City mulls tightening rules for employees’ side jobs ‘At what point are we losing quality vendors because employees are seeking outside employment?’

The Park Ridge officials and staff are planning to look at whether the current rules regarding city employees working parttime for other companies are strong enough to avoid conflicts of interest.

During the Oct. 16 City Council meeting, Ald. Marc Mazzuca (6th) raised concerns about Park Ridge Police Department Deputy Chief Lou Jogmen working as an evaluator for Stephen A. Laser Associates, the company that had a contract to evaluate candidates applying to become city police officers and firefighters.

While, by that point, the company had withdrawn from the contact, Mazzuca wanted to get more details about what happened and review how the city’s procedures could be modified to make sure something like this doesn’t happen again.

During the Oct. 23 Finance and Budget Committee of the Whole meeting, Mazzuca urged the city to suspend Laser Associates from future city contract. But City Manager Joe Gilmoe and City Attorney Julie Tappendorf pushed back, arguing that, because the company withdrew from the contract and there was no actual conflict of interest, there was no ground to suspend Laser.

In the end, the aldermen agreed to look at whether they could change the policy to keep this

According to the report provided to the aldermen, in Jan. 1, 2017, Jogmen filed a request for off-duty employment to work with Laser Associates. In keeping with the existing police department procedures Jogmen pledged not to work on evaluations of Park Ridge candidates, and Park Ridge Police Chief Frank Kaminski not seeing any other potential conflicts of in-

terest, approved the request.

In Aug. 24, the city Human Resources staff contacted the Kaminski, telling him that during a candidate evaluation, Jogmen made a comment that, while he wouldn’t be doing the evaluations, Laser Associates did good work.

Board ends salary freeze for trustee, mayor Constraints of term limits caused concern about fairness of freeze

Village of Niles Board of Trustees voted unanimously to repeal a moratorium that kept the salary increases for the mayor and three of the most recently re-elected trustees from taking effect until April 30, 2019.

On Sept. 27, 2016, the village board approved the salary increases. Under the state law, salary increases can’t take effect until the officials’ terms are over. That means the increase would have kicked in for Mayor Andrew Przybylo and trustees George Alpogianis, Danette Matyas and John Jekot in 2017, while trustees Joe LoVerde, Denise McCreery and Dean Strzelecki wouldn’t get their increases until 2019. The moratorium was imposed to ensure that all of the trustees’ salaries would increase at the same time.

During the meeting, none of the officials commented on the reason behind the moratorium repeal.

Przybylo subsequently told the Bugle that the officials reconsidered the rationale behind it, deciding that, with the term limits constraining trustees to three terms, repealing the moratorium would ensure that all trustees would get

The law firm found that that there was a scenario where Jogmen ‘s off-duty employment could run afoul of the policy: he has access to confidential PRPD employee files, which could be used in pre-employment screenings. Ancel Glink also found that this could become a problem if the city is ever sued for negligent hiring.

“This creates the inference that the city was willing to put citizens at risk by hiring unqualified police officers so that one of our employees can receive financial benefits,” the memo stated.

The memo emphasized that the law firm wasn’t accusing Jogmen of anything, but the very fact that it was a possibly could put the city

the increase over the course of two possible terms.

Until the Oct. 24 vote, the mayor’s salary was $4,000, while the trustees’ salaries are $2,500 a year. With the moratorium repealed, Przybylo’s salary went up to $11,400, while Alpogianis’, Matyas’ and Jekot’s salaries went up to $5,500 By comparison, the Morton Grove municipal code sets the mayor’s salary at $6,000 a year. The trustees’ salaries are set at $4,500 a year. The code also says that the village will reimburse the mayor’s and the trustees’ out-of-pocket expenses that are “incurred or reasonably expected to be incurred.”

Park Ridge salaries are more of a mixed picture. The mayor’s salary is $1,000 per month ($12,000 a year), while aldermen’s salaries are set at $100 a month ($1,200 a year).

