Maine East seniors work to help fight world hunger Students work to raise awareness of hunger issues throughout the world

The Maine East High School seniors worked to bring attention to how hunger affects people throughout the world during a Hunger Banquet held last week.

The event was organized by students from advanced placement environmental science class and the ecology club.

It was part of the Maine East Global Initiative, a year-long, schoolwide effort to raise money to help a village in Kenya.

The students wanted to put together an event that would not only inform others about hunger, but show participants how it affects millions of people throughout the globe.

Senior Jordimar Arriaga said that the Hunger Banquet started out as a project he and his partner did for their enviromental science class.

They felt that poverty and the environment were interconnected, citing availability of clean, safe drinking water as an example.

As part of the project, they decided to do an event that would raise awareness about how access to food and water affects people.

Shelby Riha, the APES teacher and the ecology club faculty sponsor, said the project was part of something she started recently.

Students pair up to work on a year-long project, and they get to choose their topic.

The project soon expanded to include other students who formed an organizing committee to put an event together.

To get their message across, they decided to use the Oxfam Hunger Banquet model.

Guests are randomly split into three groups – a low-income group, middle-income group and highincome group.

The concept was developed

by Oxfam America, a non-profit organization that works to fight hunger and poverty.

It provides any interested organization with a “toolkit” with planning guides, tips and a suggested script The Hunger Banquet was held May 5 inside the teachers’ lounge.

The high-income group was

The middle-class group, fittingly, sat closer to the middle, and they got chairs, but not a table. The lowerincome group sat on the floor.

Throughout the initial presentation, students made a point to frame hunger as a global issue.

There were wealthy and poor people in every country, and while some countries have better safety nets then others, there is no place on Earth where the issues they touched on don’t exist.

The students also emphasized that while it’s possible to eventually earn more money and move up, the reverse is also true.

They gave an example of a series of bad harvest sending a family of farmers into poverty.

During the course of the banquet, several low-income guests were sent to the middle-class group, but several middle-class guests were also sent to the lower-income area.

Once the presentation ended, guests were offered food.

The high-income guests got to eat first. The middle-income guests got plainer food, and men got priority.

The low-income group had to eat last, and they only got pasta and “dark-colored, dirty water” (in reality, tea) – and men got priority as well.

Phillip Hua-Pham, a senior who has experience working in the restaurant, made all the food.

He said that he got involved at his teacher’s urging, and he saw it as a good way to use his skills for a good cause.

He said that for him, the blight of the the poor and disadvantaged isn’t just an abstract concept.

“My family came from Vietnam, and they had to work very hard to get what we needed,” Hua-Pham said.

Thushara Thomas, a Maine East freshman who was one of the lowincome guests, said that the way food was handed out drove home the reality that many people may not fully appreciate.

“It puts us in perspective, and it shows that we can do more to give back,” she said. “Most of us don’t know about it. I think we should all spend time [learning] how everyone lives.”

“I knew about [the proportions] before, but having shown them, right in front of my eyes, shows just how few people can make it to upper class,” she said.

Kaewwilai also said that she liked the banquet in general.

“I like [seeing] one community coming together to learn about the different communities throughout the world,” she said.

Even the students who helped organized the banquet, who know what would happen every step of the way, were moved by actually seeing it unfold.

“Seeing those scenarios – it really brings it home,” Arriaga said. “It makes you realize all those scenarios are actually going on [in real life].”

Riha told the Bugle that she wasn’t sure whether the Hunger Banquet would be back next year.

While she would like to do it again, it would depend on what the students want.

“Maybe they’ll be able to link it to higher education, or deforestation, or mining,” Riha said.

District 219 celebrates during annual Powerful Partnerships Breakfast

Over the years, Niles Township High School District 219 has established a number of partnerships with businesses, community organizations and educational institutions. Many of those partnerships fly under the radar.

For the past seven years, the district has put the spotlight on those partnerships during the annual Powerful Partnerships Breakfast, where everyone involved gets together to talk about what they’ve been able to accomplish.

The presentations showcased a variety of science, art and career development programs. In many cases, the people that attended the breakfast got to hear first-hand accounts from students who had benefited from them.

