Board withholds sale proceeds from book sale

The Niles Public Library Board of Trustees voted 5-1 not to give Friends of the Library the money it made from selling used books.

As the library director Susan Lempke explained during the Dec. 14 meeting, the library usually handed over the money once a quarter; the money is supposed to be used to help the library. While the organization did spend money on a number of projects, it also declined to spend it on others, which rankled the majority of the trustees. They also complained that the library staff handles the book sale, but doesn’t necessarily get anything out of it.

Trustee Carolyn Drblik was the sole dissenting voice, arguing that the board shouldn’t make a deci-

sion like this without talking with the Friends first. But the rest of the board wasn’t persuaded, voting to keep the money. While the library won’t be able to spend it this fiscal year, it will be able to put in next year’s budget.

According to Lempke, Friends of the Niles Library originally launched the book sale to help raise funds for the library. The sale was held twice a year, and Friends members ran every aspect of the sale. But that changed as many members aged.

“A lot of them are quire elderly,” said Lempke. “They don’t have the capacity to do that anymore.”

As the result, the sale became ongoing, with used materials put up on the main lobby, where patrons can buy them any time. The library staff puts the donations on the shelves and handles the sales.

During the Nov. 16 board meet-

ing, trustee Barbara Nakanishi asked Lempke whether it would be possible for the library to keep the proceeds.

“We are collecting it, but now we have to hand over that money,” she said. “That doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.”

Trustee Patti Rozanski agreed.

“If it wasn’t the staff that was manning it, it might be different,” she said.

Trustee Tim Spadoni said that, if the board had any control over how the funds were spent, he wouldn’t mind handing it over, but since it doesn’t, he had reservations.

Lempke said she would look into the issue. During the Dec. 14 meeting, she told the board that, while the library traditionally turned over the funds to Friends of the Library, it isn’t actually legally required to do so. She also said that the library has collected $22,377 over the course of the past year, and that during their Dec. 10 meeting, the Friends of the

Library formally asked the board to hand the money over.

Lempke tried to strike a balance, saying that, in recent years, they funded the creation of a sculpture by the library’s main staircase, the fees for Chicago Shakespeare Project performances, as well some programs involving local schools.

But she also complained that, since former Niles village trustee Chris Hanusiak became president, the organization became more stingy with funds. Lempke specifically said that they refused to pay for the retirement party for former library director Linda Weiss, refused to buy travel books and refused to put the bookshelves in the lobby.

That said, Lempke said whether the library decides to transfer the money, keep the money or only transfer part of it, she had no objections.

“I don’t have a problem if we decided to transfer it,” she said. “[The Friends] expect it, and they haven’t received any heads up.”

Drblik, who serves as the board’s liaison with Friends of the Library, defended the group’s approach as a way to increase accountability “I was told Chris took it over, and he mandated everyone to submit requests so they can account for it,”

she said.

Drblik said that with the book purchase Hanusiak was skeptical that there was a need for them in an age when the internet makes it easier to find travel information and asked the staff to justify the request; something that, she said, wasn’t done. As for the shelves, Drblik said Hanusiak had concerns that the pointed corners of the proposed shelf model would pose a danger to kids.

She argued that the board shouldn’t make the decision until Friends of the Library have a chance to respond.

“I’m going to have to vote ‘no,’ because this isn’t a proper way to do it, “ Drblik said. “We didn’t have a discussion with Friends.”

But the remaining trustees didn’t agree, voting to keep the money.

Hanusiak didn’t respond to the Bugle’s request for comment.

Board president Linda Ryan said the she already had an idea for what the funds could be used for once they become available.

“Maybe we can bring back presents for the staff [holiday] party, build the community,” she said.

District 207 shares agreement with South Korean School Agreement marks 1st district Memorandum of Understanding with an overseas high school Maine Township High School District 207 has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with DaeGwang High School in South Korea.

This marks the first District 207 Memorandum of Understanding with an overseas high school.

The objective is to provide student a broader perspective of the world through global educational and cultural relationships.

