Resident wants sanctuary village On Jan. 27, Americans in SolidarityChicago sent letter to Mayor DiMaria

The day President Donald Trump signed an executive order suspending, either temporarily or indefinitely, admittance of non-citizens from seven majority-Muslim countries, a Chicago area group is looking to protect undocumented immigrants who were already there.

On Jan. 27, Americans in Solidarity-Chicago, a group headed by Morton Grove resident Jonathan Lahn, sent out a letter to the Mayor Dan DiMaria and members of the village’s Board of Trustees urging officials to adopt an ordinance that would make Morton Grove a “sanctuary” village. If adopted, village employees, including law enforcement officials, wouldn’t de-

tain residents solely based on their immigration. AISC is looking to advance similar ordinances in other suburbs around Chicago to create what it describes as a “safety belt.”

As of Feb. 1, the village hasn’t responded to Lahn’s letter. He told the Bugle that he was willing to give them another week to respond. If the board doesn’t react at all, the group would look at ways to ramp up the public pressure and compel it to action.

The last three decades have seen the village’s population become increasingly racially and ethnically diverse. The 2010 census indicated that it’s population increased by 3.6 percent compared to the 2000 population, with 66.2 percent of residents identifying as white, 1.2 percent as African American, 28 percent Asian, and 2.7 percent of

the residents identified as more than one racial category.

According to the 2015 U.S. Census American Community Survey estimates based on reported ancestry, the village is home to 467 Arabs, 119 of whom are Iraqi, 24 are Lebanese, 82 are Syrian and 24 are Egyptian. It’s also home to 137 Iranians, 34 Afghanis and 456 Assyrians – an ethnic group that traditionally lived in portions of modern-day Turkey, Syria, Iran and Iraq.

The 2015 community survey estimates that Morton Grove is home to 1,392 people who identify as Hispanic. 1,029 of them are Mexican, 143 are Puerto Rican and 63 are Cuban.

The survey estimates that 1,539 of Morton Grove residents are noncitizens, but it doesn’t break that category down by status, so it’s not clear how many of them are permanent residents, visa holders or hold some other status.

In his first full week in office,

President Donald Trump signed two executive orders affecting immigrants. The Jan. 25 order required the federal government to suspend grants to “sanctuary cities,” municipalities where law enforcement doesn’t ask residents about immigration status and doesn’t cooperate with federal immigration status investigations.

The Jan. 27 executive order blocked all citizens of Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Iran, Somalia, Libya and Yemen for 90 days, even if they were permanent residents, held dual citizenships or were previously issued visas. Admittance of Syrian refugees was suspended indefinitely.

The program affected all those who were already in transit at the time the executive order was issued.

While the ban on permanent residents has since been lifted, other issues remain, and the order still faces multiple legal challenges.

The AISC letter was sent before the second order was issued. In

it, Lahn, a life-long Morton Grove resident and a litigation attorney with Chicago-based Kirkland & Ellis LLP law firm, urged the village trustees to adopt an ordinance he prepared. As he explained, it was modeled after “sanctuary city” ordinances, such as the one that has been in place in Chicago since the 1980s. Adopting it, Lahn argued, would be constant with Morton Grove values.

“Today we are witnessing a repugnant surge in anti-immigrant sentiment, often motivated by racial, ethnic and religious-based animus towards particular groups viewed by some as less American than others,” he wrote. “And that sentiment is, unfortunately, taking shape in laws and policy directives that seek to divide our communities. Pizza exhibit draws long lines to library Home Run Inn provides free pizza for opening of Niles Library exhibit

Half an hour before the official, Feb. 3 grand opening of the Niles Public Library’s new I Love Pizza exhibit, the line was already forming.

The reason was simple. To mark the opening, Home Run Inn, a Woodridge-based pizzeria chain and frozen pizza maker, provided free pizzas for the first 200 people to walk through the door. The library advertised that in advance, drawing a crowd that kept growing over the next 30 minutes. By the time the ribbon was cut, the line got so large that it snaked through the magazine stacks, The library officials hope that the turnout will translate into contin-

ued interest. The exhibit is on the library’s third floor, at the Franklin Gallery area, until March 31. The library is also holding several events dealing with various pizza-related topics, and a pizza-themed art contest for students in grades 5-12 will run until the end of February.

The exhibit was a brainchild of Kendall Bruns. He said he was interested in pizza since he was a young child. His family usually ate home-cooked meals, so every time his mother ordered pizza was a major event.

“As I got older, I traveled more,” Bruns recalled. “I noticed pizzas are different in different places, and I wondered why.”