This year, the breakfast was held at Niles North High School May 10 at 7:30 a.m.

Principal Ryan McTague was the first to speak and thanked everyone in attendance for all of they’ve done over the past year.

“Thank you for all you do for our students, and we’re blessed to have such a strong community,” he said.

Jim Szczepaniak, the district’s community relations director, said

that while there was much to be proud of, no one should rest on their laurels.

“We’re constantly making improvements on working better together,” he said.

Szczepaniak said two partnerships in particular stood out this year: District 219’s

collaborations with its feeder school districts and its fine arts programs.

In fact, the first presentation dealt with one of the newer artrelated collaborations. In August 2015, three Niles North alumni who used to be part of the school’s Take One vocal jazz group, formed the Niles North Vocal Jazz Alumni

Foundation. One of those alumni, Julie Burt Nichols, explained that personal experience taught her just how much of a difference financial assistance can help.

Village outsources health inspection services Move comes a month after the village’s part-time inspector retired

The Morton Grove Village Board voted unanimously to outsource its health inspection services to the village of Glenview.

The move comes a month after the village’s part-time inspector retired.

Village Administrator Ralph Czerwinski explained to the Bugle that such an arrangement is not unique in the Chicago area.

Glenview already provides health inspection services to Lincolnwood, and the village of Wilmette provides such services to several North Shore suburbs.

Under the terms of the agreement, Morton Grove will pay Glenview $80 per inspection. The village estimates that it will cost

about $25,000 a year.

Based on his review, Czerwinski said Glenview’s two full-time inspectors will be able to address Morton Grove’s needs, while still serving Lincolnwood and their own village.

The Morton Grove village administrator told the Bugle that there are only 400 individuals in the entire state of Illinois that have the certification necessary to do health inspections. When the village’s parttime inspector retired, there were only so many people that could be considered as a replacement.

“We thought it would be difficult to find a sanitarian that fits our needs,” said Czerwinski. “[We thought] there would be savings involved in using resources among multiple jurisdictions.”

He said getting two full-time inspectors, as opposed to a parttime inspector, without actually having to hire two more employees made sense.

Czerwinski told the board that when the Morton Grove inspector retired in early April, the village asked Glenview if it would be interested in

trial period of a few weeks while it worked on developing a more longterm agreement.

“We were very satisfied with their response, their service and the way they spoke with the residents,” he said, adding that the inspectors’ ability to interact with residents was just as important as how well they did their job.

The agreement specifies that, while the inspectors were Glenview employees, the results of their inspections would be filed with Morton Grove.

In response to trustees’ questions, Czerwinski said the inspectors would do surprise inspections that would follow both county and state standards. They would also be able to respond to emergencies.

Czerwinski emphasized that the inspectors would treat Morton Grove as they would treat their own village.

“We don’t want our work to be second fiddle to theirs,” Czerwinski added. The agreement will run though the end of 2016, and Morton Grove has an option to extend it for two years. The agreement can

be canceled at any time by either party, so long as they provide a 30day notice.

While Czerwinski said that he didn’t foresee any problems, he noted that the agreement’s structure makes it easy for Morton Grove to pull out if something goes wrong.

“If it doesn’t [work], we’ll provide due notice,” he said. “If they don’t correct [the issue], we’ll move on.”

Morton Grove looks to form special events commission The village board is expected to vote on whether to create a new commission tasked with organizing community events.

The Morton Grove Special Events Commission would include the Morton Grove police chief, public works director, a village trustee, a Morton Grove Park District official, members of the Morton Grove Days Commission and two residents who have experience organizing special events. The commission would be

primarily responsible for organizing Morton Grove Days and any other events the village board asks them to oversee.

Officials noted that the Morton Grove Days Commission would remain entact, and it would still be responsible for raising funds for the event. The new commission would be responsible for proposing a budget for community events and submitting it to the village for approval.

According to board documents, the special events commission was actually proposed by the Morton Grove Days Commission, which voted to transfer management of the annual event to the village.