Skokie’s municipal code doesn’t set the salaries, and the village board usually increases them once every few years. Following the 2017 election, the mayor’s salary went up from $32,200 to $35,000, while the trustees’ salaries went up from $8,760 to $9,500, respectively.

In most Chicago area suburban municipalities, a mayor doubles as a liquor commissioner. A Morton Grove mayor gets paid additional $2,000 for performing those duties, while Park Ridge, Niles and Skokie

mayors aren’t paid anything extra.

During the 2013 municipal election, the village residents approved two term limits referenda – one launched by the village board and one launched by Niles activist Joe Makula. Since then, the village’s legal position has been that the former referendum is the one they would abide by. Under that referendum, officials can serve as trustees for no more than three terms. That would affect Trustee LoVerde, who was first elected in 2007 and won re-election in 2011 and 2015. This mean that he is the only trustee who would not have been able to benefit from the increase whether the moratorium was in place or not.

Meanwhile, McCreery and Strzelecki were first elected in 2015, so they are eligible to run for two more terms. Meanwhile, Jekot and Matyas were elected in 2013, so they would be eligible to run for one more term in 2021.

Alpogianis’ situation is more complicated. He was first elected trustee in 2009, but the fact that he had six battery convictions while a teenager forced him to resign soon after he took office, as felons cannot hold public office in Illinois.

Alpogianis was pardoned by thengovernor Pat Quinn in the summer of 2012, allowing him to run again and win the seat in 2013. Assuming only the fully served terms count toward the limit, he can run again for 2021 as well.

As Przybylo explained to the Bugle, the village board decided to repeal the moratorium so that all trustees not constrained by term limits would able to get raises for two out of three terms.

“It’s not about starting at the same time, it’s about having the same benefits over the period of service,” he said.

Pryzbylo himself was first elected mayor in the 2013 and won re-election in 2017. Under the board term limit referendum, he is only eligible to run for two terms. This means that, if the moratorium were still in place, he would not have been able to get a salary increase.

The Village of Niles Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve a new customer service policy during its Oct. 24 meeting.

According to the board meeting packet, the policy simply codifies the existing practices and ensures all residents know what they are.

Copies of the policies will be posted in the village hall and other municipal buildings where residents get village services. The trustees praised the policy, saying it was good to have it all in writing.

The policy text is divided into two sections – the “customer service policy” and the “promise to

citizens.” The former states that all village employees and elected officials “will provide professional, courteous, and timely response to the service and information needs of the public and, to the best of their ability, work to remedy citizen concerns.” The later states that employees will state their name and department while interacting with residents, that the government will be open and transparent, especially when it comes to municipal budget, the elected officials and employees will follow “ethical practices,” that the village government is “dedicated to quality of life, health and safety, and economic security through best practice initiatives” and will practice “fiscal responsibility, high productivity standards, and responsible management of municipal assets.”

The policy was signed by Przybylo and Village Manager Steve Vinezeano.

The mayor noted that the document was developed with staff input.

“It was [writte] with the advice and consent on the staff.” Przybylo said. “They’re on board with it, and they feel like it’s right thing to do.”

Trustee Denise McCreery praised the policy. “ I’d like to think we’re doing this currently, but I support it beign in writing,” she said.

Trustee Joe LoVerde described it as a “wonderful document.”

“It keeps us all aware,” he said.

As the result, the city rescinded the permission for secondary employment.

On Sept. 25, Laser Associates sent a letter informing the city that Jogmen has proven to be too valuable of an employee to lose, so they decided to end their contract with the city. Park Ridge selected another contractor, and Jogmen was allowed to work for Laser Associates again.

During the Oct. 23 meeting, Mazzuca, who chairs the Finance and Budget Committee of the Whole, argued that the company should be suspended from bidding for the city contracts. “we [would] signal to any vendor that might be contemplating such a thing isn’t something we do in Park Ridge,” he said. “This would make it abundantly clear

that the playing field is level and it’s perfectly clear that employment has no bearing [on contracts].”

