Library opens Cubs vs. Sox exhibit Spring-long programs to highlight Chicago baseball culture

The Miles-Maine District Public Library kicked off its new “Sox vs Cubs: Chicago Civil War” exhibit with a baseball pitch, hot dogs, Crackerjacks and a large check.

The exhibit tracks the history of the two Chicago baseball teams, the way they were covered in the media and their fans. The exhibit had a “soft opening” in mid-February, but it was officially launched during the March 2 opening celebration. As Sasha Vasilic, the library’s Public Relations and Marketing Supervisor, explained to the Bugle, the library wanted to display something that would bring people together. And whether one roots for Cubs or Sox, he said, it was one of the few interests that most people throughout Chicago area share.

For the last three years, NilesMaine Library has been hosting

exhibits inside the Franklin Hall – the second-floor newspapers and magazines area - during the spring.

In 2016, it was an exhibit about the history of Chicago candy makers.

In 2017, it was an exhibit about the history of pizza. The exhibits are scheduled in spring because the library doesn’t usually have any other major programs running and, unlike in winter, the weather isn’t usually cold enough to keep patrons away.

As with the candy exhibit, the Sox vs. Cubs exhibit was created by the Elmhurst History Museum.

“They really provide such quality exhibits and memorabilia pieces,” Vasilic said.

The exhibit included detailed display boards, artifacts such as baseball bats and a tablet-based trivia game. The display boards included a map showing which parts of Chicago and its suburbs tend to favor which team and a detailed timeline of both teams’ his-

tories, complete with the changing names of their stadiums, the major players, historic uniform and logo designs, ownership changes and other major milestones.

This time around, the exhibit was sponsored by Lincolnwood branch of Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC). The branch was previously part of Chicago-based Private Bank, which the Torontobased CIBC acquired in 2017.

As it has been the case with other exhibits, the library is running Chicago baseball-themed events geared at different age groups.

Most notably, Southpaw, the White Sox mascot, visits the library on March 18 and Clark, the Chicago Cubs mascot, visits on May 6.

Vasilic said the library would be doing virtual reality demonstrations once a month.

“The exhibit] is going to give us

another angle,” he said. “You can pretend to be in the field, like a baseball player.”

Vasilic said that the library installed the exhibit around midFebruary. It held a grand opening on March 2 for library staff and officials, as well as officials from the Village of Niles, Niles Park District and East Maine School District 63.

It held a more public kick-off on March 4.

During the March 2 opening, guests could get hot dogs and treats courtesy of Richie V’s Hotdogs and Beef food truck and take pictures using the library green screen photo equipment.

The opening ceremony began with Brian Gawin, CIBC marketing director, presenting a $3,000 donation to Nimes-Maine Library Executive Director Susan Lempke.

“We thank you for letting us be a part of it, to allow us to support this fantastic exhibit, this great library,” he said. This partnership is an example of how we want to work and SEE BASEBALL PAGE 10

Murphy Lake zoning change proposed Zoning Commission charged to hold public hearing on amendment

Almost 20 years after the Park Ridge City Council first tried to do something to prevent property owners around Murphy Lake from building out into the lake itself, the aldermen are giving it another try.

During the Feb. 26 Procedures and Regulations Committee of the Whole voted 4-3 to send a zoning text amendment to the Park Ridge Planning and Zoning Commission.

The amendment would require the city Zoning Administrator to review permits for any work that would affect the lake share to see if it would have “unreasonable impact” on the lake. The commission will hold a public hearing on the amendment and make a recommendation as to whether it should be approved. The city council can then either concur with the recommendation or override it – but the override would require the support of at least six out

of seven aldermen.

Both supporters and opponents spoke during the Feb. 26 meeting.

The committee was divided as well, with opponents arguing that the city shouldn’t get involved in something that would affect a relatively small portion of the population and potentially expose Park Ridge to lawsuits, while proponents argued that Murphy Lake was a unique city asset that should be protected, and that the risk of the lawsuit was a factor any time the city makes any kind of zoning decision. Ald. Nicholas Milissis (2nd) said that while he opposed the amendment, he was voting to send it to Planning and Zoning because he believed that it deserved to at least get a hearing.

Murphy Lake is an artificial lake built from a gravel pit in the late 1950s, in what was then an unincorporated portion of Maine Township. While in most cases – including in the nearby Park Lake development – the property lines for the surrounding houses don’t

extend too far into the lake itself.

But Murphy Lake property lines extend a few dozen feet into the water.

So when the property owners want to infill the underwater portion of their lot, they can potentially expand far into the lake.

In 1998, Murphy Lake Improvement Association asked Park Ridge to approve an ordinance that would make its restrictions against filling in the lake official on the city level.

