley, a second-place

finisher in the 400 (49.90). Cadet, Vivone noted, took up track just last year.

“He didn’t even make a 40-

foot jump last year and he’s gone 45-9 for us this year so we’re really looking forward to (this) week(end),”Vivone said.

Sports >> CHAMPS, FROM PAGE 12 championships in the 100 (10.96) and 200 (22.15), will try to accomplish a feat this weekend that’s never been achieved in the history of Maine South: medal in a sprint event.

“That’s been my goal,” he said.

“My goal is to run on Saturday, whether it’s the 100 or the 200. I had a good chance at it last year but I tried to do a little too much and it didn’t work out.

“Winning the 100 and 200 was very nice. That was my goal coming in so I’m really happy with what happened.”

Senior Jack Carpenter pulled away from the 3,200 field later in the race and won it in a time of 9:21.71. Junior Paul D’Ambrosio also clocked in under the state qualifying time and joins Carpenter downstate. D’Ambrosio placed fourth in 9:27.52.

“I knew I had to start picking up the pace the last mile,” Carpenter said. “Paul, a great race by him. I couldn’t be happier and more proud of him for doing that.

Hopefully I’m in the fast heat (at

state).Who knows? Medaling isn’t out of the question at this point.”

Henry Mierzwa, a junior, was third in the 1,600 with a time of 4:19.25; the qualifying standard is 4:22.04. Mierzwa was one of five 1,600 runners to qualify for state out of the Loyola sectional.

MAINE EAST Christian Lopez limped off the infield after securing second place in the long jump with a state-qualifying leap of 20-11 ¾, but the senior has been used to dealing with pain throughout the spring.

Lopez tore his hamstring during the indoor season, and missed the entire outdoor season before coming back for his first meet of the year at the CSL North championships in mid-May. After the state meet, Lopez said he’ll need to stay off of his leg for about a month, but the injury isn’t going to keep him from jumping at state.

“It’s a great feeling,” said Lopez of making it to state. “I’ve been fighting it (the torn hamstring) all season. I’ll rehab all week and

then I’ll be jumping at state.”

NOTRE DAME It was a tough day all around for coach Mike Jankowski and the Dons. Senior Tim O’Hara, who qualified for state last year in the 200, developed the flu just before the ESCC championships, held the week prior to sectionals.

O’Hara won both the 100 and 200 at the ESCC, and made a go of it at sectionals, but wasn’t able to make it to the finals in either event.

“He was just kind of at the start of it (the flu at the ESCC),” Jankowski said. “He felt really bad but his body was still healthy enough and he ran great, had pretty good times and really did a nice job. Between that and trying to survive that for a week, it took just enough out of him.”

Quatre Coats did register a distance on his final throw of the day in the discus that would have qualified him for state, but the senior unfortunately hit the sector line so the throw didn’t count.

“He’s been throwing really well, too,” said Jankowski of Coats, who ended up placing third in the discus.

Hawks’ streak of regional titles ends at seven By mike sandrolini For the bugle

Girls soccer coach JJ Crawford knew going into Maine South’s St. Ignatius Regional championship game last Friday versus the host school that the Hawks needed to keep it close.

The No. 4-seeded Hawks did keep things close, but scoring has been a problem for Maine South all season, and that proved to be the club’s downfall against the Wolves. Fifth-seeded St. Ignatius ended the Hawks’ season with a 2-0 victory last Friday. The Wolves advanced to this week’s sectional, hosted by Maine South, and faced New Trier on Wednesday.

The Hawks’ loss broke a string of seven straight regional titles, dating back to 2007 when the two-class system (Class A and AA) was still in place.

Maine South (11-11-1) played St. Ignatius even through the first half, which ended in a scoreless tie.

“The first half went really well,” Crawford said. “We battled with them. It was even with about three shots apiece.

St. Ignatius started coming out really physical and we were able to match it.”

However, the Hawks were victims of an unlucky break as one of their players was called for a handball in the box. St. Ignatius converted a penalty kick for a 1-0 lead.

“It was clearly unintentional,” Crawford said.“However, the ref felt that it was a handball PK, so that unfortunately changed the

dynamic of the game because we’ve had a little bit of trouble scoring this season.”

The Wolves added another goal 25 minutes into the second half.

Crawford says goodbye to nine seniors, eight of whom were in the starting lineup.

“We had an incredible group of seniors,” he said. “I was disappointed for them; obviously we were wanting to win a regional. Not only are they really good soccer players, they’re just great people.”

One of those graduating seniors is all-state goalkeeper Emily O’Grady, who’ll be playing college soccer at Iowa State.

“Ever since I was a kid I wanted to be a Hawk,” O’Grady said. “I love the school and I love the environment that everybody creates. Just being a Hawk is awesome.”

The Hawks moved into the regional title game by blanking No. 13 seed Steinmetz 5-0 on May 20. Lexi Kiotis and Gabby Pinto notched two goals each, while Jessie Schmidt scored midway through the second half.

•Niles West snapped a 2-2 tie in its Maine East regional opener thanks to a second-half goal from Emela Mehicevic to win, 3-2, on May 21. The win was the Wolves’ 14th on the year—a single-season school record.

BOYS TENNIS Maine South last year qualified two singles players for the state tourney, which gets under way on Thursday. The Hawks will be represented this spring by a doubles squad—senior Peter Demke and junior Nick Salgia.

Demke and Salgia knocked off a team from Fenwick in a rugged 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 match at the Oak Park-River Forest sectional on Saturday that secured them a trip downstate. They ended up taking third place by beating Maine West’s Patrick Czuj and Henry Nguyen, 6-2, 7-5.

