McGowan, a nationally certified specialist working with adults and teens struggling with addictions for the past 30 years. “Fourty-nine percent of people develop a tolerance for marijuana and they are on a trajectory for heroin.”

Officer charged with battery, official misconduct resigns Last week, the Village notified Michael Hart it would seek to terminate him

A Skokie police officer charged with aggravated battery and official misconduct by the Cook County’s State Attorney’s office resigned his position. The news came from a statement released by the Village of Skokie and Skokie Police officials Nov. 15.

“Last week, the Village notified Michael Hart that based upon its internal investigation, it would seek to terminate him for violations of Skokie Police Department rules and regulations,” said the statement.

According to the village’s agreement with the patrol officers’ union, Hart was given ten days to decide whether he would require the Village to file charges seeking his termination or proceed via grievance arbitration.

However before that ten-day period ended, Hart, a 19-year veteran of the Skokie Police

The charges are in connection to a March 10 surveillance video that reportedly shows Officer Michael Hart, 43, of Gurnee, pushing a Chicago woman into cell lockup so hard she suffered fractured bones in her face that required reconstructive surgery.

The alleged victim, Cassandra Feuerstein, 47, also experienced dental and vision problems from the incident with Hart.

She now has a titanium plate inserted into her cheek.

Hart, who has been employed as a full time Skokie police officer since 1994, was on duty and assisting in fingerprinting and photographing Fuerstein, who had been arrested on DUI charges March 10. While processing her at the Skokie Police Department, prosecutors

McGowan said parents should be on the lookout for flu-like symptoms that don’t have an associated fever, as often this is a sign of substance withdrawal.

Additionally, she said parents who think they can smell their kids smoking marijuana or will see track marks if they inject heroin need to realize that substance abusers will be very good about hiding what they’re doing. For instance, among adolescents it’s considered

“I think more than anything people should know there are not any charges associated with [TVDL],” said Monica Trevino, spokesperson for the Illinois

Trevino said that one scam she’s seen since the application process went live involved individuals attempting to charge applicants for the “2013 Rules of the Road” workbook, which is free both online and at area Department of Motor Vehicle locations.

Government subsidizing Bike Lane Fever Do you know why we’ve become so bike crazy lately?

I don’t mean that people ride their bikes more than ever, but that the heavy hand of government seems to be pushing bike riding onto the general public.

The government is subsidizing bike rentals so that people can ride bikes. If people like riding bikes so much, why does the government have to subsidize it? What are the central planners up to this time?

I suspect it is a subvirus of the Green Disease, the presumption that we’ll save Mother Gaia if only we get

people to live how we want them to live. I was down at Union Station where I saw a rack of about 50 bikes, all just sitting there. Perhaps 30 degree weather, with a windchill down to the 20s and teens, caused the bikes to not be rented that day. You’d think the thoughtful central planners would familiarize themselves with local weather patterns. We’re not Berkley California, despite their best efforts. We have challenging, exciting weather like sleet, hail and the always thrilling “freezing” rain! We also get something else in large piles. It’s white and the Eskimos have, like, a thousand words for

What’s changed about human beings that the old bike policy, you remember it was called liberty, isn’t good enough for the 21st century? Do they really think that a policy designed to put bikes in harms way is a good idea? The bike lanes, demarked by solid white lines that sometimes disappear when the road gets to narrow (What do you do in that case?

Are you authorized to crush the bikes between your car and parked cars at that point?) ruined good commuter streets and increased travel times and traffic snarls. How is that good for Mother Gaia? Elston Avenue looks like something out of a Mad Max movie or perhaps out of Running Man with Arnold

Schwarzenegger (a pre-Hunger Games-type movie).

Worse, bikers don’t follow traffic laws, run lights, zip in and out of traffic, but, as convenient to them, want to be treated like a car. I sat behind one that was making a left turn from the left turn lane on a green arrow. A long line of cars waited behind him as he got peddling up to 5 mph, but then the arrow changed to red, too bad, so sad to all you internal combustion Mother Gaia killers.

