LoVerde Sports and Recreation Center opens Grand opening honors former Niles Park District Executive Director Joe LoVerde

Village of Niles trustee and former Niles Park District Executive Director Joe LoVerde got choked up a few times as he thanked the park officials for naming Niles’ newest recreational center in his honor.

The park district held a grand opening of the new LoVerde Sports & Recreation Center on Nov. 4 at 10:15 a.m. It includes two indoor basketball courts, an indoor soccer field complete with artificial turf, a dance studio and a currently unused multipurpose children’s activity room. The new facility will allow the park district to expand some of its athletic programs and operate them in the property it owns instead of renting outside facilities.

As previously reported by the Bugle, the 7847 Caldwell Avenue building went through a number of uses over the last few decades. The Niles Park District acquired it in 2015. It was discovered that, while the underlying structure and some of the foundation was sound, the building surfaces and interiors deteriorated so badly that it was cheaper to replace them.

According to a poster in the lobby during the grand opening, because the building wasn’t built from scratch contractor Wight & Company, which handled both the design and construction, saved $4 million. Wight & Company was able to recycle 1,460 tons of brick and block and 112 tons of steel iron.

The building incorporated environmentally friendly features such as LED interior lighting, LED parking lot lighting with sensors that adjust brightness based on natural light, rain gardens and water filtration areas and “water efficient toilets and urinals.”

While there was some discussion of adding concession areas during the planning process, the park district ultimately decided against it.

Instead, a snack vending machine, two beverage vending machines

and a coffee dispenser were put in the northeastern side of the front lobby.

During the planning process, the facility was called Caldwell Recreation Center. But in March, the park district invited Niles residents to suggest names. On April 18, the Niles Park District Board of Commissioners voted to name it after LoVerde.

He was appointed as the parks’ Executive Director in 1997. As his successor, Tom Elenz, noted during the opening ceremony, during LoVerde’s tenure, the park district added and expanded a number of facilities, acquiring what would become Golf View Recreational Center, the revamp of Oasis Fun Center, the revamp and expansion of IceLand Skate indoor and outdoor ice skating complex and the construction of Washington Terrace Park skate park. LoVerde retired from the position in September 2016.

The center opened in Oct. 21, but the ribbon-cutting wasn’t held until two weeks later. The rainy weather forced the ceremony to move inside, but it didn’t stop a large number of residents from joining park

employees, current and former commissioners, most village trustees, Illinois State Representative John D’Amico (D-15) and other officials to mark the occasion. All of LoVerde’s family – save for one of his daughters, who had an unexpected work commitment – was in attendance as well.

Elenz was the first to speak, praising the park board, Wight, the staff and everyone who made the building happen.

“Making this building a reality took a lot of planning, dedication and teamwork,” he reflected. “I want to thank everyone on the park district staff. It is because of your dedication that we were able to bring Niles another great building.”

Pat Byrne, the current park board president, said he was impressed with how the facility turned out.

“As commissioners, we don’t get a lot of ‘wow’ moments, but wow!” he said. “Looking at today, it’s such a tremendous facility.”

Byrne thanked everyone involved, reserving special thanks for LoVerde.

North alumna running for county board Since March, Bushra Amiwala has been running for the Cook County Board of Commissioners seat currently held by Larry Suffredin (D-13th)

DePaul University student and Chicago native Bushra Amiwala is only a sophmore, but her ambitions go far beyond most of her peers.

Since March 2017, she has been running for the Cook County Board of Commissioners seat currently held by Larry Suffredin (D-13th).

The district spans Skokie, Morton Grove and the Niles Township portion of Niles, as well as most of the county’s North Shore suburbs near Lake Michigan and Chicago’s Rogers Park and West Ridge neighborhoods. If elected, Amiwala would be the board’s first Muslim-American commissioner.

As Amiwala explained to the Bugle, she felt that she could bring a fresh perspective to the board, work to improve transparency and figure out ways to reduce expenses while improving the quality and effectiveness of services. As of Nov. 3, Amiwala had around twice the number of signatures legally required to get on the ballot, and she’s aiming to get enough to put her at three times the legal minimum.

