Seniors input wanted for Cook County planning Public input can help influence how services are provided The Center of Concern is partnering with AgeOptions to encourage residents to learn more about services offered to older adults and provide input for the 2019 Area Plan on Aging for Suburban Cook County. Maine Township-based Center of Concern has been providing supportive services for older adults, the disabled and others need for 40 years.

Public input can help influence how services are provided at local, state and national levels. The hearing will be held on May 10 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Des Plaines Public Library, 1501 Ellinwood Ave., Des Plaines.

Immediately following the event, residents 60-and-over and their spouses are invited to receive a nutritious lunch and the program activity on May 10 is “Bingo” with prizes at the weekday “Lunch with Us” Older Adult lunch program. Residents in-

Niles-Maine Baseball exhibit continues Library baseball exhibit continues with May events There’s still time to catch the Niles-Maine District Library’s special exhibit “Sox vs. Cubs: The Chicago Civil Wars” before it closes May 31.

Baseball lovers can immerse themselves in exhibit in the Franklin Gallery at the Niles-Maine District Library, 6960 West Oakton St. Niles. The exhibit is open to all and admission is free. The exhibit was produced by the Elmhurst History Museum.

As Sasha Vasilic, the library’s Public Relations and Marketing Supervisor, explained to the Bugle, the library wanted to display something that would bring people together.

And whether one roots for Cubs or Sox, he said, it was one of the few interests that most people throughout Chicago area share.

The exhibit examines the rich and unique history of Chicago baseball—a city divided by dedicated fans. Chicago may be divided geographically by only 10 miles, but the distance between White Sox and Cubs fans is much greater. “Sox vs. Cubs: The Chicago Civil Wars” showcases the 117-year history of the rivalry, what it means, and how it’s changed.

The exhibit included detailed display boards, artifacts such as baseball bats and a tablet-based trivia game. The display boards included a map showing which parts of Chicago and its suburbs tend to favor which team and a detailed timeline of both teams’ histories, complete with the changing names of their stadiums, the major players, historic uniform and logo designs, ownership changes and other major milestones.

Illinois rivers helped feed economic growth in state Illinois, Mississippi Rivers serving as economic engines for transportation of goods continues

BY JOSEPH BUSTOS OF THE BELLEVILLE NEWSDEMOCRAT During the first century of the state’s history, the natural habitats along the Illinois River helped spur fishing industries and had places for hunting.

The Illinois River was a habitat for bottom-feeding fish such as catfish, common carp and smallmouth buffalo as well as mussels.

The abundance of fish led to a commercial fishing industry between Havana and Meredosia, according to the state museum.

Towns had their own markets that processed and shipped fish to large Midwestern and Eastern cities from the 1890s to the 1950s.

Sport hunters formed clubs and bought land along the Illinois River to start duck hunting resorts managed by locals, according to the state museum.

However, there also was a demand to be able to transport goods, which changed life along the river.

Reports in the 1830s said the river wasn’t navigable in 70 to 80 places during the low-water months. A canal was eventually built between LaSalle and Chicago.

“The canal was instrumental in Chicago’s growth,” said Michael Wiant, the interim director for the Illinois State Museum. “There’s a recognition there, navigability on the river would give vitality to the economy of Illinois.”

Towns along the Illinois River, such as Naples, Grafton, Peoria and Beardstown, are the earliest communities in the region to be established. Ottawa had deposits of silica sand, that would be transported into Chicago for construction.

“You could begin to see the river as an artery that literally feeds the heart of the city,” Wiant said.

Levees eventually were built along waterways to keep the river in place, and maintain a channel.

That infrastructure decision also eventually drained floodplains and backwater habitats, which led to those areas becoming land for row-crop agriculture.

“The river is largely, by the early part of the 20th century, engineered to handle that transportation issue that is having vitality,” Wiant said. “But it comes at a price of not only the natural powerhouse of the backwater lakes, things like commercial fishing industries are affected negatively.

It changes the character of the river profoundly.”

Natural habitats for ducks, fish and mussels were negatively affected and populations crashed, Wiant said. Eventually there were wildlife refuges established to give habitat to ducks to try to keep those population.

“To maintain navigation, you need stable water levels. To get stable water levels you need locks and dams. To keep the channel in place you need levees,” Wiant said. “Levees then cut off the backwater lakes from the natural hydrology of the river, and while you’re producing agricultural commodities, which are good things to be sure, the price you’re paying, the natural habitats are deteriorated.”

Using the Illinois River, as well as the Mississippi River, as economic engines for the transportation of goods continues today.

In recent years, there has been an effort to increase the amount of commodities and goods that are moved down the Illinois and Mississippi rivers.

America’s Central Port has been awarded a $713,000 federal grant to help load containers on the Illinois River at Beardstown.

The containers would be sent to Chicago to be loaded onto trains, or to St. Louis where containers would be placed on trains, or continue down the Mississippi River on barges to New Orleans. The project is still in the planning stages.

Cargill has grain elevators along the Illinois river, in locations such as Havana. Barges are loaded and then sent down the river and eventually connected to the Mississippi River where they head toward the Gulf of Mexico where they are then shipped around the world to places such as Europe and Japan.

