Owners of Dempster & Waukegan Shopping Center Present Plans for New Lifestyle Center SMS_monument_edit600For over a decade, the 26-acre Prairie View Shopping Center at Dempster and Waukegan in Morton Grove has been a run-down eyesore.

The Village offered incentives to its long-time owners to redevelop the site to no avail.

Last year, the Village fined the owners $150,000 and told them to either sell the property or continue to pay large fines.

In September 2018, the owners sold the center to Kensington Development Partners and IM Properties who recognized that while the property was extremely broken, it had extreme potential.

Just six months later, on April 3, 2019, Kensington presented its plans to the Village’s Appearance Commission and on April 4, 2019 to the Traffic Safety Commission to transform the property into a vibrant lifestyle center that will thrive in the online shopping era. All the existing structures except for the Bank of America building will be demolished.

The new center will be renamed Sawmill Station, paying tribute to the water-powered sawmill erected in 1841 at Dempster Street and the Chicago River to supply wood for the railroad.

The plans presented for Sawmill Station feature a di-

verse array of dining and entertainment opportunities including Cooper’s Hawk Winery and Restaurant, Starbucks, Chipotle, Flix Brewhouse; a nine-theatre cinema with a brewery and restaurant, and an LA Fitness Signature Club. Retail stores will include Kohl’s, Ross, Dollar Tree and a grocery store. The owners are currently in negotiations with several grocers and hope to have a lease with a preferred grocer later this year. Sawmill Station will also include 250 luxury residential apartments overlooking the forest preserves. The synergy of the residential, retail, dining and entertainment venues will create a vibrant destination for Morton Grove and surrounding area.

2019 Municipal Election results overview April 2 election was largely a triumph for incumbents

It was largely a triumph of incumbents as the results of the April 2 municipal elections trickled in. While in some cases, it came down to who had the most votes, there were plenty of instances when they won simply because they ran unopposed.

This year, voters in the villages of Niles and Morton Grove got a chance to elect three out of six trustees on their respective village board, as well as some commissioners on their local park district boards and trustees on their library boards. In Park Ridge, four out of seven city council seats were at play, and so were half of the seats on the Park Ridge Park District Board of Trustees.

Unincorporated Maine Township residents got a chance to weigh in on Golf Maine Park District and the Niles Maine Library district elections. And, of course, voters throughout Maine and Niles townships got a chance to vote in their local school board elections.

While all of the races in question are non-partisan, it is common for candidates to join together in less formal slates – and this year was no exception.

NILES This year, two slates competed for three seats on the Niles village board. The Voice of Niles slate was made of incumbent Denise McCreery, former executive director of the Niles Chamber of Commerce and Industry, incumbent Dean Strzelecki, the former Niles police chief, and new can-

didate Craig Niedermaier. The Neighbors Party was made up of three new candidates – finance professional Apostolos ‘’Paul’’ Drakontaidis, Melic Bookstein, a data analytics manager for a pharmaceutical company, and retired Chicago Police officer Israel ‘’Izzy’’ Pacheco. The Voice of Niles slate won overwhelmingly, easily getting the three top spots.

Strzelecki was the biggest votegetting, earning 27.33 percent of the vote, while McCreery got 27.18 percent and Niedermaier got 24.51 percent. By contrast, all of the Neighbors Party slate members never got above either percent, with Drakontaidis getting 7.68 percent, Pacheco getting 6.91 percent and Bookstein getting the lowest percentage of them all – 6.4 percent.

Niles Park District, which serves most of Niles, saw seven candidates face off for two seats.

While only one of them – Patrick Byrne – was an incumbent. But the two candidates who got the most votes are hardly strangerst to the park district. Retiring Niles village trustee Joe LoVerde, who got 29.81 percent of the vote, was a long-time park district executive director before retiring in 2016. James Hynes, who got 19.08 percent, served on the park district board in 1997- 2010. Byrne got the second-lowest total in the race, getting 7.59 percent.

