Farmers’ Market to return in June Morton Grove Farmers’ Market opens June 9, will continue every Saturday until Oct. 20

The Morton Grove Farmers’ Market, a staple of community pride and inclusion, will be returning next month.

The Morton Grove Farmers’ Market opens June 9 and will continue every Saturday until Oct. 20. The farmers’ market lasts from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday and takes place in front of the Morton Grove Civic Center at 6140 Dempster St. in Morton Grove. A committee serving with the Morton Grove Chamber of Commerce organizes the event.

“Our main focus is to provide farmers’ market services and goods to our patrons,” Eric Brodsky, one of the managers for the farmers’ market, said. “We want people to know what makes up our village.”

Brodsky is one of four managers in the committee. He has been a part of the committee for six months, but has been volunteering for the past eight years.

The farmers’ market is run entirely by volunteers.

Along with produce, vendors also typically sell baked goods, meat as well as other treats. Local artists and artisans also sell crafts made by hand. For opening day for the farmers’ market, there will be live music including a performance by the Golf Jr. High Show Choir as well as a performance from members of Croozin the Loop, a Chicagoland Motown band.

At opening day, the Morton Grove Library and Golf School District 67 will both be celebrated to encourage support for both within the community.

Food and beverages sold at the event include but are not limited to coffee, gourmet donuts, cheeses, fresh fruits and vegetables, pies, organic baked goods and fish. Brodsky said that the committee also encourages vendors to sell goods that are gluten free, vegan or that fit other dietary restrictions.

“We want to make sure everyone gets a real farmers’ market,”

Brodsky said.

The committee works alongside an assistance program run by the state called SNAP that strives to provide nutritional food to people in need that also fits their dietary needs. Users of SNAP receive a card that they use to buy food and food products that help fit their dietary needs.

Although the kickoff for the 2018 season starts in June, the chamber of commerce has hosted similar events throughout the year such as the Mother’s Day Farmers’ Market earlier

this month, the Taste of Morton Grove at the beginning of March and the Indoor Winter Farmers’ Market which took place both in December and February.

WWII caused changes to way of life, economy in IL Thousands of men enlisted and thousands more came through the state

BY ANDY KRAVETZ OF THE JOURNAL STAR Washington, Illinois, resident Mary Kerr said the war caused everyone to sacrifice.

“When we went into Iraq in 2001, there was no difference in my life because we went to war. But then, everyone was affected; from Victory Gardens to rationing of items to the draft, everyone was in,” she said.

Mothers saved tin cans and foil. Life went on, she said, but it was different.

“We went on with the churches and the schools, but it wasn’t the same. The Boy Scouts went on but they had paper drives,” Kerr said. “Nothing was the same as it was before Dec. 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor.”

THOUSANDS ENLISTED FROM ILLINOIS When war was declared in December 1941, thousands of men enlisted and thousands more came through the state either en route to or arriving at training stations.

The U.S. Naval Station Great Lakes had opened prior to World War I as a recruit training center, but by the early 1930s enrollment had slowed. World War II boosted the population at the station from 6,000 to 68,000, according to the Navy. In all, about 1 million sailors trained at the facility in North Chicago until the war ended in 1945.

Thousands of others, including many World War I veterans, flocked to the Illinois State Militia, also known as the Reserve Militia, where they agreed to serve for two years. They stood watch over bridges, railroads and other transit centers. When the war ended, hundreds were activated to serve as shuttle drivers in Chicago as the large number of GIs returning overwhelmed buses and trains, according the Illinois Secretary of State’s office.

By the end of 1945, Illinois had registered 1,954,674 men between the ages of 18 and 38 at 361 separate local draft boards. Of these, 629,516 were called

to serve. An additional 328,338 enlisted of their own accord bringing the total number of men from Illinois entering the services to 957,854.

The number of Illinois women joining the military during the war was 13,587. Counting those who already were in the military and those whose National Guard units were activated, Illinois supplied the U.S. armed forces with nearly 1 million of its citizens during the course of the war.

From Dec. 7, 1941, through Sept. 2, 1945, 17,521 Illinois servicemen and women were killed in combat or later died of wounds or injuries sustained in battle.

CATERPILLAR’S ROLE In Peoria, production of earth-moving equipment made by Caterpillar Inc. had already picked up in pace due to the federal Lend-Lease program, supplying goods and war material to Allied countries. Caterpillar tractors were already being used by the Allies in the early stages of World War II, according to Journal Star archives. But once the United States entered the war, production escalated. Bulldozers were vital to the war effort as they allowed creation of air fields and the cleanup of debris after battle.

Central Illinois factories geared up for greater production when the United States entered the war. The Defense Department initially asked for a variety of equipment from Caterpillar, including smaller items such as transmissions for tanks and undercarriages for howitzers.

