Niles voters reject referendum to restore mayor’s appointment power Advisory referenda on funding services, Leaning Tower repairs approved

Niles residents voted down a referendum that would have reversed a November 2014 ballot question and restored the mayor’s ability to fill trustee vacancies.

For much of the village’s history, Niles mayors had the power to nominate appointees to fill trustee

vacancies, with the village board giving final approval. In 2014, local activist Joe Makula submitted a referendum that would require all vacancies to be filled by voters during the nearest municipal election.

Mayor Andrew Przybylo argued that this could potentially put the village in a dangerous position, since some votes require a quorum – which would be be impossible to achieve if the board had three

or more vacancies at once. As attorneys from the Ancel Glick law firm explained at the time, this includes votes dealing with emergency disaster relief, lease of equipment and machinery, rejection of interest arbitration decisions in village union contracts, issuing bonds for water and sewer repairs, and transferring funds between village departments.

However, voters weren’t swayed by that argument.

Last November, the village board placed a referendum that would reverse the 2014 ballot initiative.

Although Niles voters approved

Makula’s original referendum by a sizable 76 percent margin, they didn’t reject the new referendum quite as readily. Of the 7,148 ballots cast, 58.36 percent, or 3,712, were opposed to restoring the mayoral appointment power, while 41.64 percent, or 2,648, supported the referendum.

However, Niles voters did approve two advisory referenda.

A question asking whether the village should maintain funding for the Niles Department of Family Services, Niles Senior Center, Niles Fitness Center and Niles Teen Center received support from 88.03

percent of voters.

Residents also appeared to be in favor of Leaning Tower of Niles repairs, with 63.09 percent voting in favor of the referendum.

Przybylo told the Bugle that he feels good about the outcome of the referendum, saying that he was pleased that the advisory referenda passed by decent margins. As for the trustee vacancy referenda, he said he was pleased by how many people voted in favor of restoring his power to appoint nominees.

The fact that it only lost by 1,100 [votes] is a good sign,” said Przybylo, adding that the people who wanted the referendum to fail paid for two robo calls and mailings. “ I didn’t do anything except for mention in it the village newsletter.”

Although Przybylo and his political action committee didn’t campaign for this referendum to the same extent as they did against Makula’s in 2014, the mayor did speak in favor of restoring his appointment power on numerous occasions and submitted letters to local newspapers.

The race for the Democratic Party nomination for the Cook County State’s Attorney saw a sea change, as former assistant state’s attorney Kim Foxx beat incumbent Anita Alvarez and fellow challenger Donna More by a sizeable margin.

While it became clear early on that Foxx would win in the city of Chicago, the suburban vote also went in her favor. She received 52.21 percent, or 226,736 ballots, of the suburban cook county vote, while Alvarez received only 33.08 percent of the vote. Less than 15 percent of voters backed More.

Foxx will now face off against prosecutor Christopher E.K. Pfannkuche, the Republican candidate for state’s attorney who ran unopposed in his party’s primary.

The upcoming U.S. Senate race will be a contest between Republican incumbent Mark Kirk and U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth, who represents Illinois’ Eighth Congressional District. Kirk easily won his party’s nomination.

“To those people who understood it, who voted for it – I just wanted to say that everything is going to be fine,” he said. “I don’t expect three vacancies [at once] ever. I don’t want everyone to worry, it’s going to be fine.”

Former village trustee Rosemary Palicki, who had previously spoken out against the trustee vacancy referendum, told the Bugle that she was happy with the results.

By contrast, local primary races for the U.S. House of Representative were merely formalities that paved the way for general election.

Both Democratic incumbent Jan Schakowsky and her Republican challenger Joan McCarthy Lasonde ran unopposed in their respective parties’ primaries.

In her official statement, Lasonde positioned herself as someone who is better equipped to address what she described as pressing issues

facing the district.

“I look forward to a high-energy campaign in which I will advance a constructive agenda addressing issues like unemployment and underemployment, the new set of problems in health care caused

by Obamacare, national security, our relationship with allies like Israel, and solutions to change the status quo in education which has particularly failed minority and low-income students for generations,” she said.

