Holiday Inn Express opens for business Lakhani Hospitality-owned hotel hosts Grand Opening Feb. 11

A little over a year-and-a-half after the ground-breaking, the new Niles Holiday Inn Express is open for business.

Located near where Waukegan Road splits off from Milwaukee Avenue, the hotel was built by Lakhani Hospitality, a family-owned company that already owns Holiday Inn locations in Skokie, Oak Brook and near O’Hare Airport. The new building is larger, with more rooms, more amenities and a number of features geared toward business travelers. It replaces the Travelers Inn motel.

The hotel quietly opened on Feb. 1 with the official grand opening on Feb. 11. Company officials touted the new hotel’s amenities, and its ability to meet guests’ evolving expectations and needs. Niles officials said it was a welcome addition to the village and a great asset for village businesses.

Lakhani Hospitality is a familyowned company founded by Mansoorali Lakhani, who immigrated to United States from Pakistan. He and his brothers bought a gas station and they bought four more gas stations since then. In 2004, they got into the hospitality business, buying the Skokie Holiday Inn. In 2008, Lakhani Hospitality acquired Travelers Inn, which was a Niles fixture for decades. During the grand opening, Karim Lakhani, Mansoorali’s son and the company’s assistant director of operations, recalled that they always wanted to do something more with the site, but there wasn’t much room to expand.

The company eventually bought the lot immediately to the north, site of the former Ozzie’s Bar and Grill restaurant.

As 2015 rolled around the company announced the plan to demolish both buildings and build a new, 100-room hotel across the two lots. Travelers Inn was officially closed on Feb. 28, 2015, and demolition began two months later. A groundbreaking for new Holiday

Inn Express was April 30.

As previously reported by the Bugle, Travelers Inn was one of the few affordable housing options in Niles. At the time it closed, the Niles Department of Family Service was assisting about 20-25 people. According to Department Director Tony Hollenback the residents who needed to find housing were referred to Open Communities. The Winnetka-based affordable housing advocacy group helped about 75 percent of them find an affordable place to live.

Like other Holiday Inn Express brand hotels, the new building is orientated toward business travelers. It has three meeting spaces, two of which can be combined into one. The spaces come with what the hotel handout describes as “modern lighting and audio visual equipment.” All guestrooms have a built-in safe, refrigerator and microwave. The hotel parking lot can accommodate both cars and buses and has charging stations for electric vehicles Other amenities are more uni-

versal: a 24-hour gym, a small indoor heated pool and complimentary high speed wi-fi.

In his opening ceremony speech, Karim Lakhani said that he was “terrified” of being put in charge of spearheading the hotel’s construction but he was pleased with how it turned out.

His sister and the company’s Chief Operating Officer Sheila Lakhani Gilani, thanked the Village of Niles staff and the Lakhani Hospitality staff for making the hotel possible.

Niles Mayor Andrew Przybylo touted Holiday Inn Express as an improvement over Travelers Inn, and a welcome addition to Niles.

“We [had] a 54-room, not so great hotel,” he said. “This is so much better. I’m grateful to have this here, and I’m very grateful for the Lakhani family, for their vision.”

Katie Schneider, the executive director of the Niles Chamber of Commerce and Industry, told the Bugle that the hotel will help local businesses, because they would be able to host clients there. It would help funeral homes, since it would give them a place near two Niles cemeteries they can recommend to out-of-towners coming in for funerals. And, she said, it would help the village in other ways.

“Now people can go to our restaurants and shops, and see how great Niles is,” Schneider said.

The opening speeches also touched on politics. Karim Lakhani said that, as Muslims, he and his family have been alarmed by Trump’s attempts to ban citizens of seven majority-Muslim countries from entering the United States.

The fact that Pakistan wasn’t one of the countries in question didn’t make them any less alarmed, he said.

“In spite of our best efforts, we constantly have to prove we’re peaceful,” he said. “The diversity makes us strong, and that’s what’s great here in Niles. This property is a product of vision and hard work of Muslims from Pakistan.”

Panel addresses Muslim stereotypes in media Panel one of several events tied into Skokie-based Northlight Theater’s newest play, “Faceless”

As many residents were watching the Grammy Awards, a discussion about the different aspect of popular culture was unfolding in Morton Grove’s Muslim Educational Center.