He started looking at the list of best pizzas in the country and traveling to check them out. He would up collecting menus, which lead

to collecting other pizza-related items, such as boxes and merchandise. His experience working in a pizzeria fueled his interest further.

“People asked if I get sick of it, and I never did,” Bruns said.

After graduating from the Art Academy of Cincinnati, he would up doing advertising and display design, including displays for museums. In 2015, he decided to combine his skills and his passion, launching the U.S. Pizza Museum.

Originally, the museum was entirely online. In 2016, he started doing pop-up exhibits at various venues – which is how it came to the attention of the Niles Library staff.

Sasha Vasilic, the library’s Public Relations and Marketing Supervisor said that he and Emily Mendoza, the library’s marketing assistant, came across the pop-up displays separately. They were already thinking about doing an exhibit in the spring of 2017. In 2016, the library put an exhibit about his-

tory of candy making in Chicago, and they wanted to do something similar this year.

“During winter time, people tend to stay indoors,” Vasilic said.

“We think spring is a good time to go out.”

While the candy exhibit opened in March, they decided to do an exhibit in February this time around to coincide with the “Love Your Library” month.

“We figured we’d do a twist on it as ‘I love pizza,’” Vasilic said. “[And] we are extending it into March because it’s such an amazing exhibit.”

The two officials wound up approaching Bruns. As he explained during the opening ceremony, putting the exhibit at the library made a lot of sense.

“I was expecting to bring pizza [exhibit] to the library because libraries are great community gathering places,” Bruns said. “And the history of Chicago pizza is the history of your community. As you eat

[pizza], think about where it comes from, its history.”

Vasilic said that the library already had a relationship with Home Run Inn, which previously supplied pizza for events such as the annual Library Night Out. The fact that the company has been around since 1923, and thus part of the history the exhibit would be featuring, didn’t hurt.

“I figured that our friends at Home Run Inn would be interested,” Vasilic said.

As Vasilic explained, the exhibit represented just as small portion of about 600 items in Bruns collection – but the picture it paints is extensive. The display boards delve into the history of pizza, touching on its origins, the history of pizzerias in Chicago, how the deep dish pizza was developed and the various types of pizzas found throughout United States. Turn laundry piles into smiles Everyone wears clothes, so the whole family should do their share Do mountains of dirty laundry make your winter days turn gloomy no matter the weather? Does your dog think those piles of unwashed sheets and towels are his personal bed? No matter how big or small your laundry piles are, here are some tips to help you quickly turn those piles into smiles.

KEEP SUPPLIES NEARBY Pre-wash treatment, detergent, fabric softener, bleach, etc. should be within easy reach. Store them on a shelf over the washer, in a bin on top of the dryer, in a nearby cabinet, or on a storage cart next to the washer or dryer. Consider having a spot for empty hangers, a hanging rod, a drying rack (I use one that attaches to the wall) and a wastebasket (for tossing dryer lint).

GET THE FAMILY TO HELP Have a hamper in each bedroom, and possibly each bathroom, to make it convenient for family members to deposit their dirty clothes. Consider using a lidless hamper, since opening a lid is an extra step that may prevent dirty clothes from getting where they belong.

Make family members responsible for emptying pockets and turning socks right-side out. Your family can also help empty the dryer (even a 5 year-old can

DEVELOP A LAUNDRY ROUTINE One option is to do a load every day or so, as needed. You might choose Monday for whites, Tuesday for bedding, etc. You might want to wash a load overnight and then toss the clothes into the dryer first thing in the morning while you’re getting dressed. You might prefer to do it in one marathon session, devoting a day to doing all the laundry.

No matter what your preference, just be sure you have a laundry routine that you can maintain.

USE LABELED BINS FOR SORTING You can use separate laundry baskets for each category, hang separate laundry bags on hooks, or purchase a laundry sorter that has a number of separate compartments. Label the containers with the appropriate categories, such as whites, darks, towels, delicates etc. Another option is to sort loads according to family member. Either way, family members should be responsible for making sure that their dirty clothes hamper gets emptied into the proper sorting bin by laundry day.

PUT CLEAN CLOTHES PUT AWAY The job of laundry isn’t finished until the clothes are put away. Everyone should be responsible for putting away their own clothes within a predetermined amount of time, e.g., once a week. When clothes have an assigned place to go (e.g., undies in this drawer, pajamas in that drawer, t-shirts on a shelf in closet), putting them away should go fairly quickly.