They do an incredible amount of transportation of grain from that point.”

According to the Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative, nearly $5 billion in annual revenue and 20,000 jobs are generated by commercial navigation on the Mississippi River.

In 2015, 35 million tons of goods moved on the Mississippi River through the St. Louis area, according to data provided by the St. Louis Regional Freightway, which is a freight district and comprehensive authority for freight operations and opportunities within eight counties that compose the St. Louis metropolitan area.

The St. Louis area, and the freightway district, has touted how one-third of all the river freight traffic from Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Cairo, Illinois, goes through the St. Louis region.

The St. Louis Regional Freightway is promoting the Mississippi River between Illinois and Missouri as the “Ag Coast.” Ports in the St. Louis area are the northernmost ice-free and lockfree access ports to and from the Gulf of Mexico.

New Dons’ head coach brings a championship pedigree and a passion for Notre Dame

When Nelson Gord stepped down as head coach after last season, Notre Dame College Prep looked in the same direction it has several times before for a new coach – its alumni.

The Dons tabbed 2004 graduate Dean Cademartori as Gord’s replacement.

Cademartori was on staff with the baseball program for seven seasons and brings with him a history of winning.

As a baseball player at Notre Dame, Cademartori played on the Dons’ 2004 Class 2A state championship baseball team that defeated Joliet Catholic Academy 6-4 for the title.

That year he was named as a Rawlings High School All-American, the Illinois High School Association’s Player of the Year, as well as the Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Tribune and Louisville

After a career at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Cademartori was an assistant coach at Naperville Central High School and was on staff for its 2010 state championship team.

He is now implementing that winning attitude back at his alma mater where he is in his fifth year as a teacher.

“We are trying to make this a family atmosphere and we are trying to get everyone to buy in to what we call the Notre Dame way – being disciplined and being accountable for your actions on and off the field,” Cademartori said.

He also believes that the program is on the right track.

“Besides the weather, things have been going pretty good this year,” He said. “We have a good group of kids and they have really been buying in to what we have been teaching and how the SEE DONS PAGE 6

Oakton back in national rankings In the latest National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III Baseball Poll released on April 17, Oakton Community College’s baseball team is ranked No. 11.

During the week of April 9, the

Owls went 4-1, outscoring opponents 41-18. This is the second time this season Oakton has been nationally ranked. In the poll released on March 27, the Owls checked in at No. 9.

“We’re proud for the players

and the coaching staff who have worked so hard to gain national recognition this season,” Owls head coach Bill Fratto says. “Being ranked among some great athletic programs is a remarkable achievement, and we hope to climb the

Cademartori believes his connection with the school will help get the program back to where it was when he helped it win a state championship.

“I think it helps out a lot. I went to school there and teach there now and I truly care about the school and the program and the kids see that and they see me on a daily basis,” he said. “Notre Dame loves doing (hiring alumni as head coaches). We have nine alumni head coaches and that

ladder as the season progresses.”

As a team, Oakton (20-9) is averaging 7.7 runs per game with a .325 batting average and .460 slugging percentage.

“The key for us is to stay focused, and with the talent we have, this team can make it far in the postseason,” Fratto adds.

As far as a win-loss record, this season has not been kind early on for Notre Dame, as the Dons are 4-7 on the season and – like all teams – have fought the weather thus far early in the season.

“We have had more games cancelled than played. You can take ground balls on the gym floor or off the turf or hit in the cage, but it is totally different when you get outside and that is tough when you don’t have the

reps. We would rather be playing than practicing,” Cademartori.

“We play almost every day the next couple weeks and with pitch counts it will be tough, but luckily we have enough arms and we will be ready.”

One of those pitchers has paced the Dons so far this year.

“Nate Moore has been having success – the kid works his butt off,” Cademartori said. “We have been struggling a bit and we are looking for guys to step up and we will see with some game time.

We will be ready come playoff time.”

Prior to this, we told my two nephews we would buy them laptop computers for college. They don’t get a lot of encouragement or support from their immediate family, so we try to help them when we can. Should we go ahead and honor this commitment, postpone getting our starter emergency fund in place, and possibly take on a little more debt, or

bow out of the agreement?

LISA DEAR LISA, Well, it’s difficult to be generous when you’re broke. You don’t even have $1,000 to your names, and you’re going to buy two laptops?

I don’t know how much debt you have, or what your household income is, but I do know neither of you have managed your money very well in the past.

If you make $50,000 a year, and you have $70,000 in debt, you should sincerely and apologetically bow out. Explain that you made a big mistake, and just be honest about why you can’t provide the laptops. If you make $200,000 a

year, but you’ve just been incredibly silly and lazy with your money, you should buy the laptops and then get serious about growing up and getting control of your finances. Don’t make promises, financial or otherwise, you can’t keep. I know this is a tough, embarrassing situation, but it’s what I would do if I were in your shoes.

—DAVE DEAR DAVE, Do you think the value of a “tiny home” would depreciate like a trailer?

ROMEO DEAR ROMEO, That’s a tough one. I’m not certain they would depreciate like a