In response to a question from Ald. John Moran (1st), Tapendorff explained that, in her legal opinion, once Laser Associates stopped doing business with Park Ridge, any danger of conflict of interest and legal liability was rendered moot – at least under Council Policy Statement 18 as it’s currently written.

Ald. Roger Shubert (4th) said he wasn’t sure a “casual comment” should have kicked off a legal review. He worried that it would set a bad precedent for other employees, describing it as a “ticking time bomb.”

Addressing Mazzuca’s comments, Gilmore said conflict of interest regulations “could be tight-

ened up,” there was no ground to suspend Laser Associates.

“The question is – what would they do?” he said. “I’m not arguing that this isn’t potential conflict. We addressed the potential conflict, we resolved it, we started audits of all secondary employment.”

Ald. Nicholas Milissis (2nd) agreed that, as the policy is written, there wasn’t anything Gimore could do – which is why he urged the aldermen to figure out a way to tighten the language to prevent something like this from happening in the future.

Ald. Charlie Melidosian (5th) agreed that it was worth discussing what kind of changes the city council can put in place to keep the process “transparent and fair.”

Ald. Marty Joyce (7th) said he was open to tightening the language – but cautioned that issues

may still arise.

“In my experience, trying to write an all-encompassing policy that’s trying to cover all scenarious is very challenging and very difficult,” he said. “I have no problem with tightening it up, and writing more solutions. And there would be scenarios in the future that would challenge us again.”

In the end, the aldermen agreed to look into the issue, with Moran saying that there is one factor he watned officials and staff to keep in mind.

“At what point are we losing quality vendors because employees are seeking outside employment?” he asked. “Because that might keep [the city officials] from approving outside employment activity. I feel like that criteria should be part of the decisionmaking process as well.”

BY MARY SANCHEZ TRIBUNE CONTENT AGENCY A young mother of five, a survivor of recent cancer surgery, develops a new tumor - and discovers she is pregnant. The cancer is aggressive; to survive she needs chemotherapy, but that would buy only a few years more of life, if that. And it will kill the baby she is carrying.

What should she do?

What Carrie DeKlyen and her husband, a Michigan couple who faced this dilemma, decided has been the topic of much public commentary, most of it empathetic but some of it shallow and cruel.

Carrie DeKlyen chose not to undergo chemo, and she is now dead. Her child, named Life Lynn DeKlyen, was born just shy of 25 weeks after conception and died two weeks after her mother on September 20. A baby is considered full term around 39 weeks. Despite exemplary efforts by doctors, and being tagged as a “miracle baby” by media nationwide, Life didn’t have very good odds.

She weighed only 1 pound, 4 ounces at birth. In early September, Baby Life was delivered by C-section as her mother lay unconscious from a stroke brought on by her inoperable brain tumor. Carrie, 37 years old, left five other children, ranging in age from 2 to 18 years old.

Social media couldn’t hold back. What launched was almost a parlor game of “What would you do?”

Was Life’s mother selfish to deny her other five children their mother? Or was she a saint for

giving her baby a chance at life?

How about she was a mother facing a horrible decision that you wouldn’t wish upon anyone?

That’s fair.

Today, social media and internet discussion threads allow everybody to be a moral philosopher, although many don’t feel the obligation to be fair or empathetic or particularly rigorous.

The DeKlyens made their difficult choice in a manner consistent with their view that life starts at conception.

Abortion was never an option.

This view was obviously informed by the couple’s faith, and even their choice of name - “Life” - suggests perhaps a statement of principle, a political stand.

After the baby’s death, some remarked that the story would no longer resonate as a shining example of the pro-life ethos.

The cringeworthy rationale was that the family no longer had the child to hold up as an emblem of the cause.

Wrong. Carrie DeKlyen is still a great example of a woman choosing life for her child.

Others argued that the family’s faith was misplaced; God didn’t save the baby.

Yes, the family made religiously guided decisions.

The widowed father has been consistently quoted with the family’s view that God wanted them to choose the baby’s life over that of the mother.

“We’re pro-life,” Nick DeKlyen told the Detroit Free Press.