The city council wound up passing a resolution instructing the Park Ridge Director of Public Works to refuse to issue any permit for that kind of construction. But when, in 2016, Murphy Lake homeowner Oscar Marquis asked the city to enforce the resolution, city attorneys advised the staff that a resolution can’t actually affect grading regula-

tions – only an ordinance can.

When the improvement association asked the city council to create an ordinance, the aldermen wound up suggesting that the association try to resolve the issue by themselves before the city steps in. After that failed, the aldermen instructed the city staff to come up with an ordinance that would create a zoning change to make it enforceable.

Jim Brown, the Park Ridge Community Preservation and Development Director, told the aldermen that the ordinance was designed to be clear-cut and not too restrictive.

“We wanted to draft the language that clearly indicated that some activities such as erosion control and sand infill on the beach wouldn’t be prohibited,” he said. “[And] we wanted a language that would not

be overly vague and it would be simple for staff to interpret.”

Both he and city attorney Adam Simon indicated in the past that they opposed the ordinance – something they reiterated during the Feb. 26 meeting.

In response to questions from Park Ridge Mayor Marty Maloney, Simon said that, if any of the property owners were to challenge the ordinance after it’s adopted, they would most likely do it by applying for a permit and suing once the permit is rejected. However, he did not rule out property owners challenging the ordinance itself – it would be harder to make the case, Simon explained, but not impossible.

The attorney also told the aldermen that, if the ordinance isn’t adopted and one of the homeowners does the infill, MLIA and nearby property owners specifically would have grounds to sue. Lincoln pivotal in securing Springfield as state capital

But that wasn’t always the case.

Springfield became the state’s third capital city in 1839. And the story of how Springfield became the capital is a tall tale … well, it’s a tale with an outcome scripted by nine tall men.

Illinois has been governed from three cities and six buildings (one that was rented and five that were owned by the state), as told in an article in the 1975-76 edition of the legislative Illinois Blue Book. Kaskaskia was the first state capital after Illinois was admitted to the union in 1818, with the 29 House members and 14 senators in the first General Assembly of Illinois working in a rented two-story brick building at a cost of $4 per day.

Yet by December 1820, the second General Assembly was meeting in a new building in a new capital city, Vandalia, which was a more central location within the state’s original 16 southern counties. Lawmakers agreed Vandalia would remain the capital city for at least the next 20 years.

But it didn’t take long for many Illinois lawmakers - including a young state legislator who would go on to become the nation’s 16th president - to cite location as they began petitioning for the capital to be moved again. The argument this time for relocating was that the capital should be closer to the geographical center of the state.

In 1833 the General Assembly decided to ask voters, via the next general election, to weigh in on where the capital should be, according to the Blue Book history. Vandalia, Jacksonville, Springfield, Peoria, Alton and the state’s actual geographical center were the options. Although Alton emerged with a slim majority, the results were ruled inconclusive.

The idea of moving the capital continued to percolate, with talk put into action during the 1836-37 legislative session when Abraham Lincoln intro-

duced legislation that would move the capital to Springfield. He had the backing of eight legislative colleagues of the Whig Party who were called the Long Nine, as their aggregate height was 54 feet, according to the history provided in the 1975-76 Blue Book.

An opponent to Springfield as the new location was a legislative foe Lincoln knew well; Stephen A. Douglas, who also was serving in the General Assembly and wanted Jacksonville to be the state capital. And the people of Vandalia weren’t about to give up easily: They built a new brick statehouse in an attempt to keep the legislature where it was.

That effort was for naught, as after four balloting attempts Springfield received the majority of votes needed to move the state capital. There have been allegations over the years that the Long Nine traded favors in order for Springfield to emerge triumphant, although Sen. Paul Simon in his book “Lincoln’s Preparation for Greatness” disputed that notion. Regardless of how the decision came to pass, state government began operating in Springfield by the end of 1839.

Work began in 1837 on a new Capitol building on the Springfield Town Square, with the first Capitol building providing room for the state House and Senate, the governor and other elected officials, as well as housing the Illinois Supreme Court, according to the book “A. Lincoln: His Illinois,” published by The State Journal-Register in 2008.

As the state’s population grew, so too

did its government, and within a few decades a bigger building was needed to accommodate the elected officials.

Construction began on the current Capitol building in 1868 and was finished in 1888, although lawmakers moved in about halfway through the construction process. The first building, now known as the Old State Capitol, remains and is often used for reenactments, performances, rallies and political speeches.

As the state’s capital, Springfield has witnessed some of the most important political moments in Illinois history. It’s where Lincoln gave his “House Divided” speech, in which he condemned slavery. Almost 150 years later, it’s where Barack Obama announced in 2007 he was running for president of the United States.

Of course, it’s also where four governors who later went to prison on various charges served as chief executive of the state. And as long as Springfield remains Illinois’ capital city, it will continue to be where some of the most politically important decisions about Illinois are made.

