How students can handle middle school transition A child’s school-aged years are filled with many different lessons and experiences.

While in school, kids have the opportunity to broaden their horizons and meet new people.

Many students will attend various schools before moving on to college, and therefore they must learn how to adjust to new schools.

While many students attend elementary school together for years, students may not know their classmates once they make it to middle school, which tends to boast larger student bodies than elementary schools.

That’s because many middle schools’ student bodies are a combination of several elementary schools. Making the transi-

tion from elementary school to middle school or junior high can spark anxiety in students, but that does not have to be.

The National Education Association says a common element of a successful middle school experience is a smooth and positive transition from elementary school.

The following are a few ways students can handle their transition to middle school.

• Participate in a school-based transition program.

Middle schools frequently host open houses for elementary school students, who can take tours of the campus. Parents can take part in these events with their children.

If your schedule does not al-

low you to attend, then schedule a private tour with the middle school principal or a faculty member. Middle school guidance counselors or guest speakers also may make the rounds,

visiting elementary schools directly. Be sure your student attends such information sessions so he or she can get an idea of what to expect during middle school.

• Dispel any myths your youngster might have heard about middle school.

Youngsters hear lots of things about middle schools, and much of what kids hear might be untrue.

Ask kids what they have heard about the schools they will be moving on to, and then do your best to dispel any myths.

• Find a middle school buddy.

Ask an older sibling or invite someone who is currently enrolled in the school to speak with your child and answer any ques-

tions he or she may have.

Hearing directly from a fellow student may make your child feel more comfortable about what to expect.

• Talk about any other fears.

Engage in an open dialogue with your son or daughter about any additional fears he or she may have.

If students are worried about academics, spend some time over the summer going over the curriculum.

If the potential for peer pressure is a cause for concern, reinforce advice on how to react to peer pressure.

Parents and their children can take several steps to make students’ transitions to middle school as smooth as possible.

Niles hosts Holly Jolly Market & Festival Niles residents celebrated start of holiday season at the Holly Jolly Market & Festival on Saturday, Nov.24

Beneath exploding fireworks, Niles residents celebrated the start of the holiday season at the Holly Jolly Market and Festival on Saturday, Nov.24.

The pyrotechnics capped a tree lighting ceremony that featured one large tree and three smaller trees decorated by local schoolchildren.

Community Engagement Coordinator Katie Schneider said the event is in its fifth year.

“It actually started with the tree lighting event,” she said.

“The mayor loved it and just wanted to grow it. It includes tons of family activities.”

New this year was the ice sculptor out in the parking lot and a laser show. The event also featured a trackless train, horsedrawn sleigh rides, a petting zoo, carolers, Santa and Mrs. Claus, roasted nuts and the Christmas Market 0 a tent full of local vendors.

“The kids love it, and it gets you in the spirit of the holidays after Thanksgiving,” said Antonia Terihaj, who was there with her son and daughter.

“It’s a great way to get to know your community.”

Debi Gajewski is a member of the Niles Arts and Culture Council. She sat at a table crowded

with miniature trees decorated with handmade ornaments - multicolored spheres and wooden designs like sports team logos, cartoon characters, snowmen and penguins.

“We’re here to promote art and handmade items,” Gajewski said. But she said her favorite part of the event is playing Mrs. Claus, and getting to meet all the children.

Chicago resident Megan Crawford brought her daughter to the festival for that purpose.

“We’re going to have her see Santa and Mrs. Claus,” she said.

“It’s just a nice family event.”

Nearby, Joyce Armstrong watched passersby from a table full of her wares -- small handknit stuffed mice in Christmas outfits. She is the owner of Mouseville by Joyce.

“It seems like the people are really having a good time,” she said.

“I love seeing all the kids,” added her friend Debbie Landeene, owner of Debbie’s Designs Jewelry.

The tables next to them offered an assortment of handmade ornaments, bracelets, wallets, necklaces, watches and hand-knit hats and scarves. The Village of Niles also had a table.

“It’s a lot of fun seeing people, local people,” Freida Holowicki said. Holowicki was selling ornaments for the Village of Niles.

It was her third year at the festival. “We’ve got a lot for the kids.”

Grace Ciemny said the activities for kids were very well thoughtout. She attended the event last year and decided to come back again this year.

“I loved everything, actually -- the crafts, the bus,” she said.

“I bring my little grandson now and he loves it.”

At the Niles Family Services booth, Kate Wilamska spoke with local residents. She said they were thankful for the donations they’d received.

“We’re celebrating the generosity of a lot of donors in the

Village of Niles,” she said. “It’s a fantastic atmosphere.”