When everyone who wears clothes in your household pitches in, you can have a simple routine for getting laundry done and clothes put away on a regular basis.

USE A SEPARATE “CLEAN CLOTHES” LAUNDRY BASKET FOR EACH HOUSEHOLD MEMBER Label the baskets and place folded clean clothes into the appropriate baskets as you empty the dryer. Items that aren’t affected by wrinkling (socks, undies) can be placed into a single basket for other family members to sort. Everyone can help fold towels as well.

In a speech during the opening ceremony, library director Susan Lempke said that the exhibit reflects something universal. Most people like pizza, and most people have their own opinion about which pizza is the best.

As with last year’s exhibit, the library officially launched the exhibit with a ribbon-cutting.

Vasilic estimated that about 175 people showed up. He said that, while he didn’t want to make any assumptions

going in, he wasn’t surprised that the promise of free pizza brought in crowds.

Over the next two months, the library will hold several events to tie in with the exhibit. Bruns will give a presentation on a history of pizza on Feb. 9, at 7 p.m.

A pizza dough making workshop will be held on Feb. 18, at 11 a.m., and kids ages 4 and up will be able to take part in pizza-themed math games on Feb. 22, at 7 p.m.

As he saw it, every museum or tourist attraction should have a spot where visitors are encouraged to take pictures.

Battery Eshaq Salaqa, 42, of Niles, was charged with domestic battery on Jan. 8.

DUI Andrew J. Castillo, 28, of Glenview, was charged Jan. 9 with driving under the influence after he was reportedly involved in a crash in the 9700 block of North Greenwood Avenue. According to police, Castillo’s car was seen traveling without headlights, missing its front bumper and dragging what appeared to be a gate.

The officer stopped the car and noted that both air bags had deployed, police said. Castillo

was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge after complaining of neck and back pain. Castillo is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 9.

Daniel Staufenbiel, 29, of Chicago, was charged Jan. 8 with driving under the influence after police reportedly found Staufenbiel passed out behind the wheel of his car, which was parked and running on the 7000 block of Oakton Court.

Forgery Michael Jones, 25, of Burnham, was charged Jan. 6 with forgery, credit card fraud, and possession of an altered driver’s license after police said Jones attempted to open a membership at a retailer in the 7300 block of Melvina Avenue using an altered identification card.

According to police, while Jones was in custody, three fraudulent Illinois state ID cards were found in his possession, as well as 13 credit cards. There was also a warrant for his arrest

out of Will County for driving on a suspended license, police said.

Property Damage Javed K. Noor, 36, of Chicago, was charged Jan. 8 with criminal damage to property after he was accused of forcing open his girlfriend’s apartment door in the 8100 block of Dempster Street, causing the door frame to break, police said.

An air rifle appeared to have been used to damage multiple glass blocks in a garage window on the 7300 block of Carol Street between Jan. 9 and Jan. 11, police said.

Theft Erskine Williams, 20, of Oak Lawn; and Reginald Jackson, also of Oak Lawn, were each charged Jan. 6 with retail theft on the 8200 block of Golf Road.

Patricia Korbel, 58, of unincorporated Maine Township, was charged Jan. 7 with retail theft and criminal trespass after allegedly stealing two bags from

a store in the 200 block of Golf Mill Center. Police said Korbel had been previously warned not to return to the store after an alleged shoplifting incident in 2014.

Vivian Bethshlimon, 27, of Niles, was charged Jan. 8 with retail theft on the 200 block of Golf Mill Center.

A 1996 Honda was reported stolen Jan. 11 from a parking lot in the 8600 block of Milwaukee Avenue, police said. The car was later found by Chicago police parked in the 5900 block of Barnard.

A package was reported stolen Jan. 12 from outside a home in the 8100 block of Wisner Street.

The theft is believed to have occurred Dec. 12, police said.

Warrant Nenab Givargis, 20, of Skokie, was taken into custody on a bond forfeiture warrant for a DUI charge on Jan. 5. While Givargis was in police custody, marijuana was found inside the

pocket of his jacket and Givargis was ticketed, police said.

MORTON GROVE Violation of order of protection Kevin M. Murphy, 55, of Morton Grove, was arrested Jan. 18 on the 6800 block of Beckwith for violating an active order of protection.

Alejandro Magdaleno, 43, of Morton Grove, was in violation of an order of protection Jan. 24 and fled before police arrived to the 6200 block of Dempster Street. After being caught during an attempt to flee, suspect was further charged with leaving the scene of an accident and driving on a suspended driver’s license.