Can’t common sense prevail here? Why are a small group of bikers and Watermelons (Green outside, but Red inside) determining what our streets, built for cars, look like?

Peradventure, our elected officials are remembering the

time last summer when we all stormed Village Hall demanding our bike lanes as we shook our pitch forks and waved our flaming torches. They’ll not soon forget that incident and the terror they felt, or am I just making it up? Are bike lanes a higher priority than lower taxes or economic growth?

Given that for all of the 20th century America, Illinois, Cook County and Niles survived without dedicated bike lanes, what’s changed now? Nothing, but the nanny-staters finding a new shiny that they get to toy with our lives over; dedicated bike lanes are a dumb idea that our ancestors rejected and so should we. Want to ride your bike, go ahead, but do it without forcing me to live your way.

Park Ridge residential fire results in no injuries Damage estimated to be $30,000 in detached garage fire The Park Ridge Fire Department was dispatched for a fire in a detached garage behind a single-family residence in the 1200 block of South

Washington Avenue Nov. 10.

The neighbor to the south of this address noticed smoke and after stepping outside saw the fire and called 911 around

6:49 p.m. Park Ridge Fire Department crews responded and arrived on scene within 5 minutes.

Upon arrival, crews found a two-car garage to the rear of the residence with smoke showing.

A firehose was brought up the driveway and the fire was attacked via the service door

Man pays $5,000 to scammer posing as IRS A Niles man thought he was paying unpaid income taxes

when he transferred nearly $5,000 to a caller claiming to be with the Internal Revenue Service. 61-year-old victim received a phone call on Nov. 5 from a man who told victim he owed $4,970 in back taxes to the IRS and needed to pay up that very day.The caller instructed the man to buy prepaid debit cards and then call him back with the card verification codes so the money could be transferred, Niles police said.

Authorities say as of Nov. 8, it was the only incident of its kind to have been reported to Niles police.The IRS on Oct. 31 issued a warning to taxpayers regarding the phone scam, which has been reported throughout the country. According to the warning, actual IRS agents “will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer.”

Taxpayers who think they may owe back taxes are advised to contact the IRS at (800) 829-1040 if they receive a call

from someone claiming to be with the IRS. Those who have no reason to believe they owe money are asked to report the call to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at (800) 366-4484.

Bomb turns out to be battery The Cook County Bomb Squad was called in when a suspiciouslooking device was discovered at the base of a Niles streetlight Nov. 7. The device ended up being a battery the type used in remote control cars.

Car stuck in cement A Mercedes-Benz got stuck in a wet concrete in front of the Park Ridge Dominicks Nov. 14.

Sources at CDOT, IDOT and the Chicago Fire Department had no record of the incident. No word on how the man ended up in the wet concrete in the first place, or how he managed to get out.

Norwood Park Fire Protection District on automatic aid. No injuries were reported. The family was able to return to their home. The damage is estimated to be $30,000. Park Ridge Fire Investigators are continuing their investigation into this fire at this time.

Morton Grove Library director accepts job in St. Charles

Reports of Pam Leffler stepping down as director at Morton Grove were confirmed when the St. Charles Public Library District Board of Trustees approved Leffler’s appointment as their new director Nov. 13.

“I was attracted to the St. Charles position for a variety of reasons,” said Leffler via email with The Bugle. She said that it was the reputation of the St. Charles library, its ties to the community and the fact it’s a larger library and a “step ‘up’” in terms her career). Leffler and her husband also live in the area, own property there and her husband also owns a business there.

“It was a hard decision to

make because I have truly enjoyed my time at Morton Grove and am proud of the changes we’ve implemented,” said Leffler. “It is my hope that the board and staff can build on those changes and continue to provide the outstanding service for which Morton Grove Public Library is known.”

Leffler was the director for Morton Grove Public Library for the past year and five months. Before that she was the assistant director for the Carol Stream Public Library for about 15 years.