Morton Grove already pays liability insurance and overtime expenses for village staff that are involved in the event. The special events commission would give the village more oversight, and allow it to provide event volunteers insurance coverage. The village board held the first reading during its May 9 meeting. It is scheduled to hold a second and final reading during its May 23 meeting.

Area police raise the roof for Special Olympics Niles, Park Ridge and Morton Grove among participating in statewide fundraiser Bugle Staff Officers from area police departments will be heading to their local Dunkin Donuts locations Friday on a mission to support Special Olympics Illinois.

The Niles, Park Ridge and Morton Grove police departments are among more than 150 police departments participating in the 14th annual Dunkin’ Donuts Cop on Rooftop event, scheduled to take place between 5:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. May 20. A part of the SOI Law

Enforcement Torch Run, the Cop on Rooftop event raises funds for SOI and its athletes.

This year is the first time th Morton Grove Police Department will participate in the event. Morton Grove officers will conduct their “rooftop stakeout” at the Dunkin Donuts located at 5843 Dempster.

The Niles Police Department will hold rooftop stakeouts at three Dunkin Donuts locations in Niles: 7039 W. Dempster, 7525 N. Harlem and 7235 N. Caldwell.

Since beginning in 2003, almost $2.3 million has been raised during the Cop on Rooftop fundraiser.

When reading Robert Frost’s classic poem “The Road Not Taken,” it’s tempting to see only one simple message in his words. As Frost comes to a fork in his path, he chooses the one that appears less worn, less chosen by others. Doing so, in his own view, makes all the difference.

Readers tend to see this as an ode to going your own way, which is important.

At the same time, it is equally important that the author is making a choice at all, in large part because he must; the path has forced his hand. From the place where the roads of life diverge, we can all choose the new path we will take.

Making changes is hard. As I’ve mentioned in previous columns, there is a typical series of stages that we all encounter on our way to lasting change, beginning with the point where we aren’t thinking about it or we just don’t want to do it, and culminating in a permanent lifestyle alteration. To get to the other side of the change hurdle, remember there’s many ways from here to there.

But, all is not lost. We can take a cue from Malcolm Gladwell, an author and cultural observer who looks for unique stories that contain hidden truths about our lives. One of his stories involves Howard Moscowitz – one of the most influential market researchers in the food industry.

Moscowitz was once hired by spaghetti sauce manufacturer Prego to determine the ideal sauce for consumers because they were losing market share to Ragu. What Moscowitz discovered is that there is no such thing as one perfect sauce – a conclusion identical to what he reported to Pepsi years earlier when asked to identify the perfect level of soda sweetness.

What Prego and Pepsi hoped to discover was the one magical formula that could please everyone. However, the reality was more complicated.

Rather than one sauce to meet the tastes of millions of people, there needs to be many different sauces and even more different flavors of soda.

So how does that help any of us, aside from filling local store shelves with dozens of choices?

What it means is that when we are dealing with turning points, life transitions and other challenges, there are many possible pathways.

When others can relate to the struggles we experience, they tend to offer advice that mirrors what they did in a similar situation. Despite their good intentions, our friends and loved ones might be setting up a vicious game called “Why don’t you? / Yeah, but…” that never ends well. This game starts with a seemingly helpful suggestion, such as “Why don’t you start running every day” in response to a person expressing their desire to lose weight.

The reply then comes back, “Yeah, but my knees are bad and I don’t have good shoes.” More ideas are piled on in search of the key that will fit the situation. After

of the paths that have worked for others: exercise, nutrition, professional counseling, 12-step meetings, medication, faith groups, journaling and moving to a healthier environment.

Looking to role models for paths to success can be useful. Patterns of thinking and acting that have worked for others might also prove effective for us. Not always, though, and probably not in the exact same way.

Adaptability is one of the great human traits, so use it to your full advantage.

Rather than focusing on what doesn’t work, such as trying to run if you are the person with bad knees, look at what you can do. And instead of emphasizing the laundry list of obstacles that you can’t change, put your attention on what you can control.

keeP CoMiNG BACk Three final points to consider. One, starting with baby steps works best.

Small changes tend to snowball into larger changes. Even a slight shift in our daily routine can produce significant changes in mood and behavior.