“Under no circumstance do we believe you should take a child’s life. (Carrie) sacrificed her life for the child.”

After the baby’s birth, Nick DeKlyen also made the decision that his wife had suffered enough and asked that her feeding tube and breathing machine be disconnected. She died soon after. Others with a more stringent views about what constitutes life might have

argued against that decision.

The fact that the family sold sweatshirts to raise money and used an internet crowdfunding site led to some tut-tutting that the family was taking pecuniary advantage of their plight.

However, despite the sanctimony of some internet commentators, most who contemplated the family’s tragedy were sympathetic.

People saw the mother as someone of faith and related. Or they viewed her as a mother, or as half of a loving marriage, or as a cancer patient, and related.

Wouldn’t it be grand if people were more compassionate in other instances as well? Yes, people questioned the decision to keep the baby. But what you didn’t hear was the sort of condemnation that befalls other women who, like her, have a lot of children, mounting hospital bills and a husband who isn’t able to provide.

Nick DeKlyen is out of work.

He’d reportedly quit work during all of this distress to be available to his family, also completely understandable.

People read these kinds of stories with different needs and agendas. Some want miracles.

Some want hope. And, in their lesser moments, some want to validate their beliefs on such matters as abortion, the proper place of faith in public policy and the right way to have a family.

But if we read and hear these stories, putting aside our egodriven need to be right, we recognize simply what they are: incredibly difficult decisions that families ultimately have to make alone, using their own understanding of what is right.

And it’s not for any of us to pass judgment.

Maine South takes the first step to repeating as Class 8A state champs with a 58-7 win over Evanston

The defending champions are still defending.

Maine South’s football team defeated Evanston 58-7 in the opening round of the Class 8A playoffs last Friday night at Wilson Field.

The Hawks had a lot of help from senior quarterback John O’Sullivan and wide receiver Luke Hinkamp as the Hawks’ offense got to a great strong lead in the first half.

Senior running back Fotis Kokosioulis took his athletic performance to another level by scoring three touchdowns to seal another big victory for the reigning champs.

“Our main key was to come out hard.” Kokosioulis said. “Evanston had a good team, but we wanted to give them no hope which was a major key for us.”

Maine South has maintained a total of 242 yards in rushing, and

258 in passing at the end of their first playoff matchup.

The Hawks’ defense has continued to improve once more with the help of senior cornerback Bobby Inserra’s versatile athleticism and picking up a 19-yard offensive touchdown pass.

“I think he played a good game overall,” his father, Hawks head coach Dave said. “He made a great catch on the end zone and tackled well.”

The Central Suburban South division champs have won their eighth straight game of this season; Maine South head coach Dave Inserra hopes to give his team a strong and intense mentality.

“The only competition we’re really focusing on is ourselves.”

Inserra said. “We can’t worry about anybody else, and we have to concentrate on how to get better every day in practice and during gametime.”

Niles West defeats Maine East for title

PALATINE — A season ago, Niles West advanced to the IHSA state final four - but did so as an underdog.

This season, the Wolves have been a team with a target on their backs, however that did not stop them from taking their first step to their goal with a 25-, 25- win over Maine East in the championship match of the Fremd Regional in Palatine.

“A lot of people thought we were going to rebuild this year, but we had our stud Natalia (Pehar) coming back,” said Niles West coach Stacy Roth. “We had Nicole (Zelazko) back as a senior and we added a freshman who plays all around as a freshman [Elianna Scalero]and you don’t see that normally - and I can go on and on about the girls we had coming up that don’t have the state experience, but they are very talented players.”

At times, Pehar took control of the match for the Wolves in the face of chants of ‘over rated’ from the Maine East student section.

“She didn’t let that get to her,”

Roth said. “She executed. Her kill ratio was awesome, her execution was great, she is a gamer and she wants to go downstate again. She is a competitor.”

That focus is what Roth said has been the key this season for the Wolves (26-6).