•Niles West competed at Saturday’s New Trier sectional, but failed to qualify either a singles player or doubles tandem for the state tourney.

Wolves’ No. 1 singles player Jesse Sacks dropped a 4-6, 7-5,

6-2 match that, had he won, would have earned him a state berth.

BASEBALL Maine East got doubles from David Schnobrich and Jose Trujillo, but fell 10-0 to Maine West on May 19. Lukas Parker connected for a solo homer during an 11-1 Demon loss to Deerfield the next day. Trujillo hit a triple and Dylan Kuffell had two hits and an RBI in the Demons’ 11-4 loss to Maine West May 21. Bradley Augustyn also had two hits and Will Heins an RBI. The Demons collected 10 hits on May 22—all singles— but couldn’t avoid losing its 19th straight game, this one 8-1 to Waukegan. Kuffell had three hits, while Will Heins and Adrian Jalili each singled twice.

•Niles West on May 19 thumped Waukegan 12-2 behind pitcher Chad Thompson, who didn’t allow an earned run, along with the hitting of Tyler Stegich, who went 4-for-4 with three RBI, and Matt Delavega (two hits), who hit a two-run double in the sixth.

Tommy Toledo also tripled,

doubled and singled, driving in two runs. Christos Tountas ended up with two hits, and Cody Pazik had an RBI. Stegich pitched a three-hit shutout with six strikeouts in the Wolves’ 7-0 win against Waukegan May 20. Brandon Gallas had a double and single, Delavega added two hits and two RBI. Pazik and Kevin Lochner had an RBI each.

The Wolves got another solid effort on the mound in a 6-3 victory vs. Niles North from Blake Kons, who went the distance, limiting the Vikings to one earned run and three hits with five strikeouts. Toledo (two RBI) and Pazik each had multiple-hit games, while Stegich, Michael Gunartt and Christos Tountas (double) each had an RBI. •Maine South came back from a 3-2 deficit May 20 to take a 4-3 lead over New Trier in the seventh inning. The Hawks went on to win by that 4-3 score. Bobby Pennington walked in the seventh and came around to score on Caleb deMarigny’s triple to leftcenter field. Maine South (23-6) was victorious in its final regular season game, 6-5, over Jacobs on Saturday. Balow and Gehrig Parker each had two-run singles and Depkon registered another victory in relief. deMarigny earned a save.

•Notre Dame and Loyola played to a 9-9 tie on May 20 as the game was stopped after 10 innings due to darkness.

John Draths doubled and had two RBIs, A.J. Boehmer went 4-for-6 including a double and an RBI, Sam Ferri doubled and had an RBI , and Ian Steigerwald doubled as well. Also driving in runs were Michael Ferri and Tommy Simon (two hits).

SOFTBALL Niles West lost 6-1 to Glenbrook South on May 21.

Taylor Genis had two hits and an RBI, while Tatiyana Rodriguez doubled.

The Wolves on Saturday fell 19-5 to Mundelein in the first game of a doubleheader, and dropped the nightcap, 6-3. Rodriguez (RBI), Maya Caballero (two hits), Shannon McHugh, Alyssa Falcone (RBI) and Kacie Simkins (two RBIs) each doubled in Game 1.

A. Even the most successful business men and women in history constantly faced adversity.

The difference between them and their competitors, whom history has forgotten, is that successful people look for the opportunity in a problem.

We wouldn’t be human if we didn’t spend a certain amount of time bemoaning bad luck and feeling sorry for ourselves.

No matter how smart you are, I promise that you will have

unfair, unpredictable and highly 2-year-old.

Got the dot? It may save your life Assist first responders with the information they need. Become part of the Illinois Dot Program. The Illinois Dot Program is a statewide initiative designed to provide vital medical information on vehicle drivers and passengers.

Information contained on the medical card can assist first responders in the “Golden Hour” immediately following a serious crash.

Tai Chi Demo Join Renee Gatsis – a certified instructor from the Arthritis Institute for a FREE demonstration and information on Tai Chi. The Center for Concern Volunteer needed Volunteer help needed at the reception desk of the Center of Concern in Park Ridge. Morton Grove North Shore Senior Center

North Shore Senior Center’s Morton Grove Social Services Office has space in the American Legion Memorial Civic Center at 6140 Dempster Street. Information and assistance is provided to individuals of all ages including access to public benefits, referrals for a variety of community programs, on-site and offsite support groups, and applications for the Village financial assistance program.

A monthly Caregiver Support Group meets on the fourth Wednesday of the month from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

On-site appointments are available for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, with Senior Health Insurance Program volunteers, and to discuss individual concerns of all kinds.

Monthly wellness programs offered include cholesterol screening, diabetes screening, and a foot care clinic.

PACE announces fare policy changes Effective July 1, 2014, PACE is moving to Ventra Cards only

Effective July 1, 2014, PACE is moving to Ventra Cards only.

PACE staff will visit transit centers and transfer locations this summer to ensure customers are prepared for the ongoing transition to Ventra.

Staff will be on hand to distribute Ventra Cards and information to customers and respond to questions. Only one card will be offered to each new Ventra customer. Those who already have Ventra Cards, RTA Reduced Fare and Free Ride program permit holders are not eligible to receive one

of the free cards.

On average, three out of every five fare transactions on PACE buses are paid using Ventra.

Passengers who still use cards on the legacy systems should spend down any remaining balance on old fare cards before they’re phased out on June 1, 2014, for Chicago Card/ Chicago Card Plus and, on July 1, 2014, for magnetic strip cards.

Customers can continue to pay with cash but, after July 1, 2014, cash-paying PACE customers will no longer be able to buy a Transfer Card due to the deactivation of the magnetic strip card system. As a result, customers who need to purchase transfers must