Leffler said she was excited but also a bit nervous of her new position. Saying she had big shoes to fill as she will be replacing current St. Charles Director Diana Brown, who been with the library for about 39 years.

Leffler’s resignation from Morton Grove should be effective Dec. 20 and her first day in St. Charles will be Jan. 2, the day after Brown officially retires.

Board President Victoria Haines said Leffler was a perfect fit for the goals and policies of the St. Charles library.

The Morton Grove Library board of Trustees has not yet said if assistant directors Kevin Justie and Natalya Fishman will reassume the co-director roles they had before Leffler was hired.

Requests for comment the Morton Grove Library board were not immediately returned.

However a special board meeting is reportedly being arranged for 7 p.m. on Nov. 18 to discuss the upcoming vacancy.

Hawks end season in quarterfinals

Saturday afternoon started out promising for Maine South in its bid to advance to the Class 8A semifinals for the first time since winning the state title in 2010.

Clay Burdelik turned a Brian Collis screen pass into a 15-yard gain on the Hawks’ opening play of the game vs. Loyola Academy—the upper bracket’s top seed. From then on, however, it was all Ramblers.

The Ramblers, with a stiff 20 mph wind at their backs during the first quarter, complemented by a lockdown defense, shot out to a 21-0 lead by quarter’s end en route to ousting the Hawks, 35-0.

Coach Dave Inserra summed it up the Hawks’ afternoon when he said afterward, “It wasn’t our day.”

The Hawks committed five turnovers—a fumble and four pass interceptions; three by defensive back Jack Gleason.

Meanwhile, Loyola stuffed the Hawks’ usually reliable ground game, holding Burdelik and Justin Fahey to a combined four yards during the first half.

The defeat not only ended what was shaping up to be a promising playoff run for Maine South, which had dominated its first two postseason foes (Niles West and Oak Park-River Forest), it also marked the first time the Hawks have ever been shut out during Inserra’s 13 years as coach.

“Hat’s off to Loyola on both sides of the ball,” Inserra said.

“They executed well; today they were the better team.”

The Ramblers (11-1), who face Stevenson (10-2) in this weekend’s semifinals, scored on each of their first three possessions. Loyola benefited from good field position on each drive as the Hawks had to put

into the wind.

“We knew the wind was going to be significant and a difference,” Inserra said. “You’d like to get a couple of first downs here and there but then you’ve got to get stops defensively.”

Owen Buscaglia’s 19-yard TD pass from quarterback Jack Penn, followed three minutes

later by Penn’s 1-yard sneak, put the Ramblers ahead 14-0. Senior tailback Julius Holley, who had over 100 yards rushing in the Ramblers’ 24-0 victory over Notre Dame the previous week, broke loose for a 33-yard scoring run on fourth down with 28.5 seconds left in the quarter.

“We couldn’t run the ball so

we were limited in what we could do,” Inserra said. “That changed it, the wind changed it.

We just couldn’t get out of that first quarter. They were tough; they had a lot of answers for us defensively and we didn’t have many defensively.”

But the touchdown that really broke the Hawks’ back occurred

with 32 seconds to go before intermission. On another fourthdown situation from, ironically, the 33-yard-line, Penn floated a pass to Joe Dixon, who took it into the end zone.

Area duo headed to state meet in two events

Jenna Zitkus glanced up at the clock after finishing her heat of the 100-yard backstroke at Saturday’s Glenbrook South sectional, and the astonishment on her face said it all.

Zitkus, who qualified for state in the backstroke each of the past two seasons, swam a personal best of 56.68 seconds to place second. It’s the fourth straight year the Maine South senior has made it to state. She’s qualified each year in the 100 butterfly—her fourth-place time of 57.49 on Saturday was under the state qualifying standard of 58.94—as well as three times in the backstroke.

In addition, Zitkus has been part of several state-qualifying Maine South relay teams during her career. And she’ll once again compete in a relay event at this weekend’s state meet at New Trier: the 200 freestyle relay.