And while her campaign was only able to raise “a little over” $2,000 so far, she is hoping that a fundraiser scheduled for Nov. 13 at Morton Grove’s Marylin’s Restaurant at 7 p.m will help.

Amiwala is a life-long resident of the 13th District. A daughter of Pakistani immigrants, she was born in Rogers Park and spent a few years there. By the time she was 10, she and her family moved to Skokie. As she explained to the Bugle, living in two different communities showed her just how much the place where one lived could affect opportunities and access to resources, especially

As she got older, Amiwala became more and more socially conscious.

“At first, it was issues that affected me, issues regarding my gender and regarding my faith,” she said.

“And then, I got into [issues related to access to food], and how hunger and poverty affects a lot of people.

I noticed we focused on issue only on Thanksgiving, even though it’s a problem year-round.”

That is why, in November 2016, she got involved with Northside People Organized to Work, Educate and Restore (Northside POWER), an organization established by A Just Harvest, a Rogers Park-based non-profit working to end hunger in Chicago and the North Shore suburbs.

“I worked with political side of hunger with Northside POWER [to lobby against] a legislation that was debated, that would be cutting funding for food stamps and government benefits,” Amiwala recalled. “I remember realizing that the amount that’s being set aside for those people was already limited, and [the legislation] was extremely detrimental to this population.”

Her campaign website also mentioned that, while volunteering with Northside POWER, she also lobbied for more educational funding.

Amiwala told the Bugle that her experience with the organization made her realize just how important legislation was in average people’s lives.

“I realized that Cook County, especially Cook County board, had officials who had there for long time,” she said. “And [Cook County Commissioner] is one of those positions that is often overlooked. Just having that link, [between] com-

munity members and someone who is already in power – I felt that link was missing. And I felt Cook County was a good place to start.”

One of the major reasons why she was running, Aniwala said, was that, as a young Muslim woman and a daughter of immigrants, she could bring a perspective that no one else on the current board has.

“We have same people making decisions that people feel don’t speak on their behalf,” she said.

Another major priority for Aniwala is saving money and improving services – something that, she said, goes hand-in-hand. The Cook County Jail, for example, is one of the county’s largest expenditures, and she would work to reduce it.

Helping former inmates find stable, productive lives, so they are less likely to return to crime, would be a major part of it.

“When people are let of jail – there’s no way to really get back into society,” she said. And that’s one of the things Cook County should provide – jobs opportunities and programs that should help them assimilate into society.”

Amiwala also feels that the county board needs to take a hard look at its programs to see if the money is being spent effectively. She cited CountyCare, a Medicaid expansion program run by the Cook County Health and Hospitals Systems for individuals whose income isn’t low enough to qualify for regular Medicaid, but isn’t higher than the 133 percent of federal poverty level threshold.

(In the interest of full disclosure, this reporter is enrolled in CountyCare) “CountryCare, iss not being utilized to the fullest extent,” Amiwala said. “[Many DePaul students I spoke to] didn’t know it was resource being offered or even exists.

If it isn’t a resource that is being utilized, where is this money going?”

That is why, she said, she was in favor of more transparency in Cook County government. If the resource is there, Amiwala added, residents should be aware of it.

When asked about the Cook County minimum wage increase, which was approved last year and while Suffredin vocally supported,

Aniwala said that she supported it as well.

“I think min wage increase is actually a good thing. I think current [state] minimum wage is not a living wage. I don’t think it hurts small business in long run. I think minimum wage increase is necessary, especially for people with low incomes who have to work multiple jobs just to make a living.”

When asked about the recently repealed Cook County sweetened beverage tax, Amiwala said that she opposed it because she felt it disproportionately affected lowincome residents, for whom every penny counted.

“The [rationale] behind this tax is that it helps end and prevent childhood obesity,” she said. “What happened instead is that it take money from people who already could not afford it.”

However, Amiwala added that she refused to take a large contribution from Citizens for a More Affordable Cook County Political Action Committee because its major backers were large soda and beverage companies such as Coca Cola and Pepsico.

