Battista named Oakton assoc. vice president Marc Battista as the college’s associate vice president for workforce education/ dean of business and career programs The Board of Trustees of Oakton Community College on Nov. 14 affirmed the appointment of Marc Battista as the college’s associate vice president for workforce education/dean of business and career programs, effective Monday, Jan. 7, 2019. Battista is currently dean, sustainability, business and career technologies at Elgin Community College.

At Oakton, Battista will be responsible for long- and short-term planning and implementation for the adult education, business and career programs, as well as continuing education and workforce development credit and noncredit areas of the college. As leader of the division, he will also be responsible for ensuring the quality and relevance of the academic programs and services.

“Marc is uniquely qualified for this job, given his experience in career and technical education and adult education,” says Vice President for Academic Affairs Ileo N.

Lott, Ed.D. “My expectation is that he will immediately leverage his ability to work collaboratively with our faculty and external partners.”

Battista served in Elgin’s Division of Sustainability, Business and Career Technologies as dean, interim dean and associate dean since January 2016, overseeing academic programs that include business and office careers, hospitality professions, transportation careers, public service professions and industrial technologies.

“I am thrilled to be joining the Oakton team and especially excited to be part of the workforce education and career programs team to assure that all students have the opportunity to earn meaningful credentials that will lead to immediate and long-term employability for years to come.” Battista says.

Prior to his service at Elgin, Battista spent nearly four years at City Colleges of Chicago (2012-16), where he was responsible for the management of the transitions

team, working closely with each city college to assure they had increased the number of students who transitioned from upper ESL (English as a second language) to HSE (high school equivalency) levels into credit bearing classes.

Battista was assistant director of ESL at Triton College after spending three years at Kaplan International English as an academic manager and ELL (English language learner) faculty member. He also was an ESL instructor at Harry S. Truman College (City Colleges of Chicago) and spent two years teaching English to nonnative speakers at Chonnam National University in Gwangju, South Korea.

Battista is a member of ACTE (Association for Career and Technical Education) and IACEA (Illinois Adult and Continuing Educators Association).

He earned his master’s degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), applied linguistics, from the University of Chicago and his B.B.A. with an emphasis in marketing from Loyola University Chicago. Battista is currently working on a doctorate in education policy, organization, and

leadership from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

NOTED CERAMICIST BEN BATES COMING TO OAKTON NOV. 29

Prominent Chicago ceramicist Ben Bates will discuss his unique techniques at a free public Visiting Artist Series event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, at Oakton Community College, 1600 E. Golf Road, Des Plaines, Room 1100.

“While Ben’s work at heart consists of traditional designs, he strives to embody the essence of artifacts without just reproducing them,” Oakton Chair of Art and Design Lou Pierozzi says. “Ben uses a collaborative process to communicate feelings and ideas without specifics so his compositions are mysterious while evoking multiple interpretations.”

Bates’ work has been widely exhibited and is part of numerous museums, galleries and private collections. He has been an artist, teacher and curator in the Chicago area since 1988. Bates lives in Libertyville and is currently a studio artist and ceramics instructor at the College of Lake County. He earned his master’s degree in fine arts at

Southern Illinois Edwardsville and his bachelor’s degree at Kansas City Art Institute.

The Visiting Artist Series is hosted by Oakton’s art department and made possible by a generous grant from the Oakton Educational Foundation.

Small Shots Basketball for little ones begins Dec. 1 The Niles Park District next month will offer Small Shots Basketball for boys and girls in Grades K through 2nd to learn the fundamentals of the sport in three separate classes.

dribble, shoot and play offense as well as defense in a six-week program that begins Saturday December 1 and runs through January 19. Parents can enroll their players in a 9 AM to 10 AM class, a 10:15 AM to 11:15 AM

Benet libero Hattie Monson is 2018 Voyager Media Girls’ Volleyball Player of the Year

Benet Academy junior libero Hattie Monson made the alltournament team this season at the Wheaton Classic and Autumnfest this season, but did not receive tournament accolades at the Wheaton North Tournament.

It wasn’t that Monson had a poor showing at the event – it was that on the final day, she was simply a no-show.

Instead of playing with Benet, she was 1,800 miles away playing libero for the USA Youth National Team as it won gold at the NORCECA U18 Girls’ Continental Championship. Monson posted 37 digs and 19 serve receives overseas and was named both tournament’s best digger and best receiver.

When she was playing for Benet this season, the junior Notre Dame commit had 383 digs, 47 assists and 29 service aces and helped the Redwings to a third-place finish in IHSA Class 3A. For her efforts, Monson is named 2018 Voyager Media Girls Volleyball Player of the Year.