“We try to keep them relaxed because when we can keep them relaxed, that is when they can play,” Roth said. “When they tense up or when they start thinking about all that outside sutff, we are not a good team. Last year we were the hunters, this year we are being hunted and we tell them not to worry about that and just play your game.

“There are so many factors that go into it. We have amazing junior high coaches that really care and are passionate about preparing these girls and all the club work the girls are doing in the offseason and the summer camps and just their attitudes. These girls have such great attitudes. They work hard, they want it and they saw what we did last year and they think, why not this year?”

Notre Dame falls to Minooka

MINOOKA — Just when it looked like a Jake Loebbaka interception would seal the deal for Minooka in the opening round of the IHSA Class 8A playoffs - something crazy happened - and no one in either set of stands were surprised.

In a game that saw more oddities than either team had experienced all season - Minooka escaped with a 22-19 overtime win over Niles Notre Dame to advance to the second round.

After Loebbaka’s pick, Minooka failed to convert a first down and an errant snap on the punt resulted in a Notre Dame fumble recovery.

With no timeouts and the help of some Minooka penalties, the Dons scored with 7.1 seconds left in regulation when Luke Schutt found Ray Neylon from 4-yards out to cut the Indian lead to 16-14.

On the 2-point conversion Neylon caught a pass from running back Ty Gavin to knot the game at 16-16.

In the extra frame, Notre Dame got the ball first and settled for a

field goal after Jack Kropke made one of his team-best nine tackles to keep Notre Dame out of the end zone.

“We have a saying - hold the rope,” Kropke said. “That means you are there for your brother and you don’t let him down no matter what. If I am hanging off the side of a cliff and only hanging by a rope, I know my brothers will hold it.

“Every day in practice we are just trying to get better. We have really come together as a team and you could really see it tonight.”

On Minooka’s first play of its overtime period, sophomore Connor Etzkorn turned the corner and tallied his second touchdown of the game to give the Indians the win.

It was Minooka’s first postseason win since 2010.

“This was huge for not just the team, but for the community and the fans that come out and support us,” Kropke said. “It was a great win and I am glad it was here at home.”

Minooka opened the scoring with 2 minutes, 59 seconds remaining in the first quarter when Etzkorn tallied his first score of the game from seven yards out.

A Ty Gavin score with 3:44 to play in the second quarter got Notre Dame on the board, but a missed point after kept the Dons trailing by one.

That score held until the final play of the third quarter, when, as the buzzer sounded, Notre Dame grabbed the lead and momentum with a safety as they tackled the Minooka runner in the end zone.

The Indians, however, would not be outdone and tallied a safety of their own when Loebbaka blocked a Notre Dame punt through the end zone.

“We knew it was there,” he said. “The center kept his head down and I knew I could get right through it. That was the turning point for us. They are a good team and they found a way to come back and both teams fought adversity.”

Minooka would take a 16-8 lead when Emani Johnson scored from three yards out and thought it was sealed away on Loebbaka’s late interception.

Bears linebacker Acho talks to local athletes

If someone in Plainfield didn’t know better they would think the Chicago Bears had a bye week this week.

That is because just a day before the Bears were leaving for New Orleans in preperation of an Oct. 29 tilt with the Saints, veteran outside linebacker Sam Acho took time to come to Plainfield Central and speak with athletes as part of a program sponsored

by Powerade.

He didn’t just make an appearance. Acho addressed studentathletes about sports and life and then took time to sign autographs, talke photos and answer an array of questions.

“I am actively involved and one thing I love to do is talk to students and encourage them.

As this was getting set up, I heard about the opportunity and I jumped aboard,” Acho said about coming to Plainfield to speak. “I was telling my wife it is kind of far away, but she said is awesome and said if I had a

chance to do it, then go for it.

I love being able to encourage people. It is a gift of mine and I just love being able to do it.”

Acho told the football players in the audience that their story - one of four winless seasons and an 0-39 record and then falling just one win shy of a playoff berth this seaosn - resonated with him.

He related stories of his own high school days, when after earning a scholarship to the University of Texas, how one of his team captains was in disbelief - believing Acho’s ability wasn’t deserving of the scholarship.