While most of the Illinois General Assembly primaries were

uncontested, the Democratic primary race for the Illinois House of Representative’s 15th District saw incumbent John C. D’Amico face off against challenger Jac Charlier. D’Amico secured the Democratic nomination by a large margin, receiving 68.35 percent of the vote, compared with Charlier’s 31.65 percent.

D’Amico now faces Republican candidate Jonathan Edelman, who ran unopposed for his party’s nomination.

In an official statement, Edelman said he’ll run a clean campaign.

“I recently spoke with Rep. D’Amico, and we agreed that we can debate issues and refrain from personal attacks,” he said. “I am eager for a voter-centric campaign that rejects mud-slinging and respects the voters’ intelligence.”

He also reached out to Charlier’s supporters.

“Jac and I both spent the primary season arguing for good governance, fiscal accountability and democratic involvement,” Edelman said in an official statement. “It’s not a partisan issue – or at least it shouldn’t be.”

At the same time, Palicki said she wasn’t prepared to dismiss concerns about the consequences of having too many trustee vacancies. However, she said she just wasn’t convinced that restoring the mayor’s power to fill them was the best way to resolve the issue.

“I think the current board and the mayor need to look very carefully and have a discussion on how serious the danger [the mayor] talked about is,” she said.

“I think there needs to be an open discussion to see if we really do need to make changes to [the current procedures].”

If there is one thing the results shows, she said, it’s that residents have no appetite for returning to pre-2014 procedures.

“I don’t want to see it come back in another initiative,” said Palicki. “I think citizens have spoke, twice.”

Palicki said that the board and residents need to talk about possible alternatives that would allow the village to fill trustee vacancies quicker than the current procedure allows, without restoring the mayor’s vacancyfilling powers.

Over the past three years, Palicki repeatedly expressed reservations about the village spending money on the Leaning Tower, as

well. She said the results of the advisory referendum shows that Niles residents are divided on the issue, and they should be taken as a sign that the “vision” for the Touhy Triangle may need to be reconsidered.

“I think there’s more discussion that needs to be done about what we should do [with the site],” said Palicki. “I think we need to strive to do what Niles does best, and not try to copy what other villages do.”

The majority of the voters who spoke to the Bugle said that they were against the trustee vacancy referendum.

“I think our vote should be counted,” said Jeff Gabill. “I think

we should have a say-so in who gets selected.”

Resident Ogden Wezio said he voted against the referendum.

“There’s nothing wrong with the way things are now,” he said. “I don’t think appointing [trustees] will be a good way to go, because it would machine politics, like in Chicago.”

Resident Mike Jones expressed similar sentiments.

“I think [trustees] should be elected by the people,” he said.

“Some people in politics just have too much power, and they pick from their own little clubs – and people aren’t represented. So I’m against mayors making appointments.”

3 juveniles charged in string of auto thefts Incidents occurred between Feb. 21 and March 7 Bugle Staff Park Ridge police have arrested three juveniles in connection to a string of motor vehicle thefts that occurred between Feb. 21 and March 7.

The Park Ridge Police Department announced last week that charges ranging from possession of stolen motor vehicle to fleeing police have been filed against three 14-year-olds from Park Ridge and Buffalo Grove.

The following items were compiled from the official reports of the Niles, Park Ridge and Morton Grove police departments. Appearing in the police blotter does not constitute a finding of guilt, only a court of law can make that determination.

Niles Rosalia Vasquez, 43, 400 block of Clayton Avenue, Hillside, was arrested at 6:18 p.m. March 10 at Golf Mill Shopping Center for retail theft.

Guillermina Arroyo, 53, 8500 block of Lilibet Terrace, Morton Grove, was arrested at 2 p.m. March 12 at Golf Mill Shopping Center for retail theft.

Shainna M. Grant, 30, 4800 block of 28th Court, Cicero, was arrested at 6:01 p.m. March 14 in the 8800 block of Milwaukee for suspended license.