“I have been playing volleyball for a long time, but it helps that our block this season has been so consistent that they have put me in the best positions where I know where to stand on defense. I have had so much experience passing so many

balls,” she said. “The past two years, they have talked about being down state and they talk about what it is to be a Benet player, and I didn’t really understand that my freshman year, but as I get older, I understand how important these moments are.”

Benet Academy has had talent at the libero position over the years, but coach Brad Baker is not ready to place Monson near the top of that list.

Not just yet, anyway.

“When her career is done, we will look back then, but she is not done. She is unbelievable in serve receive, which is the most important skill,” Baker said. “She makes reads and understands the flow of the game and puts herself in a position to make those plays. People don’t give her enough credit for her speed and her ability to run down balls and completely give up her body.

“She is just a gym rat and she loves it. Those gym rat kids are the ones that you want on your side.

She plays every day and barely takes a day off and when you do that, your instincts grow. When you are 30 years old and you say, ‘if I had the athletic ability I had at 20 and know what I know now…’ She already has that because she has put in the time.”

“She is a great athlete who as a sophomore was one of the best hitters in the area,” said coach Carrie Prosek. “Being 6-3, and great vertical she can get around or over any block. She will be a huge threat the next two years.

MADISON CUCHRAN, DOWNERS GROVE NORTH Sophomore libero tallied 541 digs, 78 service aces and 50 service aces for the Class 4A runner-up Trojans.

LUCY DUMFORD, DOWNERS GROVE SOUTH The 6-foot senior outside hitter is committed to D-I High Point University in North Carolina.

She posted 287 kills, 54 digs and 49 blocks on the season. The threeyear starter was all-conference, team MVP all-tournament at the Rich East Invite.

ELIZABETH DUNLAP, DOWNERS GROVE NORTH Junior setter posted 979 assists to lead North to the state final match.

EMILY HOLBROOK, JCA The 5-8 senior outside hitter wproved that sub-6-footers can lead a team to a state medal. The Arizona State recruit 274 kills, 16 blocks and 337 digs on the season.

Was named to the All-ESCC team “Emily has been a three-year starter and has been a go-to player in each of those years. She has amazing jumping ability and plays like she is 6 feet tall,” said coach Christine Scheibe. “I sometimes refer to her as the Energizer Bunny who just keeps going and going.

Being a six rotation player, she is an asset to the team in both the front and back row contributing with her excellent passing, back row attacks, and defense. She will be attending Arizona State University on a volleyball scholarship where she will be a libero/defensive specialist.

Emily has taken her role as a captain very seriously and instituted a big sister/little sister program with the freshman team this year and has led many team bonding activities.”

JILL HOOK, LOCKPORT Led the Porters with 395 digs and 51 service aces and also tallied 59 assists.

“Jill was a special player for the Lockport program as she was a starter in nearly all positions throughout her four years: Setter (Freshman), OH (Sophomore/ Junior), OPP. (Junior), DS (Junior) and ultimately a Libero for her senior year,” said coach Nick Mraz.

“Before the season, our serve receive was the biggest question in our offense and she stepped up to solidify our back row throughout the year.

“Her serve was an added bonus as her float would eat up many teams to get them out of system on a consistent basis.”

KYLA KENNEY, BENET Sophomore outside hitter 281 kills, 31 blocks, 152 digs and 17 service aces for the Class 4A thirdplace Redwings.

Joins Monson and Ally Van Eeckeren as the only Benet players to play six rotations.

TAYLOR LANDFAIR, PLAINFIELD CENTRAL One of the top hitters in the area, the University of Minnesota recruit posted an area-best 505 kills on the season as well as 242 digs.

MARGARET MAHLKE, DOWNERS GROVE NORTH The 6-foot outside hitter posted 458 kills, 46 blocks, 246 digs and 35 aces for the best team in North history based on advancement.

She is a four-year starter for the Trojans and helped the team to a second-place finish in Class 4A. She will play collegiately at St. Louis University. She was all-tournament

at Plainfield South, the Wheaton Classic and Autumn fest.

“She has been a steady, reliable force for us throughout her time in our program and is one of the primary reasons we advanced to the Elite Eight last year and had another successful season this year,” said coach Mark Wasik. “She is the epitome of a coach’s player and consummate teammate. She leads by both example and with her voice and she has the fullest admiration of her teammates and coaches.”

NATALIE MITCHEM, BOLINGBROOK Senior Outside Hitter was a fouryear varsity starter who converted from a three-rotation middle to a six-rotation outside hitter as a junior.