Public policy advocate Ashley Brummel and retired restaurant worker Frieda Holowicki, who ran together on the “Friends for Better Niles Parks” slate, got 11.51 percent and 11.69 percent, respectively. Out of the remaining candidate, Scott O’Brien, a department manager for an

The Golf-Maine Park District, which serves the remaining portion of Niles and parts of unincorporated Maine Township, saw three candidates running for two seats. Paula Kurtland, who works as an administrative assistant at the park district, won the 6-year seat by 70.79, beating out incumbent Ricardo Vaughan, who got 29.21 percent. Incumbent Mark Resnick won the 2-year seat by default.

Niles-Maine Library District, which serves Niles, most of unincorporated Maine Township and a small portion of unincorporated Northfield Township, saw three candidates fight for two spots on the library’s Board of Trustees.

None of them are strangers to the library. Karen Dimond and Carolyn Drblik both severed on the board for several terms, while Sue Wilsey was the library’s former communication director. While it was a closest content, the spots went to incumbents, with Drblik getting 36.69 percent of the vote, Dimond getting 36.49 percent and Wilsey getting 26.82 percent.

At the time Wilsey was a communication director, the later block was in the majority, but the 2015 election shifted the balance of power in the former block’s favor. The election results maintains the status quo –Drblik belong to the expense reducing block, while Dimond belongs to the investment-minded block.

MORTON GROVE For decades, the Action Party slate has been a dominant force in Morton Grove village politics. In 2017, three Action Party trustee candidates and the mayor faced independent opponents.

But this year, the Action Party fielded three incumbent trustees - Rita Minx, John Thill and Janine Witko – ran without opposition, winning by default. That lack of competition may explain why the turnout was paltry compared to other municipal legislative races – only 964 people bothered to vote for Morton Grove trustees.

The Morton Grove Park District race unfolded similarly. Board president Steven R. Schmidt and board vice president Paul Minx retained their seats by default. New candidate Erica Epperson won a two-year seat by default.

The third six-year seat will remain vacant due to the lack of candidates. Joanne Pelletier, who currently serves as the board secretary, won the four-year seat by default. PARK RIDGE This year, four Park Ridge City Council seats were up for grabs, but only 5th Ward seat had any competition. Incumbent Alderman Charles Melidosian, who was appointed to fill the seat left vacant after Ald. Daniel Knight passed away in December 2016.

This year marked the first time he was on the ballot, and he faced off against former Park Ridge alderman Salvatore Raspanti. Melidosian got 592 votes, of 61.6 percent of the vote, to Raspanti’s 369 votes, or 38.4%. It is worth noting that, according to the Cook County Board of elections, the ward has 7,313 registered voters.

In the other three wards, incumbent Ald. John Moran (1st), Ald. Gail Wilkeining (3rd) and Ald. Martin Joyce (7th) won by default.

At Park Ridge Park District found incumbent Cindy Grau and new candidates Mathew Coyne and Jennifer LaDuke running for three seats. Since two other candidates dropped out earlier this year, they all won by default.

Niles West’s Sam Galanopoulos headlines 2019 Voyager Media AllArea Girls Basketball Team

In the second half of the 2019 Voyager Media Prep Shootout AllStar game, Niles West senior Sam Galanopoulos took the game over, scoring 15 of her game-high 20 points, leading her team to the win and grabbing the game’s Most Valuable Player honors.

Galanopoulos finished four points shy of the record for the game, but that was not why she put on the performance she did. She subbed out of the game with four minutes left to play, knowing she was close to the mark.

Galanopoulos didn’t need an individual record — she needed a win.

Admitting as much after the game, the Central Suburban League South Player of the Year was not going to lose the final game of her career in her high school uniform.

That was how Galanopoulos played every game of her career that saw her put her name all over the Wolves’ record books that are headlined by WNBA star Jewell Loyd.

“That is how we are in my house,” Galanopoulos said. “My siblings and I will compete over a paper towel. So, I don’t care who I am playing or what is going on at the other side of the floor — I just focus on me and my teammates and ultimately what happens at the end of the game.”

While leading her team, Galanopoulos averaged 17.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.1 steals per game.

For her achievements, she is the 2018-19 Voyager Media Girls Basketball Player of the Year.

Even on a senior-dominated team this year, Galanopoulos led the way to a 19-win season.

