he maine community Youth assistance foundation invited an addiction specialist to talk about the risk marijuana use poses to adolescents, specifically how it can lead to heroin addiction. “Once people start smoking [marijuana] as a coping mechanism, they start to look for something stronger,” said Dr. Alicen J. McGowan, a nationally certified specialist working with adults and teens struggling with addictions for the past 30 years. “Fourty-nine percent of people develop a tolerance for marijuana and they are on a trajectory for heroin.”