The 6-point memorandum states that the two schools will “work together to share information and education about extracurricular programs, including sports and clubs, particularly those that enhance student cultural and

global community understanding.”

It also states that the schools will “exchange information on student education and academic research within each school’s student confidentiality standards.”

DaeGwang High School was established in 1947 and is a well known high school in South Korea.

The Memorandum of Understanding was coordinated in part

by District 207 Board member Jin Lee and has been signed by District 207 Superintendent Dr. Ken Wallace and DaeGwang Principal Dr. Kim Chul Kyung.

District 207 board members are President Carla Owen, Vice President Paula Besler, Mary Childers, Teri Collins, Jin Lee, Margaret McGrath and Sean Sullivan.

MAINE EAST DRAMA CLASS SELECTED FOR STATE PERFORMANCE

Maine East High School Drama 3-4 class, taught by Karen Hall, has been selected to perform “Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind” as a showcase production at the Illinois High School Theatre Fest on January 6.

“Too Much Light” consists of 30, 2-minute plays performed in one hour, with audience members choosing the order in which the plays are performed.

Maine East Fine Arts Chair Ed Eubank noted that this is a big honor for students, who will perform the show at the Great Hall at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Illinois.

The Illinois High School Theatre Festival is the largest and oldest non-competitive high school theatre festival in the world.

‘207’s Best’ excel in fine arts performing 3 seniors recognized for excellence in Fine and Performing Arts Three seniors were recently honored by the Maine Township High School District 207 Board of Education as “207’s Best.” For the December honors, Katie Daehler, of Maine South; Stefanos Georgiafentis, of Maine West; and Olivia Tran, of Maine East, were recognized in the category of Fine and Performing Arts.

At Maine South, Principal Shawn Messmer noted that Katie Daehler has participated in 25 athletic organizations, clubs and activities over four years, in addition to maintaining a full Advanced Placement course load.

Among these activities, Katie has been a member of band, orchestra, choir, vocal jazz, drumline and Hawkapella.

She is vice president of Tri-M Music Honorary, secretary of the Thespian Society, captain of the Speech Team and a section leader in three

musical performance groups.

She received several scholarships to attend the month-long, prestigious Birch Creek Percussion and Symphony Sessions in Door County, Wisconsin.

There, she performed in a dozen concerns with other elite high school musicians and professionals.

In his introductory letter, Messmer noted that “Katie is an extremely proficient percussionist, performing a collegiate level musical repertoire. Faculty members in the Fine Arts Department and music directors of local churches have learned that Katie is the ‘go-to gal’ when they need a percussionist in their concert.”

Katie told Board members that she will study sociology and economics and has not yet chosen a college or university.

At West, Stefanos Georgiafen-

tis has been involved in the Visual Arts program, having taken Art 1, Design and Materials 1 and 2 and Digital Imaging. Stefanos has made his mark in the area of Technical Theatre. Since his freshman year, he has been involved in every major and minor theatrical production at Maine West.

In her introductory letter, Principal Dr. Audrey Haugan noted that “He has become a fixture backstage, at the lighting and audio controls and in the scene shop.

His peers have acknowledged his excellence by electing him Vice President of the Maine West Chapter of the International Thespians.

Stefanos is that rare student who has learned and become adept at all operations in the Maine West Theatre.

His leadership skills have become honed while moving from apprentice positions to crew head.

Whether he is building a set or designing an audio or lighting plot, his knowledge allows him to be an authoritative voice.”

She noted that no matter what stressful technical issue might crop up, Stefanos remains calm under pressure and helps others do the same. Stefanos told the Board he will study Tech Theater at Oakton Community College.

At East, Olivia has earned a 4.41 GPA taking numerous AP and accelerated courses. In his introductory letter, Principal Dr. Mike Pressler noted that Olivia, as a fouryear broadcasting student, “has demonstrated an extremely high level of skill and, in my opinion, innate talent in video production.”

Broadcasting teacher Phil Ash wrote that Olivia “has developed a gift for storytelling which is clearly evident in all of her work, regardless of topic, genre or style.”

