Chicago’s Sweet Side Niles Library exhibit looks back at Chicago’s confectionery history

It’s the kind of exhibit that makes your mouth water.

For the next three months, the Niles Public Library will allow patrons to take a look back at the history of Chicago candy, chocolates and other treats. The “Sweet Home Chicago” traveling exhibit, which is on loan from the Elmhurst History Museum, takes a look at the confectionery companies that got their start in Chicago. The exhibit features brands that are still going strong, brands that fell into decline and brands that vanished completely.

To coincide with the exhibit, the library is hosting a series of candythemed events, film screenings and book discussions.

On March 4, the library held an official opening that drew in officials from the village of Niles, the Niles Park District and East Maine School District 63. Virtually everyone who talked to the Bugle said the exhibit was a trip down memory lane. Some said it was

a chance to relive the thrill of getting candy when they were children and reminisce about the candy they liked the best. Almost everyone had a candy-related story, and many people looked back fondly at childhood favorites that simply no longer exist.

In the decades following the Great Chicago Fire, the city became home to many confectionery companies. Some started there, while others moved from other cities – attracted by Chicago’s status as one of the country’s major freight transportation hubs. Many of the products that were produced there – Wrigley gum, Crackerjacks, Tootsie Rolls and Snickers – remain popular to this day. And while the city’s role as the “candy capital of the world” eroded somewhat over the years, many companies still call it home.

The exhibit touches on the sweets themselves, the advertising campaigns, the stores that brought them to the masses, their impact on popular culture, and the way in which the industry changed in response to economic pressures

and changing public taste.

He told guests that the museum is a fairly low-profile organization, and when he started putting on the Sweet Home Chicago exhibit a few years ago, he was surprised at just how many people became interested.

“As soon as I started planning it, I got calls from other organizations, saying ‘will it travel,’” Tawzer said.

While that wasn’t originally in the plans, he decided to design the exhibit so that it could be easily packed up, unpacked and displayed in any venue.

The exhibit was displayed at the museum for three months, went on a tour and then went back into storage. It may have stayed in storage if not for Dodie Frisbie, Niles Library’s adult and outreach services supervisor.

Sasha Vasilic, the library’s public relations and marketing supervisor, said staff thought it was a great idea.

“We were looking for something big to get people in the door,” he said.

Vasilic said plans for the exhibit were finalized in the spring of last year, but staff decided to hold off.

Evanston mental healthcare facility helps young adults lead successful lives Program focuses on mental health issues

Late last year, Yellowbrick mental health center launched a program to help young adults develop skills necessary to lead successful lives.

The Evanston-based organization provides psychiatric care for young adults living in Evanston and communities within

10 miles of the facility, including Niles and Morton Grove.

According to Dana Bender, head of the new Core Competence Home Health Service program, the new initiative was an outgrowth of Yellowbrick’s program to help teens who were treated at the center and were now trying to live on their own. The center thought that something similar could help other teens who are struggling with mental health issues. Bender

said that Yellowbrick felt that there was untapped demand, and so far, their outreach have been bearing fruit.

Bender explained that youths who undergo treatment at Yellowbrick may be well enough to live on their own, but that doesn’t mean they no longer need any help. They still need support, and they need help developing skills and habits that will allow them to continue to get better and lead healthy, independent lives.

During the summer, they didn’t want it to overshadow the summer reading program. During the fall, they wanted to focus on promoting the newly opened Creative Studios and Wonder Ground. They didn’t think too many people would be willing to brave the cold during winter.

But with spring on the horizon and weather warming up, Vasilic said this was a perfect time for the exhibit.

“People [will] want to come out of their homes and check it out,” he said.

The exhibit is located on the third floor of the library building, to the right of the stairs, in the area where magazines and newspapers are stacked. The displays are lined up along the walls, and there is an interactive display that asks visitors if they could identify candy bars. Over by the west wall, the staff set up a screen that plays “Candyland USA,” a documentary narrated by former CBS anchor Bill Kurtis.

Tawzer told guests that he was pleasantly surprised at how the exhibit looked at the library.

