2018 in Cook County saw many changes and improvements, such as The Governor visiting Niles West and a program honored for making it to state. Here is a breakdown of some of the events shaped our community this past year.

Manufacturer wins 2017 Green Business Award

PolyScience, a Niles-based temperature control equipment manufacturer, won the Green Business Award The annual award is designed to recognize local businesses that follow environmentally sustainable practices. As the board packet noted, this not only reduces harmful impact on the environment, but helps reduce electric and water utility costs. Kelly Gibbons, PolyScience’s Marketing and Customer Service Manager, accepted the award on her employer’s behalf during the Dec. 12 Village of Niles Board of Trustees meeting. PolyScience was founded in 1963. It started out as an importer of German laboratory equipment. By the early 1970s, the company earned enough profit to allow it to design and manufacture its own products. Its temperature control equipment to laboratories, hospitals and manufacturers. Manufacturers use temperature control equipment to make a variety of liquid products, including motor oil, paint and shampoo. In the last decade, the company also branched out into cooking. Phillip Preston, the company’s current owner, became interested in sous vide – a technique where the food is cooked slowly in airtight plastic bags under lower-thenaverage cooking temperature. He decided to see if he could reconfigure PolyScience’s existing cooling equipment to heat the food up. Since 2007, the company has been working to become more environmentally friendly and energy-efficient. According to its Green Business Award application, in 2014, the company instituted a new Environmental Management System Policy, which set procedures for recycling of scrap materials, organic fluids, waste water and used oil, using pH to neutralize waste fluids, and reusing refrigerant. PolyScience also put more energy-efficient light bulbs in its light fixtures, improved energy efficiency in some of its equipment, made some interior lighting motion-activated to reduce energy waste and replaced cardboard packaging inserts with bio-degradable foam.

Permission to pump

The Village of Morton Grove Board of Trustees held the first of the two required readings on a resolution to grant a Special Use permit for a new water pump facility that will deliver water from Evanston to Morton Grove and Niles. During the Jan. 8 meeting, Morton Grove Village Administrator Ralph Czerwinski laid out the details of the

facility. It will be located at 7900 Nagle Avenue, on the south end of the village’s main industrial area, near the Morton Grove Public Works facility. Because the pump will include a water pipe that’s taller than what the zoning code would allow, the village boards need to approve a Special Use permit before it can actually be built. The second reading, and the final vote, is scheduled during the Jan. 22 meeting. Morton Grove and Niles are currently in the process of switching their water supplier from Chicago to Evanston. The water would be delivered through pipes that would run through Evanston and Skokie. It would start at the existing Evanston/Skokie connection near the intersection of Golf and McCormick roads, continue west along Foster Street, then travel southwest along Gross Point Road. From there, it will run through some unspecified residential areas before reaching the pumping station. The pump will be needed to get the water to the two villages. Morton Grove’s contract with Chicago expires in the end of 2018, so both the pipes and the pump station must be in place before that happens. The two villages set up the Morton Grove-Niles Water Commission in July 2017 to handle the details of the process, with Morton Grove and Niles splitting the costs 50/50. Later that year, it bought to land at Nagle Avenue and demolished the existing structure.

Governor visits Niles West

When Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner heard about Niles Township District 219’s career education program, he was so intrigued that decided to see it for himself. The Post-secondary and Career Expectations (PaCE) program aims to help students choose careers and get into either a college or a trade school. Each student can choose a “career pathway” where students take specialized classes and more general electives to help them reach their career goals. During his Jan. 22 visit to Niles West High School, Rauner got a look at Career Technical Education in Engineering, Computer Science, and Business programs. The governor said that he was impressed with what he saw; touting it as a model the rest of the state should follow. According to a presentation given to Rauner – a copy of which was provided to the Bugle as the visit concluded – the idea behind PaCE is to not only get the students into classes that would prepare them for their careers, but give them opportunity to visit businesses within the field, look at what kind of post-secondary education they would need and

what financial aid they would need. Each student starts out with a general career cluster until they narrowed it down to a more specific career path. Each school year, the students take at least one class that is specific to their career pathway. As the years go on, they are also able to choose electives that offer skills that fit that career. The district offers a total of 11 career pathways - Architecture & Construction; Arts, Audio Visual Technology, and Communication; Business, Management, & Finance; Computer Science/Information Technology; Education and Training; Manufacturing / Engineering Technology; Government, Human Services, and Law; Health Science; Hospitality, Food, Agriculture, & Natural Resources; Science Technology Engineering Math (STEM); and Transportation, Distribution, and Logistics. Rauner was particularly interested in the technical education programs. District 219 is part of the Northern Suburbs Educational Region Vocational Education (NSERVE), a career and technical education consortium. According to Mary Anne Brown, the executive assistant to the organization, it was NSERVE Executive Director Martha Eldredge Stark who got the word out to the governor.