Secondly, whereas Robert Frost doubted that he would ever return to the same point in the road, we ourselves often face similar difficulties repeatedly, and that’s OK. If what we tried before didn’t work, we have 19 or more other solutions to try.

Finally, as lonely as the journey might seem at times, we are all in good company. The fears, hopes, dreams and joys of life are universal; shared by all of the travelers on a road together.

Niles West gymnasts earn the program’s first-ever state championship

To simply say the Niles West boys gymnastics team made history at the IHSA state meet would be an understatement.

The Wolves tallied 154.7500 points at the meet, beating Glenbard West’s 154.4000 points to claim the program’s first-ever state championship and the first title for Niles West since the girls basketball team won state in 1979.

“This year was about the team and getting there and seeing how we can stack up against the other teams in the state,” said Wolves’ coach Adrian Batista. “I have never had a meet ever in all my years coaching where everyone hit so perfect. If anyone would have fallen, it was over for us.”

The margin of victory was the closest in the state meet since at least 1997, the earliest records kept by the IHSA. “We gave it our all and we hit everything perfect,” said senior David Thai. “If we even made that one little mistake, we would have been done for. It felt really good to hit everything 100 percent. We knew we would come in as an underdog, but it gave us more motivation to come in and beat everyone else out.

“Coach told us that is was about all of us and that we needed every tenth, so we had to be more independent and stop relying on him and that helped us step up a lot.”

Not winning the sectional just added to the motivation for the team at state.

“Our goal at sectional was to do enough to get in because we knew we were a lot better,” Batista said. “ Our ring team didn’t hit like it usually hits and our vault team was hitting great. We knew what we were up against. Glenbard West threw their best score at sectional, so we knew they were

there to play and we knew Palatine was really good and Deerfield. We knew from first to eight was going to be just a handful of points.”

Niles West may have been an underdog in the sense that it was an at large team, but it also had one of the state’s top weapons in senior Nomondalai Jamiyankhuu, who came in as the defending allaround champion.

And, in the midst of the team taking the title, Jamiyankhuu defended that title, scoring 55.35

points. He scored a 9.35 on floor, 9.45 on pommel horse, 9.15 on rings, 9.55 on vault, 9.05 on parallel bars and an 8.8 on high bar.

And while Jamiyankhuu was the team’s top gymnast, he was not the only reason the Wolves won state.

“Without Dali, we couldn’t do it – but Dali couldn’t have done it without every guy on that team and they all know that,” Batista said.

The gymnasts do understand.

“He was the driving force, but out of the 154.75 that we scored, he only went 55 of that,” said Liam Berg. “So we had to find the rest of the points and that comes from working hard every day and blood and sweat for four years.”

Batista said the team effort even came from the guys who competed, but did not score.

Berg said the team was more focused for that meet than any he has been a part of.

“We knew we had the ability all year to be top in the state, but we hadn’t shown it,” he said. “We were serious on the bus ride over and the minute we walked into the gym, it was 100 percent focus.

I gave a speech right before and everyone was hyped and it was the best feeling I have had in my life. It wasn’t individual gymnasts, it was a collective effort. We were so focused, we didn’t have our phones out during the breaks. It was a great feeling.”

That feeling, Batista said, extends beyond just the team.

“This is huge,” he said. “It’s great for the school, it’s great for the kids and it’s great for the community, so we are excited for that.”

At Saturday’s individual competition, Jamiyankhuu did not compete to attend prom, but several others did.

Only Thai advanced to the finals, placing fourth in the rings with a score of 8.90.

Niles to be represented at state track meet The Niles area will be well resented at the girls state meet this weekend at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

Competition is Friday and Saturday.

Headlining the advancers is the 4x800-meter relay squad of Kalina Gardiner, Casey Bomrad, Laura Downey and Olivia Niziolek, which took second with a time of 9:22.32.

Joining them will be Katie Dingle in the high jump (5-feet, 1-inch), Madeline Dingle in the 3200 (10:55.82) and Nizolek in the 1600 (5:07.15).