The Muslims on Stage and Screen panel was Feb. 12, at 6 p.m. Playwrights Rohina Malik and Selina Fellinger joined Loyola University theology professor and chaplain Omer Mozaffar to discuss how Muslims are depicted in the media, and how those depictions contribute to real-life attitudes toward Muslims. The panelists agree that, while there have been some progress, there is a still a long way to go – and getting more Muslims into art was key.

The panel was just one of several events tied into the Skokie-based Northlight Theater’s newest play, “Faceless.” Written by Fellinger, it deals with 18-year-old, Caucasian teenager Susie Glenn who was arrested for trying to join the selfproclaimed Islamic State terrorist group, and Claire Fathi, a Muslim attorney who was brought it to prosecute her. The play opened Jan. 26, and runs through March 4.

As Anjum Ali, a member of the center’s Interfaith and Outreach Committee, told the Bugle that, as Northlight prepared to stage the play, it wanted to do some workshops. Among other things, it wanted to get the local Muslim communities involved, and the Muslim Educational Center seemed like a natural choice.

School alumna, performer and a playwright best known for writing “Unveiled,” a 2010 play dealing with five Muslim women’s response to September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Mozaffar has lectured about depictions of Muslims in the media for years and still consults for the film industry. Terri Birch Arain, founder of Muslim Arts Collaborative, served as the panel moderator, and occasionally added insights of her own.

Fellinger explained that “Faceless: was inspired by a real life April 2014 incident involving then18year-old Shannon Conley, a nurse’s aid from Arvada, Colorado.

“I happened to come upon an article from a Colorado newspaper about a white girl from the suburbs who was arrested for trying to join ISIS,” she recalled. “She was arrested on a tarmac, [before] she boarded a plain to meet her ISIS suitor in Turkey. It turns out it’s happening all over the place and all over this country.”

At the time, Fellinger was studying play writing at the Northwestern University. A year later, she got an opportunity to write a play as part of an independent study and collaborated with a Chicago area theater company to do it. Fellinger pitched two ideas – one being comedy she jokingly described as a “terrorist play.” BJ Jones, Northlight’s artistic director, went with what eventually became “Faceless.”

Fellinger said she soon realized that a Muslim character had to be a part of it.

“If I was going to write about [a Conley-like character], I knew I had to have a [character] who had

a healthy relationship with Islam,” she said.

Mozaffar gave a rundown of the history of depictions of Arabs and Muslims in general in film. Even as certain details changed, he said, they were rarely depicted positively, and certain stereotypes persisted, such as Muslim women submitting to abusive Muslim men.

“But if you ask Muslim men, I don’t think anyone would say that’s true,” Mozaffar said, earning a chuckle from some people in the audience.

Muslims tend to be depicted as foreigners and “savages,” with a few “token” pious Muslims.

“All of us can agree – there needs to be improvement in depiction of Muslims,” Mozaffar said.

Malik said that she sees a direct connection between those negative depictions of Muslims and real-live hate crimes.

“When you look at [perpetrators of] hate crimes, you find that they had negative stereotypes about the group of people and negative feel-

ings,” she said.

Malik said that she wants to see more “normal” depictions of Muslims – and she tries to help that along with her plays. She said that she would like to see the Muslim communities do more to encourage their kids to go into arts.

“I think it’s very important to tell your own story, and in order to do that, we need more [artists],” Malik said. “As a community, we need to find venues, we need to find opportunities, we need to find young people who have the talent and nurture it.’

The panelists then answered the audience questions.

One attendee, a Northwestern University film professor, said his students want to know what they could do to improve the depiction of Muslims. Mozaffar replied that modern technology makes filmmaking cheaper than ever, so there are more opportunities for ambitious filmmakers to leave their mark.

“If you have a good film with a

compelling story, it will catch Hollywood’s eye,” he said. “You just have to be prolific.”

Another attendee, a Muslim, asked about the role of Wahhabism, a conservative Muslim sect, in encouraging terrorism.

