Bar honors WWII vet on his 98th birthday 50-year resident gets top-notch treatment on birthday eve BY IGOR STUDENKOV For the Bugle @BugleNewspapers nweditor@buglenewspapers.com

A hush went around the Morrison Roadhouse bar as manager Kris Ahrens had the music muted and said that they were going to bring out the cake and sing “Happy Birthday” for Wally. The regulars didn’t need to ask which “Wally.” Walter Petroske, a Niles resident for more than 50 years, has been a regular for so long that even he wasn’t sure how long it’s been. And it wasn’t long before the entire bar was singling along. Afterwards, many regulars stopped by to shake his hand, thank him for

his service, offer their personal congratulations and, in several instances, pay for his drinks. Petroske turned 98 on Feb. 10. But since that was a day when he would be celebrating with his family, they wanted to do something special for him the evening before. Every regular that spoke to the Bugle praised him as a caring, noble and quick-witted soul, and Petrsoke praised them right back. Petroske was born in Butternut, a village in northern Wisconsin. He said he joined the army in 1942, and after training at Fort Sheridan and a few other bases, he was quickly shipped out to the front. He served in 9th Armored Division. He took part in the Allied invasion of German-occupied Europe. Petroske mentioned that the fighting took him from Belgium, Luxemburg and Germany itself. He fought in the Battle of Remagen, a battle over control of the Ludendorff Bridge over river Rhine. While Nazi forces blew up

bridges as they retreated to slow Allied advance, they weren’t able to blow up this bridge, and Allies taking control of it made it much easier for troops to advance further into Germany. When asked about his experience during the battle, Petroske was fairly tight-lipped. “I was fighting Nazis, I made it out okay, I got out of it, and I’m here, I’m here to talk about it,” he said. After the war, he moved back to Wisconsin. Petroske said he moved to Niles for a job — to work as an overhead electric crane operator. His wife, Stella, passed away in 2008 at age 85 — the couple had two daughters and a son, six grandchildren and two greatgrandchilden. He lives near Morrison Roadhouse, by Chicago/Niles border, and he’s been coming to the bar with such clockwork regularity, SEE VET PAGE 3

Resident files complaint alleging fraud Resident files complaint alleging fraud by Niles Neighbors Party BY JEN SHEA For the Bugle @BugleNewspapers sweditor@buglenewspapers.com

A Niles resident has filed a complaint with the Cook County State’s Attorney alleging petition fraud by the Niles Neighbors Party, whose three candidates for village trustee are backed by Mayor Andrew Przybylo. The Voice of Niles Party, which is running against them, has also filed an affidavit which claims that Przybylo signed his name as the circulator of a petition that was circulated by someone else. Ralph Albanito’s complaint to the State’s Attorney is based on an affidavit filed by Chicago resident

Daniel Mulkerin, whose signature as circulator appears on several petition sheets submitted by the Neighbors Party. Mulkerin insists he did not circulate any petitions for the Neighbors Party or sign any circulator’s affidavit for them. The complaint comes a month after Przybylo and trustee Joe LoVerde, who is supporting the Voice of Niles Party, agreed to step down from the Niles Electoral Board over a request to remove the Neighbors Party slate from the ballot. The three-member board also includes Village Clerk Marlene Victorine. “They did not have to” step down, Niles Electoral Board at-

VET FROM PAGE 2 if regulars and staff don’t see him that day, they check on him. Ahrens said that he was glad that he was able to help organize Petroske’s birthday celebration. “I love him like a grandfather,” he said. “He’s a testament of fine men, and just…God bless his soul.”

torney Keri-Lyn Krafthefer said. “They opted to so there would be no appearance of a conflict or impropriety.” The objector in that case, also Albanito, withdrew his challenge two weeks later, leaving the Neighbors Party candidates — Melic R. Bookstein, Apostolos “Paul” Drakontaidis and Israel “Izzy” Pacheco — still on the ballot.

But Albanito’s complaint to the State’s Attorney poses a fresh challenge. It asks that the Neighbors Party slate not be printed on the official ballot. Among his objections are that the petition sheets contain names that are not registered voters at that address, that some signatures are forgeries and that some signatories are not residents of Niles. The Voice of Niles Party slate — trustees Denise McCreery and Dean Strzelecki and Craig Niedermaier — is also pointing to an affidavit filed by Niles resident Jason Trunco as evidence of a troubling pattern from the mayor and his party. Trunco alleges that the petition he signed was circulated by a Public Works Department employee, not Przybylo, who signed his name as circulator. “I’d like to understand why the

fraud was even committed,” McCreery said. “I think there’s a bigger ethical issue behind it.” Mayor Przybylo claims he’s the victim of an unprecedentedly negative campaign. “A signed affidavit means nothing if it alleged and was signed by a corrupt partisan,” he said. McCreery said she’s filing a complaint with the Ethics Board over the signature discrepancies. She said it’s important to figure out who forged Mulkerin’s signature. “My concern is, what is the bigger message about this campaign?” she said. Trustee George Alpogianis said he shares her concern and supports the Voice of Niles Party slate. “Forgery and fraud are very serious things,” he said. “And we just don’t need that here in the Village of Niles.”

The regulars offered similar glowing testimonials. Pat Krug, who was chatting with him before the cake was brought out, described Petroske as “a complete gentleman” and “a legend in this neighborhood.” “He watches out for everybody, we watch out for him,” she said. “[He is] the best man in the world. I will take care of him because,