Kathleen K. Dagley, 36, 8700 block of Stolting, Niles, was arrested at 10:39 p.m. March 15 in the 8700 block of Stolting for domestic battery and false report of offense.

Park Ridge Jacob G. Campbell, 18, 311 Vine Ave., was arrested at 9:41 p.m. March 4 in the 300 block of Vine for two counts of domestic battery.

Three of the vehicles taken were running at the time, and the fourth vehicle had the keys left in the ignition, according to police.

“It is important to note that all of these crimes were crimes of opportunity,” Deputy Chief Lou Jogmen said in a March 16 release.

“Please lock your vehicles each time you park it and never leave the keys inside.”

The first reported theft occurred Feb. 21 in the 100 block of Euclid Avenue. Police said one of the

suspects, who is identified as Juvenile A, stole a 2012 Honda that was left unattended with its engine running. Suspect A is alleged to have also stolen a 2001 Chevy on Feb. 26 from the 1500 block of Stewart and a 1996 Volvo on March 1 from the 0-100 block of South Prospect Avenue.

Juvenile A, who is a resident of Park Ridge, was arrested March 6 after being reported missing by his parents and located by police.

He was charged with three counts of possession of stolen motor vehicle, one count of possession of cannabis and fleeing from police.

Chae S. Okeefe, 64, 743 Busse Highway, Park Ridge, was arrested at 11:42 a.m. March 6 in the 1800 block of North Greenwood for no insurance, suspended or revoked driver’s license, and using electronic communication while driving.

A second suspect, identified as Juvenile B by police, was arrested March 7 after a resident in the 200 block of Ashland observed him and a third suspect attempting to burglarize a vehicle. Officers responded and were able to take Juvenile B into custody as he attempted to flee the scene.

Police said Juvenile B and Juvenile C had attempted to steal and burglarized a vehicle in the 700 block of North Prospect prior to the burglary on Ashland.

After interviewing Juvenile B, he was charged with two counts of burglary to motor vehicle and

fleeing from police. Juvenile B is a resident of Buffalo Grove and has pending possession of stolen motor vehicle charges in that village.

Juvenile C was arrested March 8 after being interviewed by detectives. He was charged with one count of possession of stolen motor vehicle, two counts of burglary to motor vehicle and fleeing from police, after he was observed in one of the stolen motor vehicles on March 5.

Police said all three juveniles have been petitioned to juvenile court.

“as a former maP recipient,... my patience with springfield and the politicians we’ve sent there has worn thin.”

Another avalanche of statements from Illinois legislators and Gov. Rauner were sent out last week – each assigning blame for the state budget standoff to the other side and ridding themselves of responsibility for a financial fiasco that’s receiving national ridicule.

The issue prompting this wave of rhetoric was the passage of Senate Bill 2059 – an appropriations bill that would authorize payments for mental health and social services, as well as higher education, during the ongoing budget B.S. Senate Democrats say the bill, which appropriates up to $3.9 billion for social services and higher education spending, was inspired by recent testimony from Illinois Comptroller Leslie Munger during a hearing of the Senate Appropriations Committee.

Prior to this, the Republican governor and Democratic legislators waged a similar war of words over a failed attempt earlier this month to override Rauner’s veto of SB 2043, which would fund MAP grants for the 2015-16 academic year and include money for community colleges and career-technical and adult education.

“We applaud House Republicans and Representative Drury for standing up for taxpayers today,” Rauner’s press secretary, Catherine Kelly, said in a statement following the failed override attempt. “Despite the governor’s request that the General Assembly not waste time with a political vote that was never going to pass, the legislature is poised to leave students, universities and community colleges in the lurch for at least a month.”

Fast forward a couple weeks, and State Sen. Pat McGuire was one member of the general assembly who kicked off the next round of political press releases, after the Senate approved SB 2059.

The Will County Democrat said the bill allows Rauner to fund programs and services not covered by the court orders and consent decrees that are propelling 90 percent of state spending.