Her video work covers a broad spectrum that includes dramatic narratives, news packages, public service announcements, movie trailers and music videos.

Olivia has served in several leadership positions, including sophomore class president, co-captain of

Soccer and Scholastic Bowl and as station manager of WMTH-TV. Dr. Pressler noted that Olivia has been a member of the Principal’s Student leadership team for three years and wrote that “Olivia has become one of my main ‘go-to’ students specifically because of her ability to turn out a quality project in short time.” Olivia told Board members she plans to pursue a career in physical therapy and has not yet selected a college or university.

The “207’s Best’ program recognizes outstanding students monthly throughout the school year.

Academic achievement awards are given in two months.

Awards for community service, fine arts, improved performance, elective area of achievement, technology leader/innovator and extracurricular achievement are given one month each.

Teachers nominate students, and an executive committee makes final decisions. Honorees are then recognized by the Board of Education, which instituted the program.

Act Like You’re Sick: Perfect antidote to holiday stress Like a lot of guys, I absolutely hate to admit when I’m getting sick. I take it as a sign of weakness, of mortality. But at some point, around the time I can’t breathe or taste anything, I have to come to terms with myself and admit that I’m not well. And when I do, something amazing happens: I start to take care of myself and eventually feel better.

START BEFORE YOU HAVE TO As long as we ignore all of our body’s warning signs, we remain unhealthy.

But the simple steps of acknowledging the problem and taking some basic actions make all the difference. Removed from denial, we are free to sound the alarms and send all of our reinforcements to put us back together. We allow ourselves to sleep more, eat healthier, take a break from work, and even see the people we care about more often.

The irony is that the acts of a sick person are a foundation for long-term health, both physically and mentally.

The problem is that we don’t usually start them unless there’s already something wrong. Instead of waiting for our bodies and minds to fail, I want to recommend a better approach: Act like you’re sick right now. You will get all the same benefits without the misery of actually being ill.

ors were physical in nature, centered around life-or-death situations. Today, most stress comes from low stakes encounters, such as work and relationship difficulties, or simply trying to survive the holidays.

However, the potential for harm is greater than ever because these kinds of routine events bombard us on a daily basis, and they typically go unnoticed.

The Centers for Disease Control suggests that close to 90 percent of our illnesses are linked to stress, from the common cold to chronic pain. In fact, a good argument can be made that successfully managing stress is the most important task of our adult lives.

Like a rain barrel, our stress accumulates over time. This means that you may be unaware of any harmful effects until the internal barrel spills over. Once it does, you can’t undo the consequences.

A better strategy involves knowing your triggers, the conditions that cause

you the most stress. Some can be avoided, while others can be dealt with better.

Of course some stress is unavoidable – and even helpful – so there’s no use in trying to take advantage of your sick role for too long.

THE GIFT THAT KEEPS GIVING Regardless of your religious affiliation, family history, or shopping preferences, the holiday season inevitably brings with it moments of wonder, as well as a full plate of stress. In the end, no one else will take care of you if you don’t do it for yourself.

This is the mantra of all of the helping professions, from nursing to counseling, yet it is one of the most poorly followed pieces of advice. The result is that a lot of qualified people leave their jobs because they don’t take care of themselves.

If you want to continue experiencing the same results of unmanaged stress – feeling sick, tired, and lacking drive – then keep doing the same thing. But trust me when I say that being stubborn about your health is a punishment that will stay with you long past the new year.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR TO THE EDITOR Since when is having experience for a job not important? I was appalled after reading the December 15 HeraldAdvocate article about a potential City of Park Ridge mayoral candidate who said “I don’t think that’s important.”

The article also reported that the candidate has not previously held any elected position nor served on any appointed city commission, committee or board.

As a natural-born resident of Park

Ridge, I find his comment highly offensive and his lack of experience extremely concerning. Was Head Coach David Inserra just handed the top job for the State Champion Maine South Hawks with zero experience? Absolutely not! As a former Hawk football alumni, I personally saw Coach Inserra gain experience as an assistant coach first. Then only after many successful years of proving his value to the program, was he finally given the opportunity and great responsibility of being

in charge of it.