“Just because people are on your side, does not mean they are in your corner,” he told the students.

Even in his professional career, Acho understands rough seasons.

In his seven years in the league, he has only played on a wining team twice and made the

playoffs once - in 2014 ith the 11-5 Arizona Cardinals - only to lose in the wild card game.

“I can relate to being 0-39,” he said. “There was a time that we were 10-26 in my time in Chicago. You have to block out the noise. It is like if you have a ship - it is the water that gets in the ship that sinks it. It is not what is inside, but it is something that is outside. So, that is a reminder, don’t let outside noise sink your ship. The thing people might understand now is - don’t get lost in the sauce.

“Sometimes your losses are your biggest lessons and it makes the wins that much sweeter.”

He told the student-athletes not to let what they hear in the hallways or on social media affect what they do.

“You try and block it out,” he said. “I even watch ESPN sometimes or the NFL Network and I am waiting for the Bears high-

lights and they don’t show them - whether we win or lose - and even if we win, they are showing the highlights of the bad plays.

I am tired of hearing about the bad news Bears, we are the good news Bears and we need to start delivering some good news.”

Acho said that good news has come as of late with the Bears winning two in a row heading into New Orleans - but that did not surprise him.

“The thing people haven’t seen is that we have been playing well for three years,” Acho said of the Bears’ defense. “If you turn the film on, you will see that ever since Vic (Fangio) got here as defensive coordinator, we have had three good years of film. We haven’t had the turnovers people were looking for, now we are starting to reap the benefits of the hard work we have put in. I am not surprised that we are playing, this is what we expect of ourselves.”

“As tough as it is to lose, we have to recognize what we did,” Bohn said.

While Maine East loses several seniors from this year’s team, there are several player coming back that grew during this season.

“The younger players learned a ton from the experience they got this season as well as from some of the senior girls and I am hoping that continues over to next season. We do have a lot of talent coming up and I am optimistic about the future for Maine East.”

Notre Dame’s junior who averaged nearly 130 yards per game during the regular season to 47 yards on 18 carries.

“Our defense has been great all year and I can’t say enough about them,” McCombs said.

Hennessey knows that posting a 7-2 record in the East Suburban Catholic Conference this season is nothing to take lightly.

“It was a great season for the kids. To go 7-2 in our conference is a helluva accomplishment.

Our coaching staff did a great job

“That is what the state playoffs are all about. They are a good team and a class operation. We played some pretty good football and this was a tough game to accept. It is tough to accept some of

those plays and things that happened, but we have a great group of kids and they are walking out of here with their heads high. We didn’t get the score we needed in the overtime. You need to get a touchdown there - a field goal is never going to be enough.”

When you should quit the day job I always tell people to first get to a point where their side hustle is generating almost as much money as their day job

DEAR DAVE, I make about $25,000 a year in my day job, but I have side jobs as a personal trainer and a DJ. I’ll make about $10,000 this year as a trainer, and $25,000 to $30,000 working events as a DJ. I’ve almost got all my debts paid off, and I love both of my side jobs. I was wondering how to tell when I’m ready to leave my day job and concentrate on personal training and my DJ work.

STEVE DEAR STEVE, I always tell people to first get to a point where their side hustle is generating almost as much money as their day job. I want the boat pulled as close to the dock as you

can get it, so that when you make the jump from the dock to the boat you don’t hit the water.

In your case, I would want the $10,000 you earn from personal training to look more like $20,000.

When you reach that level, combined with what you’re making as a DJ, it would create a pretty safe situation for you to quit your day job.

Maybe you could cheat a little on the personal trainer money, because you’re making as much or more as a DJ as you are in your day job. Otherwise, you’re giving up $25,000 for $10,000 and only hoping the personal training gig will grow. That’s not a good idea. I’d like

JAKE DEAR JAKE, A bank is owned by stockhold-

ers. When the bank makes a profit – and they should make a profit – the stockholders, who are owners of the company, get that profit.