“It supports the drug, mental health and veterans courts, which are more effective than imprisonment,” McGuire said. “And it signals to students awaiting MAP grants that the state plans to honor its obligation to them.”

This lack of funding for the Monetary Award Program was the focus of Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant’s statement on SB 2059, as well. The Shorewood

senator said the vote gives the governor the authority to authorize funds for MAP grants, community colleges and Illinois’ nine public universities.

“Though I am frustrated that the governor has been unwilling to fund higher education, I intend to continue supporting legislation that gives him an opportunity to honor the state’s commitment to students needing aid for college and demonstrate that higher education is a priority,” Bertino-Tarrant said.

The impact on higher education is particularly important, as MAP provides close to $5,000 in financial aid for about 150,000 low-income students each year. Many MAP recipients depend on the grant to reduce the financial burden of attending college, and all 57 of the state’s community colleges and public universities are equally affected by the program’s lack of funding.

Meanwhile, Rauner and his allies in the state legislature called SB 2059 nothing more than a way for Democrats to save face, adding that it wouldn’t fund the programs it identifies without adding to the state’s debt.

“Senate Democrats today admitted that this bill would do nothing to help higher education, MAP students or social services because there is no money to pay for it,” Kelly said in an email aimed at shifting the blame away from the governor and on to the bill’s supporters. “Rather than adding billions to our debt and risk further delaying payments to social service providers, the General Assembly needs to stay in Springfield and negotiate a balanced budget alongside structural reforms that create jobs and grow our economy.”

If you’re like me, the soundbytes and “official” statements from elected officials about the budget impasse and its effects on higher education funding are farcical – filled with grandiose language that says more about Springfield’s lack of accountability than the students who are being used as political bargaining chips.

And, if you share my frustrations, let me help sum up your thoughts on the war of words to this point in time, “So, what?”

So, what does this mean for the thousands of Illinois college students

who are waiting to know if they will be able to attend school next semester? So, what does this mean for Illinois colleges and universities that, according to Peoria Public Radio, are out more than $72 million because of a lack of MAP funding?

Now that each side has washed its hands of any responsibility for selling short the futures of thousands of Illinois students who depend on MAP, it seems state elected officials have abdicated their responsibility to residents and students, alike.

And, all of this politicized nonsense underscores something this news editor knows to be true: the MAP grant made me who I am, and every college student in the state deserves the opportunity to say the same.

Combined with the federal Pell grants, MAP allowed a kid who was raised by his grandmother and carried a lunch vouture in high school to earn his associate’s degree from the College of DuPage and his bachelor’s degree from Roosevelt University. MAP gave me the opportunity to redeem myself from, let’s call it, a less than stellar high school career and become the first member of my family to earn a four-year degree.

It wasn’t easy growing up with less than most of my classmates, but my family and I made due. There was zero guarantee that I would be able to afford college after I graduated high school, regardless of academics. When I made the decision to go to college and learned about the various forms of student financial aid available, an entire world of possibilities opened up for me. I learned to be grateful and accountable, and I learned just how important and necessary a college education is in today’s society.

I also learned just how critical those first years of college can be for students who don’t have the same family and financial support as many of their peers. Understanding that is the main reason why I would one day like to be a community college professor and help students who, like myself, are trying to beat the odds and gain access to higher education. And, it’s why our elected officials should stop talking and fund MAP. Most importantly, however, my college experience taught me to be patient.

But as a former MAP recipient – someone who owes his success to student financial aid and someone who feels current college students are more than collateral damage in a political war of words – my patience with Springfield and the politicians we’ve sent there has worn thin.

Niles Taste of Sister Cities celebrates diversity Niles holds first Taste of Sister Cities Festival since 2012

The Niles Taste of Sister Cities is back with plenty of food, dancing, music and raffle prizes.

On March 19, the first Taste of Sister Cities in the past four years was held at Niles Family Fitness Center. The festival aims to spotlight the culture of Niles’ four sister cities – Pisa, Italy; Nafplion, Greece; Leixlip, Ireland; and Lmanova, Poland – and the village’s growing Korean-American community.