Program honored for making it to state

Every year, high school theater programs from all over Illinois have an opportunity to apply for an opportunity to put on a play at the Illinois High School Theatre Festival. Eleven schools were chosen to put on full-length plays – and this year, that list includes Maine South High School and Niles West High School. On Feb. 19, Park Ridge City Council honored Maine South High School students for that accomplishment. IHSTF was founded in 1976 as an effort to create a statewide festival where students from schools from different parts of the state got a chance to perform in the same venue without competing with each other. The basic blueprint from the festival came from regional festivals developed by Jerry Proffit, of the since-shuttered Niles East High School and Cary Libkin of Riverside-Brookfield High School. While the festival itself isn’t competitive, students do have to compete to get in. Every year, different programs are chosen to put on full-length plays and shorter “showcase” plays. The students handle every aspect of the production. The festival also puts on an all-state play, where individual students from any school in Illinois can audition for cast and crew. A total of 350 students auditioned for this year’s production, “Big Fish,” and 109 were selected.

YEAR IN REVIEW - FIRST 6 MONTHS

A LOOK

BACK The top stories in Sports for the first six months of 2018

HEY NOW, YOU’RE AN ALL-STAR Led by a game-high 25 points from MVP Ryan Saunders from Joliet Central, the South rallied in the second half to come away with a 120-116 victory in the 10th annual Voyager Media Publications Prep Shootout Senior All-Star Game with showcases some of the areas seniors. It was the sixth straight season that the game was held at USF and this was certainly one of the most entertaining. While not quite as high scoring as the previous season’s 134122 North win, the game went down to the final minute before the South came away with the win. Miller scored 14 points in the game, which will be his last organized basketball one. A 3-sport standout, including being quarterback of the football team, he will continue his college career as a pitcher at at Western Michigan. “I’m going to miss it a lot ,” Miller said of basketball. “But I’m looking forward to an awesome baseball career at Western Michigan.” Lockport’s Deondre Cooper (4 points) and a trio of players from Minooka - twins Keegan (3 points) and Kyle (2 points) Graebner. along with Brandon Hill (11 points). Charles McKinney (19 points) led four players from Joliet West that wee

on the South team. The others were Smith (7 points) along with Derron Williams (7 points) and Darren Williams (6 points). “We were just playing and having a good time,” said Darren Williams, who will look to continue to play basketball at a junior college in Iowa. “At the end we just started playing defense and sharing the ball.” As the only senior starter for the Benet Academy girl basketball team, Tsimba Malonga knew she was capable of scoring. But after suffering a hyperextended knee and missing a few weeks in the middle of the season, she didn’t always get that opportunity. So playing in her final high school game, the University of Denver recruit showed what she is capable of. Malonga poured in all 21 of her points in the second half to easily help her North squad double up the South team 88-44 in girls game. Malonga is the second Benet player to win the MVP award. Emily Eschoo won it in 2015. The 21 points were tied with Plainfield Central’s Hennessey Handy (‘16) for the second most in the girls all-star game. Plainfield East’s Gabby Williams (‘13) holds the record with 24 points. When Malonga was notified in the final minutes that she was

close to the record, she did what many of the great players do. She passed to another player. As the game went, it hardly mattered as the North led 2813 at halftime and then scored 60 second half points to easily break the girls record for most points in a game. The previous mark was 81 points by Team Taylor - under a different format, in 2015. Joliet West’s Sarah Gersch made an impact not only on the court, but also off of it for the Tigers. That’s why basketball coach John Placher nominated her for the annual Voyager Media Award for her display of character, class and sportsmanship on and off the court. That was the Jeremy Izzo Character Award, which is named after the former Joliet Catholic Academy boys basketball coach, who passed away in 2010. Gersch was this year’s recipient and was presented the award after the game. AT HOLMES IN THE NBA The Joliet area has been one to produce a plethora of talented high school and major college basketball players. That has not, however, resulted in sending players to the professional ranks in the National Basketball Association.