So, I encourage all Park Ridge voters in this important election to look at the facts. Do you think it is wise to support a candidate with zero experience or one that has been serving our fine community for years on the Park Board, as 7th Ward Alderman and as Acting Mayor?

I know one thing; Martin Maloney is getting my family’s support.

Police respond to reported armed robbery Reported incident occurred at a pharmacy in 800 block of Devon Ave. On Thursday December 15, at 5:21 p.m. Park Ridge police officers responded to a call of an armed robbery at a pharmacy in the 800

block of Devon Avenue, according to police documents.

Responding officers met with the clerk who said that a man ap-

proached the pharmacy counter and pointed to a bottle of prescription narcotics, demanding the clerk hand them over.

The clerk indicated a prescription was needed.

The suspect then raised his shirt, displayed a handgun tucked into

his waistband and stated that he did not want to hurt anyone.

The clerk then complied with the suspect’s demands.

The suspect fled the location, on foot, southbound with an undisclosed amount of prescription narcotic medicine.

The suspect is described as a male black, in his late 20s, tall, last seen wearing a black winter hat, black jacket, black baggy pants and red and white gym shoes. Anyone with information on this case is asked to call Detective King at the Park Ridge Police at (847) 318-5252.

Sanchez N. Munoz, 25, of Evanston, was driving one of the vehicles involved in a Dec. 5 accident on the 6000 block of Oakton and was found to be driving while her driver’s license was suspended.

Frederic Donald, 40, of Mount Prospect, was stopped Dec. 9 for a traffic violation near Dempster and Shermer. He was found to be driving with a suspended driver’s license.

A vehicle was found Dec. 12 in the middle of the road on the 6000 block of Dempster St. because the vehicle ran out of gas. The driver, Mehwish Memon, 30, of Skokie was arrested for driving on a suspended driver’s license.

No Valid Driver’s License Abigail Perezarriaga, 37, of Chicago, was stopped Dec. 11 near Dempster and Birch for a traffic violation and was found to being driving without a valid driver’s license.

Hit and Run Hardy L. Petrick, 68, of Niles, was allegedly involved in a Dec. 3 accident on the 8900 block of Harlem Ave. where he allegedly struck a parked car with an occupant. Suspect was told to pull over by the occupant but he refused and drove off.

Rami S., Howria, 24, of Niles, was stopped Dec. 5 for a traffic violation on the 5800 block of Dempster St. During the encounter Howria allegedly refused to listen to the verbal commands of the officer and advanced on him. Howria was arrested for obstructing a peace officer and also issued a Morton Grove local ordinance citation for possession of cannabis. A passenger, Marie T. Cybulski, 21, of Chicago, was charged with unlawful use possession of a driver’s license.

Possession of drug paraphernalia/cannabis Irfan A Noormohammad, 33, of Morton Grove, was stopped Dec. 8 on the 6000 block of Dempster St. for a traffic violation and was issued a Morton Grove citation

for possession of drug paraphernalia.

Jamal N Elyafi, 19, of Niles, was stopped Dec. 8, near Dempster and Merrill for a violation and was issued a Morton Grove citation for possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of cannabis.

During a Dec. 8 interaction with a police officer on the 9300 block of Oak Park, Robert C. Hackin, 32, of Wheeling, was found to be in possession on cannabis and was issued a Morton Grove citation for possession of cannabis.

Tony Dankha, 24, of Chicago, was stopped Dec. 9 near Central and Greenwood for a violation and was issued a Morton Grove citation for possession of drug paraphernalia.

Jockess M Miller, 25, of Chicago, was arrested Dec. 6 for theft by deception when he knowingly obtained items from Menards, 6301 Oakton, by using counterfeit $100 bills in exchange for the items.

Complainant stated Dec. 8 someone took his was located in the rear or his residence on the 9100 block of Waukegan.