At the time Amiwala started her campaign, she was the only candidate running against Suffredin, so whoever won the Democratic Party primary would have won the general election by default. Since then, former Village of Niles trustee Chris Hanusiak entered the race as a Republican. Amiwala admitted that she wasn’t familiar with his platform, but, generally speaking, she didn’t believe a Republican commissioner was right for the district.

“His character shown a man who was caring, dependable, trustworthy and honest,” Elenz said. “I can’t think of a better tribute then nam-

LoVerde began his speech by addressing the weather. “First of all, if you’re Italian, you know that if it rains, it’s good luck,” he said.

He said that the facility’s name was an honor for the entire LoVerde family. “I’m not sure I can express in words how grateful I am,” he said.

He thanked “from the bottom of

[his] heart” all of the commissioners past and present, the village staff and elected officials, Morton Grove elected officials, Wight officials and the park district employees.

“Thank you each and every employee of the park district – because of your heard work and dedication, we’re here today.”

Trustee John Jekot, who also serves as the executive director of

Golf Maine Park District, which serves northern end of Niles and portions of unincorporated Maine Township, told the Bugle that he was impressed with the facility.

“It’s going to benefit the community as a whole, whenever on my end of Niles or [Niles Park District’s],” he said. “Because of the climate we live in, we can never have enough indoor facilities.”

Nibbling away at the Affordable Care Act

Insurance companies have already prepared for this and have cushioned the blow to them by charging higher premiums to everyone who buys in the individual market

As annual enrollment for Obamacare insurance approaches on November 1, the law itself and the people who have come to depend on it for health coverage are both facing an uncertain future.

President Trump’s recent executive actions affect the complicated insurance mechanics of the Affordable Care Act, and they haven’t been well explained in the news media. This column will explain how those changes affect you.

Congress has tried but has not been able to “repeal and replace” the law that has brought health insurance to some 10 million Americans who buy insurance on the state shopping exchanges and about 10 million more who gained access through Medicaid expansion.

The failure of Congress to pass the “repeal and replace” legislation did not mean, though, that the law would remain intact.

In mid-October President Trump’s executive action hollowed out a big chunk of the ACA, throwing insurance marketplaces into a tizzy and possibly resulting in higher prices and less coverage for many. In the end, the president’s actions may succeed in gutting the law that has divided so many Americans.

To understand this, let’s take a step back. Legislators who wrote the law knew that a big reason people did not buy health insurance was cost. Most middle class families without employer coverage struggled to pay the premiums in the so-called individual market where they had to shop. Those at the bottom of the income ladder either qualified for Medicaid or did without insurance. About 44 million Americans did not have insurance when the law took effect four years ago.

The ACA tried to make it easier to buy coverage, and Congress did that in

It required insurers to cover all people - sick or well - who applied for coverage in the individual market and offered two kinds of subsidies to help those with lower incomes.

One comes in the form of tax credits the government advances to shoppers who buy Obamacare - compliant policies that meet certain rules and regulations, such as offering 10 essential benefits. Prescription drug coverage is one.

Those subsidies are based on a family’s income and phase out when a family’s income exceeds 400 percent of the federal poverty level or about $98,000 for a family of four and $48,000 for a single person. People with lower incomes receive the largest subsidies.

Those tax credit subsidies are not affected by Trump’s order.

The other subsidy is called a costsharing subsidy, sometimes referred to as a CSR and aimed at Americans whose incomes are at or below 250 percent of poverty, about $62,000 for a family of four and $30,000 for an individual. They reduce the amount of out-of-pocket spending for people who get them. Those who qualify pay less for the coinsurance, deductibles and copayments a policy may require.

These are the subsidies on the chopping block. The president said the government will not continue funding

them which means the government simply will not pay insurance companies for reducing the out-of-pocket costs to policyholders. Policyholders will still get the subsidies unless Congress changes the law. Insurers will have to swallow the losses, at least for now.