Niles West will be represented at state by Emma Helgeson,

who took the 100 freestyle and finished runner-up in the 200 freestyle.

New Trier placed first in the team standings with 275 points while Loyola Academy was second (243). The Hawks were sixth (84), Niles West 10th (54) and Maine East 12th (6).

MAINE SOUTH “I knew I was going fast, but I didn’t know I was going that fast,” Zitkus said after the backstroke race. “That is by far the best I’ve ever done.”

Maine South coach Don Kura commended Zitkus for the way she’s worked and paid attention to detail during practice throughout the season. He said Zitkus might have been surprised by her time in the backstroke, but he wasn’t.

Demons look to contend for CSL North title

Maine East has taken its lumps over the years, but last year was a turning point of the program.

This year, the Demons are going for more.

With four starters returning from their 15-15, 5-5 team of a year ago, the Demons are a favorite to claim the CSL North title in 2013-14. If they do, the conference crown would be the program’s first. And should they win a regional championship, it would be the team’s first since 1982.

Even though the potential exists for the Demons to have one of their best seasons in years, head coach Karol Hanusiak regularly reminds her team that it hasn’t accomplished anything yet.

“I tell girls that if you think teams are going to roll over because you’re seniors, you’ve got to put it out there,” she said.

“I’m very happy with our focus and how hard they’re working in practice. We don’t take it for granted. It’s been about 15 years since East has had this type of talent coming through. We’re not starting from square one, and we’re so far ahead of where we’ve ever been.”

Hanusiak says it’s nice to be in a position where winning conference is an achievable objective.

“I would be lying if I didn’t say that’s one of our goals,” she said.

“But you have to keep your focus and not get ahead of ourselves.”

Senior forwards Maria Protic and Shaylee Sloan, an All-CSL North performer last year, are back, along with senior Elanta Slowek, whom Hanusiak said “worked her tail off” during

the off-season. Slowek got on a nutritional program, as well as a speed and jumping regiment.

“If I had to pick a most improved (player) and hardest worker, she would be it,” Hanusiak said. “I’m really excited about how much better she’s gotten.”

The Demons’ backcourt is something to get excited about, too. Sophomore Janelle Alba Garner, who could be vying for all-conference honors this season, got better and better as the season progressed, and senior starter Jazlene Gonzalez is solid, too. Senior Alyssa Matej also will see lots of playing time.

“Her (Alba Garner) and Jazlene are just really talented point guards,” Hanusiak said. “I was on her (Alba Garner) a lot last year to get into offense more. I hope she breaks out a little and becomes more of an offensive threat. She’s coming along nice.”

•Maine South head coach Mark Smith estimates that the Hawks lost 76 percent of their scoring from last year’s 27-6 sectional finalist team to graduation.Among the Hawks’ key graduation losses are all-state forward Jacqui Grant and guard Regan Carmichael, both Division I players (Grant is at Illinois; Carmichael at St. Louis University).

“That might be the highest percentage lost in my eight years of coaching,” he said.

That would appear to be a difficult stat to overcome.

However, Smith is optimistic the Hawks can move forward, compete and win with a combination of returnees—eight of their 13 varsity players are seniors—and those moving up from the underclass ranks.

“There are kids waiting in the wings,” he said. “I feel real positive about the kids who are

filling in. I’m excited how hard they practice. We have a tough schedule and we’ll see where the chips fall, but by the end of the year, I’m hoping we’re playing really good basketball.”

Senior forward Hailey Schoneman (6-1) is the Hawks’ lone returning starter. Katherine Miles (6-0), who moves from

the post to guard, saw playing time off the bench, as did guards Megan Roberts and Kelly Kons, and forward Emily McGuire (all are seniors).

“Our practices have been really outstanding,” Smith said.

“They understand the system really well. We lost offensive firepower, but I’m really excited

about team we have back.”

To begin the season, Smith is looking at Kons to start at point guard, and sophomore Sam Fagenholz—whom he says is the Hawks’ best pure shooter—to get the starting nod at shooting guard.