“It was a mission. I would go home after games and feel like I’m dying, but that’s just in my blood.

With the great conference we play in, I had no choice but to play hard,” she said. “I couldn’t just no feel like playing one game and turn it on one game — I definitely had to play every game and I felt like they looked at me for leadership and jumped on.”

Galanopoulos was named to the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Class 4A All-State second team.

Overall, the Loyola Universitybound Galanopoulos is happy with how the career ended.

“I am happy with how we ended.

My first two years were kind of iffy because we had a lot of girls that didn’t play AAU and it was hard. I was a freshman and I didn’t want to be yelling and telling people what to do,” she said. “My sophomore year I just played more than verbalized and with the coaching switch junior and senior year, it was just use the experience. We ended the season with 10 seniors and we ended with a bang.”

She broke the 1,000-point mark during the season and finished with 1,064 points, good for eighth all-time in program history.

She ended her Hawk career as the program leader in made threepointers with 212.

She was an IBCA Class 4A special mention selection.

BROOKE SCHRAMEK, BENET ACADEMY Junior Wisconsin commit, Schramek was the top scorer for Benet Academy at the state tournament, averaging 15 points per game for the weekend. On the season, she averaged 10.2 points, 3.4 points and 1.5 assists per game.

TREASURE THOMPSON, BOLINGBROOK In her first season with the Raiders, Thompson nearly averaged a double-double, posting 13.1 points and 9.4 rebounds per game before going down to a knee injury in the sectional. She was a member of the IBCA Class 4A All-State third team.

SECOND TEAM KACHAE DONALD, PLAINFIELD CENTRAL Averaged 17.3 points, 2.3 rebounds, 2 assists and one steal per

game on the season for Central. She shot 33 percent on the year from behind the three-point arc.

NIAMH GARDINER, MAINE SOUTH Sophomore averaged 7.9 points per game to go along with 6.7 rebounds. She was named to the all-tournament teams at Dundee-Crown. Overall, she finished the season with more than 200 rebounds and was third on the team in scoring.

NICOLE GARDINER, MAINE SOUTH Sophomore tallied 8.6 points, 5.2 rebounds 2.0 assists and 1.7 steals per game. She was the leading scorer for the Hawks in conference play and was second in scoring over all behind Scales.

MADDIE GRECO, DOWNERS GROVE SOUTH Tallied 11.5 points on the season to go with three assists and five rebounds per game.

ELLIE GROSS, DOWNERS GROVE NORTH On the season, she averaged 10.1 points, 4 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game, while connecting on 43 three-point field goals.

JAYDEN MARABLE, BOLINGBROOK

Averaged 10.7 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists on the season against one of the area’s top schedules.

CLARA PRASSE, BENET ACADEMY The senior point guard was the floor leader for Benet, she was a IBCA Class 4A special mention selection averaging 5.9 points, 4.5 assists and 2.6 rebounds per game for the Final Four Redwings.

SHANNON SMITH, PLAINFIELD SOUTH Senior guard averaged 13.3 points, 2.5 steals, 1.8 assists and 3.4 steals for the Cougars.

JALYSA STOKES, JOLIET CENTRAL On the season she averaged 14.7 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.4 steams per game.

_ he question of whether to move or stay put depends on various factors.

Such factors may include emotional attachment to a home, the current economic climate and the cost of real estate. Current data points to a greater propensity for people to invest and improve upon their current properties rather than trading up for something new.

According to information collected by John Burns Real Estate Consulting, the percentage of homeowners moving up to their next home is the lowest in 25 years. Many are opting to make starter homes permanent by expanding them and repairing homes for the long haul.

The National Association of Realtors said that, between 1987 and 2008, home buyers stayed in their homes an average of six years before selling.

Since 2010, however, NAR says the average expected length of time people will stay in their homes before selling is

now 15 years.

Part of what’s fueling this permanency is that many home buyers were able to acquire rock-bottom mortgage interest rates shortly after the 2008 recession. As a result, they’re not inclined to walk away from those rates, even if doing so means getting more house. Also, a low inventory of available houses has stymied repeat buying for many people.

Those factors and others have led many homeowners to invest in renovations instead.