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 27, 2018 | BUGLENEWSPAPERS.COM

Sure, several have found success in the professional ranks overseas, but the NBA is the pinnacle of any player’s career and few have broken through. Three years ago – as a second round draft choice of the Philadelphia 76ers – Lockport High School graduate Richaun Holmes entered into that sacred fraternity. Holmes started off on one of the worst teams in the NBA, but now the Sixers and the 24-yearold former Porter is placing his name among the Will County greats. Holmes is only the seventh player born in the Joliet area to play in the NBA and only the sixth that attended a local school. Bulbs Ehlers, the first-ever draft pick of the Boston Celtics, was born in Joliet, but attended high school at South Bend Central in South Bend, Indiana. With 156 games currently played in the NBA, Holmes is second only to Hall of Famer George Mikan as far as games played in the league for players in the Joliet area. When he was drafted, he joined Mikan, George Munroe (80 games), Roger Powell, Jr. (3 games) and fellow Lockport graduate Alando Tucker (51 games) as the only area players. Bolingbrook’s Ben Moore was

called up from the G-League and saw action in a pair of games this year for the Indiana Pacers. With a four games to one series win over the Miami Heat, Holmes became the first Jolietarea player to be part of a playoff-winning team since Mikan won the 1954 NBA title with the Minneapolis Lakers. SENT PACKING For anyone who plays college football, their ultimate dream is to hear their name called at the NFL Draft as one of the more than 250 selections by one of the 32 teams of the National Football League. That was the dream of Plainfield East graduate Tyler Lancaster — at least for 240 or so picks. Toward the end of the seventh — and final — round, Lancaster and his agent had agreed to terms with the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent. And with a Packer hat in hand, he informed those close to him of the exciting news. The only issue was that there were still teams that could select him and ruin the moment. Lancaster did not hear his name, signed, and became a Packer as he had wanted. Lancaster, the 6-foot, 3-inch, 313 pound Romeoville resident, was signed by Green Bay as a

defensive lineman, a position he played at Northwestern after converting from offensive line after high school. With that opportunity at Northwestern, he became a beast in the middle of the defensive line and was a threeyear starter. He posted 40 tackles (9.5 for loss) with two sacks as a senior. His junior year, he recorded 28 tackles (3.5 for loss) and tallied 33 tackles (5.5 for loss), 1.5 sacks and two forced fumbles as a sophomore. His senior year, he was voted by his teammates to wear jersey No.1, an honor for any Wildcat player, as it is given to the player who best represents the character of the program. While the Packers are a good fit on the field for Lancaster, the 3.5-hour drive is a good fit for his family to watch him — which a big inspiration. Family gained a new meaning for Lancaster the past year or so. Lancaster’s dad, Brad, died in January after a battle with cancer. TITLETOWN Even before his team played in the championship game of the 2018 National Junior College Athletic Association Division 3 baseball World Series, Oakton Community College coach Bill Fratto was already getting coaches from all over the coun-

try wishing the Owls good luck. That was because the Owls were facing four-time repeat national champions Tyler Junior College from Tyler, Texas and the rest of the NJCAA baseball community wanted a new champion. So, Oakton gave it to them. The Owls had to pry the title out of Tyler’s hands as the Apaches erased a three-run deficit in the ninth inning and tworun leads in the 10th and 11th before Oakton put up three in the 13th to win 14-11. It is the first title for Oakton, who won it in its first-ever appearance becomes just the second Illinois program to capture the DIII title, joining Joliet Junior College, who won in 1994, 2008, and 2012. Alexander Crinigan pitched a pair of scoreless innings to close out the game and earn the win. Tommy Gertner got the start for Oakton and went 7 1/3 innings allowing six hits, five runs, but only two earned. He struck out six and walked five. For the tournament, Gertner tossed 14 1/3 innings with 12 strikeouts and was named Tournament MVP. The Owls, the No. 4 seed in the tournament, finished the season with a school record 44-17 record.