It can be dispersed in the form of dividends, or the value of their stock is increased. A credit union is run more like a cooperative. Technically speaking, it’s operated not for profit, and the owners are the credit union members, who are also customers.

As a customer of a credit union, whatever you pay into the credit union – the “profit” – is returned to the members in the form of increased services or actual dispersements. Sometimes, you actually get a check from the credit union.

A lot of banks don’t like credit unions, and say they have an unfair advantage because of their non-profit status. This really isn’t true. Credit unions, with whatever

“profits” are made, put that money right back into creating cheaper checking accounts, better interest rates on loans, or higher interest rates on savings.

A bank could do the same thing, if it were willing to make less profit.

So, there’s no disadvantage. They’re just trying to keep stockholders happy and sell stuff to customers.

But really, that all means nothing if you don’t get good service from the organization!

Gala honors long-time SJB parishioners Event is scheduled for Saturday, November 4, at 6 p.m. in the Rev. Thomas P. May Ministry Center The Make A Difference Gala 2017, which benefits St. John Brebeuf (SJB) School, will honor three long-time SJB parishioners.

They are Daniel E. Kosiba, Sandie Beierwaltes and Jill Schmidt.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, November 4, at 6 p.m. in the Rev. Thomas P. May Ministry Center, 8305 N. Harlem Ave., Niles.

Tickets at $80 per person are available at the St. John Brebeuf School Office or at www.sjbschool.org/ gala until November 1.

Dan Kosiba, who will receive the 2017 Sheila Harrington Award, has given his time and devotion as a coach, coordinator and director of the SJB Athletics Program to tens of thousands of SJB students over the last 57 years. Coming to SJB as a student in sixth grade when his family moved to Niles, Dan convinced his father to start the school’s first basketball team in 1962-63 at SJB. While a student at Notre Dame High School for Boys, Dan continued to contribute to the sports program at SJB. The SJB athletic program is widely recognized as one of the most respected programs in the Archdiocese of Chicago.

The SJB Jaguars have been Arch-

diocesan Champions three times in basketball, seven times in baseball, one time in football, two times in girls’ softball, two times in boys’ softball, one time in cross country, one time in track and field and one time in girls’ basketball. “These were proud achievements for our SJB athletes during a time when the Archdiocese of Chicago was the largest Archdiocese in the World,” said Kosiba. With more than 80 percent of students enrolled in intramural as well as interscholastic sports, the most successful part of the program was the participation level, according to Kosiba, who coached most of the teams during the early years.

Also planned for this year are the first annual Parish Apostle Awards.

Recipients of the awards are Sandie Beierwaltes, a teacher at SJB School, and Jill Schmidt, a religious education instructor for the parish.

Sandie Beierwaltes has been part of the St. John Brebeuf community her entire life. Baptized in the gym before the church was built, she she knew she wanted to be a teacher by the time she was in second grade. When she was in eighth grade she knew she was going to teach second grade

While still in college, she sent out only one resume—to SJB—and was hired before she graduated. Except for one year when she taught first grade, Beierwaltes has lived out her dream of teaching second grade for 30 years. She also provides service as a Eucharistic Minister, on the board of the Youth Ministry, a member of the Women’s Club, and in Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts.

Jill Schmidt has taught fourthgrade religious education at Saint John Brebeuf for the past 25 years.

According to Schmidt, she has had the privilege of working with religious education directors from Sister Donna to Mac Karaban, learn-

ing from all of them throughout the years.

She appreciates the deep bond with her fellow volunteers—especially her husband, Tom Peske, who fills in for the fourth-grade class when she is traveling for her work with the public relations firm she owns.

“All the award recipients routinely go above and beyond what is expected of them,” said SJB School Principal Dr. Mary Maloney. “Dan collaborates with our parent Athletic Board to facilitate a worldclass program that develops the whole athlete. Sandie is the teacher you want your child to have. Her students develop a strong founda-

tion of academic skills and faith formation. And Jill’s service is a priceless gift to our entire parish community.”
