Launch dates for Pulse bus service delayed Milwaukee Ave. line debut may be late 2018, early 2019 but preliminary construction underway on new stations

Pace Suburban Bus began work on bus stations for its new rapid transit system, Pulse, this spring.

But the company has pushed back the Pulse launch date to later this year or early next year.

Two Pulse lines will go through Niles on Milwaukee Avenue and Dempster Street. They’re the first of 24 planned express routes across the Chicago area.

“The project timeline has been extended as needed to accommodate more time to secure the appropriate permits,” Pace spokeswoman Maggie Daly Skogsbakken said. “We’re disappointed by the delays, but not surprised. It’s difficult to predict process times as

they vary by municipality and project and often take longer on new projects.”

By this month, construction crews had dug out the perimeter of new stations along Milwaukee.

The completed bus stops are supposed to feature vertical markers, heated shelters, raised platforms and real-time bus tracker displays, according to documents on Pace’s website.

“Any difficulties that they might be having, those aren’t coming from the Village of Niles. That might have something to do with the state of Illinois,” Niles Trustee Denise McCreery said. “Whenever you improve transportation, it’s good for residents.”

The Milwaukee Pulse will make 10 stops from Jefferson Park Transit Center to Golf Mill Shopping Cen-

ter. Buses are scheduled to run every 10 minutes during peak hours, and every 15 to 30 minutes during off-peak hours and weekends. Pace officials say they plan to launch the Dempster Pulse route by the end of 2020. It will make 17 stops from the Davis Street Purple Line station in Evanston to O’Hare Airport.

“Extensive research and public input helped identify priority routes,” Pace said in a statement.

“Seven priority routes have been identified for development over the

next 10 years.”

The first Pulse line is estimated to cost $14 million total, with some of that paid for by federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) grants. The new buses will have WiFi networks and USB ports for commuters.

“Even though we have a free bus in Niles this is nice because it’s an express bus,” McCreery said. “It is an opportunity for people to come into our community and shop.”

Pace plans to install Transit Sig-

nal Priority (TSP) technology at intersections to keep buses on schedule. The devices, which change lights faster when necessary, cost about $50,000 each. Pace obtained Congressional funding for the 12 Milwaukee stoplights and 50 Dempster stoplights that will use TSP technology.

“The selected Pulse station locations are strategically located to serve current Pace bus riders,” Skogsbakken said. They “have been chosen based on current rider use, safety, and accessibility.”

Halsted Street and Cermak Road Pulse lines will launch after the Milwaukee and Dempster routes, which run next to the current Pace 270 and 250 buses. Skogsbakken said Pulse is a complement to existing bus routes, not a replacement.

The fares will be the same.

Construction on the new bus shelters is slated to begin this spring and summer. At some stops, Pace has already added reinforced cement street pads for the buses.

D.63 board names new principal for Gemini In 2019, Gemini will expand to serve 6th graders as well, serving more than 1,000 students The East Maine School District 63 Board of Education last week approved the appointment of Gemini Junior High’s new Principal. Lewis Roberts, currently principal of the district’s Mark Twain Elementary School, has been named to the top slot at Gemini following retirement of current Principal Dr. René Carranza, who is retiring this year.

Gemini at 8955 Greenwood in Niles, currently serves more than 750 7th-8th grade students living in Des Plaines, Glenview, Niles, Morton Grove, and Park Ridge.

Roberts earned a BA in political science from the University of Central Florida and graduated with distinction from Capella University in Minneapolis with an MS in education. Before joining District 63 in 2015 as assistant principal for Apollo Elementary School, he served as assistant principal at Ombudsman Chicago South, part of the Chicago Public Schools Option Schools Program.

Roberts began his career in Florida as a social studies/reading teacher at AMIkids Orlando, a nonprofit that offers alternative education to youth with challenges. Other past positions include lead K-8 teacher at Passport Charter School, where he was 2010-2011 Teacher of the Year, and academic coach at Shingle Creek Elementary School, both in Orlando. Roberts was promoted to the Mark Twain leadership position in 2016.

In 2019, Gemini will expand to serve 6th graders as well, serving more than 1,000 students. This July, the District will break ground on an addition to the school, cre-

ating the space needed to serve three grades – and the Gemini team, led by Roberts, will undertake the work to transition from a junior high to a middle school.

District Superintendent Dr. Scott Clay noted, “This is an exciting time for Gemini – and for District 63. Mr. Roberts’ breadth of experience and proven leadership in the District make him the ideal Principal to guide the school through this transition. With successful experiences in elementary, middle, and high school he brings an in-depth understanding of the role of middle level education.”