Complainant stated Dec. 14 that he was passing by the window of his house and noticed two male subjects were removing the tires from his vehicle on the 9400 block of Merrill. Subjects left the scene as complainant came out of the house.

Identity Theft Complainant stated Dec. 11 she was looking for health insurance and ended up speaking to a sales person that she found online. She was sent an email that stated it was not major medical and that she will have to pay a fee when filing taxes. She spoke to the sales person over the phone for three hours and gave all of her and her husband’s personal information, social security numbers, birth dates, bank account numbers, and credit/debit card numbers to the sales person.

Almost immediately after the phone conversation ended her husband got an alert on his debit card for a charge. Complainant stated she knew there were go-

ing to be charges for the health insurance so she accepted the charge. By the end of the day the card was charge $949, along with $55 on MasterCard. After complainant suspected this was a scam she cancelled all credit cards and debit cards and alerted her bank.

POLICE BLOTTER Information in Police Reports is obtained from the Niles, Morton Grove and Park Ridge police departments. Individuals in the Police Blotter who have been charged with a crime have not been proven guilty in court. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

NILES A residence in the 8200 block of Elizabeth Avenue was reportedly burglarized on Nov. 28. A there resident said about $100 in cash was stolen, police said.

A residence in the 8800 block of Cumberland Avenue was forcibly entered on Nov. 29 and a box of jewelry was stolen, police said.

Pry marks were also discovered on another nearby residence and the residents reported that the front and rear doorknobs had been broken as well, though no entry was gained, police said.

A 50-year-old Chicago man was cited for disorderly conduct, following too closely and improper overtaking after he allegedly had a verbal altercation with another driver Nov. 30 at Greenwood Avenue and Golf Road. Police said the man was angry that the other driver was traveling at the speed limit on northbound Greenwood.

A 19-year-old man and a 20-yearold man, both of Niles, were each ticketed for possession of marijuana Nov. 30 after police responded to a call of a suspicious car parked in the 6400 block of Howard Street.

A woman told police that she discovered the driver’s side of her car had been keyed while she was inside a store in the 5700 block of Touhy Avenue Nov. 28.

According to police, the woman said that prior to the incident, she had cut off another driver who was waiting for a parking spot.

A 52-year-old woman from Des Plaines was ticketed for public intoxication Nov. 28 after police and paramedics were called to the area of Greenwood Avenue and Church Street.

Batzorig Altangerel, 46, of Skokie, was charged with retail theft on Nov. 29 after police said Altan-

gerel stole two packages of meat from a store in the 8900 block of Milwaukee Avenue by concealing them inside an elastic back brace he was wearing under his jacket.

Altangerel is expected to appear in court Jan. 13.

Tina Piatkowski, 41, of Park Ridge, was charged with felony retail theft Nov. 28 following an incident at a retailer in the 200 block of Golf Mill Center. According to police, Piatkowski was accused of switching prices on two vacuum cleaners and paying a much lower amount for the items. Piatkowski is scheduled to appear in court Dec. 16.

A 63-year-old man told police he was contacted Nov. 25 by a man claiming to be with a loan company who offered him a loan of $5,000. Police said the victim provided the caller with his personal information and sent him $665 worth of gift cards as “insurance” payments for the loan before he suspected he was the victim of a scam. A police investigation is pending.

A vehicle was reported stolen Nov. 30 while it was parked in the 7800 block of Nordica Avenue.

An American flag attached to the outside of an establishment in the 6800 block of North Milwaukee Avenue was reported stolen on Nov. 30, police said.

MORTON GROVE Emilio E Alvarez, 29, of Park Ridge, was arrested Dec. 7 for a battery that occurred on the 5700 block of Dempster.

Alvarez allegedly chased and then shoved a juvenile. He also grabbed him by the hood of his sweatshirt, causing a red mark on his cheek/neck, after the juvenile tried to escape inside a business.

Complainant stated someone broke into the house, on the 5400 block of Warren on Dec. 5 and took jewelry, a camera, a copy of their will/trust, and spare keys to the house.

Loss to Benet in East Suburban Catholic League opener has not sat well with one-loss Notre Dame

Notre Dame is off to a great start to the season, winning six of its first seven games.