“When public libraries [display it], we are always concerned about how it is presented, but I’ve been very pleased,” he said. “I hope word of mouth will spread and people will come to enjoy it here, because it’s amazing.”

attended the opening. Niles Mayor Andrew Przybylo also attended, as did village clerk Marlene Victorine, village manager Steve Vinezeano, and many village trustees, among other officials.

Affy Tapple, the Niles-based maker of coated apple treats, and Skokie-based Georgia Nut Company sponsored the exhibit.

The former also sent its mascot to the opening night celebration.

Library Director Susan Lempke said that, as she listened to other guests share their childhood sweets memories, she could only think of one thing.

“I do remember, after Halloween, dumping my candy bucket,” she said. “I’m a librarian, so you know what I did – I sorted them.”

Lempke said she thinks that it’s those childhood memories that gives the exhibit its appeal, and she invited everyone to look around as much as they wanted.

After seeing the exhibit, District 63 Superintendent Scott Clay told the Bugle that he was impressed.

“I actually learned quite a few things about candy in Chicago,” he said.

Library trustee Barbara Nakanishi said the the exhibit brought back memories.

“I just love looking at the old packaging, because they don’t have it anymore,” she said. “When you see the packaging, the taste comes back.”

As you go to vote you may see a lawn sign and wonder, who is taking my vote.

In three words, “absolutely no one.”

The second referendum on the ballot seeks to restore Illinois law allowing for emergency appointment authority to the currently elected Niles Board of Trustees and the mayor. This law allows the mayor and trustees to fill trustee vacancies if one should occur in the twoyear period between elections, which in turn keeps government functioning.

Some recent Niles history on trustee vacancies: Seat 1) In May 2009, trustee Bart Murphy resigns and Al Weel is appointed. Rosemary Palicki (defeats Weel) is elected/sworn in May 2011.

Seat 2) In June 2009, trustee George

Vote ‘no’ and demand ‘unbiased’ appointment process At the upcoming March 15 primary the voters in Niles will again be asked to vote on how vacancies on the Niles Board of Trustees are filled. In November of 2014, Niles voters overwhelmingly voted to remove the power to fill trustee vacancies from the office of the mayor.

This was not a narrow decision but a better than 3 to 1 vote to remove the possibility of partisan appointments to a trustee vacancy.

Ideally, all vacancies should be filled by an election of the voters. The 2014 referendum calls for this but not in a timely fashion. The mayor of Niles has publicly talked of mayhem and devastation happening in Niles in the aftermath of a vacancy. Based on this fear, he is asking for the voters to reverse their almost unanimous vote in 2014 and give the power back to him in the upcoming primary – the second referendum on

Under current Niles law, two of these positions would sit empty for 24 months and three positions would sit empty for 18 months.

What does all this mean? If those vacancies occurred today, perhaps for other reasons, such as a trustee passing away or extended illness, Niles could not (as examples): A). alter the budget to allow for additional purchases of road salt during a severe winter. B). sign a lease agreement to replace an ambulance that was in a traffic accident. C). issue a bond to fund time sensitive matching grant

that was approved by another agency for flood control.

Niles voters, these are very real examples of the current state of affairs and why you should disregard that lawn sign directive. If you doubt my word, call village attorney Joe Annunzio for his legal opinion, 847-588-8007.

I strongly urge you to vote “yes” to restore emergency appointment authority to the board of trustees and the mayor. All other municipalities in the state of Illinois have this authority.

Note, in the vacancy cases above, your vote either removed or affirmed all of the appointed trustees.

Vote “yes” for appointment authority and keep our village economically sound and safe.

But the mayor and the board of trustees are shortsighted in thinking this is the only solution. This is just one reason why we need independent appointees on the board. There is always more than one solution but you need different thinking people to realize that!

It is possible to keep the power of trustee vacancy appointment out of the mayor’s office and yet still fill vacancies before an election.

