Film by local filmmakers premieres at Pickwick

On the evening of Feb. 10, Pickwick Theater was abuzz with activity – all because of one film.

It wasn’t a blockbuster, or even the special screening of a classic film, that brought people from all over Chicagoland to Park Ridge’s iconic movie theater.

It was “Jim Shoe,” an independent drama that was co-created by Park Ridge resident David Hoelscher.

While the film wasn’t fully set in Park Ridge, several businesses and organizations were used as shooting locations.

Pete Sutton, writer and coproducer of the film, told the Bugle that he and Hoelscher had high hopes for “Jim Shoe.” They are looking to get the film screened at the Tribeca Film Festival, and they are currently in the process of negotiating with potential distributors.

“Jim Shoe” is a drama set during the height of the Great Recession.

When one of the partners in a Chicago law firm dies unexpectedly, four associate attorneys get a chance to fill the spot. But the firm’s founder insists on an unusual test

of character. Each candidate has to do pro bono work for six months, helping the less fortunate. Whoever does the best job will become partner.

The film centers on one of the candidates – whose name gives the movie its title – as he tries to mentor Dijon Brown, a teen from the low-income North Lawndale neighborhood. While the plot takes up most of the screen time, filmmakers also spend some time with the three other associates. One worked as an advocate for a couple struggling with drug addiction, another opened a food pantry and the third served as a caregiver for an Alzheimer’s patient.

As Hoelscher explained before the screening began, he and Sutton became friends while they worked at the Chicago Board of Options Exchange. Sutton wound up moving to Los Angeles to pursue a screenwriting career, but the two stayed in touch.

In 2007, the Chicago province of the Society of the Divine Word, a Catholic missionary congregation, commissioned him to write what Hoelscher described as “a feel good movie” to promote its organization.

Because of the recession, the organization pulled its funding.

But the two friends thought that movie based around the order’s philosophy, which centered around providing spiritual, social and educational services to the indigenous people, immigrants, refugees and “the disenfranchised” had potential.

In 2014, they decided that it was now or never. Sutton said that what they saw during the recession inspired the plot.

“The only ones who basically did fine were the attorneys,” he said. “I thought – wouldn’t it be interesting to do a story about attorneys doing something good and exploring the motivations behind it?”

According to Sutton, the filming took a total of 19 days spread throughout September and midOctober, with some shooting done a few months later on Memorial Day. He and Hoelscher co-produced the film – a first time for both of them. Sutton handled writing and directing, while Hoelscher handled much of the location scouting.

When a member of the audience asked why they chose to have Dijon be from Lawndale, Sutton said that while a south side neighborhood would’ve been the obvious choice, many parts of the west side had similar issues. Besides, there was a

personal connection.

“My mom actually grew up in that area,” he said.

Sutton said that he actually found that neighborhood had many beautiful areas, specifically citing Douglas Park and the boulevards.

He thought that it had lots of promise.

“I think, with a little bit of time and a bit of money, we can get to that point,” he said.

The film also featured many locations in downtown and Near North sections of Chicago, as well as North Shore and northwestern suburbs. Old Orchard Mall is featured prominently, as the Summit of Uptown retirement community.

According to a press release sent to the Bugle, Marc Dennison, who served as the community’s Executive Director, saw the film as an opportunity to enrich the lives of seniors who lived there. Filming lasted about five days.

“It wasn’t disruptive, but it certainly created a buzz that kept people, especially our residents talking,” said Dennison.

Hoelscher put his knowledge of his home town to use to find several other Park Ridge filming locations for smaller scenes. That included Mac’s Restaurant and the Ryan-

Parke Funeral Home.

The movie was screened in Pickwick’s main screening room, and it was advertised prominently on the main marquee. Before the screening began, Hoelscher thanked the crew, the cast, those who helped them secure filming locations and everyone who came to the premiere.

“Please enjoy it,” he said. “I apologized to my mom many, many times for all the swear words in there. I wanted to make it realistic.”