If you get those subsidies, you’re not off the hook, though. Insurance companies anticipated that the president would axe the subsidies and they increased their premiums for most or all Obamacare policies, including the silver plans, the ones people must buy to receive the extra help with cost sharing.

The Congressional Budget Office just projected that premiums before the tax credits are applied would increase on average by about 20 percent.

In some states average rate increases have been much higher.

So who will be hurt the most by the Trump administration’s latest move which some experts argue undermines the stability of the health law?

Insurance companies have already prepared for this and have cushioned the blow to them by charging higher premiums to everyone who buys in the individual market.

People with incomes under 400 percent of poverty will still receive their tax credits, which will reduce their higher premiums, and they will continue to get their CSRs. Those in the individual market who have higher incomes and receive no tax credits to lower their premiums will feel the most pain. The Kaiser Family Foundation reports that 44 percent of buyers in the Obamacare market did not qualify for tax credits.

That’s almost 7 million people.

“Ironically, it is these unsubsidized folks who have complained the loudest about Obamacare’s big premiums and deductibles,” says Washington D.C. insurance consultant Robert Laszewski. “They will now have even more to complain about.”

The administration wants to let them buy cheaper policies that cover far less than Obamacare insurance. These sets of maps feature the 33rd division of the Illinois National Guard, which was the only distinctly Illinois division that saw active service in France during the war. The United States entered the war on April 6, 1917 and, unlike previous wars, most soldiers did not serve in units specific to their home states.

The war ended on November 11,

1918 a date now commemorated as Veteran’s Day in the United States.

Student/veteran gives back to community As part of an Oakton service project, Durov was a student documentarian for the Wall that Heals Oakton Community College photography student and Vietnam veteran Les Durov of Des Plaines, who served in the U.S. Navy from 1969 to 1974, is helping others learn about the war through service learning activities at Oakton.

As part of an Oakton service project, Durov was a student documentarian for the Wall that Heals, a traveling half-size replica of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C. The reproduction was erected the last weekend in September at the Lake Memorial Pavilion in Des Plaines. Pictures he took at the wall will be part of an Oakton exhibition that will be on display Nov. 9-12 at the Des Plaines Public Library, 1501 Ellinwood Ave. “History books are great,” says Durov, who worked on the USS Midway aircraft carrier. “However, through this project I was able to capture images that people can relate to and learn about what happened in Vietnam. Through my photos, I tried to depict the feelings and emotions of people who visited the wall.”

Durov says the replica of the wall stirred up a whirlwind of emotions, noting, “Viewing the wall brought back a lot of my feelings about the conflict. I have friends whose names are on the wall. It was a nice way to say good-

bye to many of the people I served with in Vietnam. While it was sad, it helped bring a feeling of closure.”

Oakton Professor of Art and Graphic Design Judy Langston helped coordinate the service project for her digital photography class. Her assignment required students to compile a photo documentary of activities related to the Wall that Heals.

“This was a great learning undertaking for Oakton students,” Langston says. “Students had the opportunity to speak personally with veterans and understand more about a time of turmoil in our country’s history. Students took more than 100 thoughtful and capturing images including veterans in front of the wall looking at the names of those who gave their life for their country.”

Durov says the project was especially personal, as he alone took more than 200 images: “I wanted to get as many photos as possible. I wanted to document that not enough was done for veterans who came back from Vietnam.

Servicemen who returned never got the respect they deserved and were actually spit on when they came home. These images will invoke different feelings for each viewer.”

Durov is an avid photographer and has been taking pictures since

he was 10 years old.

“I’ve always been playing with cameras as long as I can remember,” he says. “I thought this Oakton service project was a wonderful way to sharpen my photography skills as well as to expose myself to self-learning.”

While capturing images, Durov says there were plenty of opportunities for understanding more about what transpired in Vietnam.

“There were so many facts for people to learn at the Wall that Heals,” he recalls. “Some people who served in Vietnam were as young as 14 and there are more than 58,000 names on the wall.

Most of the veterans who perished were 18 years old or younger.”

