VILLAGE NEWS >> MORTON GROVE

Kaewwilai pilots drone to conduct flood research Morton Grove’s Kaewwilai pilots Gettysburg College drone to conduct flood research As a first-generation college student, junior Alyssa Kaewwilai of Morton Grove always dreamed of using cutting-edge technology to research the natural world. Today, through Gettysburg College’s Innovation Lab-a space designed for the exploration of bold, technological ideas-she is piloting a drone to detect flood patterns on campus. It is a project that has far-reaching implications, most notably offering insights that may better protect the College’s iconic landmarks from costly water damage in the future. “Over the years, we have experienced excessive flooding in certain areas of our campus,” said Kaewwilai, an environmental studies major with a concentra-

tion in GIS (geographical information systems) and computer science minor. “My project’s goal is to evaluate the terrain levels that are most prone to flooding, and hopefully leverage this data to safeguard Gettysburg’s infrastructure.” A participant in the College’s eight-week Digital Technology Summer Fellows Program, Kaewwilai gained access to a DJI Mavic Pro Platinum Drone and earned her Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) remote pilot certification to legally fly the aircraft under the Gettysburg College domain name. “Drones are a relatively new technology. They’re becoming a really hot topic within the science community and a powerful

tool for research,” said Kaewwilai, who as a sophomore conducted an environmental study with Prof. Andy Wilson to monitor bird populations utilizing drone technology. “For my fellowship project, I flew the drone around different areas of campus-like Stine Lake, the East and West Quads, and Quarry Pond-gathering highquality, GPS aerial photos. Then I uploaded the images into the Innovation Lab’s photogrammetry software to make 3D interactive models of the College’s elevation levels.” Kaewwilai manufactured handheld replicas of her targeted locations using Gettysburg College’s 3D carver. These wooden replicas allowed her to physically touch the sloped terrain and develop a greater understanding of how various water patterns affect the College landscape. “I’ve always thought of myself as an independent thinker, but I

have never been given so much freedom with such state-ofthe-art technology as I received through my Digital Technology Fellowship. I am very impressed with how much I learned,” said Kaewwilai, citing the mentorship she received from Dr. Eric Remy, director of educational technology, and other Gettysburg faculty members throughout the summer. “I discovered that there isn’t always a black and white answer for projects like mine, so you have to figure things out, utilize your resources, and be creative to find solutions to your challenges. I think what drove me, specifically, was my determination to finish the project and do my best work.” Kaewwilai’s project earned the attention of the Pennsylvania Geographical Society, which awarded her first place in their Undergraduate Student Paper Competition this fall, following a speech she delivered that high-

lighted her scientific findings. Her work will soon be published in the 2018-19 issue of the Pennsylvanian Geographer. “This accomplishment is really important to me,” reflected Kaewwilai, who participated in the Gettysburg College Leadership Certificate program and now serves as the marketing and design program coordinator for the Office of Multicultural Engagement. “As a first-gen student, my parents didn’t go to college, so in a way, my fellowship brought me back to when I didn’t know anything about the college application process and I had to figure out much of it on my own. But through experiences like these, I have discovered that the adversity I’ve faced in my life isn’t a weakness, it is actually my strength. It has taught me to overcome challenges and achieve great things that I never thought were possible.”

NEWS BRIEFS >> NILES

Przybylo won’t seek 3rd term as Mayor ‘Despite the fact that I never said I was going to put forward a referendum to allow an exemption to term limits, some of my political opponents have made an issue of it.’ Andrew Przybylo, mayor of Niles since 2013, has announced, unequivocally, that he will not run for mayor again in 2021. The announcement was made in a release sent out on March 18. “I cannot make this any clearer”, Przybylo said, “I will not seek another term as Mayor of Niles in 2021, period.” Przybylo said he decided to make the announcement at this time to set the record straight, once and for all. “Despite the fact that I never said I was going to put forward a referendum to allow an exemption to term limits, some of my political opponents have made an issue of it. It was even reported in the media as fact when, in truth, it was not. So, let me say again that I have no intention of running for mayor in 2021 when my current term is up. I am respecting the will of the vot-

Niles, Ill. (March 18) – To help preserve the vitality of our urban forest, the Village of Niles has taken steps to control Cottony Maple Scale and the Honeylocust Plant Bug on parkway trees. In the past, the one pest that has been especially abundant in northeastern Illinois is the soft scale insect known as the Cottony Maple Scale She also was very involved in the church’s Renew Group. Marian, or “Shrimp” as her oldest friends referred to her, was a lover of life, and all its wonders and quirks. She was a voracious reader, loved to travel, and was an avid camper. One of her many great joys in life was to have George Sr. burn a hot dog or a marshmallow over an open camp fire. Yeah, she loved them burnt. She never met a coffee cake she didn’t like and enjoyed her glass of wine every day. which may or may not have

ABOUT COTTONY MAPLE SCALE Jackson says, “Usually the first sign of Cottony Maple Scale is a

der the tree. Another negative of honeydew production is that it attracts ants and wasps to the area and also coats the leaves, which promotes the growth of black, sooty mold fungi.” In the overwintering stage, the insect is oval, flat and pale to dark brown without obvious legs, antennae or wings. Later, a white cottony egg sac two to three times the length of the scale is produced in the spring. Dati said this gives the appearance of cotton balls being strung from twigs as shown in the picture.