Hoelscher also emphasized that he wanted honest feedback.

“It’s okay if it’s not your cup of tea movie,” he said. “Constructive criticism would be great.”

Hoelscher said that, even the movie doesn’t find wider distribution, he would be happy that it made it as far as it did.

“My goal was tonight – to have my friends and family and [locals] to come and see it, so my goal is compete,” he said.

Sutton also thanked everyone in the audience for coming, adding that he would appreciate it if audience members stay through the credits.

That way, they would be able to see all the people who were involved in making the movie possible.

While Sutton praised all actors, he singled out Denzell Armon, the 19-year-old actor who played

Cook County Circuit Court Judge Franklin Valderrama threw out a lawsuit against Sportsman’s Club, a proposed Niles gun shop and firing range.

The lawsuit was the second attempt by Skokie-based People For a Safer Society to block the opening of the gun shop.

The gun control advocacy group argued that Sportsman’s Club would be located too close to several area schools, putting local youth and other residents in danger.

It sought to not only revoke Sportsman’s Club special-use permit, but ban any gun shops from occupying that particular site.

In his Feb. 9 decision, Valderrama ruled that the plaintiffs lacked standing to file the lawsuit and that they filed the lawsuit based on the wrong legal standard.

However, the group’s attorney, Tony Hind, told reporters that the group wasn’t giving up just yet.

Hind said they planned to file an appeal within the next 30 days and expressed hope that appellate court judges would be more receptive to his legal arguments.

In May 2014, a group of business owners operating as 6143 Howard Partners applied for a special use permit to open a gun shop at 6143 W. Howard St., in Niles industrial district.

Over the next few weeks, a number of Niles, Skokie and Lincolnwood residents raised concerns that the shop would be too close to Niles West High School, Niles Central High School and New Hope Academy – a private school for students struggling with emotional challenges.

People for a Safer Society, which formed in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook school shootings, were among the most vocal opponents of the proposal.

The Niles Board of Trustees ultimately approved the special-use

permit. In October 2014, the group sued the village of Niles, arguing that the process by which it granted the permit was unconstitutional.

Village attorneys filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit, arguing that the group filed the lawsuit on “as applied” basis but should have filed on “facial” basis. The group, they argued, couldn’t file on “as applied” basis because none of the plaintiffs were directly affected by the gun shop’s opening. The facial basis was a much tougher standard to prove, because the plaintiffs would have to show that the village didn’t have the legal authority to grant a special-use permit to any gun shop.

In June 2015, Valderrama ruled in favor of the village of Niles. But because he dismissed the lawsuit without prejudice, People for a Safer Society had an opportunity to file an amended version of the lawsuit – which it did a month later.

The second lawsuit made similar arguments as the first, claiming that a gun shop would endanger the nearby schools, as well as the employees of Lifeway Foods -- the Morton Grove-based dairy product maker whose facilities are located a few blocks north of the site. The lawsuit also included Howard Partners as a defendant.

The attorneys for the village and the gun shop subsequently filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit, arguing that People for a Safer Society still lacked standing to bring the lawsuit and that the potential harm it described was purely hypothetical.

On Feb. 9, Valderrama granted the motion to dismiss the second lawsuit. He said that, under existing legal precedent, plaintiffs had to own the property involved in the lawsuit or any of the adjoining properties in order to have standing.

The judge specifically cited the 1988 Landmark Preservation Council

v. City of Chicago case, where the Illinois Supreme Court found that the Landmark Preservation Council of Illinois didn’t have the standing to challenge the Chicago City Council’s decision to remove landmark status from the since-demolished McCarthy building. The reason reason for that ruling was that none of the plaintiffs owned property anywhere near the building.

Valderrama also said the new lawsuit didn’t address the argument that it shouldn’t be filed on as applied basis, which gave him additional reason to dismiss the second lawsuit on the same grounds as the first.