Our current board has offered no other solution as to how to uphold the vote of the electorate and make sure the government will function no matter what may occur except to eradicate the certified decision of the voters and return the responsibility of filling trustee vacancies to the mayor, something that was strongly turned down just a little over a year ago by Niles voters.

The village started a practice of creating independent positions to work towards open and honest government.

The position of the independent inspector general could be utilized to form a committee of Niles residents to

be a selection committee if and when a vacancy occurs on the Board. The inspector general would be charged with making sure there are no conflicts of interests.

This is one way the voters’ decision could be upheld (no mayoral appointments) and the village would be able to function with a full board if a vacancy occurs (alleviating the mayor’s fears).

Granted this would require changes (not elimination) to the existing approved referendum of November 2014. But this change would have no other motive than that of upholding the will of the people and the best interests of the village.

On March 15, the voters in Niles need to vote “no” on the reversal of their vote on how trustee vacancies should be filled. Then we must demand that the board of trustees, including the mayor, find an independent way to guarantee unbiased appointments.

Loyola Notre Dame wins second straight regional championship

Notre Dame defeated Loyola 52-50 to win its second Class 4A regional title in as many years.

“This is the first time Notre Dame has gone back to back regional wins since the early 90s,” Dons coach Tom Les said. “It was a huge win for us.”

Not only did Notre Dame earn the win, it did so at Loyola, who was the host of the regional.

“Beating Loyola at Loyola was huge for us,” Les said. “They are a very well coached, disciplined team. They shoot really wall and shoot even better on their home court. For the game, they made 11 threes.”

The Dons were able to overcome those long range shots.

“I thought we persevered,” Les said. “Despite them making 11 threes, I thought we played pretty good defense. We contested them

and they made pretty tough shots and we found a way to win.”

Notre Dame won how it has all season, getting solid play from different people.

“We had different guys step up,” Les said. “Lucas Simon was really good in the first half and he ended up with 10 points and all four of his field goals were in the first half.

Then Ammar Becar had a big time game in the second half. He had 16 points in the second half led us with nine rebounds.”

The Dons don’t have to rely only on one superstar to carry them to any win.

“We have had multiple guys lead us in scoring all season, so it hasn’t fallen on the shoulders of one player,” Les said. “It is a group that contributes. That has been the M.O. of the entire season.”

Notre Dame faced top seeded Evanston Tuesday in a Glenbrook South Sectional semifinal. A win would put it in the sectional final at 7 p.m. Friday.

Maine South’s season looked to be over with just under five minutes remaining in the third quarter of its regional quarterfinal contest versus Zion-Benton last week at home.

The Hawks, who fell behind 3014 at intermission, trailed the Zee Bees by 22 points (36-14). But the Hawks mounted a furious rally, first cutting Zion-Benton’s lead to 38-30 following an 11-0 run, and then grabbing their first lead since the first quarter (43-40) with 2:02 to play. Maine South pulled out

a 44-43 triumph when 6-foot-11 senior Brad Perry sank the second of two free throws with 3.8 seconds to go.

Maine South, however, saw its 2015-16 campaign come to an end last Friday night as defending Class 4A state champion Stevenson posted a 60-42 victory.

ZION-BENTON The Hawks dug themselves a 16-point deficit at the half after going 0-for-7 from the floor and hitting just 3 of 7 from the line. But there was no panic in the Hawks’ locker room during the break.

“Coach (Tony Lavorato), he came in, he wasn’t hollering,” Perry said. “He said, ‘You know, this will be the last game we play, or we can come out and kick some butt.’ We came out, we responded and we held them to 13 points in the second half.”

“In my 13 years here it was probably the best second half that I’ve ever been (associated with) here at Maine South and it needed to be against a really good team,” Lavorato said. “When you’re down like that you need to get stops and

“A lot of people try to get it (back) all at once, and I thought we chipped at it. We got it to 14 (points), and got it to eight at the (end of the third) quarter. Then I thought we executed; we didn’t hang our head and we just kept playing.”

Arenas paced the Hawks with 12 points and seven rebounds, while Perry added 11 and sophomore Tommy Gardiner 10. Senior Tommy Digan chipped in with nine.