Headed to state for Niles West are Nicole Cho in the pole vault (10-3), Jazmine Rafanan in the 100 hurdles (15.43) and Merima Mackic in the 800 (2:19.96).

Maine East’s Karen Parra is headed to state in the high jump with a height of 4-11.

BADMINTON Gloria Majka of Maine East won a pair of matches at the state meet after an opening loss.

She defeated Leeza Bodnar of Stagg 21-13, 21-12 and Kamila Czyszczon of Palatine 21-16, 216.

SOFTBALL Maine South beat Niles West 12-4. Maddie Rog allowed four runs, two earned and struck out 10 and added two hits with a homer and three RBI at the plate.

Gabi Lazxara (double), Toni Tortorella (double, 2 RBI), Olivia Frink (2 doubles, 2 RBI) and Julia Bork (homer) all had three hits. Gianna Mahoney (home run), Erynn Modena (double) and Leah Steinfield had two hits each, while Emily Butera had two RBI.

The Hawks beat Maine West 4-1 as Stefanie Guercio allowed six hits and one earned run, striking out 10. Bork had three hits with a double and two RBI, while Lazzara and Sarah Hoffman (homer, 2 RBI) each had two hits.

The foundation is raising money to help students pay for uniforms, workshops and trips. According to its website, the organization is looking to raise $3,000 by July 31 – a goal which, as of this issue’s print deadline, was close to being complete.

The speakers also delved into partnerships geared toward helping special needs students improve their life skills.

Niles West teamed up with Skokie-based Sweetie Pies Bakery for a program where the students sold pastries and coffee to school teachers and students.

The presentations also touched on a different kind of collaboration with another food-related business.

The district’s Bridges program, which helps special education students transition toward independent living, teamed up with Skokie-based Jet’s Pizza.

One of those students, Cameron Garrett, said that the program had been a big help.

“I feel it helped tremendously,” he said. “It helped me get a job at

Garrett credited Greg Arias, the pizzeria’s manager, who helped him personally.

Arias said that, in his opinion, he didn’t do much – but he was happy to do what he could.

“I know that the bottom line is the bottom line, but helping the community – it’s something you should consider as well,” he said.

Arias said that his interactions with his students have been rewarding.

“It’s amazing watching them come in,” he said. “First, walls are up, and no one is talking.

And, slowly, walls come down. It’s incredibly gratifying to see.”

Other presentations dealt with morecareer-orientatedpartnership, such as the partnership between the district and Evanston Hospital that allows students interested in medical science an opportunity to get an inside look at how a media facility works and the equipment they use.

As Szczepaniak explained, the partnership provided what is becoming an increasingly rare opportunity.

“It’s increasingly difficult to get into the hospitals with all the hoops we have to jump through,” he said.

Other presentations touched on collaborations with feeder elementary school districts.

Annaliisa Ahlman, Niles North theater teacher, said that her school and the feeders were able set up a unique creative collaboration.

“We invite students to tell their stories to us,” she said. “Working with the high school students, we develop them into dramatic performances.”

The drama students staged one example – a play called “Lost Island” by second grader Al Merchant.

Joan Gallagher, the Director of Science at Niles North, talked about the RISE science program, which allowed 25 science students from Old Orchard Elementary to work with the more advanced equipment at the high school.

Finally, the breakfast provided students with opportunities to talk about ways to create a more equitable society.

Bushra Amiwala, a Niles North student, talked about how she spoke out against Islamophobia during a rally in Evanston.

“The sense of fulfillment from doing something[like that] is indescribable,” she said.

The breakfast ended with a performances by one of the beneficiaries of the partnerships it was meant to celebrate – the Take One jazz group.

According to the event program, the next breakfast will take place on April 25, 2017, at Niles West.

Try negotiating a settlement on old debt Sometimes if you offer a sum up front, you may be able to settle your debt for a lower cost Dear Dave, I’ve had a judgment filed against me for an old, unpaid medical bill.

The original amount was $2,500, but now it has increased to $3,200. Can I negotiate this with the lawyer? I’ve asked him for a detailed statement of the account several times, but all I’ve gotten is a payment booklet.