The Successful Practices Network (SPN) and AASA, The School Superintendents Association, with financial support from Houghton

Mifflin Harcourt (HMH), have embarked in partnership on this exciting initiative. SPN and AASA will be collaborating with Maine 207’s team to learn more about the district’s work and to highlight the lessons that 207 has learned, to share with school and district leaders from across the United States.

As part of this process, SPN will conduct later this year a 2-day site visit to see Maine 207’s work first hand. This visit will include meetings with groups of stakeholders, as well as classroom visits. SPN’s goal at this point will be to understand Maine 207 programs, students served and innovative approach in greater detail.

Early in 2018, after the site visit, SPN will produce a case study of Maine 207’s work to highlight challenges faced, innovative ap-

proaches implemented and the impact of that work on student learning and achievement. These case studies will be disseminated nationally by both SPN and AASA as models and inspiration for schools and districts. The Innovative Best Practice Schools are being determined using tailored assessment tools based on SPN’s Learning Criteria to Support 21st Century Learning. This framework was developed as an outgrowth of SPN’s five-year partnership with

the Council of Chief State School Officers, with funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, to identify criteria for schools that are preparing students not just for the state tests, but for postsecondary education, the workplace, and for their roles as citizens.

GURNEE — On paper a matchup between Warren’s 6-foot, 5-inch Notre Dame-bound receiver Micah Jones and Maine South’s 6-3 Rory Hayes favored Jones.

Now, take Hayes out of the mix and insert 6-0 safety Brian Barry and one may assume Jones would dominate the Redhawks.

Well, they would be wrong.

Barry stepped in for Hayes, who missed the game with a medical issue, and held Jones to two catched on only a handful of targets.

“Rory Hayes, a two-way starter for us, is in the emergency room today with his tonsils and we found out about 3 p.m. we weren’t going to have Rory and Brian Berry stepped in for him and he did a great job,” said Maine South coach Dave Inserra.

When he was told of his assignment, Barry was up for the challenge.

“I would have followed him into the bleachers – I didn’t care,” he said. “I knew my safety had my back, so I just played him inside and did whatever I did to not let the quarterback go to him.”

Maine South go off to a 17-10 halftime lead, but also missed opportunities to extend the lead – something the Hawks did not let slip away in the second half.

“I thought we left some points on the field (in the first half ),” Inserra said. “We missed a field goal, we fumbled in the end zone. We were moving the ball, so we didn’t want to panic. In the second half, we fixed some things on the offensive line and we knew they were being aggressive and we could go over the top and we hit some big passes.”

Flexibility the theme for Oakton men According to Mick Reuter, head coach for the Oakton Community College men’s basketball team, flexibility will be the theme for this year’s edition of the Oakton Owls.

“With nine freshmen on the team this year, we’re young and lack a lot of height,” says Reuter, who is entering his 10th year as head coach. “However, with the roster we have, many athletes can play and guard every position.

That flexibility will allow us to create more pressure on defense and create turnovers. Offensively, we’ll be hard to guard which will allow us to stretch the floor and create scoring opportunities.”

One of the newcomers Reuter will be relying on heavily this year is freshman guard Jordan Irving (Morton Grove, Maine East High School). Irving led the Blue Demons in scoring his junior and senior years.

“Jordan is an offensive machine,” Reuter says. “With our team’s makeup this year, we won’t be looking for him to carry the load in scoring. Instead, Jordan will play various positions and help all over the court.”

Irving adds, “Playing at the college level will be different for me.

I’ll be needed to contribute more defensively. However, I bring a competitiveness to the court that will help the team.”

Freshman Jeremiah Goldwair (Louisville, Kentucky, Male High School) is penciled in at point guard this year.

“Jeremiah is lightning quick,” says Reuter. “He’s a smart player

who also is in the Air Force Reserve and might miss a few games for us because of that.”

The Owls will have experience with two returning players, Marion Johnson (Des Plaines, Maine West High School) and Christos Vassilakos, a Greek immigrant who attended Maine South High School.

Johnson, the team captain, will be looking to expand on last season when he started 27 games, averaging 10.2 points and 6.3 boards per contest.