Perry said he refocused after missing the first free throw.

“I was like, ‘All right.’ ” he said.

“I went into my own place. I kind of felt that I got away from it with the crowd stomping their feet and everything. I just said, ‘I’ve got to make this shot,’ and I hit it.”

“He’s worked so hard at it,” said Lavorato, referring to Perry’s improved free-throw shooting.

“I had no doubt in my mind that he was going to make it. But he’s worked really hard at the free throw line and he deserved that.”

Arenas ended up fouling out of the game with 1:28 left.

“When I fouled out, you know there’s nothing much I can do at that point to besides cheer on my teammates and believe in them,” he said. “They did a great job, and Brad Perry hitting that last free throw was clutch.”

“He didn’t force it,” Lavorato said. “He didn’t go 1 on 5. I thought he did a really nice job.

STEVENSON The Hawks already were familiar with Stevenson, having played the Patriots in the in the inaugural Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic and beating them for third place.

Maine South’s plan going into its regional title matchup with the Patriots was to try and contain their top two scorers, Justin Smith and Ryuji Aoki, and they did just that, limiting them to four points each.

However, Aidan O’Connell and Jordan Newman picked up the slack, tallying 27 points and seven three-pointers between them while Willie Herenton added 13 in Stevenson’s regional championship victory.

The game-deciding quarter turned out to be the second, where the Patriots outscored the Hawks 12-6 and took a 28-17 lead into halftime.

“I thought we did a nice job contesting shots but their role players and their bench players (came through),” Lavorato said.

“I was really impressed with the depth of their team. They shot

very well. They played at a very, very high level.

“I give our kids a lot of credit. We battled and we played hard and we fought and we executed our system, but they were just better than us. You tip your hat but you still don’t like to end the season anyway.”

Arenas and Perry led the Hawks with 21 and 10 points, respectively.

Arenas was the only returnee from the 2014-15 season who played significant minutes. Perry did see varsity action, but in a reserve role.

The remainder of the Hawks’ roster had little to no previous varsity experience, yet the Hawks still won 21 games, opened the year with seven straight victories,won the Maine West Thanksgiving Tournament, and won seven of their last eight games prior to their regional title game loss to Stevenson.

“We were a refurbished team,” Lavorato said. “You have a group of individuals, and to be successful you’ve got to play together. We probably had the most depth we’ve had in a long time where we went nine deep this year. I was just really proud of our guys. I was disappointed just like anybody that the season’s ended, and it breaks my heart that I’m not going to be able to coach our seniors anymore. When you have a group of individuals that gave so much as they gave, you just want to keep on coaching them.”

Steps to minimize mealtime mayhem

By Sue Becker | Bugle Staff Although I don’t love to cook, I do love to eat, so I’ve done all I can to make meal planning as painless as possible. Whether you’re the cook in your home or are lucky enough to be the beneficiary of someone else’s cooking, enjoy these lessons I’ve learned to make mealtimes less stressful.

Plan meals for the week Rather than frantically staring at the open refrigerator and freezer each evening trying to figure out what to make for dinner.

I plan dinners for the upcoming week every Sunday. I write them on an erasable whiteboard attached with magnetic clips to my refrigerator. It’s amazing how much less stressful my day is just knowing I can answer the question “What’s for dinner?”’’

Create a rotating menu routine I have 21 index cards, each of which contains one dinner suggestion, as well as any special ingredients that I’m not likely to have on hand. Rather than having to put a lot of thought into what to make for dinner, I just grab the seven index cards in the front of the stack and use them as my starting point.

I check my calendar to determine which nights might require a quick meal or an early or late dinner based on my husband’s and my schedules. I reorder the seven index cards to correspond to each evening, and write those meals in order on my whiteboard. I write the special ingredients from the index cards

a list of those frozen meals on my meal planning whiteboard so I don’t forget them. If I know I’ll have a busy week, I incorporate a frozen meal into my meal planning. come to order

Create a themed menu routine Another option to make meal planning easy is to have a theme for each day of the week. Themes help narrow down your options, which for me is the biggest challenge of meal planning.

