Save-the-Date for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 27th, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. The Des Plaines Police Department encourages the public to drop-off old, or unwanted prescription drugs at its 24/7 collection site located in the Department’s lobby at 1418 Miner Street. During last October’s National Take Back Day, collection boxes were put to good use. An application to renew your City vehicle sticker will be mailed to residents on Friday, April 12. The 2019-20 vehicle stickers will be available for purchase beginning April 15 at 8 a.m. Residents will be able to renew their vehicle stickers in person at City Hall; by US Mail; by placing the application and payment in the drop box located in the circular drive in the back of City Hall, or online.

Vehicle stickers must be purchased and placed on vehicles by 5 p.m., June 21. Enforcement and second tier pricing begins June 22.

Adopt A Planter Program The Community Relations Commission invites all Village residents and businesses to participate in the Village’s 2019 Adopt A Planter Program.

Individuals, families, organizations, businesses and other groups may sign up to “adopt” one of the large Village planters located at the train station and, Civic Center, and along Dempster Street from Central to Lehigh Avenue, and along Waukegan Road. Businesses will be given priority to adopt the planter closest to their store or office.

The Village will provide each participant with a starter kit of approved plants, name card

and a list of approved items which may be added to customize your planter. Planting day is scheduled for June 1, 2019. Participants will then care for the planter until October by adding plants and creative touches and by removing weeds and debris. The Village will water the planters approximately once each week.

Participants will receive a name card which will be displayed on the planter this year along with recognition on the Village’s website and Facebook Page. Adopting a planter is an excellent way to show your pride in our community and will help keep the Village beautiful. Interested persons should sign up before May 24, 2019. Registration forms are available on the Village’s website and at Village Hall.

The Community Relations Commission is comprised of Village residents who volunteer their time to foster and improve relations among individuals of all races, religions, national origins and economic

backgrounds.

Your dedication will be recognized by the Village Board and appreciated by the community.

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month Texting while driving distracts a driver visually, manually and cognitively

Owners of Shopping Center Present Plans Owners of Dempster & Waukegan Shopping Center Present Plans for New Lifestyle Center

For over a decade, the 26-acre Prairie View Shopping Center at Dempster and Waukegan in Morton Grove has been a run-down eyesore.

The Village offered incentives to its long-time owners to redevelop the site to no avail. Last year, the Village fined the owners $150,000 and told them to either sell the property or continue to pay large fines. In September 2018, the owners sold the center to Kensington Development Partners and IM Properties who recognized that while the property was extremely broken, it had extreme potential.

Just six months later, on April 3, 2019, Kensington presented its plans to the Village’s Appearance Commission and on April 4, 2019 to the Traffic Safety Commission to transform the property into a vibrant lifestyle center that will thrive in the online shopping era. All the existing structures except for the Bank of America building will be demolished. The new center will be renamed Sawmill Station, paying tribute to the waterpowered sawmill erected in 1841 at Dempster Street and the Chicago River to supply wood for the railroad.

The plans presented for Sawmill Station feature a diverse array of dining and entertainment opportunities including Cooper’s Hawk Winery and Restaurant, Starbucks, Chipotle, Flix Brewhouse; a ninetheatre cinema with a brewery and restaurant, and an LA Fitness Signature Club. Retail stores will include Kohl’s, Ross, Dollar Tree and a grocery store. The owners are currently in negotiations with several grocers and hope to have a lease with a preferred grocer later this year. Sawmill Station will also include 250 luxury residential apartments overlooking the forest preserves. The synergy of the residential, retail, dining and entertainment venues will create a vibrant destination for Morton Grove and surrounding area.

Mayor DiMaria stated, “Sawmill Station is exactly what our residents want and frankly what they deserve.

The new owners have a proven track

record for building premier mixeduse developments and attracting highly desired businesses. I appreciate the cooperation and progress made by the owners and our Village staff, Boards and Commissions to get to this point, and I’m optimistic and excited for our future.”

The owners and the Village are currently negotiating a financial assistance agreement to make the $135,000,000 project economically feasible. Village assistance will be provided from new property and sales taxes generated by the new restaurants and stores. The owners will also need to obtain zoning approval for the property. A public hearing before the Village plan commission has been scheduled for Monday, April 15, 2019 at 6:30 pm at Village Hall, 6101 Capulina Avenue, Morton Grove, IL. April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and the Morton Grove Police Department is partnering with the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Police, and more than 100 local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to remind drivers to drop their phones or pay up.

Motorists will see increased patrols and enforcement zones across Illinois throughout the month. The Morton Grove Police Department will be ticketing drivers who text or use their cellphones while driving.

Over the past decade, distracted driving has become one of the leading causes of vehicle crashes on our roads.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association, 3,166 people died in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers in

2017. While this represents a nine-percent decrease in distracted driving fatalities from 2016, there is clearly more work to be done.

Texting while driving distracts a driver visually, manually and cognitively. Sending or receiving a text takes a driver’s eyes off the road for an average of 4.6 seconds, the equivalent of driving blind at 55 miles per hour for the length of an entire football field.

Follow these steps for a safe driving experience: If you are expecting a text message or need to send one, pull over and park your car in a safe location. Once you are safely off the road and parked, it is safe to text.

Designate your passenger as your “designated texter.”

Allow them access to your phone to respond to calls or messages.