Ald. John Moran (1st) asked Brown if the ordinance would make it easier to deny permits for work that would go too deeply into the lake. The director responded that it would “certainly make it much easier.”

Ald. Marc Mazzuca (6th) said that he remained skeptical that the ordinance was needed at all, saying that the property owners could handle the issues on their own without dragging the city into the lawsuit.

Moran responded that, as he saw it, any attempt to enforce any zoning regulation at all can lead to a lawsuit.

that he supported it. The city already tried to do something to protect the lake, he argued, and it was only fair that the city tries to do something to resolve the issue.

Resident Steve Huening, who served as alderman from 1995-2003 said that he and some of his colleagues wanted to resolve the situation because, between the size of the lots and the shallowness of the lake, any major change to it could potentially affect the entire body of water.

“It is the aggregate water volume that makes [lakes like Murphy Lake] viable and unavailable,” he said. “As beautiful in these lakes are, they’re fragile lakes. If [homeowners] are allowed to fill them in, they can have substantial impact of the lake.”

A number of Murphy Lake residents attended the meeting. While some, like Marquis, spoke in favor, the meeting also saw attorney Sh-

antelle Bill address the committee on the behalf of resident Donald Schumacher. As she explained, her client didn’t want to do anything to damage the lake – but he objected to the city government regulating what he could do with his property.

She also said that Schumacher expressed concern about having to get the city permission for every little change.

If the city approves the ordinance, Bill said, her client would considering legal action.

Moran responded that, while he trusted that her client meant what he said, the city had to think about what happens when the property passes on to somebody In the end, the aldermen voted 4-3 to send the ordinance to Planning & Zoning, with Mazzuca, Ald. SEASON No. 5 Maine South falls to No. 4 Loyola in the IHSA Class 4A Maine South Regional final

Last Friday was another rough week for Maine South as the No. 5 boys’ basketball team failed to capture the IHSA regionals title, falling to No. 4 Loyola 48-29 at Spector gym.

“We didn’t execute the way we wanted to,” junior guard Fillip Bulatovic said. “Our shots weren’t following through, but that’s on us. And we should’ve played better offensively and focused more on rebounding.”

Bulatovic and senior forward Grant Miller both tallied a team high nine points against Loyola.

Maine South coach Tony Lavorato created some fireworks in the game and was issued a technical foul.

“I made a coaching decision to ask for a technical foul,” Lavorato said. “I have so much respect for the officials, but I told the referees to give me a technical and that’s what I got.”

To reach the title game, Maine South defeated Niles West Tuesday 61-42.

Junior guard Essam Hamwi scored 23 points to help send the Hawks to the regional title game.

The Hawks finished the season with an illustrious 22-8 record. Maine South had made

some improvement since they fell short against Deerfield in last year’s regional semifinals showdown 47-37.

Lavorato was thankful and fortunate to coach the seniors that have contributed throughout their entire season.

Beside Miller, fellow star forwards Tommy Gardiner and Lucas D’Alesio and point guard including point guard Michael George have been the blue collar work horses for Maine South.

“Three out of those four guys were with me for three years,” Lavorato said. “Those four guys are better individuals than they are as players, but they’re still great players. We’re also a home grown program, and most of my players have been with me since they were in fourth grade. So everybody on our team has been a fourth grade basketball Hawk camper in the past.”

Despite the departure of his leading seniors, Lavorato has another talented group that he believes can take his team to a higher level.

Hamwi and Bulatovic are not the only junior prolific scorers for the Hawks; Danny Crane is also another young prospect who’s trying to make a name for himself.

Gardner, McTague earn postseason honors Oakton Community College freshman guard Ava Gardner (Park Ridge, Maine South High School) was named to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region IV Division II District D All-Region Team as well as the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) All-Conference First Team.

Gardner led the Owls in points (14.7), assists (2.4) and steals (2.0) per game. She also averaged 5.8 rebounds per contest on the season.

“We are excited about Ava’s accomplishments as a freshman

and for her potential with the Owls next season,” says Head Coach Melissa Rauschenberg.

“She has pure talent and athleticism on both ends of the floor with her solid defense, smooth left-handed shot and her ability to drive to the basket. We enjoyed watching Ava this year and look forward to her continued growth.”

In addition, center Maddie McTague (Des Plaines, Maine East High School) earned a spot on the ISCC Second Team.

The sophomore averaged 10.5 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.2 blocks during the season.

“Maddie has grown so much as an athlete and leader in the last two years,” Rauschenberg adds. “She overcame many adversities and injuries to be one of our strongest players. We will miss Maddie and wish her good luck as she pursues her dream of becoming a police officer.”

MEN’S BASKETBALL Three Oakton Community College men’s basketball freshmen received postseason honors, highlighted by Jordan Irving (Morton Grove, Maine East High School) being named to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region IV Division II District 4 All-Region Second Team.