Bill Dear Bill, When it comes to paying off bills or debt, you should always pay what’s owed if you have the money.

There’s a moral, as well as legal, responsibility involved. That being said, if you don’t have $3,200, offer him whatever you’ve got — $2,000 or the original $2,500 as a settlement.

Make sure he understands that you’re not offering to pay the amount you have on the debt, but that it’s being offered as settlement in full if the debt is cleared.

The reason you haven’t gotten what you’ve asked for so far is you may have been talking to some low-

level staffer or paralegal. If you have been talking directly to the lawyer, then he’s probably running a small debt collections or debt lawsuit machine. That means you’re just one of dozens of widgets coming down the line. To you, this is very personal. But to him, you’re just another account. You might have to do something to get his attention and wake him up.

If this is the case, he probably gets a piece of whatever he collects. So, if he gets a third of $2,000 or $2,500 it might make his house payment this month. You could also talk to the hospital administrator, too, and let them know you’ll bring a couple thousand down there today if they’ll accept it as payment in full.

At this point, you’ve just got to do something to get off the conveyor belt!

Quincy Dear Quincy, The short answer is no. There might be a rare exception when I’d use a variable annuity — which is a mutual fund inside of an annuity — but as a rule I don’t use annuities.

And I certainly don’t use fixed annuities for anything, because they’re just crap. Basically, they’re a CD with a huge set of fees. It’s just an insurance agent’s product, really.

The place for variable annuities might be when you’ve got everything else maxed out and your house is paid off. If you’ve reached

that point, you can talk to your advisor about some of the possible benefits of a variable annuity. You can leave a beneficiary on it, so that it passes outside of probate, and you’ve got some principle guarantees and return guarantees that are decent. The returns are a little lower, though, because you’ll get hit with both the annuity fee and the mutual fund fee.

So, by and large the answer is no for most people, because they don’t have their house paid off and aren’t

maxing out all other retirement options. If you’re doing all that, and you want to do something in this area, then I might think about it.

General Assembly approves $700 million to human services agencies Senate Bill 2038 would allocate funds to local government and nonprofit agencies Bugle Staff The Illinois Senate and House of Representatives approved legislation last week that would provide $700 million in funding to human service agencies throughout the state.

Senate Bill 2038 would allocate funds to local government and nonprofit agencies that provide services such as mental health care, drug addiction treatment and home-delivered meals for seniors. The House passed the bill

111-0-3, while the Senate voted 55-0 to pass the measure.

“Just like we did with emergency funding for higher education a few weeks ago, this is another example of Republicans and Democrats working together to identify available revenue to provide a temporary lifeline through the end of this fiscal year,” Rep. Ron Sandack. R-Downers Grove, said in a news release.

Despite being approved by the House and Senate, SB 2038 still awaits Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s signature.

State Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, is a co-sponsor of the legislation.

He also called the bill an example of bipartisan cooperation, but stressed that there is still work to do.

“Just as with recent funding for higher education, Democrats and Republicans came together,” McGuire said. “But just as with the higher education measure, this human services measure provides less than half of what the General Assembly one year ago authorized the governor to devote to helping people. We must keep working.”

If signed into law, SB 2038 would allocate $248 million to the Department of Human Services, $243.5 million to the

Department of Aging, $170.5 million to the Department of Revenue, $18 million to the Department of Public Health, $9.1 million to the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority, $5.4 million for Department of Healthcare and Family Services, $1.3 million to the Department of MIlitary Affairs, $458,000 to the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, and $343,500 to the Department of Transportation.

“I eagerly voted for this measure because the services involved are extremely important and should be taken out of negotiations, as we try to embark upon reforms that will make our government better

serviceable to its people,” Rep. Mark Batinick, R-Plainfield, said.

State Sen. Jennifer BertinoTarrant, D-Shorewood, said the stopgap measure is a step in the right direction to providing programs for seniors, the disabled, the homeless and people being treated for addiction with needed aid.

“But, it doesn’t include all of the state dollars our human service agencies were anticipating and should receive,” she said. “More has got to be done, and I will continue pushing for a complete human services budget.”