Public Service Director announces resignation Mary Anderson announces her resignation from position of Director of Public Services On April 25, Mary Anderson announced her resignation from the position of Director of Public Services for the Village of Niles. Her last day in this position was April 30.

Mary Anderson started working for the Village of Niles on October 27, 2014, rising to the top from a pool of 30 candidates following a three-month-long search process to fill the vacant Public Services Director position.

Anderson previously was the Director of Public Works for the municipalities of Champaign and Highland Park in Illinois, and Port Orange in Florida. She was appointed a Public Works Leadership Fellow by the American Public Works Association in 2013.

Anderson’s career in Niles was marked by several significant marquee projects, most notably the implementation of the Storm Water Master Plan Tier 1.

The Tier 1 projects included the ambitious and successful Cleveland Corridor Sewer Improvement project, which was the largest infrastructure project in Village history and finished a year ahead of schedule. Other projects included Milwaukee Avenue streetscape improvements, renovations of the Leaning Tower of Niles, and overseeing the Village’s ADA transition plan.

She also was personally involved with developing the Village’s traffic calming policy, implementation of the first traffic-calming project, bicycle lane installation, ongoing fleet downsizing or “right-sizing,” and staffing optimization.

Mary Anderson’s career with the Village of Niles came during a time of exciting legacy projects, and she leaves a lasting positive impact on the lives of current and future residents.

Village Manager Steve Vinezeano praised her “unwavering dedication and service to the Village of Niles over the past 3.5 years,” further noting, “It has been a personal pleasure to work alongside her on the challenges associated with stormwater, the new water project, and the professionalization of the Public Services Department.

Her support will be missed.”

Following Anderson’s resignation, current Niles Public Services Assistant Director and Superintendent of Streets and Sewers, Fred Braun, will be the interim Director of Public Services.

Department Heads and Committee members will be officially appointed for the new fiscal year at the May 22 Village Board Meeting, and an interim Director would be appointed at that time if a new permanent hire has not been chosen.

Walgreens, America’s pharmacist, got its start in Illinois In ‘50s Walgreens entered modern retail era By Christopher Placek cplacek@ dailyherald. com A pharmacist at Walgreens for 37 years, Joel Karlinsky might often see people on their worst days, coming to him for antidotes to their health maladies.

But in providing a helping hand and friendly smile, Karlinsky formed a bond with his customers. One regular appreciated the service so much that he had an engraved Montblanc pen made for Karlinsky with the pharmacist’s name on it.

“I tried to go out of my way to be nice to them,” said Karlinsky, now retired, who for a time managed the pharmacy at a Walgreens near the company’s Deerfield headquarters. “Customer service goes a long way. Everybody fills the same prescriptions, but if you’re providing them with a friendly, knowledgeable individual, that gives them a level of service above and beyond.”

That pharmacist’s personalized touch mirrors the 117-year-old company’s origin story, when founder Charles R. Walgreen Sr. and colleague Arthur C. Thorsen personally greeted each customer who came to the door of their modest 20-by-50-foot pharmacy on Chicago’s South Side.

Some customers also called in their orders to Walgreen. He famously tried to keep the person on the phone long enough to give his assistant Caleb Danner time to gather the requested items and personally deliver them.

Company historians have coined it the “two-minute drill.”

“He was bringing a new level of customer service to the industry,” said Michael Polzin, a longtime Walgreens spokesman. “It was one of the things he focused on early on.”

Walgreen, born near Galesburg, moved to Dixon with his family as a child. At 16, he got his first pharmacy job, working for Horton’s Drugstore, where he earned $4 a week. He quit after a year and a half, but continued in the pharmacy business, working for

several pharmacists after arriving in Chicago in 1893.

Walgreen ended up at Isaac Blood’s drugstore inside Barrett’s Hotel at the corner of Cottage Grove and Bowen avenues. In 1901, Blood sold the store to Walgreen for $6,000. It took Walgreen years to pay off a loan he needed to make the purchase.

Walgreen became an innovator, taking what had been a dimly lit drugstore and installing bright lights. He widened the aisles and started selling items uncommon for pharmacies at the turn of the century, like pots and pans.

Walgreen, like other pharmacists, introduced the soda fountain to his stores, but he kept his open yearround, serving his wife Myrtle’s homemade specialties, like chicken, tongue and egg salad sandwiches, bean and cream of tomato soup, and cakes and pies.

In 1919, Walgreen had 20 stores, which a decade later grew to 525.

