On Oct. 30, 2014, the Morton Grove Public Library bought a building directly to the west, at 6200 Lincoln Avenue, in order to have more space to expand its programs and services.
But since April 2017, the library has been trying to sell it. As library director Pam Leffler explained to the Bugle, once her employer bought the building, it was determined that bringing it up to code would be “cost-prohibitive.” So instead, the library has been trying to sell the building off. It hopes to use the proceeds from the sale to
renovate the library’s basement – one of the few parts of the building untouched by the 2014-2015 renovation. The library’s current building was built in 1963. In 2014, the library set out to fix the roof and abate asbestos in the process. When it became clear that the abatement would require it to close off most of the third floor and mezzanine, the library decided to use the opportunity to do some other planned renova-
tions. And so, from September 2014 to May 1, 2015, much of the building was closed off. At the same time, the library worked to buy the nearby 6200 Lincoln Avenue building. Because the library building was built before Americans with Disabilities Act, it wasn’t required to be accessible to people with disabilities so long as the structure remained largely the same. The planned renovations were substantial enough to trigger
an ADA requirement. The library was worried that this would reduce usable space, so they decided to buy another building and use it to hold certain programs and services. But, by the spring of 2017, the Morton Grove Public Library Board of Trustees decided that it wasn’t going to work out. “The board decided to put it for SEE LIBRARY PAGE 2