Do not engage in social media scrolling or messaging while driving. Cellphone use can be habit-forming.

Put your cellphone in the trunk, glove box, or back seat until you arrive at your destination.

It’s not very often that a father and son have the opportunity to play or coach with each other in any sport, but for long time Niles West coach Garry Gustafson and son Justin, they had the opportunity of a lifetime.

In Garry’s 28th season as a head coach, he had the experience of his career getting to coach against his son and Racine Park.

“Well [Justin] is such a great kid and he works really hard at what he does so it was a pretty neat thing,” Garry said.

Garry grew up loving and playing the sport, and started coaching at Niles West in 1986.

“I was the freshman coach here for about four years and then I became the head baseball coach in 1991 and its just been a dream of mine to become a head baseball coach for all of these years,”

Garry said.

Growing up in Park Ridge and raising his family there, Garry said his father was the biggest influence with him starting playing baseball at the age of seven.

Garry said his father being a general contractor who had a superb work ethic, trickled down to him and then now his son, which is where he gives the credit to all his success from.

“He basically told me hard work and dedication to whatever you do will pay-off in dividends which is what I’ve tried to express to all three of my son’s, including Justin,” Garry said.

Even though on game day Niles West defeated Racine Park 10-0, the game day experience and leading up to it was something neither, father or son will ever forget.

“It wasn’t a great day weather wise, but we were both looking forward to it so much, I actually SEE COACH PAGE 6

Like his father, Justin also teaches at his school in Wisconsin, and has been a varsity coach for two years.

Looking up to his dad from a young age, Justin knew that he always wanted to follow in his dad’s footsteps.

Justin played his high school baseball at Maine South, where he then furthered his baseball career at Carthage University.

“My dad coached me for about two years when I was about 1012, and coached my brothers for awhile as well,” Justin said.

Having the once in a lifetime opportunity to coach against his father was something Justin said he will cherish forever, because he knows how rare it is, and how great of a chance it was for his team to approve.

Man Charged with UUW after Fleeing with Switches that Convert Handguns to Fully Automatic 26-year-old Chicago man has been charged after he fled from investigators A 26-year-old Chicago man has been charged after he fled from investigators with a package containing switches that convert Glock handguns to fully automatic weapons, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced today.

ceived information from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) that a package with two switches addressed to a residence in Calumet City had been intercepted at a postal facility. At approximately 6:40 p.m. on April 9, Sheriff’s Police, HSI and the United States Postal Inspection Service executed a search warrant at the residence in the 400 block of Burnham Avenue after the package was delivered to that address.

During the execution of the search warrant, a man, later identified as Devante Murphy, fled from the residence with the pack-

age still in hand, jumping off a balcony. He was taken into custody after a short foot pursuit. Both switches were later located and recovered.

Murphy, of the 8900 block of South Union Avenue, was charged on April 10 with unlawful use of a weapon/machine gun- automatic weapon. His bond was set at $50,000-D during his court appearance today at the Markham Courthouse.

The public is reminded that the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty by the government in a court of law.

“Crimes against children are among the most despicable and those who commit them must be held accountable,” State’s Attorney Foxx said. “I commend the assistant state’s attorney, investigators, and federal agents who

The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office became aware that the defendant was living in Honduras. In collaboration with the FBI and several State’s Attorney’s Office investigators, the defendant was taken into custody in neighboring Guatemala where they had support of the Guatemalan government to make the arrest and extradite him back to the U.S. The offender arrived in Chicago via FBI transport on Wednesday, April 10, 2019. After a court hearing today, he was remanded to the Illinois Department of Corrections to serve his natural life sentence.

Be intentional with your time outside work DEAR DAVE, As a business owner, how do you find a life balance between work and home? I have my own small business, and sometimes I feel like I’m putting in too much time at the shop and not spending enough time with my husband and kids.

MOLLY DEAR MOLLY, The idea of everything being in balance, on an everyday basis, is a myth. It’s simply not possible to perfectly juggle every aspect of our lives every single day.

The key, I think, is to strive for an overall balance over time. You know first-hand the long hours and how work can interfere with other things if you’re not careful. The an-

swer lies in really being into whatever you’re doing.

When you’re not at your shop or taking care of work-related matters, actively participate in conversations with your spouse and kids—and listen. Spend time with them! Turn off your cell phone when you go on dates with your husband and when you take your kids on outings.

When you’re with your family you should really be with them.

Then, when you have to work, chances are they won’t be so upset,

and you’ll feel better about things, too!

He has a good part-time job, and my wife and I started teaching him basic money management at a young age. He understands the importance of saving, giving, and spending, plus he is setting aside money for technical school after he graduates from high school. Do you think it would be an appropriate real-world exercise if we started charging him a very small amount in rent each month to prepare him for life when he leaves home?

Barry DEAR BARRY, I appreciate the fact that you’re looking for teachable moments, but I really think charging a teenager rent while he’s living at home is going too far. Now, if he was 28 or 29, that’d be a different story. But as

parents, it’s still your responsibility to provide a home for your 17-yearold child.

It sounds like you’ve done a fantastic job already of helping your son grow into a responsible young man. He knows how to work, and he has grasped the basic concepts of managing money. I meet people three times his age on a regular basis who still haven’t done that. With this kind of start, I’ve got a feeling your kid will be fine.

I also think, with this kind of start, he has a great chance of becoming wealthy some day!