Local teams ready themselves for the IHSA postseason grind

The IHSA playoffs for girls Class 3A and 4A basketball is right around the corner and the Voyager Media teams are ready.

Most of the Voyager Media schools all feed into the East Aurora Sectional complex this season, coming out of four regionals, three of them hosted by local schools.

Benet Academy holds the No. 1 seed in the sectional and hosts its own regional.

The Redwings open play at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14 against the winner of No. 16 Neuqua Valley and No. 17 East Aurora.

“Benet is pleased to receive the No. 1 seed in Aurora East Sectional,” said Benet coach Joe Kilbride.

“As in years past, we feel that our strength of schedule has us well prepared for the state tourney. We know that we have a very tough road ahead with quality opponents in the early rounds but hope to en-

joy the ride and see how far we can get.”

The regional championship game on Feb. 16 could have another local team as No. 8 Plainfield North takes on No. 9 Lemont at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 14.

“We are looking forward to having a good regional round,” said Plainfield North coach Reggie Lemon. “This is the best seeding in Plainfield North girls basketball so we need to take advantage of it. Our goal is to get back to the regional championship game from two years ago.”

In the Oswego Regional, Minooka holds the No. 3 seed in the sectional and will open play Wed. Feb. 15 at 6 p.m. against the winner of No. 14 Metea Valley and No. 18 Oswego.

The No. 6 seed in the complex is Bolingbrook, who will play at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 15 against the winner of No. 11 Joliet West and No. 22 Waubonsie Valley.

Notre Dame Principal joins IHSA board The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Board of Directors met at its regularly scheduled meeting at the IHSA office in Bloomington

on Monday, January 9, 2017, where the Board voted to appoint Notre Dame College Prep (Niles) Principal Dan Tully to a vacant at-large

seat on the IHSA Board of Directors.

Tully fills the at-large seat that is reserved for a principal from a

non-boundaried school, which was vacated following the resignation of Fenwick High School principal Peter Groom from the Board.

Tully served on the IHSA Legislative Commission in 2013 and 2014.

“It is a great honor to be appointed to fill the remainder of this term on the IHSA Board of Directors,” said Tully. “I am pleased to be able to serve the students of Illinois, as well as to represent the non-boundaried schools of our state. Participation in activities and athletics brings out the best in our young people and allows schools to develop the whole body, mind, and heart of each young person. I look forward to working with the board, the IHSA staff, and all the people who help coordinate Illinois’ outstanding programs for student participation, activities, and athletics.”

Tully attended Notre Dame College Prep for high school and returned to his alma mater as a social studies teacher in 2000. In 2001, he shifted to Director of Student Activities, a position he held until 2004 when he became the Assistant Principal. He ascended to the principal role in 2007. During his time at Notre Dame, Tully has served as student council moderator, pep club moderator, and assistant baseball coach. He earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Notre Dame, as well as a Master’s Degree from Loyola University of Chicago.

“It is a pleasure to welcome Dan to the IHSA Board of Directors,” said IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson. “We know Dan believes in the mission of the IHSA and his experience on the IHSA Legislative Commission will help to quickly assimilate him to his duties on the Board.”

Dons win own regional; several advance

All local teams competed at the Class 4A Notre Dame Regional and advanced wrestlers to next week’s sectional tournament.

As a team, the host Dons won going away with 236.02 points, beating Evanston (187.03).

Maine South was third with 171.04, followed by Taft (89.05), Niles West (76.56), Lane (64.07), Niles North (56.58), Maine East (33.09) and Von Steuben (0.0).

Notre Dame advanced all but one wrestler to the individual sectional next week at Conant.

The Dons were led by a trio of champions, as Andy Poniatowski won at 126 pounds, Josh Barzowski took first at 160 and Nick Prozanski earned a title at 182.

“We have had a goal all year to win the school’s first girls basketball regional title,” said Plainfield East coach Tony Waznonis. “When we saw the sectional postings we knew that would be tough, but anything worthwhile is not an easy path. Being the 7 seed is not where we wanted to be, but we know no matter what seed we received, we would have to earn a regional title against a great team.”

The regional final is set for 7 p.m.

Bacteria from the mouth is able to enter the bloodstream when bleeding gums are present. That bacteria can stick to platelets and subsequently form blood clots. This interrupts the flow of blood to the heart and may trigger a heart attack.

ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE Various health ailments, including poor oral health, have been linked to a greater risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. In 2010, after reviewing 20 years’ worth of data, researchers from New York University concluded that there is a link between gum inflammation and Alzheimer’s disease.

