Gang awareness and afterschool activities were on the agenda during the April 12 Niles Township Youth Coalition Town Hall. During the event – held at Niles West High School – Skokie Police Department officer Al Vincic talked about the presence of gangs in Niles Township and what parents should do if they suspect their child has joined a gang.
However, some students and district staff members questioned why the topic was raised in the first place. Some expressed concerns that it might lead to profiling against minority students. Instead, they wanted to focus on increasing student achievement, reducing stigma around mental health, and encouraging students to get involved in school organizations and their community. Jim Szczepaniak, the district’s community relations director, told the attendees that the presentation about gangs came as a response
to feedback received during last year’s meeting. He emphasized that he and NTYC members appreciated the feedback this time around, and that it would be taken into account. NTYC is made up of representatives of police departments, park districts, library districts, and social service agencies and organizations in Niles, Skokie, Morton Grove and Lincolnwood.