“We’re looking forward to a good year,” says the 6-3 Johnson, one of the team’s tallest players.

“We’re smaller than we were last year, but we will use our speed and athleticism to our advantage.

We plan to outhustle opponents and always be the fastest team on the court.”

Vassilakos, a solid defender who stands 6-4 and weighs nearly 200 lbs., started seven games last year.

“Christos will be one of our regular starters this season,” Reuter says. “He’s one of the team’s hardest working players and sets the tone for us on defense with his physical presence.”

Irving says that even though this is a young team, the Owls have already grown in cohesiveness since starting practice back in August: “This is going to be a fun team to play on. We’ve been working hard on our communication with each other. Having that good chemistry will be beneficial and will help us to win games.”

Successful season comes to end for Niles West

The month of November ended with a heartbreaking loss for the Niles West’s girls volleyball team as it was eliminated by New Trier in the sectionals semifinals in Winnetka.

Despite losing the first set 2520, the Wolves came back and won the second match 25-17 before falling short in the final round 25-19.

Niles West junior outside hitter Natalia Pehar recorded ten kills and four aces.

“We just need to stay focus more and anticipate in every point at a time,” Pehar stated.

“But it’s ok, we have next year so it’s all good.”

The Wolves had another spectacular season (27-7) with an astounding 8-0 home record and finished their third straight season with more than 20 wins.

They also captured their second-straight regional championship.

When head coach Stacy Roth arrived at Niles West in the fall of 2004, her main goal was to turn this program around and create a consistent winning atmosphere.

Finally, she managed her first winning season with the Wolves in 2010 after six years of pure frustration; this program has been improving ever since then.

On the ground, it was Fotis Kokosioulis, who carried the ball 23 times for 216 yards and three scores.

“Fotis is a warrior,” Inserra said. “How many times did he get a little banged up and just kept coming back and he is just lightning. You can see why he is such a special player.”

Kokosioulis said he was willing to take on whatever load the team needed.

“We have to do what we have to do to win the game. If they want to throw me in the slot, if they want to run me, I will

Niles West had a tremendous run in during the 2016 season as they won the regional and eventually the sectional title. The Wolves appeared in the Class 4A state tournament in Peoria where they advanced to the state semifinals before being eliminated by Mother McAuley.

That team is arguably the greatest unit this volleyball program had ever established; finishing the year with a 28-10 record which is the most wins in school history. After that magical season came to an end, former captains Kaila Johanson and Eleni Baldourdos graduated.

Roth will now lose seniors Nicole Zelazko, Natalie Scalero, and Franzyl Denila whom have been a huge help on carrying their program to a higher level of excellence.

“We’re losing three seniors,” Roth stated. “But we have some younger kids coming in for next year; including Natalia Pehar’s younger sister.” “Natalia will be back as a senior, so I think we’re expecting to do pretty well for next season.”

Natalia Pehar started her voleyball varsity career during the 2015 season as a freshman and was All-State honorable mention list at the end of her second season, however, despite achieving

“I don’t think we have ever played each other in the history of the schools,” Inserra said.

“They have been this far a lot, they are a well-coached teams and have been to championship games.”

PHIL DEAR PHIL, As a parent, one of the best things you can do is be a living, breathing example of the importance of giving and caring about others. There’s nothing wrong with having some stuff, but many of today’s marketing messages can lead kids to believe it’s all about them. And the sad truth is advertising firms are often more aggressive with their teaching than parents are in theirs.

I would encourage you to find giving experiences in which you can participate as a family. Volunteering for a day at a homeless shelter is a wonderful example of giving that requires absolutely no money. Or maybe you could pull out your wallet, and spend the day shopping for groceries and Christmas gifts for families who are financially less fortunate.

Make sure your kids are in-

volved physically, mentally, and emotionally in the entire giving process. Let them experience the grateful, and sometimes ungrateful, responses that go along with giving. With a little thought and planning, you can create some incredible teaching and family bonding experiences that will change everyone’s lives forever!