Even residents of Chicago got in on the fun.

“It’s very nice and kid friendly,” said Chicagoan Jan Gillespie, who said her friend lives right across the street from the festival. “I’ll be back next year.”

It earned the Five-Star Outstanding Chapter designation in 201516. The chapter also received Outstanding Officer Team recognition, won the Outstanding College Project award and earned a Paragon Award for the chapter advisor.

How the U. of I wound up in Champaign-Urbana

BY TOM KACICH OF THE (CHAMPAIGN) NEWSGAZETTE ChampaignUrbana owes its prominence to the University of Illinois, and the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign owes its existence to Clark Robinson Griggs. If it hadn’t been for Griggs — probably the greatest political operator in Champaign County’s history — the U of I or, as it was then known, the Illinois Industrial University, would have been located in Jacksonville, Lincoln, Bloomington or perhaps Chicago.

Yet, there is no Griggs Hall at the university, no statues of Griggs on campus.

Even in Urbana, where he served a year as mayor, there is only a four-block-long street that bears his name.

One can only guess why Griggs’ name has been forgotten by all but the history books. Perhaps the university is just a little ashamed of the man who could be called its father.

You see, Griggs was a bit of a scoundrel.

Much of the story of Griggs’ delightfully sly effort comes from an interview he gave to Allan Nevins (who later became known as the father of oral histories) shortly before his death.

Historians have disputed some details of Griggs’ story, but there seems little doubt that he was an operator who would fit well in today’s Statehouse.

Griggs was a Massachusetts native who came to Champaign County in 1859. He purchased land north of Philo on Yankee Ridge, a place so named because of all the New Englanders who settled there.

At the start of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Union Army and served as a sutler, a man who sold food and drink to soldiers.

After the war, Griggs was elected to the Illinois House. He had already served two terms in the Massachusetts Legislature and apparently had learned a lot there about political maneuvering.

Griggs went to Springfield a freshman lawmaker who didn’t act like one.

In a 1915 interview shortly before his death, Griggs told Nevins how he helped bring the university to a swampy, sparsely settled community.

It started with $40,000 appropriated by the supervisors of Champaign and Urbana townships and Griggs’ decision to travel most of the state (everywhere but Jacksonville, Lincoln and Bloomington), meet with other state representatives and build support for Champaign-Urbana.

In five weeks, he said, he interviewed 40 House members and gained pledges from 15 of them.

Next, he met with the governor and lieutenant governor and with the chairmen of the state Republican and Democratic parties. In those conversations he learned that the postwar Legislature would be occupied with a number of special interests.

Southern Illinois wanted a prison; Peoria and Springfield were fighting over which would be the state capital, and Chicago wanted to deepen the Chicago River and develop a system of parks and boulevards. Such knowledge would be important in future vote-trading.

When the Legislature went into session in January 1867, the Champaign County Committee moved into Springfield’s Leland Hotel, where for the next three months it held the principal reception room and a suite of parlors and bedrooms. The rooms were used to entertain legislators and their constituents with either drinks, light refreshments or sumptuous dinners of oysters or quail.

Lawmakers were supplied with cigars and theater tickets. Late in the session, Griggs arranged for a special train to take legislators to Champaign-Urbana.

None of the other communities seeking the university had a similar arrangement.

Inside the House Chambers, Griggs showed his skill by running for speaker.

For two days, the House was tied up in endless voting. On the night after the second day, an intermediary visited Griggs and asked what it would take to

get him to drop out of the race. Griggs wanted the chairmanship of the Committee on Agriculture and Mechanic Arts — the committee that would hear all the bills about locating the university — and the right to choose its members.

He got it, dropped out of the race for speaker and thus was able to control the legislation.

As the session progressed, advocates for the other communities, particularly Jacksonville, wondered why the university location legislation wasn’t being heard in the committee.

Griggs would explain that he had called the committee together but that he couldn’t get a quorum. Then he’d publically announce another committee meeting but privately tell its members not to show up.

This went on until late in the session when Griggs was convinced he had the votes. Finally, on Feb. 20, the legislation — which named Champaign as the site of the university — reached the floor.

An amendment was made to substitute Jacksonville for Champaign. It failed 61-20.

Another motion was made to substitute Normal. It failed 58-26.

A third motion was made to insert Lincoln for Champaign. It failed 60-21.

Then the legislation naming Champaign was put to a vote and was approved 67-10. The Senate followed suit Feb. 25.

Three days later, Gov. Richard Oglesby signed the legislation.