Niles has a sister city relationship with the four municipalities.

The relationship with Pisa is particularly significant, as it was the first municipality to become the village’s sister city.

Niles’ most prominent landmark is a half-scale replica of the Italian city’s iconic leaning tower.

Niles hasn’t held a Taste of Sister Cities Festival since 2012.

Village Trustee George Alpogianis, who has served as the president of the Niles Sister Cities Committee since January 2013, told the Bugle that it was largely due to the organizational changes within the committee.

In February 2013, the committee split off from the village and became an independent nonprofit organization.

At the time, the village board was concerned about having village trustees and employees sitting on the board of directors for a villagerun organization.

Directors took trips to the sister cities, and village trustees were concerned that it might create the appearance of a conflict of interest.

Alpogianis said the committee board needed to restructure the organization before it was ready to organize the festival again.

“Wewantedtorenewrelationships with our sister cities,” he said. “We also wanted to restructure the board and the committee, and we wanted additional transparency in the way

the program is being run.”

When asked what he meant by “transparency,” Alpogianis explained that they wanted to get residents who weren’t village officials or staff on the board, and get more regular residents involved in the organization.

As for Saturday’s event, the festival kicked off at 4 p.m. Niles eateries came to offer ethnic food, representing the countries where the sister cities were located, as well as other ethnic communities in the village. Woori Korean Village BBQ and Super H Mart offered Korean food, while Mykonos restaurant and Alpogianis’ Kappy’s American Grill brought some Greek offerings.

Lone Tree Manor and Niles Polish Deli represented Poland, while Minelli Meat and Deli, Graziano’s pizzeria and Riggio’s restaurant represented Italy. Other Niles eateries, such as Chasers Sports Bar and Grill and Howard Street Inn, also joined in the fun.

Niles firefighters also shared homemade chili at the festival, and Joseph Mularkey Distributors provided drinks.

A number of Niles businesses and organizations offered prices for the silent auction. Niles Lions Club held a 50-50 raffle, with the winner getting half of the proceeds and the rest going to the Niles Sister Cities Committee. Village Manager Steve Vinezeano won the raffle and immediately donated his winnings to the committee.

The festival also had plenty of entertainment. Joe Walega & His Happy Hearts Orchestra polka band performed.

Dancers from the Pancrecian Society of Chicago, a Crecian Greek fraternal association, performed traditional Greek dances, while students from the Des Plainesbased Dillon-Gavin School of Irish Dance also showed their moves.

Italian singer Enzo Incandela performed during a half an hour break between the two dance performances. Both Walega and Incandela encouraged guests to dance along as they played and sang.

Alpogianis told the Bugle that he was happy with how the event turned out.

“[I feel] really, really happy, because... it’s like a first-time event,” he said. “Restarting the whole event – it’s exciting. I think we did very well.”

Alpogianis made a point of giving credit to the many people who helped put the festival together.

“I’m only as good as the people [involved with the festival] - board members, community members and volunteers,” he said. “And, it’s really all of their time and effort that helped make it successful.”

During the festival, he encouraged guests to thank any volunteers they met.

Mayor Andrew Przybylo said he was happy that Niles had many public events, and that Taste of Sister Cities was a great opportunity to celebrate Niles’ growing diversity.

But there is one change he hopes to see happen soon.

“There are a lot of ItalianAmericans, Polish-Americans, IrishAmericans and Greek-Americans in Niles, but there’s a lot of KoreanAmericans too, so hopefully, a [South Korean] city would become our sister city,” he said.

Niles Library testing automatic renewal program for some items Patrons will be able to renew materials online, over the phone or in person

The Niles Public Library is currently developing a program that would renew any item that’s currently out automatically.

The renewals won’t be indefinite – the library is keeping the limits for how many times materials can be renewed, and the program won’t kick in if someone put a hold on the item set to be returned. It would also only apply to physical books, magazines, video games, CDs, DVDs and Blu-Rays. Any ebooks and other digital items patrons check out would still be subject to the same procedures as before.