However, it was the one loss that left a bitter taste with the Dons.

That loss was a 51-45 home defeat to state powerhouse Benet, which was also undefeated heading into the game, in the East Suburban Catholic Conference opener for both teams.

The Dons opened the game with eight straight points, but only scored four points the final 12 minutes of the half as Benet scored 20 straight points and held a 22-12 lead at the half.

“It was a game of runs,” Les said.

“We started off good and then took some outside shots and got away from pounding it outside. I don’t mind an outside shot, but I want it to come from inside, out. The third and fourth quarter was a little bit more like we are accustomed to.

But we had to trap them and they

would find the open man and hit the shot. They run their stuff well and when you lose a guy, they make you pay. In the second half they shot it really well.”

“It was a game of runs,” Notre Dame senior Matt Stritzel said. “We hit them with a punch early and then they came back. We came out in the third quarter good and came back, but credit to them, they hit shots. It is a tough loss in conference and we just have to bounce back.”

Stritzel scored 18 of his gamehigh 20 points in the second half, but it wasn’t enough.

“I was starting to let the game come to me and get some open looks,” Stritzel said. “I wasn’t forcing shots and the game was coming to me.”

Having an inside-outside game is important for the Dons and they got away from that at times against the Redwings.

Kelleher, Dons off to solid start this year

Notre Dame has had a solid bowling program in recent years, with state berths the past two years and an all-state bowler the past two years as well.

Several players return this year for the Dons, including junior Connell Kelleher, who took seventh in the state last year.

“We have a lot of the same players as last year, just some weren’t on varsity as much last year,”

Kelleher said. “We want to make it back to state again this year. We would love to win the Catholic League as well. Those are the two big things. We need to work on team spirit. When we do bad we all get down. We need to be more confident in ourselves as well.”

“A big goal is to make it back to state,” junior Martin Munoz said.

“The key will be energy. We need to be pumped up. When are aren’t, we tend do be down and don’t bowl well. Every pin counts.”

Kelleher is hoping to do what re-

cent graduate Tom Octal couldn’t do: make all-state in back-to-back years.

“Being all-state again is definitely a goal for me,” Kelleher said.

“I think a big thing for me right now is my armswing. It has been starting to go away from my body and has been causing me to pull a lot of my shots. Balance at the foul line and spare shooting has been issues as well. Those three things I need to work on the most.”

The confidence is definitely there having known he can do it

and knowing the state lanes have been historically favorable to lefties.

“I think I feel more confident now after making all-state last year,” Kelleher said. “I should be able to do it again this year.”

Kelleher and the Dons have been struggling of late after finishing in outside the top teams in a recent tournament at Vernon Hills.

“I didn’t do too well, not as good as I normally do,” Kelleher said. “I came in seventh last year and this

year I definitely didn’t meet expectations. It was partially my fault.

The past couple weeks I’ve been struggling. I couldn’t make the best shots and spares have been an issue. I’ve been struggling with left side spares.”

“The lanes were difficult at the beginning,” Munoz said.

“My teammate, Connell Kelleher, helped me move. In the sixth game, I shot a 276 and it was good.

I had figured out the lanes by then.

This gives me a lot of confidence going forward.”

Emanuel announces creation of CPGA New group will raise funds, plan restoration of Jackson Park, South Shore Golf Courses; Tiger Woods’ TGR Design will design upgraded facility

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago Park District General Superintendent and CEO Michael Kelly today announced the creation of the Chicago Parks Golf Alliance (CPGA), a group to be led

by Mark Rolfing, who will serve as the organization’s President and Founder. In partnership with the City and Park District, the CPGA aims to restore and improve the existing golf courses at Jackson Park and South Shore Golf Courses to create an economic and recreational asset for the South Side of Chicago.

“This is more than simply a unique opportunity to restore a historic public golf course, it’s a unique opportunity to drive resources and investments on the South Side,” said Mayor Emanuel.