Opponents charged that Griggs had bought legislators with a “slush fund.”

Jonathan Turner, who had sought the university for Jacksonville, said the Legislature had exhibited “a degree of corruption, hypocrisy, drunkenness and debauchery unparalleled in the history of Illinois.”

The state wasn’t even 50 years old. A much greater history of corruption lay ahead.

Maine South junior Annika Wagner sets state mark in 200-yard IM to earn first Hawk title since 1984

EVANSTON — Maine South is not known as a swimming school, but that will change if Annika Wagner has anything to say about it.

Wagner’s performance Saturday at the state finals at Evanston spoke volumes about how good she is.

The junior staked her claim to being one of the top swimmers in the state, if not the best, by winning the 200-yard individual medley in a state-record 2:00.13 and taking second in the 500 freestyle in 4:48.53.

Wagner is the fifth female swimmer in Maine South history to win a state championship but the first to do so since Courtney Madsen won the 50 and 100 free in 1984.

“To be the first one to do it in over 30 years is phenomenal and hopefully it generates some interest among the younger

kids in the community,” Maine South coach Don Kura said. “(We hope) to get some more swimmers who are interesting in swimming year-round and making it their primary sport instead of something they kind of do when they have time.”

Wagner would love to see that.

She burst onto the prep scene as a freshman when she took fourth in the 200 IM and 500, the won two more medals last year by finishing second in the IM and fifth in the 100 free.

Yet that only moved the needle a little in terms of getting the school’s attention to turn to swimming.

“Maybe a little,” Wagner said.

“Freshman year our team was really small.It’s gotten a little bit better over the years but there’s still not that much interest. Our school is really focused on football.”

Calvillo turns volleyball program around Oakton Community College volleyball head coach Miguel Calvillo might get some phone calls as a remodeler after the reclamation project he did with the college’s volleyball program this season.

Calvillo entered the season inheriting a one-win team from a year ago and turned the Owls’ fortunes 180 degrees, going 2012.

The backbone of his team was three returning sophomores: Yngride Jean-Philippe (Evanston, Evanston Township High School), Alena (A.J.) Alwan (Glenview/Glenbrook South High School) and Elmina Alic (Skokie, Niles West High School), who were all named to the NJCAA Region IV All-Region Team and the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) Volleyball All-Conference Team.

Calvillo says the dedication by the three returning players was contagious: “The new girls saw the sophomores working so hard.

The freshmen caught on to that and were able to ‘get it’ to work intensely. The commitment by the players and doing all the coaching staff asked of them led to turning the program around.”

Jean-Philippe’s 5-foot-11inch frame allowed the All-ISCC first team selection to dominate on the court.

She finished the season with a bang, swimming arguably the toughest combination of individual events by actually going faster in the finals than she did in Friday’s prelims.

The IM championship was not a surprise and neither was the record, at least to Wagner.

She clocked 2:00.94 in the prelims, which was nearly a second faster than Rosary senior Sydney VanOvermeiren for the fastest time of the day.

The middle blocker led the nation in solo blocked shots (121) and led the Owls with 296 total kills.

Owls captain Alwan was named to the ISCC second team with 1.77 kills per set, 4.21 assists per set and 1.67 digs per set to complement a .221 hitting percentage.

Outside hitter Alic averaged 1.92 kills per set, 1.71 digs per set and a .268 hitting percentage, earning ISCC honorable mention.

“It says a lot about their talent that the trio was named to the all-region team,” Calvillo says. “I’m so proud of them, and it shows that hard work always pays off in the end.”

Ironically, Calvillo, who served as an assistant coach in 2017, didn’t plan on coming back for the 2018 season.

“When I came to turn my backpack in, the captain asked me to stay,” Calvillo recalls.

“That belief in my system convinced me to stay. This season’s journey as a first-year head coach was very emotional the way it went down.”

He credits former Oakton volleyball players Cyril Onate and Mandy Aragon, who joined the team as assistant coaches the first day of practice, with much of the team’s success.

“Cy and Mandy did a great job with their leadership,” Calvillo

says. “Having not attended Oakton, I wasn’t aware of what the college was like. The assistant coaches understood the school culture and mentored the players along. Also, Cy and Mandy brought plenty of energy while they were relating to the squad.”

In the NJCAA Division II Volleyball Tournament, Oakton posted a three-set sweep over Highland Community College in the district tournament quarterfinals before falling to Sauk Valley Community College in four sets (14-25, 23-25, 25-23 and 19-25).