Then, according to a Caterpillar historian, the Defense Department decreed for production to switch exclusively to motor graders and track-type tractors on a large scale.

Tom Emery, a freelance writer from Carlinville, said the state’s economy was booming during the war. Factories were humming with wartime activity.

“The industrial cities were cranking out products that were war related,” Emery said.

Many blacks moved to Illinois during the war, particularly to Chicago for jobs. And female employment grew by 50 percent.

ROSIE THE RIVETER One of those Rosie the Riveters was Ruth Lockart, who recently participated

in the oral history project at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library. The project was to reach out to World War II veterans and those who grew up during that time.

Lockart worked as a riveter at the Howard Aircraft Corp. in Chicago. When America went to war, she was on the family farm in Paris but she wanted to get involved in the war effort and moved to Chicago where her sister lived. She trained as a riveter at the American Aircraft Institute and later went to the Howard Aircraft Corp. where she helped to construct a Navy training plane.

“I think there were different models but I don’t know too much about them.

The one I worked on was the Nightengale,” Lockart said. “We’d go to the factory at 8 a.m. and then we’d be off at 5 in the evening. We’d take a streetcar to the factory.”

Chicago, she said, was different then than now, saying it felt like a small town when she lived there.

“I have always been proud that I was a Rosie the Riveter,” Lockart said. After the war, she went to beauty school in Paris and married a soldier who fought in the European Theater.

POW CAMPS Illinois was the home to several prisoner of war camps including one in Washington, a few miles outside of Peoria.

From 1944 to 1945, the village was the site of a small POW camp. The camp started with 50 German prisoners who helped make K-rations for the troops.

The camp expanded over the months to have more than 200 POWs, according to a book published by Mary Kerr about the Washington camp.

Kerr is working on another book about central Illinois during World War II, and including a chapter on a POW camp in the center of Eureka.

“Many people didn’t have contact with the prisoners and didn’t know if they were ‘good or bad,’” Kerr said. “But if you had contact with them, you probably went away thinking that they were OK.” The kids were very intrigued by the POWs, she said, noting that many would ride their bikes to the camp and talk to prisoners.

State records fall as Olivia Nizolek earns her third track medal for Maine South

CHARLESTON — Everyone wants to be part of history, but it’s a little more fun when you make some history of your own.

That was exactly what Maine South senior Olivia Nizolek had happen to her Saturday in O’Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University.

Nizolek was part of the 1600-meter run that was won

by Glenbard West sophomore Katelynne Hart, who won her second-straight distance triple crown by winning the cross country state title as well as the 1600 and 3200 runs in track.

She won the 1600 with a 4:47.36, setting a new state record that was set in 1985 by Shelly McBride of Crete-Monee (4:49.34). Finishing second in the race was Evanston senior Enyaeva Michelin, who also bettered the 33-year-old mark with a 4:48.18.

Nizolek battled in the group behind the leaders and placed fourth in the race with a time of 5:01.22.

That was where she made her own history.

The medal was Nizolek’s third as a Hawk and second-straight in the 1600 run.

That places her behind only

Diane Havlir (5 medals, 197376) in total track and field medals at Maine South. The two medals in the 1600 makes her the only Hawk female to have a pair of medals in the event.

Knowing how fast the race was going to be, Nizolek decided to hang back and not challenge the duo at the gun.

“I knew they were going to go,” she said. “They just went and broke the state record. I wasn’t thinking it would be smart to waste all my energy on the first half of the race just to die out later. So, I went out with the rest of the field and I was better to pace myself.”

Nizolek said the fast pace helped everyone in the race.

“I feel blessed running in the state of Illinois because everyone runs faster when you have someone elite like that,” she said. “I am going to run faster even though I was far behind them. Part of running is letting the other runner fuel you and I think that helped the whole field. You always want to win every race, but you can’t be unrealistic.”

Nizolek will run next season for the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana.

her shoes and represent Maine South on the signature EIU blue track.

One of those is Katie Dingle.

As a freshman, Dingle competed in one event at the state meet. As a sophomore, she advanced in two – and this season, her junior year, she advanced to compete at in O’Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in three events – the high jump, 100-meter high hurdles and the 300-low hurdles.

“I guess I have to pick up a fourth event for next year,” she joked after her meet concluded on Friday at the end of the preliminaries.

And, while she didn’t advance to the finals in any event, the meet was a success for Dingle.

“I was better than I was last year,” she said. “My 300-hurdles was better, the high jump was better and it was my first year in the 100 hurdles (at state).”

In the 100 hurdles, she posted a time of 16.11, while running a 48.64 in the 300 hurdles. In the high jump, she cleared 5-feet, 1-inch, missing the height of 5-4 needed to advance to the finals.

Dingle said the pace was more than she expected with the three events.