Most library materials can be checked out for three weeks unless renewed. The only exceptions are Hot Pick DVDs and video games.

Under the current policy, most library materials can be renewed

for up to four times. Hot Picks books, can only be renewed for up to three times, while Hot Pick DVDs and Blu-Rays can only be renewed once. And while in most cases, both Niles residents and non-residents whose cards are registered at the library can renew items, only Niles residents can renew Hot Pick materials.

Patrons can renew the materials online, over the phone or in person using the library’s automatic check-out materials. The current policy states that items that are on hold can’t be renewed.

Cyndi Rademacher, the library’s assistant director, told the Bugle and the new automatic renewals won’t change that.

During the March 18 Niles Public Library Board of Trustees meeting, Library Director Susan Lempke said that staff has been testing the new function for the past few weeks, but it wasn’t until recently that they were able to resolve errors.

the staff would keep testing it for a few more weeks, just to be sure.

She added that the library would also want a few more weeks to get the word out before the function is implemented.

“We hope to be able to roll it out at the beginning of May,” said Rademacher.

The assistant director also said that the library is planning to launch text message based alerts to let the patrons know that the items they placed on hold are available

for pick-up.

Sasha Vasilic, the library’s Public Relations and Marketing Supervisor, said that it would be an addition to the existing alert methods.

Dental Plans The Niles Public Library Board of Trustees will consider whether to extend dental benefits to employees’ families.

Under the current policy, the employees don’t get dental insurance. Instead, the library will reimburse them for dental expenses – so long as don’t add up to more than $1,000 per fiscal year.

The new policy would keep the cap the same, but it would also allow employees to get reimbursements for their spouse’s and children’s dental expenses.

According to the board packet materials, only full-time employees who worked for at least 30 days are eligible. With 44 full-time employees on staff, the library normally budgets $44,000 for the policy, but the amount it actually spends is usually lower. In fiscal year 2014, the library spent a total of $16,724, while in fiscal year 2015, it spent $14,747. While the totals for the FY2015 fiscal year, which started in on July 1, 2015 and will end in June 30, 2016, aren’t available, the document indicates that the library spent $6,857 so far.

According to Niles Library director Susan Lempke, the resolution was proposed after some employees wondered why the library doesn’t have dental health insurance. The staff looked into what would happen if the library does give employees this type of insurance benefits, and realized that insurance would mean that some employees may not be able to

keep their doctors. Expending the reimbursement eligibility, Lempke said, would improve the benefits while still give employees choice and keeping the overall spending the same.

Originally, the board was scheduled to vote on the issue during its March 16 meeting. But when the resolution came up for vote, trustees Karen Dimond and Carolyn Drblik expressed concerns about the legal implications of the change.

“We need to review this and figure out how we’re going to be handling it,” said Drblik. “I’d like to table and I’d like to table it for the budget discussion.”

She said that she was also concerned that trustees Tim Spadoni and Patti Rozanski, who were elected last year, weren’t familiar with what kind of benefits the library offers to its employees.

The special meeting to review the budget for the next fiscal year, which is scheduled for April 28, would be a good opportunity to bring them up to speed, said Drblik.

Board President Linda Ryan, who works as a librarian at Maine Township South High School, said that she wasn’t sure the delay was warranted.

“It’s not increasing [the reimbursement amount], it’s not adding it to any budget, it’s just disbursing it in a different way,” she said.

Rozanski said she was fine either way. Spadoni asked if there was any pressing need to make the changes, and, upon finding out that there wasn’t any, said he was fine with delaying it.

After some more back and forth, the board decided to table it until April 28.

wins in OT First-ever overtime game one of many highlights in boys’ game

In the first overtime game in the history of the Voyager Media Prep Shootout, Team Mark took down Team Scott 120-119 Sunday night at the Sullivan Center on the University of St. Francis campus for the eighth annual event.

It was Lockport’s Brandon Credit who hit the game-winning three-pointer in the corner to give Team Mark the lead in the final minute and Team Scott was unable to convert on two different opportunities to win the game.