Company historians have attributed Walgreens tremendous growth in the 1920s to the popularity of the malted milkshake, invented by soda jerk Ivar “Pop” Coulson in 1922. Coulson added vanilla ice cream to the common malted milk drink, which consisted of milk, chocolate syrup and malt powder.

Daniel Okrent, in his book “Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition,” suggests the store also benefited from alcohol sales during that time, because pharmacies were allowed to sell booze

for medicinal purposes.

It was in the 1950s when Walgreens entered the modern retail era, with the introduction of self-service stores. Until then, clerks working behind counters retrieved goods off shelves for customers.

By the 1980s, the company was building more and more stand-alone stores instead of those in strip malls or attached to other retailers. By the next decade, the company started building drive-through pharmacy lanes.

Expansion has continued in recent years: in 2010, Walgreens acquired New York-based pharmacy chain Duane Reade; in 2014, it merged with Switzerland-based Alliance Boots, and in 2017, it got regulatory approval to purchase about 2,000 Rite Aid stores.

With that addition, Walgreens will have about 10,000 locations in the United States.

So how can a chain that’s become America’s pharmacist maintain its personal touch?

“It was so important to Charles Walgreen Sr. to make that connection with his customers,” says Polzin, the company spokesman. “I think that carries through today, too.

“Obviously, we’re a much, much bigger retailer and pharmacist than we were back then, but we still want to provide that care to each individual that comes into our stores.”

For anyone who plays college football, their ultimate dream is to hear their name called at the NFL Draft as one of the more than 250 selections by the 32 teams of the National Football League.

That was the dream of Plainfield East graduate Tyler Lancaster – at least for 240 or so picks.

Toward the end of the seventh, and final, round – Lancaster and his agent had agreed to a deal with the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent. And with Packer hat in hand, he informed those close to him of the exciting news.

The only issue was there were still teams that could ruin the moment.

“It was a very weird feeling because I got very excited about Green Bay and I told everyone that, but there were still 10 picks left. I was hoping nothing did change. So many people want to hear their name, but at that time, I was hoping not to hear it,” Lancaster said. “It was a stressful day. I knew what to expect, but you never know what it’s like until you get there,” Lancaster said.

“I was sitting, waiting with friends and family, and by the time the seventh round comes around, I am texting with my agent and we had already narrowed down the teams we were considering based on depth chart, the interest they

showed in me and the coaching staff. Green Bay was on the top from the very beginning and it felt right.”

Lancaster did not hear his name and he became a Packer as he had wanted.

“About mid seventh round, the D Line coach (of the Packers) and said they took a defensive lineman out of Cal (James Looney) and that they wouldn’t take another D lineman, but they still really wanted me in free agency,” Lancaster said. “I kept that in mind and I took a call from my agent and he said if I went in free agency there were deals in place and the Packers were on top and I knew that was what I was going to do. So, it was decided with 10 or 12 picks left.”

Lancaster, the 6-foot, 3-inch, 313 pound Romeoville resident, was signed by Green Bay as a defensive lineman, a position he played at Northwestern after converting from offensive line after high school.

“I am a D lineman and I am excited for that, but I will say what I said back then and that’s put me on the field coach – I don’t care where it is,” he said. “I don’t feel any less valued as guys that were drafted and I know I can compete.”

That attitude was what got Lancaster a spot with the Wildcats and ultimately his crack at the NFL. “His senior season, we moved

He had about six offers, but he had a dream school and that was Northwestern, but they had five linemen offered and all five committed and Tyler was kind of the sixth guy,” said former Plainfield East head coach Mike Romelli. “(Northwestern) told us that they did have some scholarships open and if he wanted to come and earn a scholarship at summer camp, they would be happy to have him. That day, he was offered as an athlete because he basically

blew up whatever drills they had.

Then that summer he made the ‘The Opening’ which is a big deal with Nike and he was able to fly out to Nike headquarters and he was one of the top linemen in the country.

“At Northwestern, they planned on playing him as a D lineman and he had a rough go. His freshman year he redshirted, then his redshirt freshman year he got a concussion and didn’t play too much and he was a little bit defeated. He had a strong support at home and he stayed with it and he really started grasping things heading into his sophomore sea-

son and he had three pretty good years and had a good career. If he is given an opportunity in life, in football or in a career, he will put 100 percent into it and live it.”

With that opportunity at Northwestern, he became a beast in the middle of the defensive line and was a three-year starter, he posted 40 tackles (9.5 for loss) with two sacks as a senior. His junior year, he recorded 28 tackles (3.5 for loss) and tallied 33 tackles (5.5 for loss), 1.5 sacks and two forced fumbles as a sophomore.