For example, Monday is breakfast for dinner; Tuesday is Mexican; Wednesday is pasta; Thursday is soup; Friday is fish; Saturday is pizza – you get the idea. You could also include a night where family members take turns planning (and maybe even cooking!) dinner.

Shop once a week When your meals are planned ahead of time and your grocery list is planned accordingly, you may only have to hit the grocery store once a week. Think of how much time you’ll save!

Double up If your freezer space allows it, make double batches of everything so you can cook once and reap the benefits twice. I keep

Prepare ahead I review my meal planning whiteboard each evening so I know what’s planned for dinner the next day. I prepare as much as possible by chopping vegetables, measuring out spices, thawing meat and doing whatever else I can to make the next day’s meal preparation quick and easy.

“It’s really difficult to help people with life skills without being in there with them,” said Bender.

“You can talk to them, but you can’t really do anything actively about it unless they’re in their living environment.”

The center thought that the program can benefit other young adults within its service area. It may be youths who are getting therapy or other psychiatric help, or simply youths who have trouble transitioning to independent living.

“We think there’s a market there for people who just aren’t making it,” said Bender. “There’s a window of opportunity where we can help them make a change.”

She said that young adults today experience considerable stress – and that there was nothing wrong with getting help.

“This age group is under so much pressure to succeed,” said Bender.

“It’s such a difficult process and people need additional support to live independent, productive lives.”

One of the major goals of the new Core Competence Home Health Service program is to help young adults before their situation deteriorates to the point where they would require hospitalization.

“We want [the youth] to know they have hope, they don’t need to wait until they get to a desperate place,” said Bender. “That it’s something that they can prevent.”

That includes a wide range of possible services that Yellowbrick groups into four major categories.

Healthy Lifestyle and Wellness services include help with getting good nutrition and good exercise, learning how to shop for groceries and cook. The Education and Career Development services include educational counseling, connecting clients with tutoring resources, job coaching and help with job search. The center will also advocate and liaison with the educational institutions the client

attends. The ReCognition services help clients develop and improve their cognitive skills – for example, clients that have trouble being organized and following through on their goals will get help in those areas. And finally, the Independent Living services help clients with skills such as time management, managing their money and improving social skills.

Bender said that young adults themselves can apply for the program, but it’s also something that can be arranged through their parents or therapists they are working with.

Before young adults can take advantage of those services, they get assessed by a Yellowbrick occupational therapist and psychiatrist Based on each applicant’s need, the Yellowbrick staff work with the applicants, their parents and any other professionals that may be treating them to develop an individualized plan to ensure that they get whatever help best suits their individual needs.

The length of time they are in the program also varies depending on their needs. The plan details can also be adjusted if circumstances warrant it.

The services are available wherever the patients live – whether it’s a family home, their own residence or a dorm.

There is one caveat – Yellowbrick

services aren’t free. The initial assessment costs $500. For the program itself, patients are billed based on how many hours the center’s staff spends at the patient’s home at the rate of $200 an hour.

Bender said that different services take up different amounts of time, and some services don’t require home visits at all.

She said that she is optimistic about the Core Competence Home Health Service program’s prospects. No other organization on the North Shore provides the kind of services Yellowbrick does, she said, so there is plenty of demand.

“It feels like there’s lots of interest,” she said. “As soon as we put out fliers and started marketing, we got calls. There is need that’s not being filled right now, and we hope to provide services for people who need them.”

District to use biometrics system in cafeterias Parents can choose to opt out of the new system

Students in East Maine School District 63 will soon be able to get their lunches simply by tapping their fingers.

On March 2, the district’s board of education voted unanimously to approve a new cafeteria payment system from Geneva-based PushCoin. Instead of scanning card bar codes, it will use the student’s fingerprint pattern.

There will also be alternatives for students whose parents choose to opt out of the new system.

David Bein, District 63’s chief school business official, said PushCoin offered the cheapest option and the equipment would be easy to replace. He hopes that District 63 will start installing the new system this spring and have it fully up and running in all schools by the beginning of next school year.