Irving, a guard, led the Owls in scoring with 16.9 points per game after leading his high school in scoring during his junior and senior years. He also averaged 2.7 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game in 2017-18.

“Jordan has excelled in a variety of skill sets this season at the request of the coaching staff,” Head Coach Mick Reuter says.

“Throughout the season, he proved his ability to facilitate on the offensive end and execute defensively. He just continued to improve all season.”

Two forwards also received recognition from the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference. Darius Jones (Glenview, Glenbrook South High School) earned first-team honors while Jaelin Ferrell, who hails from Louisville, Kentucky, captured a spot on the second team.

The 6-3 Jones led the Owls in rebounds (9.4) and blocks (1.4) per game, while contributing 12.5 points per contest. Meanwhile, Ferrell delivered 15.9 points and 4.1 rebounds per game.

“Darius is a versatile player whose ability to read the game grew as the season progressed,” Reuter explains. “His ability to impact the game on both ends of the court improved dramati-

The Owls finished the regular season with a 10-20 record and with Irving, Jones and Ferrell all slated to return next season, Reuter is already optimistic about the 2018-19 campaign.

“We are excited for their continued growth in the future and can’t wait to see how they elevate our team next season,” Reuter adds.

The Oakton Community College baseball team is ready to ‘return to conquer’ after coming off a 2017 season that saw the Owls struggle with injuries and tough losses en route to a 25-28 season.

Head coach Bill Fratto (428229), now in his 13th season, has built a winning tradition at Oakton and says he is ready to put the anomaly of a losing season behind him: “We want to regain our swagger this year, and with the experience of 15 sophomores, we have the ability to compete for a Region IV championship and head far in the playoffs.”

Sophomore outfielder Tom Corlett (Park Ridge, Maine South High School) likes the way the Owls are shaping up for the season.

“We have a lot of depth, and we have a very strong team,” Corlett says. “We’re going to be very tough to play against this year.”

Fratto says that returning infielders Chris Broocolino (Schaumburg, Doral Academy), who batted .318; Sawyer Price (Colorado Springs, Colorado, Air Academy), who compiled a .306 batting average; and Lucas Karz (Mount Prospect, Prospect High School), who registered a .287 batting average, are expected to lead the way offensively.

Heinlein (Chicago, St. Patrick High School), infielder Jeff Mustari (Des Plaines, Maine West High School), catcher Victor Pimentel (Calvary Christian Academy, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida), outfielder Marco Romero (Caracas, Venezuela), catcher Jack Splett (Wheeling, Wheeling High School), first baseman Dan Sullivan and infielder/outfielder Jose Vera are each expected to make an impact at the plate.

On the mound, the Owls return three key starters from last season who combined for 13 wins: Alex Crinigan (Hampshire, Hampshire High School), Russell Langan (Park Ridge, Maine South High School) and Chase Pearce (Kokomo, Indiana, Kokomo High School). Freshmen Tommy Gertner (Northbrook, Glenbrook North High School), Luis Savigne (Hollander, Florida, West Park High School) and Joe Sullivan (Mundelein, Mundelein High School) will compete for the last two spots in the rotation. Sophomores Bailey Egan (Chicago, Mount Carmel High School) and Kyle MacRae (Northbrook, Glenbrook North High School) will play vital roles out of the bullpen.

“We have good depth in our pitching staff and it will be important to see who emerges as the season continues,” Fratto says. “We will go as far as our pitching staff takes us and our bullpen will play a huge role in our team’s overall success.”

The Owls open the season with two games against Century College at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis Monday, March 5, before embarking on a 10-game spring trip to Florida March 1017. Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference play begins at 2:30 p.m. Friday, March 23, at Elgin Community College.

“I can’t wait to see how this team unfolds, as the players have worked extremely hard to prepare for the season,” Fratto says.

“We just need to be focused on playing consistent baseball and get back to winning 40 games.”

“We preserve the past, but we also focus on the future,” she said.

“The teams and their fans exist both in the past and the future.”

Karen Dimond, the current president of the Niles-Maine Library Board of Trustees, remembered growing up in rural Illinois and watching Cubs games on WGN. And, “every once in a while, “ she and her family drove to Chicago for a day to watch Cubs games at Wrigley Field.

“It really drew me to the city, it

really made me [feel like] a place I wanted to go back to,” she said.

“I hope this exhibit will also draw people to the Niles library. I think the exhibit and programs are going to draw more residents to the NilesMaine library, and they’re going to see all the other things and resources we have to offer.”

Niles Mayor Andrew Przybylo praised the library for bringing the exhibit to the village.

“It makes it so much easier to build community,” he said.

After that, the officials gathered to cut the ribbon to officially open the exhibit. And, in keeping with the exhibit theme, Lempke and Przybylo threw baseballs.