TREE WITH COTTONY MAPLE SCALE The Village of Niles has hired Tru Green to spray affected trees with a refined dormant oil before bud break to control the scale. The oil is not harmful to life or property. Village Forester Todd Jackson said, “While other trees may be infested, silver maple trees are its favorite host in Niles.” Work will begin on March 25th weather per-

NORTH GIRLS TAKE SHOOTOUT BY RANDY WHALEN For the Bugle www.buglenewspapers.com

Anyone that walked in right after tip-off of Voyager Media Girls Basketball All-Star Shootout would have thought there was a lot of scoring in the opening moments since the scoreboard read 18-18. But it was all by design. The 18-18 score to start the game was in honor of Beth Dunlap. The Downers Grove North junior was fatally struck by a car on Feb. 19. She wore No. 18 as a setter on the Trojans volleyball team, helped them to a state runner-up finish last fall and was a member of the Voyager Media All-Area volleyball team. Throughout the end of the basketball season, Dunlap had been honored, so Voyager Media Publications decided to open the scoring at 18-18 in her memory. The 18-18 start meant a higher scoring total than usual as the North team, which included the Downers Grove North players, pulled away for a 91-81 vic-

tory at the Voyager Media Prep Shootout All-Star game on Sunday, March 17 at the University of St. Francis in Joliet. Niles West’s Sam Galanopoulos scored a game-high 20 points to lead the North squad to victory, 15 coming in the second half. “The first half, I was just feeling everything out.” She said. “Then we got down by one and they got it to three and I was not losing that game. I didn’t care what it takes, so I turned it on. It is all fun and games until it gets real and then it is do whatever it takes to win the game.” Galanopoulos, who will be featured next week as the 2019 Girls Basketball Player of the Year, was also named the Most Valuable Player of the Shootout. Galanopoulos was on the bench in the final minutes. She was informed that she was just a few points away from tying Plainfield East’s Gabby Williams All-Star game record with for most points with 24, set in 2013. Galanopoulos, however, choose not to go back in the game. SEE NORTH PAGE 6

Galanopoulos was not the only one that lit up the scoreboard. Maine South’s Nicole Scales helped tip those in the North’s favor with 18 points, four rebounds, and three steals. “Sam and I have been teammates forever (in AAU), so getting to play with each other on the high school level is fun,” Scales said. “There are a lot of players from schools we never play, even in tournaments, so it is nice to see their styles of play and how they work.” Jalyn Harris from Downers Grove North also contributed big time as she sank a trio of 3-pointers in scoring 11 the first half. She finished with 13 points and nine rebounds. “It was really fun to play with a different group of girls,” Har-

THURSDAY, MARCH 21, 2019 | BUGLENEWSPAPERS.COM ris said. “It was a lot of fun and it was competitive — it was a nice Sunday. Caya Apostolou from Maine East tallied nine points, while Elisha Dunlap from Bolingbrook tallied six and Kaeli Ford from Lockport added five points. Jennifer Krizka finished with seven points and five rebounds for the South team. But the multi-athlete at Joliet Catholic Academy has made contributions not only in sports but off the field too. With that in mind, she was awarded the Jeremy Izzo Character Award, which is named after the former JCA boys basketball coach, who passed away in 2010. “It’s a great honor to receive the award,” Krizka said. “It’s great to keep and carry on that tradition that Jeremy Izzo started at JCA. This is what they preach at JCA,

to be a character person.” The basketball game was also the final one for Krizka, who is a softball standout for the Angels. She will continue to play softball at Oakland University in Michigan. “When I was a freshman I came here to watch some of the senior’s play in this all-star game,” Krizka said. “I imagined myself playing in this game. So it was just a great experience to play with all these different players out here.” The game was played with 20-minute halves and a running clock except in the last two minutes of the half. Ahead 27-25 the North team went on an 8-0 run and that built to a 30-15 spurt for a 57-40 lead heading into the final minute of the half. It was 5745 at halftime. Trailing 65-55 five minutes

into the second half, the South squad had a 13-2 stretch to take its first lead ay 68-67 on a layup by Joliet Central’s Shawnton Brown. “I loved the comeback there,” Brown said. “I had fun and it was fun to play with all the different girls from the different schools. During this past season, Brown and her Steelmen teammates went 24-7 and advanced to the sectional title game. In the regular season, they had a couple of close losses to Minooka in Southwest Praire games. But in the all-star game, Brown (17 points, 7 rebounds) and Minooka guard Cierra Bachmann (16 points, 9 rebounds) were quite the duo. “It was fun to play with Cierra,” Brown said. “Her basketball IQ is off the charts. She drew up a play for us and we executed it.

“Going 24-7 and setting records at Joliet Central was an accomplishment. It was a blueprint for our young girls to go out and accomplish more.” The South team’s last lead was 73-72 on a 3-pointer by Brown’s Joliet Central teammate, Anette Hymon (6 points). But Galanopoulos earned her MVP honor by scoring the first five points in a 9-0 run that gave the Noth the lead for good at 81-73 with 3:33 to play. Shannon Smith, from Plainfield South with six points, and Savanah Johnson, from Minooka with four points, also scored multiple baskets for the South team, • The North guys got off to a hot start, but could not hang on as South rallied back for the win.