Bein originally suggested using PushCoin during the Aug. 5 meeting. At the time, he said schools needed to replace the existing system because its components were either nearing the end of their useful life or already past that point.

He argued that biometrics would be a better alternative to lunch cards, especially for elementary school students. Unlike junior high school students, who simply

Using fingerprints simplifies the process significantly, Bein said.

Back in August, Bein stressed that the touch screens do not actually capture the image of a fingerprint. Instead, the system scans the fingerprint pattern and converts into an encrypted digital code. Under District 63 policy on biometric data, that code would be destroyed no later than 30 days after a student graduates, transfers or otherwise leaves the district.

Bein told the board that since the August meeting, he looked at several alternatives but wasn’t happy with any of them.

“They were more costly and/or involved third party proprietary software and clunky terminals,” he said, adding that PushCoin offered two main advantages.

They will provide the hardware and the software up front, and if something breaks, it would be cheap and easy to replace. The system uses tablets, which can be purchased at any store that sells electronics, rather than requiring specialized equipment.

Under the contract, the district will not have to pay PushCoin up front. Instead, it will get a percentage of every payment that gets processed. The amount it gets is capped at 10 cents, and Bein estimated that it would get about 4.1 cents for every regularly priced lunch and about 0.6 cents for every free or reduced lunch. That would add up to about $6,500 per year.

When parents pay for their kids’ lunches, they will still be able to either send money to the office or pay online by credit

card. PushCoin will charge a 30 cent transaction fee, which Bein said is lower than any alternative system.

He told the board that he visited Geneva and St. Charles school districts that already use PushCoin’s system, and said the schools did not have any regular problems. A few students still don’t use biometrics, but the fact that cashiers know who they are and can get alternative equipment ready quickly helped ensure that the process would still go smoothly.

Additionally, opting out would be simple.

“As part of the registration process, parents would have an option to opt out,” he said.

Students in lower grades would be able to use cards, while students in higher grades would able to use the keypad.

Board member Sheila Urban said she wanted to make sure the parents understand that PushCoin will not scan the images of their child’s’ fingerprint.

Bein said the board would discuss the changes during the next board meeting.

Earlier in the meeting, Bein mentioned that the district is also looking at a new food vendor. He told the Bugle that, among other things, the bid specifications indicated that the district preferred a vendor that could provide more fresh food, as well as a greater variety of ethnic food.

Bein told the board that he hopes the district will be able to get the system in place later this spring.

“Doing the initial upload [of student information] would be easier to do while students are here in session,” he said.

The concert was the fifth in the nine concert 2015-16 series, which is organized by SJB Music Director Marek Rachelski.

A world-class chamber music ensemble, the three members of the Avanti Guitar Trio-Jason DeRoche, Julie Goldberg and Wesley Hixson--blended pristine technique and sensitive interpretation that has earned them critical acclaim for their engaging concerts and varied programming.

With a repertoire that ranges from the Baroque to Contemporary, the Avanti Guitar Trio was founded in 2010 in Chicago. The trio has performed for the Waukegan Chamber Society, Chicago Composers’ Consortium, Illinois Wesleyan University, Quincy University, Church of Beethoven and Harold Washington Chicago Public

Visitation was Feb. 24 from 5 to 9 p.m. with prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at the Skaja Terrace Funeral Home, 7812 N. Milwaukee Ave., Niles.

Three additional concerts of the 2015-16 season will include The Niles Metropolitan Chorus and Musica Lumina Orchestra performing the Mozart: Requiem K.626 on March 20, at 3 p.m.; The Singing Boys of Rockford on April 24 at 3 p.m. and Music from the Slavic World on May 15, at 3 p.m.

The March 20 concert is the last of three commemorative concerts given this season in honor of the legacy of the Rev. Stanley Rudcki, the former chair of the Niles College of Department of Fine Arts, who founded the Niles Concert Choir and Niles Symphony Orchestra in the 1960s.