“And even with this restoration the course will remain a real community asset because we’re going to ensure that the neighborhood golfers who have been hitting the links here for years will be able to continue to access and enjoy it at a reduced rate.”

The idea to restore the historic golf courses – Jackson Park opened in 1899 and South Shore Golf Course opened in 1907 – is not a new idea, as a framework plan created by the Park District in 2000 contained various recommendations for the South Lakefront area, one of which proposed upgrading the two golf courses.

The not-for-profit CPGA will oversee fundraising and development of a combined and upgraded golf facility, which would be situated within the confines of the existing two golf courses.

The golf course restoration would tentatively begin in 2017, financed primarily through private funds generated through the CPGA. Completion of the course, which would allow players to start and finish their rounds at either South Shore or Jackson Park, as well as the completion of a short course for the entire family, is targeted for late 2020.

In launching the CPGA, Mark Rolfing, an award winning Golf Course Developer and NBC Golf Channel Analyst, also announced the golf course restoration would be designed by Tiger Woods’ TGR Design.

“It’s an honor for me and TGR Design to be designing this golf course in one of America’s greatest golf cities,” said Woods. “This project can create incredible possibilities for the community on the South Side. We want to design a course that everyone will enjoy.”

Additionally, the CPGA will work with the Chicago-based Western Golf Association to promote caddie programs that will help young men and women from nearby neighborhoods earn the prestigious Evans Scholarship and create a venue worthy of hosting

its flagship PGA TOUR event, the BMW Championship.

According to Western Golf Association and Evans Scholars Foundation President and CEO John Kaczkowski, “The Western Golf Association enthusiastically welcomes this opportunity to grow our game and change the lives of deserving young men and women in a city that means so much to our organization. We envision this facility serving as a pipeline for the Evans Scholarship Program, which has sent more than 11,000 caddies to college since 1930. Restoring the South Shore and Jackson Park courses could provide a compelling site for future PGA TOUR events, including the BMW Championship, as early as 2021 when the event is expected to return to Chicago.”

Lisa Quinn, Executive Director of The First Tee of Greater Chicago, concurs, “We are proud to participate in this exciting project that will no doubt rejuvenate participation in the game of golf.

Its youth initiatives will ensure a safe place to play and opportunities to develop as players and be successful in the formative years.

It will enable us to increase our programs which have been active at South Shore and Jackson Park for more than 15 years, expand the Chicago Park District Junior League and reach thousands of more youth on an annual basis.”

Despite the loss, the outlook for the season looks bright.

“We just have to get a little better,” Les said. “We lost some key guys from a year ago. We have some guys who are very capable, they just need some more varsity game experience, which obviously they are getting now. We’re ok, we will get better.”

“I think we should be pretty good,” Stritzel said. “The past two

years we’ve lost to the eventual state champion by a combined three points. I think we are just as talented this year.”

They will also have the benefit of some experienced players come playoff time. “It keeps us composed,” Stritzel said. “We’ve been in tough situations. We’ve been in big games. That all helps us. And we can take the underclassmen under our wing and keep them composed.”

PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem states, “As one of the longest continuous host organizations of a PGA TOUR tournament, we are delighted to see the Western Golf Association’s involvement with this project. The possibility of bringing the BMW Championship to this facility is one that we are willing to consider as the various pieces of this initiative come together. Tiger Woods’ involvement gives us great confidence in the quality of the design and direction for the project in terms of bringing golf to young people.

The integration of The First Tee of Greater Chicago into the overall Master Plan of this project is also

extremely exciting.”

BOARD ENDS BONUS VACATION DAYS The Niles Public Library Board of Trustees voted unanimously to end the practice of giving extra paid personal days off for employees who served a certain number of years.

Library director Susan Lempke said that the policy was put in place 15 years ago, when the library faced a budget crunch, and it was supposed to make up for lack of raises.

The employees since got raises, but the law remained the same.

Lempke argued that, since the library has to pay someone else to handle absent employee’s duties, the policy was a drain on its finances, especially in light of the changes in state law that expanded the definition of sick leave, allowing employees to take more time off. While some trustees had reservations, they ultimately found her arguments persuasive.