This time around, Valderrama dismissed the lawsuit with prejudice.

Tisha Ashcroft, a People for a Safer Society member who lives in Niles, didn’t mince words.

“It’s basically disgusting that we have this kind of business in our village,” she said. “It’s supposed to be a No. 1 place to raise kids.”

Denyse Stoneback, head of People For a Safer Society, said she was disappointed and asked reporters to direct their questions to Hind.

The attorney said one of the challenges of the case was that it was different from typical zoningrelated lawsuits.

“In a typical zoning case, the municipality denies relief to property owners,”said Hind. “This one is more nuanced because the property owner had the application granted, and [residents] are the parties who were aggrieved.”

Hind said that, while he respected Valderrama’s legal expertise, he didn’t agree with the ruling. He believed that the judges who will consider the appeal will see things differently.

“We believe that, once we have a panel of three appellate court judges, we stand a chance,” Hind added.

New village tagline will be ‘Incredibly Close and Amazingly Open’

The Morton Grove Community Relations Commission is putting together a village-wide photography contest.

The initiative is designed to promote the new village tagline -“Incredibly Close and Amazingly Open.”

Residents would be invited to submit photos that they feel best reflect the tagline. There are some restrictions – the commission members agreed that they didn’t want submissions to feature nudity.

But otherwise, they wanted to give the contestants as much leeway as possible and encourage them to interpret the theme any way they see fit.

The process is currently in the early stages.

The commission put together a sub-committee to hammer out the rules and requirements.

The sub-committee will meet later this month, and the full commission will discuss it during the next meeting, which has been scheduled for March 8 at 6:30 p.m.

The idea for the contest was originally suggested by Morton Grove Village Manager Ralph Czerwinski, who asked the commission to figure out how it could be implemented.

It was introduced during the commission’s Feb. 9 meeting.

Village attorney Terry Liston, who served as a staff liaison to the commission, said that it would be up to the members to establish the structure and establish the criteria. Because the village commissions are advisory, the board technically has the final say over what the rules are, but

Liston said that, unless the village trustees see any “red flags,” they were comfortable with going with whatever the commission comes up with.

One example of the “red flag” was allowing nudity – which all the members of the commission agreed wouldn’t be a good idea.

Chairperson Arcelia Pimentel said that the contest would be open to adults and teens from local high schools.

“We are going to put it out there and invite [high] schools to have their students submit photographs,” she said. “We want to get as much participation as possible.”

The commission currently aims to start the contest after spring break.

Liston said that Czerwinski suggested picking six winners, and to print their photos and put them on display in some public space.

Pimentel said that she hoped if the first contest is successful, it could become a regular event.

There are still many things that the commission hasn’t finalized.

During the meeting, members wondered about what format the photos would be in, what size they would be printed out in and where exactly they would be displayed.

Commission member Bob Burkhart said that it was important to ensure that the legal permissions are sorted out before the village asks contestants to submit anything.

After a brief discussion, the commission agreed that members Vinu Varughese and Dean Engel would work with Liston to develop the rules and report back during the next meeting.

Being able to live or work in Park Ridge has long been considered something positive. That’s true unless you work for our police department.

Substandard working conditions have too long been allowed to exist to the point of potentially harming the health of police officers and staff. The dangerous health and safety conditions are well documented by a recent public

However, I am not proud of the way the city is treating its workers—namely those who work in city hall and especially in the police department.

She will be leaving our Morton Grove Public Library running smoothly under the leadership of qualified department

A few years ago, the city council pledged to fund corrective actions in three annual phases. Phase One was done, but then the council changed and the pledge was put on hold. Promises were later made for funding when the old public works site was to be sold.

That did sell for about $1.5 million and later the house next to the fire station at Cumberland and Devon was also sold.

Why can’t funds from those sales be used to correct deplorable conditions at our police station?

I would not work in such conditions, so why do we ask those who serve and protect us every day to do so? The council is entering the next budget review process and needs to stand up to its responsibilities to correct the facilities.