Follow-up studies from researchers at the University of Central Lancashire in the United Kingdom compared brain samples from 10 living patients with Alzheimer’s to samples from 10 people who did not have the disease. Data indicated that a bacterium — Porphyromonas gingivalis — was present in the Alzheimer’s brain samples but not in the samples from the brains of people who did not have Alzheimer’s. P. gingivalis is usually associated with chronic gum disease. As a result of the study, experts think that the bacteria can move via nerves in the roots of teeth that connect directly with the brain or through bleeding gums.

These health conditions are just a sampling of the relationship between oral health and overall health. Additional connections also have been made and continue to be studied.

Debit, credit cards same thing to machines Machines don’t recognize the difference, whether you type in a credit card number or a debit card number DEAR DAVE, I take classes online at a public university that is several hours from my home. I tried to pay for my classes the other day, and my Visa debit card was not accepted.

I got a message saying credit cards and cash were the only payment options. How can I take care of this without wasting an entire

day driving to campus to pay with cash?

AMY DEAR AMY, Don’t worry, there’s no need for you to drive all the way to campus and back just to pay for your classes. You can run a debit card like it’s a credit card, and they will accept it. The machines don’t recognize

the difference, whether you type in a credit card number or a debit card number.

Just select “credit” when it asks for payment method. It’s just like when you step up to pay for something at the store and they ask the old credit or debit question. You say credit, so you don’t have to enter your PIN (personal identification number), and it all stays in the Visa system.

You’re just using it wrong, and that’s why you’re having trouble.

Just remember this in the future, and best of luck with your classes!

The ordinance would require police officers not to detain residents simply because of issues related to their immigration status, nor would they help Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

However, the ordinance specifies that this wouldn’t apply if the residents in question are wanted for some other reason, such as alleged crimes.

In his letter, Lahn noted that he was a clerk for federal judge Martin C. Ashman, who, as an attorney, defended the since-struck Morton Grove ban on handguns. It was the first ban of its kind in United States, and Lahn argued that adopting the sanctuary village ordinance would be consistent with that legacy.

“Then and now, Morton Grove was a community that was ahead of the curve in embracing novel laws for the well-being of its people,” he wrote.

AISC is a fairly new organization, officially launching in Jan. 17. Lahn said that he wanted to have an organization that would focus on multiple causes, such as women’s rights, LGBTQ rights and compatting anti-Muslim prejudices. “AISC’s perspective is to say, now more than any time in recent memory, we all face a common threat,” Lahn said. “Rather than approaching this as a bunch of disparate groups making a temporary alliance, let’s be a group that is formed at the intersection of all these diverse groups that exists just for the purpose of being an alliance, and crafting a platform that is organic from the grassroots up and includes all these diverse voices.”

He also wanted a group that would focus on how those issues affect people on the local level instead of fighting abstract issue.

Lahn said that, as of Feb. 1, AISC’s has 120 members who are active online. As he readily admitted, online particpation doesn’t necessarily translate into real-world activism, but he said he’s optimistic.

“I have been fortunate to know many experienced activists and I have been recruiting them into the group quite successfully,” Lahn said.

He said that, while he was disappointment that the village hasn’t responded to his letter, he realized that they might meed time to discuss the issue. But if nothing happens by the time the next village board meeting, which is scheduled for Feb 13, rolls around, Lahn said he would look into trying to increase pressure.

“If they refuse to do anything about it - which seems like a needlessly silly approach - then we will have to consider protests and PRrelated efforts to draw attention

to the issue,” he said. “One would hope that a town with as many immigrants and descendants of immigrants as Morton Grove wouldn’t choose to have that fight rather than address the issue on the merits.”

Morton Grove Village Administrator Ralph Czerwinski told the Bugle that the village response is still being discussed.

“At this point, [the proposal] is under review,” he said. “We will dissect it and determine the best [course of action] for the village’s future.”

While the AISC letter doesn’t address the Jan. 27 executive order, Lahn said he doesn’t think much of it either. He was among the lawyers who volunteered to help travelers from the affected countries who were detained upon landing at O’Hare International Airport.

Lahn siad he had no doubt that it wouldn’t survive the legal challenges.

“I believe the executive order is absolutely unconstitutional. It is deeply, deeply flawed and presents due process, equal protection and First Amendment issues by differentiating the treatment of individual immigrants and asylum seekers based on their religion,” he said.

“Furthermore, the implementation - which appears to have started without consulting the actual agencies that were implementing the rule - was a travesty and led to people, such as legal permanent residents (aka Green Card holders) being detained who never should have been. “