She posted 396 kills, 46 aces, 43 blocks, and 257 digs this season.

She is on the Under Armour All-American Watch List, Top 100 Players in the Class of 2019, She is SouthWest Suburban Conference MVP her sophomore, junior and senior season, and was unanimously voted to the 2018 Moldenhauer Classic all-tournament team.

She holds the school record in kills with more than 800 in her career.

“Natalie is the driving force that flipped our varsity program from a 7-21 record in 2017 to 23-9 in 2018,” said coach Molly DeSerf.

She will play next season at Ball State University in Muncie, Ind. TAYLOR MORGAN, LOCKPORT Junior outside hitter paced the Porters with 213 kills to go with 21.5 blocks, 131 digs and 18 aces. She was named a member of the 2018 AVCA Phenom List.

“Taylor was our volume hitter who often went six rotations to become a back row threat,” said coach Nick Mraz. “She was a leader not only on the court but off as her positivity was infectious when her team needed it most.”

BELLA RAY, JCA Junior was named to the alltournament teams at the Metea Valley/Oswego East Tournament and the Glenbard East Autumnfest as well as all-ESCC. She posted 260 kills and 102 blocks for the Class 3A third-place Angels.

“Bella has been a dominant middle hitter this entire season.

We are a better team when she is in the front row because teams have a very hard time stopping her,” said coach Christine Scheibe. “She has a variety of different shots, and she has worked very hard over the course of the season to develop even more shots by working on new angles and improving her footwork. She has kept her hitting errors to a minimum with a kill percentage of 46.3 percent. She has set a school record for kills by a middle hitter. Bella has also been an excellent leader this year. As a captain, she has lead team activities and been a role model for her teammates.”

ZOEY SEPUT, MINOOKA Junior setter paced the young Indians with 860 assists to go along with 38 aces, 96 blocks and 263 digs.

She was all-tournament at Plainfield North and was first team All-Southwest Prairie Conference.

“This is her second year running our offense,” said coach Carrie Prosek. “She is a very talented set-

ter where opponents have a very hard time reading where she setting. We love her competitiveness and leadership that she brings to the court. Hands down the best setter in the area.”

KATIE SHOOK, PLAINFIELD CENTRAL The Alabama commit tallied 453 digs on the season to go along with 30 service aces and 46 assists.

MEKENZIE SMITH, PLAINFIELD NORTH Junior libero tallied 423 digs, 31 assists, 20 service aces and a 2.10 passer rating this year for the Tigers.

NATALIE STEFANSKI, JOLIET WEST Junior outside hitter was first team all-Southwest Prairie Conference and was all-tournament at the Peg Bryan Memorial Tourney, Glenbard West Invite and LW Central Autumn Knights Invite.

On the season, she posted 354 kills, 2298 digs, 29 blocks and 46 service aces.

LLY VAN EECKEREN, BENET Senior Creighton recruit tallied 741 assists, 161 digs, 115 kills, 70 blocks and 38 service aces in helping the Redwings to a third-place finish in Class 4A. She was all-tournament at Autumnfest and was named to the ESCC All-Conference team.

“She is the best blocking setter we have ever had,” said coach Brad Baker.

MADISEN WERDELL, MAINE SOUTH Hawks libero tallied 553 digs and 45 aces on the season.

8 films you didn’t know were filmed in Illinois

BY DANN GIRE FILM CRITIC OF THE (ARLINGTON HEIGHTS) DAILY HERALD Maybe Illinois has produced so many cool movies because it offers such a vastly diverse spectrum of locations to tell highly visual stories.

Or maybe our state has pumped out impressive pictures because the Illinois Film Office and Chicago Film Office cut through red tape for appreciative filmmakers.

Or, maybe Illinois seals those deals with its attractive 30-percent tax credit on film production costs. (Being the only state in the union with a diversity provision as part of its tax credits can’t hurt.)

Many local scenes turn up in iconic Illinois-filmed motion pictures such as “The Blues Brothers,” “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” “Home Alone,” “The Breakfast Club” and “The Fugitive.”

Here are eight others filmed at locations across the state that are worth a special mention, too.

1. “Dig Two Graves” — Hunter Adams’ horror tale hails from the comic book tradition of “Tales from the Crypt,” but it stands on its own as a crisply edited, surprising display of craftsmanship on a budget. Adams fell in love with the rich, diverse and truly creepy locations in several counties at the state’s southern tip, where he whisks us into a rural nightmare of Kubrickian symmetry. The railroad tunnel at Tunnel Hill in Johnson County figures in, as do Marion’s town square, downtown Vienna and Ferne Clyffe State Park near Goreville.