Mozaffar said that, as he saw it, Wahhabi were fundamentalists, similar to what Puritans were to Christianity.

“We are talking about people who abandon traditional and say ‘his word means what I think it means,’” he said.

Mozaffar used the New Testament passage from Matthew 10:34, where Jesus said. “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.” Taken on its own, he said, the passage seems to encourage violence against non-believers, but the subsequent verses make it clear that it’s meant figuratively, to describe conflicts within families caused by believers’ conversation.

When asked what non-Muslim writers can do to avoid Muslim stereotypes, Mal said that listening is the key.

“All of my plays come from something someone said, and they thought as unimportant,” she said.

“I’d tell [them] to listen, to travel and to meet people.”

Fellinger said she had no background in Islam when she started writing the play, but she did research and interviewed a number of Muslim individuals. The key, she said, is to remember that, while people may have different cultural backgrounds, the basic human emotions and aspirations are the same across the board.

“I kind of don’t buy into ‘write what you know,’ because I think it’s doing a discredit to us” she said.

“We all felt the same emotions. I think it’s just constantly getting

Don’t rely on pharmacies to catch drug interactions Pharmacists’ reputations as patient guardians may be unwarranted When you fill a prescription at your local pharmacy, you assume the medicine you receive is safe and won’t interact badly with other drugs you’re taking.

That’s not an unreasonable assumption, considering that pharmacists enjoy a positive reputation among the public. A recent Gallup poll found that pharmacists are among the most trusted professionals ranking second only to nurses.

But pharmacists’ reputations as patient guardians may be unwarranted.

The results of an investigation published by the Chicago Tribune before Christmas showed that patients may be in danger after all.

The paper sent reporters to more than 200 pharmacies in the Chicago area, ranging from small neighborhood drug stores to those operated by large national chains.

Fifty-two percent of the pharmacies they visited failed to warn patients that a pair of drugs, if taken together, could result in serious potential harm, even death.

The Tribune called its findings “striking evidence of an industry-wide failure that places millions of consumers at risk.”

No doubt the poor practices uncovered in Chicago are common in other places. Twenty years earlier, in 1996, U.S. News & World Report published a lengthy study that found as the Tribune did that pharmacists failed to warn their patients of dangerous interactions.

Back then, the magazine sent reporters to pharmacies in seven cities and found that “well over half failed to warn consumers when presented with prescriptions for drugs, that, when taken separately are safe but when taken together can be risky at best and at worst deadly.”

What was striking to me was that in 20 years not much has changed in the pharmacy business, and unaware patients are still at risk.

In 1996 a spokesperson for the American Pharmaceutical Association

You can, of course, ask your doctor. But even they may not know - as I found out ...” told U.S. News reporters about ongoing financial turmoil in the retail drug business.

Chains had begun to crowd out independents, HMOs were cutting their reimbursements, and pharmacists were under greater stress.

A spokesman for the American Pharmaceutical Association said the profession was “looking at a re-engineering of the whole profession.”

Fast forward to now. Was there really a re-engineering given what the Tribune found in its investigation last year?

Since findings from the two studies are similar, I’m skeptical.

A vice president of CVS pharmacy told the Tribune, “There is a very high sense of urgency to pursue this issue and get to the root cause.” My question: Why wasn’t there such urgency 20 years ago?

There still appears to be little protection for patients who have no idea whether a particular combination of drugs they take will kill them.

While many pharmacies do have computer programs that alert them when a patient is being prescribed drugs that may interact badly, John Norton, director of public relations for the National Community Pharmacists Association, told me pharmacists

sometimes fail to heed the warnings.

They may be suffering from what he called “alert fatigue.” In other words pharmacists get so many alerts that they fail to comprehend them all, and something slips through. As the Tribune found, those slips are far too common.

Where does this leave patients?

You should still ask the pharmacist to check your records to make sure a new drug doesn’t interact badly with others you take. You can, of course, ask your doctor. But even they may not know as I found out.

My doctor continued to prescribe Cipro for traveler’s diarrhea for years even though it reduces the effectiveness of another medication I’ve been taking for decades.

I learned about this only recently at an urgent care clinic where a doctor refused to prescribe Cipro because of the possible interaction.