Concerned citizens should voice their opinion to their alderman and plan to attend the March 10 budget hearing to speak out.

Working in Park Ridge should never be at the expense of one’s health. Let’s right this wrong now.

Even though Park Ridge ranks among the best cities in Illinois in which to live, some of our public facilities don’t compare well with our neighboring communities. The most egregious example is our police station where old pipes, leaking cooling equipment, poor air circulation and other facility issues create mold and even run the risk of producing the deadly legionnaires’ disease. This is a very scary thought and possible area for future litigations against the city should that happen.

Let’s restore the pride in our town by seriously addressing the health and safety conditions in our police department and return it to a place of safe and healthy working conditions.

Come and voice your own concerns on March 10 when the council takes up the police budget. Or, at least, tell your Alderman how you feel. We can no longer ignore the situation.

In all sports, there is no time better to perform your best than at the end of the season and that is exactly what the Maine South girls gymnastics team did.

The Hawks scored 141.325 points at the Schaumburg Sectional and placed fourth.

“This is the meet to do it at,” said Maine South coach Tessa Robinson. “We had really strong floor, vault and bars. I don’t think we could have done anything else on those events.

On beam, we had to count a few falls. It was tough, we had a longer wait before that event, but beam is tricky like that – you either hit or you don’t and it is a big difference when you don’t. I am proud of them. They put out a stronger performance than at regional.”

Junior Sara Ignoffo was thrilled with the way the team performed.

“Today’s performance is the best the team has ever had. We were all so supportive and the energy was there today,” Ignoffo said. “It is very exciting. We did so insanely strong this year and we weren’t expecting it. To think that we have most of the same girls back next year, it is awesome to think that we can be as strong or stronger next year.

“During the middle of the season, we had a lull with some injuries, but we pulled it together here and we peaked at the right time. Last week we had a bit of a rough time and that really helped us and fired us up because we didn’t want that to happen again.”

Ignoffo was Maine South’s one automatic qualifier, as she posted a score of 9.525 in vault and was the fifth and final spot in the state meet.

“I have never been so happy in my life,” she said. “I have never

As the Maine East boys basketball team nears the end of the season, it is hoping it gets back to early season form.

“When we hit shots we feel good about ourselves, but there have been games where we haven’t and we still play good defense,” said coach Dave Genis.

“We have grinded out a lot of

games against a lot of good teams.”

The Demons fell on hard times during the middle of the season, but Genis has confidence they can reclaim their early season swagger before the postseason.

“It starts in practice,” he said.

“The nice thing about these guys is they are resilient and they do forget and move on to the next game.”

WreStlIng Notre Dame is sending a trio

of wrestlers to the state final meet this weekend in the State Farm Center on the campus of the University of Illinois in Champaign.

Leading the way was Josh Barzowski (32-7) who placed second at 152 pounds, falling in the final match by a 16-5 major decision to Tulga Zuunbayan of Rolling Meadows.

Joining him will be his brother, Jake Barzowski (40-1) who placed 3rd at 138.

Micayla Paterno posted an 8.80, while Berns scored an 8.650 and Jessica Saul had an 8.275.

Berns, the lone senior of the Maine South team, was proud of how the young team performed all season.

“I thought this season was the best season because we had so much depth on the team,” she said. “Having so many great gymnasts on one team made it

more fun. Even though I was the only senior we all got along all year. We have had a few injuries here and there where we haven’t put in our best lineup, but today we had our strongest lineup and that was fun to watch. We really emphasized staying focused and confidence really helped at the end of the season. We had so many accomplishments this whole year and it really has been the most fun season.”

Fun seasons are what look to

be in line for the Hawks in the future.

“We have a lot to look forward to with only one senior on varsity who is graduating,” Robinson said. “We have a pretty even number of freshmen, sophomores and juniors on varsity now and we will see what comes in next year. Over the last few years, the team has been building its skill level little by little. We have a lot to be excited about.”