“My goal during the season was not to put any pressure on the girls for the playoffs,” Calvillo says. “The aim was to just qualify for the playoffs and try to win one match. The rest was a bonus. I’m so proud of what we accomplished this season. I think we surprised a lot of people.”

Jean-Philippe adds, “Since this was my last season playing volleyball at Oakton, this meant a lot to me. Our team put in a lot of hard work, and our goal all along was just to win as many matches as possible.”

• Jean-Philippe was selected the college’s female studentathlete of the month for November.

The student-athlete of the month is presented nine months during the year to one

male and one female studentathlete displaying excellence in the areas of academics, athletics and campus involvement or service.

Jean-Philippe, a middle blocker, played a key role in the turnaround of the Oakton volleyball program as the Owls finished 20-12 this past season after a one-win season in 2017.

The Owls advanced to the district semifinal round of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Volleyball Tournament, just one game away from qualifying for nationals “I wasn’t expecting this award,” Jean-Philippe says.

“However, it does feel good to know hard work pays off. “I’m extremely honored to represent the college in a positive light.”

Jean-Philippe’s was named to the NJCAA Region IV All-Region Team and to the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference Volleyball All-Conference First Team.

“Without a doubt, Yngride is one of the top players in the district and is one the most gifted athletes I’ve ever worked with in my 10 years of coaching,” says Miguel Calvillo, Oakton head coach. “She may not be one of the most talkative players on the team, but she is a gentle giant in the way she hits the ball.

The loudest noise in the gyms this season came from when

she hit the ball, the ball hitting the ground and the ‘oohs and aahs’ from the crowds.”

Jean-Philippe says her passion for the sport began at ETHS: “I love the competitiveness of the sport. I enjoy competing with others, even my teammates. Also because of the sport, I’ve made many life-long friends.”

She brings that same passion to the classroom with similar results, garnering a 3.28 cumulative grade-point-average. JeanPhilippe plans on finishing her courses at Oakton through the summer so she could earn her associate degree with the career goal of becoming a pediatric nurse.

While she’s no longer playing volleyball at the college and continuing her athletic career remains up in the air, JeanPhilippe gave all she had to the Oakton Owls.

“I always try to assist my teammates by encouraging them to go to class, and if they had any questions about the school, I try to find answers for them,” says Jean-Philippe, who also is a student worker for the college’s athletics department.

“I especially feel like I was a role model for the freshmen on the team to show them how to balance school and volleyball. I just like knowing that I was able to help in some way.”

“It’s pretty cool,” Wagner said.

“I’ve gone 1:58 in the club season, so that was my goal, was to go under 2 minutes. Sadly, it didn’t happen but it’s OK.” It was more than OK to Kura, who was impressed by not stunned by Wagner’s record win.

“She’s been training IM for a really long time,” Kura said.

“Last March she was even faster than she was today.

“This format here is tight and condensed. It’s not optimal for warming up, necessarily, but I knew she had the potential for a state-record swim in her and

she was able to go out and get it today.

“It’s really a testament to her and her kind of will to go ahead and be better than she was yesterday.”

Incredibly, Wagner did the same thing in the 500, where she shattered her personal-best time by five seconds. She timed 4:50.54 in the prelims to finish second behind Neuqua Valley sophomore Rachel Stege, who broke a decade-old state record by timing 4:46.14.

In the finals, Stege took the early lead with a blistering pace, but Wagner at one point drew even with her and Stege only pulled away in the final 20 yards, winning in 4:47.20. Wagner hit

the wall in 4:48.53 “She brought it today, that’s for sure,” Kura said. “(We said) let’s change up the race strategy and get after it earlier, see if we can give (Stege) a run.

“Maybe she has an off day and you put yourself in position to be able to win that one as well.

(Wagner) did that but Rachel Stege was just a little bit better than her today.”

The winner of the IM is generally regarded as the best swimmer in the state because it requires mastery of all four strokes. Combined with the 500, it is a grueling double, one which is not Wagner’s preference.

“I really want to swim the 200 IM and 200 free,” Wagner said.

“Those are my two better events, but they are (run) back-to-back, so you can’t really do that.

“So freshman year I went up to the 500 and sophomore year I went down to the 100 free. I wasn’t sure about the 100 free so then I came back to the 500 free.

I think it was worth it because (today) was my best time by a lot.”

In other results, Maine South’s 400 free relay team of senior Amna Sorbun, Wagner, junior Natalie Waida and senior Margaret Edsey finished 22nd in Friday’s prelims in 3:36.22. Junior divers Riley Bond and Bronwyn Bond placed 29th and 30th with 172.90 points and 172.65 points, respectively.