Nor can you always rely on those leaflets put in the bags the pharmacist gives you.

The information you get may be supplied by outside vendors, says Larry Sasich, who is the co-founder of Patient Drug News and co-authored the 2005 best selling book, “Worst Pills, Best Pills” with Dr. Sidney Wolfe who headed Public Citizen’s Health Research Group for many years.

Sasich says the best information about when a drug should not be used can be found on a drug’s FDAapproved professional product label on the DailyMed website (https:// dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/) sponsored by the National Library of Medicine.

At the end of each label is the “Medication Guide” the FDA requires for some 200 drugs – many heavily advertised.

The agency requires those labels if it believes information is necessary to prevent serious adverse side effects and when patients need to know about any known and serious side effects.

You can also ask the pharmacist for the professional product label. I asked mine for Cipro’s label. He handed me a tiny, tightly wrapped packet, and said, “You’re not supposed to see this unless you ask.”

My advice: Ask! What problems have you or a family member had with drug interactions?

Theft • A man allegedly failed to pay a $23.75 cab fare Jan. 21. A car driver told police that the man attempted to pay the fare with two credit cards that were declined, and then left the cab to get money from his wife, but never returned.

Leaving the scene of an accident Tailor D. Maine South’s Pistorius shares state balance beam title

PALATINE - Maine South sophomore Caleigh Pistorius has been attending the girls gymnastics state meet for as long as she can remember.

For just as long, she’s wanted to take home a souvenir.

“She has been coming here since she was a baby,” her mother, Jennifer, said. “When she was little she always wanted to get a T-shirt or something.

“I said, ‘no, you’re going to get a state finals shirt when you earn it.’

So last year she got the shirt.”

Now Pistorius has something even better.

Pistorius became the first female state champion in program history – and just the second female gymnast to win a medal – when she tied for first on balance beam with New Trier freshman Maeve Murdock on Saturday at Palatine.

Pistorius’ score of 9.425 was an improvement on Friday’s preliminary round score of 9.2, which was good for eighth place.

The top 10 finishers on Friday advance to the event finals, where the top six win medals.

“It was really special,” Pistorius said. “I can’t even comprehend how it happened.

“I’m just so excited. I don’t know how to explain it. I was just trying to stay focused.”

Pistorius also captured medals on vault and floor exercise. She was seventh on floor with a 9.475

and ninth on vault at 9.425.

Ironically, vault was considered to be Pistorius’ best shot at a title.

She was ranked second in the preliminaries, tallying 9.75 after landing her difficult layout Yurchenko so cleanly that she opted not to try a second vault.

“That’s really special to me,” Pistorius said Friday. “It’s always been my goal. You get your picture on the wall at school. It will be great because everyone at school is so supportive.”

Maine South isn’t the only school that supports Pistorius.

Jennifer Pistorius is in her 26th year coaching at New Trier and got to witness both of her daughter’s vaults.

“She had a beautiful vault in warm-ups and I said, ‘just do it like you did in warm-ups,’” coach Pistorius said Friday. “She’s been practicing this for years.”

Pistorius has competed in plenty of meets where her mom was coaching, but this one is the most memorable yet.

“I’m really excited because I’ve been here since I was younger with my mom,” Pistorius said. “So that’s always been my dream and it’s so special that I get to do it.

“She’s really supportive. She wants me to do really good. She probably wants me to do good more than I do.”

As a freshman, Pistorius qualified for state on vault and floor exercise and finished 12th on vault, missing the finals by .025. But she SEE TOP PAGE 10

Maine S. wins regional

Maine South coach Mark Smith and everyone who looked at the roster knew at the beginning of the year the Hawks would be a young team this season.

What a lot of the people outside of the locker room didn’t know was just how talented this young group could be and that while the future may look bright – the present was not going to get by without a fight.

That was proven when Maine South, the No. 7 seed in the Niles West Sectional, defeated No. 2 Glenbrook South 44-39 to claim the Glenbrook North Regional.

“We have been making a lot of deposits and we are starting to see some of those withdraws come out,” Smith said. “I know a lot of people are looking at our team and thinking about next year, but that is a real disservice to the three seniors we have that are working real hard. It is a fun time. We feel that we scout real well and practice real well and can matchup with a lot of teams.”