“It was busier than I thought it would be,” she said. “I was at the high jump and I had to be escorted to the 100 hurdles and when I finished that, I had to go warm up for the 300 hurdles. It was an experience, and who doesn’t love being here. I would rather be doing this here than anywhere else. I was pretty. proud of it.”

The Hawks were well-represented at state as senior Kathleen Glockner finished 17th in state in the 3200 with a time of 11:14.20.

In the field events, jnior Anna Gerbich threw the shot put 35feet, 6.5-inches and junior Cassandra Soto threw the discus 105-feet.

“It was nice to have a whole mix of throwers and runners here,” Dingle said. “Then friends and family are here and I just love it. We also brought two underclassmen this year who didn’t make it because once you see it, you want to come back.

Owls head to first-ever World Series Oakton sweeps Schoolcraft college for trip to NJCAA D-III nationals Oakton Community College’s baseball team has a lot to screech about as the Owls will be participating in the 2018 NJCAA Division III Baseball World Series, May 26-31, at Pioneer Park in Greenville, Tennessee.

The Owls captured their firstever trip to nationals by defeating Schoolcraft College in the NJCAA District B Championship May 19-20 at Wayne State University in Detroit.

In the two-game sweep, the Owls outscored the Ocelots 2910.

Pitcher Alex Crinigan (Hampshire, Hampshire High School) fanned nine batters over seven innings to notch his 10th win of the season in Oakton’s 17-8 victory on Saturday, May 19.

On Sunday, pitcher Tommy Gertner (Northbrook, Glenbrook North High School) did not allow an earned run, striking out four batters over six innings to improve to 9-1 on the season in Oakton’s 12-2 clinching victory.

First baseman Dan Sullivan (Palatine, Saint Viator High School) provided plenty of offensive fireworks, going 7-for-9 with two home runs and being named MVP of the NJCAA District B Championship.

“This is mind blowing to be part of history,” an elated Sullivan said. “During the tournament, I was in the zone and seeing the ball well. I just wanted to make each at bat count. Playing in the World Series, no matter what kind, is the dream of every kid who plays baseball.”

Oakton (40-16) is now just one of eight teams standing. While the brackets won’t be determined until later in the week, the Owls will be competing against

other teams from across the nation including Tyler Junior College (29-27), Rockingham Community College (23-19-1), St. Cloud Technical & Community College (19-7) and Northern Essex Community College (26-14).

“For all my years in coaching, this team set a standard for other teams to come,” Owls head coach Bill Fratto, who was named NJCAA District B Coach of the Year, said. “To advance this far is a total team effort. The kids are playing outstanding baseball at the right time. The team is on cloud nine, but there is still work for us to do.”

Sullivan said the team’s success this season has a lot to do with chemistry.

“Every time a player steps in the batter’s box, our team is going crazy cheering, whether we’re up 10 runs or down by 10,” Sullivan explained. “We’re just extremely positive and believe in ourselves and our teammates.”

The Owls practice Tuesday and Wednesday before departing for Tennessee on Thursday.

“This is the beginning of a new season for us,” Fratto said.

“We’ll be playing with the best teams in the nation, but we have a lot of horses who can get it done. The goal is to bring a national championship back to Oakton.”

Sullivan said the team is optimistic about competing on the big stage.

“There may be some first-inning jitters when we start playing, but once we step on the field everyone has a job to do,” he said. “We’ll compete hard and keep doing what we’ve been doing all season–putting up runs in every inning.”

Help them parents help themselves There’s nothing wrong with helping your folks get back on their feet, however, any financial help should be temporary DEAR DAVE, My parents have always been bad with money, and recently they lost their home to foreclosure. They found another place to live, and they both work, but since the foreclosure my dad has been asking me for money on a regular basis. He tries to make me feel guilty, and he calls or asks me to come over to talk about it when my mom isn’t home.

He even asked for half of the bonus I received at work the other day. I know they need help, but I’m not sure what to do.

ELI DEAR ELI, I can tell you love your parents, because you’re looking for the best way to help them. I think your brain knows what to do, but your heart is having a hard time doing it.

The first thing you’re going to have to accept is your father is being very manipulative right now.

Put an end to these private meetings and phone calls once and for all. If he wants to talk, make sure he understands it will only happen with your mom in the room.

Second, understand there’s nothing wrong with helping your folks get back on their feet. However, any financial help you give them should be temporary in nature, and it should be a gift. Don’t get involved in giving them money every month just because they raised you. That’s not how this works. When you permanently subsidize someone, you take away their dignity. You also change their status, and compromise their ability to stand on their own two feet.

In return, you should let them

know you expect them to work toward changing their financial behaviors with the help of a quality financial counselor — one with the heart of a teacher. It’s often difficult for parents to accept advice and suggestions from their own children, but it’s for their own good.

Sit down with them, and gently let them know how much you care, and how much you want better, happier lives for them.