2. “Munger Road” — St. Charles writer/director Nicholas Smith and a crew of young filmmakers from Chicago’s Columbia College shot this atmospheric “suburban legend” horror tale over 16 nights in Bartlett, St. Charles, Elburn, Geneva and Sugar Grove. Smith was 26 at the time. Set during St. Charles’ annual Scarecrow Festival, the story involves an escaped serial killer and two teen couples

stuck over a set of railroad tracks allegedly haunted by the ghosts of children killed in a fiery crash.

3. “Groundhog Day” — The town of Punxsutawney got so miffed that Harold Ramis chose suburban Woodstock to play the Pennsylvania town in Danny Rubin’s supernatural comedy that it refused to allow the real Punxsutawney Phil to appear in the movie. Too bad that Punxsutawney’s Town Center didn’t look good on camera, according to Ramis. Woodstock turned its movie fame into an annual “Groundhog Day” festival.

4. “Contagion” — Steven Soderbergh’s 2011 virus-pandemic thriller shot scenes all over the suburbs, most notably at the old Sherman Hospital in Elgin and the Central Elementary School in Wilmette. A key grocery scene (with Matt Damon) was filmed in downtown Western Springs. Even Waukegan got into the act, with its Amstutz Expressway acting the role of Chicago’s Dan Ryan Expressway.

5. “The Fury” — Much of Brian De Palma’s stylistically sleazy 1978 horror movie was shot in Chicago. It used the same room from Chicago’s now-extinct Plymouth Hotel that would later be used in 1980’s “The Blues Brothers.” But the film’s best claim to fame would be the deadly carnival ride filmed in the once-immensely popular Old Chicago indoor amusement park in Bolingbrook.

6. “The Untouchables” — Brian De Palma returned to the Windy City to shoot a 1987 version of the popular TV series starring Robert Stack and created one of the two best films to showcase the city of Chicago as an essential presence on the silver screen.

The highlight? The slow-motion gunfight on the steps at Union Station, a breathlessly constructed homage to the famous Odessa Steps Sequence from Sergei Eisenstein’s seminal 1926 silent Russian masterpiece “Battleship Potemkin.”

7. “The Dark Knight” — The second film to showcase the city of Chicago as an essential presence on the silver screen. Except now, the dark and gritty Windy City plays the role of the even darker and grittier Gotham City in Christopher Nolan’s 2008 Batman movie. The highlight? A carefully planned explosive flip of an 18-wheeler upside down in the middle of LaSalle Street. No digital effects needed.

8. “Lucas” — This 1986 high school coming-of-age drama shot several scenes in Glen Ellyn (including Glenbard West High School, Lake Ellyn Park and The Glen Theatre) plus Highland Park High School and, most notably, Arlington High School in Arlington Heights, which had been closed before being transformed into the Christian Liberty Academy. The movie gave Glen Ellyn actor Tom Hodges his first speaking role.

How to ease kids’ transition to a new school

Being the new kid in school can be a tall order for youngsters. Children who change schools may face a host of challenges that studies suggest can affect both their social and academic development.

In a 2010 study that followed students who entered kindergarten in 1998 through 2007, the Government Accountability Office found that 13 percent of students changed schools four or more times by the end of eighth grade. Such mobility can adversely affect students, as a study of 13,000 students in the city of Chicago found that children who had changed schools four or more times by the sixth grade were roughly a year behind their classmates.

In addition to the toll transferring schools can take on their academic performance, students also may experience difficulty assimilating into their new schools.

Though there’s no formula to make such transitions easier, parents can try various strategies to help their kids successfully adjust to new schools.

Speak with children about the transition. Pathways.org, a not-for-profit organization devoted to providing free child development information to parents and health professionals, recommends parents speak with their children about transitioning to a new school. Encourage

children to share what excites and worries them about the transition. The way parents discuss transitions can go a long way toward shaping how kids view the change.

Stay true to your routine. Pathways also recommends parents of students who are transitioning to a new school do their best to replicate first day of school routines from years past. Some familiar traditions might help calm kids’ concerns about their first day in a new school.

Assimilate into a new community before the school year begins. The education resource Edweek.org notes that the most common causes of students changing schools are residential moves related to parents’ jobs or financial instability. Parents on the lookout for a new job or those who may need to relocate for financial reasons may want to delay moving until the current school year has ended. Moving between school years gives families time to acclimate to their new communities. That means kids will get time to make new friends. Some familiar faces on the first day at a new school can go a long way toward alleviating the fears children may have.

Volunteer at your child’s new school.

Parental involvement at school can have a profound impact on children.
