NILES PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Trustees in war of words over election BY IGOR STUDENKOV Bugle Staff @BugleNewspapers nweditor@buglenewspapers.com
It was an evening of fond farewells and bitter recriminations during the April 19 Niles Public Library Board of Trustees meeting. It was the last meeting for Trustee Barbara Nakanishi, who chose not to run for re-election after 14 years on the board. It was also the last meeting for Trustee Rob Breit who
wasn’t able to keep the seat he was appointed to fill, coming in third in a race for two open seats. But while the meeting began with the board honoring Nakanish for her service, the end of the meeting saw an angry back and forth, as trustees Karen Dimond and Tim Spadoni accused trustee Carolyn Drblik of spreading false information while campaigning for winning candidate Dean Martin. Spadoni took particular umbrage
in some of the language, taking it as a personal insult. While Drblik acknowledged that some statements were inaccurate, she stood by the overall tenor of her letter, saying Martin had experience and perspective the majority of the board lacked.
Nakanishi was originally appointed to the board Aug. 20, 2003. She won her first election in 2005, and was re-elected in 2011. An architect by profession, she took keen interest in the 2013 library renovations. Nakanishi described making the library a great resource for patrons a major priority, as well as doing right by the library staff. She was one of the trustees who called for the library to switch from
a 401(k) style retirement system to an Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund pension plan. To celebrate Nakanishi’s service on the board, board President Linda Ryan presented her with an honorary resolution and a Key to the Library. “[Library Director Susan Lempke and I] would like to honor the way you should be honored,” she said.