While the team was young at the beginning of the year, they are a much different team after a full season under their belts.

“This team is completely different than when we started. We execute everything and we know what to do. We are pushing the ball in transition and we really get

after it on the defensive end. We have come a long way since the beginning of the year,” said sophomore Nicole Scales. “Even teams that we have played early in the season, we are different now and we are coming for them.”

The Hawks faced No. 2 Maine South Tuesday in the sectional semifinal and hope to move one step closer to their first trip to the state finals since 2011.

“Those sophomores have a full season under their belt,” Smith said. “When we went downstate in 2011, we were 14-19 the year before with freshmen and sophomores and then we went downstate with three sophomores playing a lot. Anything can happen in late February and early March.”

BASKETBALL

Bandits take a step in the right direction under Palicki

When Jon Palicki took over the Resurrection girls basketball team, he came in with a new, defensive, attitude for the Bandits.

“The identity prior to me taking over was a very offensive identity and came in and installed a defensive identity,” Palicki said. “So, it took the summer and some of the fall league, but they really started to get it (at the end of the season).

“At the end of the season, we were definitely playing better than when we started. When I took over, there had been and interim head coach after the last guy resigned and I give the girls a lot of credit, they always work hard and do the best they can and they never shy away from any situation. They are great team kids.”

Palicki said the leadership on the team helped him get through his first season.

“I was fortunate coming into this season that we have eight seniors and two juniors that were on the team last year as sophomores,” he said.

That junior class will come back next season along with a talented cast of young players to help move

The schedule the Bandits played this season also helps the Class 3A school.

“We have a great class coming up. We return five juniors and the JV team was 21-7 and there were five freshmen on the team and they are coming up hard,” Palicki said.

“We played 14 Class 4A teams this year. We played in the Niles North tournament with all 4A teams, we played in the Dundee-Crown tournament with not only all 4A teams, but elite 4A teams. We play a heck

of a schedule.”

Resurrection, the No. 9 seed in the Class 3A Johnsburg Sectional, won its opener 52-34 over No. 8 Woodstock before being eliminated with a 52-30 loss to No. 1 seed Antioch.

In Class 4A, Niles West, the No. 11 seed in its own sectional complex, lost 57-37 to No. 5 New Trier in the regional semifinal.

No. 15 Maine East defeated No. 19 Von Steuben 60-31 in the quarterfinal and then fell 72-32 to No. 3 Maine West.

Barzowski enjoys best showing at state

CHAMPAIGN - For the first three years of his career, Notre Dame’s Josh Barzowski qualified for the IHSA Class 3A wrestling tournament twice, going a combined 1-4 in those two appearances.

This season, as a senior, Barzowski made his third trip to the State Farm Center on the campus of the University of Illinois and posted a 2-2 mark and advanced to the third day for the first time in his career.

Barzowski (39-6) opened the 160-pound tournament with a 4-3 decision over Michial Foy of Crete-Monee, before losing to eventual state runner up Nate Jimenez of Marmion Academy 2-1 in the first tie breaker.

Barzowski then bounced back and defeated Juan Quiroz of Huntley 8-3 to advance to the final day of the tournament.

“[Getting to the final day] was big,” Barzowski said. “The main thing for me was calming my mental aspect. Physically I was fine – just a little tired – but mentally, I had to get ready for another tough opponent.”

In his opening match of Saturday, he fell to eventual fifth-place finisher Brian Holloway of Oak Park-River Forest 8-5.

“It was awesome getting to the final day, because last year I was a match short,” Barzowski said.

“A medal [would have been huge] but I am proud of my career.”

Maine South sent a trio of wrestlers to the state meet, but none wrestled more than two matches.

At 152, Eugene Lee fell in the opening round to Zach Reese of Lockport 7-1, while Jon Halvorsen (170) was pinned in the first round by eventual state champion David Riojas of Mt. Carmel in 1 minute, 54 seconds. He then injury defaulted to Oswego’s

Disappointing end for Resurrection

CHERRY VALLEY – It was a disappointing end to the season for the veteran Resurrection bowling team last weekend at Cherry Bowl.