“Getting No. 1 was a huge honor and I appreciate it,” Lancaster said. “And that’s all it was – hard work. That’s what I do and that’s what I did.”

He showed off what that hard work had given him.

Lancaster was not invited to the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, but at his pro day, his 36 bench press reps would have placed him fourth among defensive linemen at the combine. He also posted a 4.96 40 yard dash time, which would have tied him with Tennessee’s Kahlil McKenzie and Alabama’s Da’Ron Payne as the fastest 300-plus pound defensive linemen.

“His pro day numbers were off the charts,” Romelli said. “He attacks it and he works his butt off to get better and that is what separates Tyler from other people and he has put himself in this position.

“There will not be too many people that will out physical him, whether it is on the defensive line or the offensive line.”

If Lancaster makes the Packers’ roster, he will join Plainfield North running back Kapri Bibbs in the league. Bibbs ended last season with the Redskins and is looking to secure a spot in the Washington backfield this year.

He would be one of only four players from District 202 schools to see a snap in the NFL, joining Bibbs, Plainfield High School’s Scott Davis (25th overall selection in the 1988 NFL Draft) and former Plainfield Wildcat and current head coach of Bolingbrook High School John Ivlow appeared as a running back in two games for the Chicago Bears and won a Super Bowl with the 49ers.

As a Romeoville resident, Lancaster joins current Spartan head coach and former all-stater Oliver Gibson, as well as brothers Cameron and Byron Stingily, who were on NFL rosters.

Cameron Stingily is now on the coaching staff at Maine East High School.

Lancaster is the second professional athlete to come from Plainfield East, following Victor Pineda, who was the first homegrown player in the history of the Chicago Fire soccer team.

“I am proud of that,” Lancaster said of his background. “I am appreciative of what (Plainfield East) offered me. Coach Romelli saw

that spark in me and took an interest in me and I just want to make everyone proud. I know not many people know of Plainfield and Romeoville outside of here and I want to put it on the map and I want to see the number of guys that make it go up. My Northwestern teammate J.B. While the Packers are a good fit on the field for Lancaster, the 3.5-hour drive is a good fit for his family to watch him – which a big inspiration.

Lancaster’s dad, Brad, died in January after a battle with cancer.

“It will be really cool to have my friends and family close – my mom and my sister especially.

This has been a journey for them too and I can’t wait for them to see me play,” Lancaster said. “After my dad passed away, they have been searching for something to put their hopes in and naturally, it has become this journey to the NFL and I know it wouldn’t make anyone happier than them to see me play out there and I want to grant that to them. I know my dad is looking down, doing back flips and I know he would have wanted to see this, but he had the idea in his head that it probably wouldn’t happen, but he pushed all the way through the bowl game and was on the field with me and I was really happy to do that with him.

“Now, this is a turnaround from the trials and tribulations we went through the past few months and I appreciate the opportunity.”

While Lancaster was brought up in a hard-working, blue-collar family where he was taught to work hard for what he wanted. His dad’s fight gave him even more inspiration.

“It was incredible the hills and valleys I have had at Northwestern, but hard work and determination will get you there. I really never changed anything up – I have always put my head down and work until I pass out.

“My motto has been – ‘Remember the Why.’ Why was I going out at 4 a.m. and running until I puke, why am I lifting until my arms are tearing, why do I play this game in the first place? I would look over at my dad and see how hard he was fighting just to see me play,” Lancaster said. “On senior day, it was 30 degrees out with ice coming down so hard and tearing at our throats and my dad came down on the field with me.

I remember my why – it is for my family. They give me the motivation and I fight for them.”

Dear Dave, My mother wants everything, except for her home, left to my brother and I when she dies. She would like her long-time boyfriend to have her house. We don’t have a problem with this, but it has not been written into her will.

Her mind is still sound, so does she need to officially update the will?

Dawn Dear Dawn, Yes, the will needs to be changed to reflect her wishes where the house is concerned. Since she’s still able to make decisions independently, the will should be legally updated to reflect exactly

what she wants to have happen with every piece of her estate.

It’s fine if she wants to give her boyfriend the house. It’s your mom’s will, and her estate, so she can do pretty much whatever she wants. She could also leave what’s called a life estate that says her boyfriend gets use of the home while he’s alive. Technically, in this kind of situation the house would be left to you, but he would legally have use of it during his life. Upon his death, the home could then revert to you or your brother.