The two teams were tied at 112112 at the end of regulation in a game that didn’t appear it would be close early.

Team Scott jumped out to a 9-0 lead and led 27-11 early on.

Team Mark slowly chipped away at the deficit the rest of the game and trailed 68-58 at the half.

A big run gave Team Mark its first lead at 97-94 as the two teams went back-and-forth the remainder of the game.

Team Mark’s Harold Davis of JCA was the MVP after scoring 23 points with five three-pointers.

JCA’s Jalen Jackson scored 21 points, Joliet Central’s Malik Fuller tallied 19 for Team Mark, while Devon Sams of Bolingbrook had 15 and Brad Perry of Maine South scored 14.

“It was good time,” Perry said. “It was a good way to send out my high school basketball career. I never played with any of these guys and it was a unique experience to play with and

against guys I haven’t played.

It was fun. I haven’t had those unique experiences, especially the one where I drove up the floor and reversed jammed.”

Credit tallied 10, Jacob Buchner of Plainfield South had nine, Zach Grady of Bolingbrook scored five and Matthew Mahlke and Denature DeYoung each had a basket.

Downers South’s Donovan Ferguson had 17 and Elijah Goss of Plainfield East scored 15 to lead Team Scott.

Kevin Krieger (Plainfield North) and Antowine Locke (Bolingbrook) each had 11, Jordan Reed (Plainfield East) had nine, Kyle Domin (Westmont) and Scott Gustafson (Plainfield Central) scored eight, Richie Elias (Plainfield North) and Darick Anderson, Jr (Bolingbrook) had six, Tommy Digan (Maine South), Justin Windt (Plainfield Central) and Patrick Hunt (Northridge Prep) each scored five and Jon Arenas (Maine South) added two points. Henry Thompson (Plainfield North) also competed.

“It was a lot of fun,” Arenas said. “There were a lot of good players out here. I got to know some of the players and just being out here competing was fun. It is something I will always remember. It was a fun game, just too bad we couldn’t get the win at the end. It was cool to play with the other players and I wish them luck in college.”

Girls all-star shootout won by Team Mark A red-hot first half from Plainfield Central’s Hennessey Handy was enough for Team Mark to cruise to a 79-56 win over Team Scott Sunday at the Eighth Annual Voyager Media Prep Shootout at the Sullivan Center on the campus of the University of St. Francis.

Handy scored 17 of her gamehigh 21 points in the first half en route to being named the MVP of the game.

“I had a lot of fun. We communicated and played great and it was a good experience to graduate and be able to play in an all star game,” Handy said.

Her point total is the second most in the game’s history, behind the 24 points from Gabby Williams in 2013.

“I tried to do as much as I could.

I wanted to break the record because people were telling me it was only 24,” Handy said. “I just like to go and go and go. I love the game of basketball and it was a great opportunity to play in this.

Team Mark took a 9-2 lead early in the game and despite a run from Team Scott to cut it to 12-8, Team Mark broke the game open to lead 34-11 and 44-26 at the half.

Every player scored for Team Mark. Joliet Central’s Monica Barefield had 13, while Mia Farrell of Joliet Catholic scored nine.

“It was great to play with Monica (Barefield) and other players I have played with or against since fifth grade<’ Farrell said. “It was really cool. Everyone was pretty selfless for an all star game. It was a really fast paced game for us not knowing each other. We seemed to really gel and had the same tempo and ran with each other.

“I have only seen like three of these people my whole life, so I didn’t know these other people even existed. It was nice to play with a bunch of good other people and put my jersey on one more time and represent them here.”

Alba Garner also walked away with hardware after being the 2016 Izzo Award recipient for her hard work and character both on and off the basketball court.

“I wasn’t expecting it and I was just listening and all of a sudden was like, I do those things,” Alba Garner said. “It was awesome.”

accompanied by his sons Ryan (drums) and Sean (bass), as well as vocalist Riccards, in performing a variety of jazz styles.