The Bandits were looking to finish the first day in the top 12 to advance to finals, but a rough afternoon led them to a 24th place finish with a 4,967 total.

Despite the team disappointment, the Bandits were represented at finals by senior Lauren Gawlinski, who shot a 2,213 to finish in 60th place.

“I’m really thankful I got to bowl another day because I’m a senior and it is my last time here at state,” Gawlinski said. “I would have liked to advance with my team though.”

Gawlinski and the Bandits had a tough time adjusting to the new and more difficult lane conditions this year.

“The lanes definitely broke down in the afternoon,” Gawlinksi said. “It was definitely different than when I was here last year. It was a struggle a little bit to adjust, but I think I was able to eventually figure it out.”

However, Gawlinski was able to

“It feels like the best one I’ve done,” Pistorius said Friday. “I just try to run as fast as I can. It sounds kind of dumb, but you have to run really fast.”

One has to be really good to earn bragging rights in the Pistorius household. Her older brother, Jack, played on Maine South’s state championship football team last fall.

“It’s kind of a running joke at home,” Jennifer Pistorius said.

“She’s set a lot of records at Maine South. He jokes with her, ‘hey, I’ve got a state medal.’”

Now Caleigh has a state championship and she got it on the most difficult apparatus. Her skills include a flip-flop layout step-out tumbling pass and a flip-flop to a

fight through it and advance to finals after shooting a 1,170 on the opening day.

“The key was definitely grinding and making spares to keep your game up,” Gawlinski said. “That’s the only thing when you’re not hitting the pocket because of the lane conditions. You have to get your spares. Everyone was struggling too and it was reassuring to know we weren’t the only ones.”

Overall, Gawlinski was happy to finish out her career on the final day of state.

“It is about having fun since it was my last day,” Gawlinski said.

“My teammates were here cheering me on. I took it one frame at a time and have a fun last tournament. The key was jus making it here.”

Peyton LaValley (1,081), Sarah Beck (940) and Meredith Nowotarski (940) also finished off their careers at state.

Maine South senior Victoria Odarczenko missed out on qualifying for finals after doing so last year, finishing in 84th place with a 1,094 series.

She shot a 510 in the morning but came back in the afternoon with a 584 to get near the cut line.

“In warm-ups I was doing too much because I didn’t want to (overdo it),” she said. “Everyone was telling me to stay as calm as I was during warm-ups. When I was on the beam I tried not to think too much and just focused.”

Pistorius, who finished 12th in the all-around with a 37.175, was happy to be cheered on by all of her teammates, three of whom competed on Friday. Freshman Collette Ross was 14th on uneven bars (9.2), sophomore Cristina DeFilippis was 38th on vault (8.8) and junior Jessica Saul placed 31st on uneven bars (8.375). All three were making their state meet debuts.

“We had a lot of potential but sectionals was a rough meet for us and we had some troubles staying strong,” Pistorius said. “Everyone on our team is so happy that we’re here. We have four individuals.

We’ve never made that many before so that was really great for us.”

Free admission Free Tax Assistance AARP Foundation Tax-Aide helps low and moderate income taxpayers, with special attention to those 60 and older.

Volunteers are trained to assist in filing tax forms and certain schedules, including the Form 1040. Taxpayers with complex returns, or in instances where the counselor feels they do

not have adequate training or knowledge, will be advised to seek paid tax assistance.

Under the Volunteer Protection Act, AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers must stay in the scope of the program and do those returns for which they have received training.

Beginning January 30, appointments can be scheduled for individuals with simple returns by calling the Tax Hot Line, 847-588-8440, between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Appointments begin in midFebruary and run through Wednesday, April 12.

Snow Shoveling Assistance If you are a Senior and/or a disabled Niles resident and in need of assistance, please contact the Niles Senior Center at (847) 588-8420 to register or volunteer for this program. By registering for the program, we will do our best to match you up with an available volunteer within your neighborhood.

Volunteers will be asked to remove snow from public walkways and front sidewalks.

After the conclusion of a 3” or greater snowfall, volunteers will visit their assigned home within 48 hours to remove snow.
