VILLAGE OF NILES

Trustee candidates square off at forum On March 20, candidates for village trustee sparred over their competing visions for the future of Niles BY JEN SHEA For the Bugle @BugleNewspapers sweditor@buglenewspapers.com

Rivals traded fighting words at a candidates’ forum at the Niles Senior Center last week. On March 20, candidates for village trustee sparred over their competing visions for the future of Niles. Candidates from the Neighbors Party slate, which is aligned with Mayor Andrew Przybylo, accused their opponents of being obstructionists. For their part, the Voice of Niles Party candidates reminded voters that they have accused the Neighbors Party of petition fraud for forging a circulator’s signature, among other things. Two of the Neighbors Party candidates were absent from the forum. But Melic R. Bookstein and Apostolos “Paul” Drakontaidis sent statements which were read aloud at the event. “The current board has done nothing of note since it was elected,” Bookstein said. “It’s time for new trustees rather than more of the same.” Drakontaidis said he “hasn’t seen a single positive thing from the current board of trustees.”

ROSES FROM PAGE 2 Safety Excellence Award for his commendable work in District 63 schools. As a member of the Niles Police Department, Officer Hernandez is recognized for his ability to inspire youth to be positive and safe in our community. District their families and Officer Hernandez’ co-workers alike appreciate the impact he has on students. Kathryn Sjoholm, a teacher at Gemini describes how Officer Hernandez appreciates that he is influencing students’ awareness of social awareness and social justice.

The Voice of Niles Party candidates offered a heated response. “Two individuals who could not be here tonight immediately started by saying that we are obstructionists,” trustee Denise McCreery said. “With every vote I cast, I thoroughly research the issue... Collectively, we are addressing those issues.” Candidate Craig Niedermaier brought up the petition fraud allegations, and spoke about a “code of conduct.” “We have a humble town here,” he said. “This is not a job you take to get rich.” Trustee Dean Strzelecki suggested that their independence from the mayor is a point in their favor. “I really want to remain a trustee because I believe the residents of Niles deserve an independent village board,” he said. The mayor came up again during a question about term limits. The candidates were asked about Przybylo’s recent declaration that he won’t seek an extra term beyond the two he’s already served. “I guess we’ll find out in two years, if he will or if he won’t,” McCreery said. “I am in complete support of term limits.” Neighbors Party candidate Israel “Izzy” Pacheco said he did not dispute the results of a 2013 referendum in which 82 percent of voters supported term limits. “If the residents of Niles, that is what they want, we should honor that,” he said. The Neighbors Party has said it

will not push for a referendum to toss out term limits so the mayor can seek a third term. Beyond the term limits issue, candidates fielded questions on a wide variety of subjects, from TIF districts to gun safety to minimum wage. The Neighbors Party consistently criticized the current village board. The Voice of Niles Party defended it, and occasionally criticized the mayor. The forum also featured a debate among the candidates for Park District Board of Commissioners. Trustee Joe LoVerde, Jim Hynes, Scott O’Brien and Ashley Brummel showed up for the debate. Freida Holowicki was not present. The candidates mostly agreed on the state of the Park District’s finances, and the value of the $38 million debt it took out. “The Park District was restored, revitalized and reenergized all by keeping taxes down,” LoVerde said. Where they differed was on the advantage of youth versus experience. O’Brien and Brummel emphasized the former, while LoVerde and Hynes stressed the latter. “I have a young spin on things,” O’Brien said. “And I’m here for the long haul.” Hynes and LoVerde said they wanted to run to keep the Park District free from political interference. “This election is about the future of Niles and its very successful Park District,” LoVerde said. “Remember, experience matters,” Hynes said.

Maine South’s Sam Galanopoulos headlines 2019 Voyager Media AllArea Girls Basketball Team BY MARK GREGORY Editorial Director @Hear_The_Beard mark@buglenewspapers.com

In the second half of the 2019 Voyager Media Prep Shootout All-Star game, Niles West senior Sam Galanopoulos took the game over, scoring 15 of her game-high 20 points, leading her team to the win and grabbing the game’s Most Valuable Player honors. Galanopoulos finished four points shy of the record for the game, but that was not why she put on the performance she did. She subbed out of the game with four minutes left to play, knowing she was close to the mark. Galanopoulos didn’t need an individual record — she needed a win. Admitting as much after the game, the Central Suburban League South Player of the Year was not going to lose the final game of her career in her high school uniform. That was how Galanopoulos

played every game of her career that saw her put her name all over the Wolves’ record books that are headlined by WNBA star Jewell Loyd. “That is how we are in my house,” Galanopoulos said. “My siblings and I will compete over a paper towel. So, I don’t care who I am playing or what is going on at the other side of the floor — I just focus on me and my teammates and ultimately what happens at the end of the game.” While leading her team, Galanopoulos averaged 17.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.1 steals per game. For her achievements, she is the 2018-19 Voyager Media Girls Basketball Player of the Year. Even on a senior-dominated team this year, Galanopoulos led the way to a 19-win season. “It was a mission. I would go home after games and feel like I’m dying, but that’s just in my blood. SEE ALL-AREA PAGE 6

ASSOCIA-

Debt consolidation just moves money around DEAR DAVE, I’ve heard you tell people to avoid debt consolidation companies. Why do you think debt consolidation is such a bad thing? TOM DEAR TOM, The main reason is that debt consolidation makes you feel like you did something to really change your financial world when you didn’t. That’s part of the catch. Believe it or not, I hear people all the time say things like, “I took out a loan and paid off all my debt!” No, you didn’t. All you did was move your debt around. It’s still there! In cases like this, the biggest issue remains because you didn’t do anything to address the real prob-

lems — you and your behavior. When you have debt, the number of payments you have left isn’t the problem. The problem isn’t interest rates, either. The problem is the person you look at in the mirror every day. Until you get mad enough about your financial situation and the real reasons for it — until you fix you and your behavior — you’ll never make any progress toward winning with money! —DAVE DEAR DAVE, My husband and I are following

your plan, and we’re in the middle of saving up our emergency fund. When do you recommend buying a new car in the process? Do we have to wait until we’ve finished all the Baby Steps? ALANNA DEAR ALANNA, I never advise buying a brand new car, unless you have a net worth of at least $1 million. At that point, you’ve got enough assets that you won’t get rocked by the ridiculous depreciation that comes with buying a new vehicle. Now, you don’t have to drive a beater until you pay off your house or anything like that. I advise people to drive the minimum they can in terms of a car until they complete my first three steps. Baby Step 1 is a beginner emergency fund of $1,000. Baby Step 2 is paying off all debt except for your home. Baby Step 3 is fully funding your emergency fund with three to six months of expenses.

Niles Citizen of the Year: Raymond and Roxanne Weinberg, local residents, nominated by Denise McCreery (neighbor) When you think of a good neighbor, Raymond and Roxanne Weinberg come to mind! The couple are long-time residents of Niles and for decades are recognized for serving the community by showcasing Niles in the best possible way. Alicia Bermes, Executive Director of the Chamber describes the Weinbergs as “all around fabulous volunteers!”. It seems at every Holiday we celebrate, the Weinbergs help make it special, whether opening their home and serving

breakfast on the 4th of July because they live at the end of the parade route, decorating to entertain on Halloween or helping friends cater for St. Patrick’s Day. When asked why Roxanne does what she does, she answered “I love Niles. We are just people wanting to give back to the town we love!” The Niles Chamber of Commerce is honored to celebrate all of the award winners at our annual Niles Night of Roses.