Joining the brothers at state will be Tom Simon (32-14), who was fourth at 220 after falling in the third-place match 5-3 to Mike Lawson of Glenbard West.

Also competing in the sectional, but not advancing were Andy Poniatowski (120, ) Michael LoBianco (126), Vince Spedale (145), Dino Gutierrez

(160), Tom Reneir (170), Nick Prozanski (182) and Matt Bernal (285).

While the three Dons will be competing in this weekend’s individual state finals, Notre Dame’s team season is still alive.

After winning the regional title, the Dons will compete Tuesday,

Feb. 23 at Larkin High School in Elgin against Prospect for the right to advance to the team state meet in Bloomington Feb. 27.

Furthermore, according to the most recent data available, 7.4 percent of adolescents between the ages of 12-17 were current (past 30 days) marijuana users, while 19.6 percent of young adults ages 1825 were current marijuana users.

By comparison, over 16 percent of people ages 12-17 and 35 percent of 18-25 year-olds were current marijuana users in 1979.

What about alcohol? Well, binge drinking – defined as having five or more drinks on one occasion – hit an all-time low among teens last year at under 20 percent.

That compares favorably to a rate near 40 percent for most of the 1980s.

Finally, perhaps the greatest change in drug use patterns over the past 50 years relates to cigarettes.

Many of us remember a time when smoking was allowed on airplanes, in restaurants, and for many years in college classrooms.

Now, it’s nearly impossible to find a space where smoking is not prohibited or restricted.

The cultural attitude shift away from smoking has trickled down to young people.

Last year, just 11 percent of 12th graders had smoked a cigarette in the past month, and half of those (5.5 percent of all seniors) were daily smokers. In 1976, the year when peak smoking was reported, nearly

Not trying to cause a big sensation Where do we get this information?

Actually, there are two highly reliable, long-term sources.

The first is an annual survey conducted by the University of Michigan called Monitoring the Future. The second is done by a federal agency called the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration, and it is called the National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

Each year, these groups ask thousands of young people about their drug use habits. Have you ever used this drug? Have you used it in the past 30 days? Do you use it everyday? You get the idea.

We can then analyze their findings and try to make informed guesses about drug use trends. One of the most notoriously difficult things to do in research is to show a cause and effect relationship.

If we see a change in trends, how can we account for it?

Did something happen to make a certain drug more or less appealing?

How can we explain the drop in drug use rates in virtually every category, particularly when we hear so many stories about drug problems and may even witness them firsthand?

For one thing, the data above looks at kids throughout the country, in all 50 states, and it does not describe the unique concerns

So while broad patterns suggest a promising decrease in teenage usage, we cannot say that drug use is no longer a problem. It clearly is a problem, as the CDC recently exposed the depth of the opioid overdose issue, which now accounts for as many deaths as car accidents among young adults.

Don’t try to dig what we all say What’s important is that we continue to have conversations about drug use, with parents setting clear expectations. Although we know teenagers will not always follow those guidelines, research strongly supports parental norms that disapprove of using. If we go too far in trying to use scare tactics, however, that approach only backfires because it is not genuine.

One thing is for certain – today’s teenagers are faced with as many stresses and difficult decisions as any previous generation, and they are a diverse group with enormous promise.

In the next article, I will explore the question of who should pay for social services, an issue that critically impacts the state of Illinois.

As we move toward the end of the state’s fiscal year without a budget, the question is as relevant as ever.

Chamber of Commerce trivia contest tests community awareness Chamber hopes success event will result in more trivia nights When 11 teams of Park Ridge residents gathered at the Summit of Uptown retirement community for the Chamber of Commerce Trivia contest, their awareness of the town they call home figured into winning scores.

The chamber hopes the success of the Jan. 29 event will result in more trivia nights, following the success in several prior years of similar events held at Houlihan’s and run by the Park Ridge Library staff.