Under the previous policy, employees who worked at the library for 10 years got an extra personal day, an employee who worked for 15 years got two more, employees who worked for 20 years go three and employees who work for 25 years got four.

Since unused personal days could be carried over, this meant that an employee who worked for 25 years could potentially save up 10 personal days.

Lempke proposed replacing the

least 18 years of age to be entered in a random drawing.

Trustee Barbara Nakanishi read out a letter from one librarian, who said that perks like this help to make up for the low salary. Removing extra vacation days makes her feel like the employees weren’t valued.

Lempke said she wasn’t entirely unsympathetic, but getting rid of the perk was still a prudent thing to do. “[Librarians] get masters degrees and a not great salary, and benefits are supposed to make up for that,” she said. “But I think we went a little overboard 15 tears ago.”

Board president Linda Ryan, who works as a librarian at Maine South High School, said that while it pained her to hear that librarians may feel undervalued and unappreciated, she still felt it was the right thing to do.

“In my job, we have to work 187 days, and we don’t have longevity,” she said. “It never changes, because we need you to work. We can’t run a business if you don’t come to work.”

As the resolution came up for vote, Nakanishi said she was persuaded.

“I hate to do it to the librarian who pleaded with me, but I can see the rationale, I can see the logic,” she said.

When using a turkey fryer always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for safe and proper use.

Always use a turkey fryer outdoors but not on a wooden deck or inside a garage. Use a turkey fryer with thermostat controls to ensure the oil does not become overheated.

Thaw your turkey completely, ice on the turkey will cause the hot oil to splatter.

Make sure you don’t overfill the fryer with oil to prevent the hot oil from overflowing when you add the turkey.

Keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from the turkey fryer at all times.

Put a lid on it. If a fire starts in a pan or pot, put a lid on it or slide a cookie sheet over it and turn the heat off. Leave the pan or pot covered while it cools down. If the fire does not immediately go out call

Preparing for winter’s darkness Know the signs of Seasonal Affective Disorder ERIC HOLLANDER FOR THE BUGLE As the area experiences the shortest days of the year, just after the winter solstice, most look with optimism towards the days to come; patiently watching as each succeeding day becomes slightly longer and eventually slightly warmer. But for some, these bleakest days of winter are more than a trial of patience and cold-weather endurance.

Recent studies show 6.1 percent of Americans experience a condition most frequently known as Seasonal Affective Disorder, SAD, in varying severity during the wintertime. First detailed by Norman E. Rosenthal in 1984, the condi-

tion has endured significant dispute among medical professionals.

However, certain features and criteria remain unchanged.

Extreme lethargy, insomnia, confusion, and depression are just a few of the most common symptoms of SAD. The primary problem is a lack in serotonin, a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure perception. Although there are several methods for boosting serotonin levels in humans, only a few are natural and risk free.

Freezing temperatures and limited daylight are instinctive cues that resources are low and energy should be conserved. Among many animals, extreme responses include migration or hibernation.

Since humans have the ability to outwit seasonal challenges, neither of these behaviors are necessary.

However, certain uncontrollable impulses remain. In fact, new re-

search has shown that nearly 1 in 3 people complain of at least acute SAD during the winter months.

Regardless of the severity, there are some simple anecdotes that can benefit many. For generations, humans have been living in seasonal climates like in Illinois, and many that are much more extreme, such as Denmark and Norway.

The city, Troms� in Norway is located 217 miles above the Arctic Circle. Each year this region can expect to observe about 60 arctic nights, a 24-hour period when the sun does not appear.

According to the residents of Troms�, codfish oil, fire, daily fresh air, and a well-lit home are critical.

But there are coping mechanisms as well.

The Danish word, hygge, is used in several Scandinavian countries to describe the general activity of coping with winter darkness. It

roughly translates as coziness, togetherness, or positive socialization. Hygge is acknowledged in these cultures as an important daily activity.

Lighting some candles and finding a dose of codfish oil are simple enough, but what about hygge?