The Ramblers were able to exact some revenge on the Hawks, who had ended their season each year in the playoffs between 2008 and 2010—including the 2010 loss in which Loyola led late in the game.

“It was in the back of our minds that game three years ago,” Penn said. “We knew if we came out with high energy, a fast-paced offense and defense and special teams that we could take it to these guys. It’s all good coming

out with a ‘W.’ ” The Hawks chalked up plenty of W’s during the season—nine in a row, to be exact, after dropping their first two contests to Montini and Wheaton Warreville South. “(Starting the season) 0-2, they could have put their heads down,” Inserra said,“but they came back, won conference the conference championship for the 13th time in a row, and battled through a lot of injuries and stuck together.

It was a great group to coach.”

Inserra saluted his seniors, who

were instrumental in leading the charge to another CSL South crown. Offensively on Saturday, wideout Vinny Labus finished with six catches for 64 yards, and quarterback Alec Basso—who started the first two games this season behind center prior to Collis taking over as the starter— played most of the second half.

Basso was 11 of 17 for 113 yards.

Senior Kacie Simkins is a returning letterwinner, and senior Alex Galanopoulos—who

missed the entire season last year due to an injury—also is back.

Galanopoulos started for Niles West as a sophomore. Jaylen Estrada, one of four sophomores on the varsity club, will be counted on to help out in the backcourt and do some scoring.

“We are going to be a very young team this year,” Konsewicz said. “Although we may have some growing pains early in the season, we will look to finish strong.”

“I’m just going to have fun,” she said. “It’s my last year. I’m happy with whatever I do, how I do. I’m happy with my times right now, and if I do them again, I will be very happy.”

Kura also was happy with how the 200 freestyle relay came through. The quartet, consisting of Zitkus, returning state qualifier Hannah Ferstel, junior Erin Patrick and sophomore Keanan Bender, finished sixth, but was 5/10ths of a second under the state cut with a time of 1:39.21.

“We knew going in today that it was going to be really close,” he said. “People had to have some

The 200 is Helgeson’s signature race;she won the conference title at the CSL South meet the week before, plus she normally races in the 500 freestyle. However, Niles West coach Jason Macejak talked with Helgeson several days before the sectional meet, and they decided to put her in the 100.

The strategy obviously paid off.

“We thought that maybe just getting out of the 5(00) and going into the 100 where you have more of the strategy of just getting out the blocks and going was better,” Macejak said.

“She not only qualified (for state) in (both) her events but she

MAINE EAST The Demons didn’t have anyone qualify for state, but coach Peter Przekota pointed out the progress that sophomore Alyssa Kaewwilai has made this year. Kaewwilai missed all of last season after she tore a ligament in her left elbow.

Kaewwilai took second in the 100 breaststroke and also was fourth in the 100 freestyle at the CSL North meet. It’s a performance that he believes she can build on for next season.

“It was good for her to get this experience,” Przekota said.

“We really tapered down for conference; we wanted that to be our focus meet. This meet’s really fast, and we’re not at the level of the top teams here.” mike@buglenewspapers.com

Learn how to lead from a legend Former USF coach Pat Sullivan authors book on leadership

Former University of St. Francis coach Pat Sullivan was a leader for the better part of his adult life.

As a coach for 34 years, he led his teams to more than 500 athletic victories.

As an administrator, he led his university to athletic success.

Now, three years after retiring from coaching, he is back leading again. This time he is doing it by way of his new book,“ATTITUDE: The Cornerstone of Leadership.”

A native of Joliet and an alumnus of both Joliet Catholic High School and Lewis University (‘65), Sullivan has spoken to many a room about attitude and leadership and what it takes to be a good leader in athletics, business and life and at the encouragement of former players Randy Stelter and Tom Kennedy, he decided to put pen to paper and share his message with the masses.

“Those two guys knew I had been speaking on attitude and leadership for nearly 30 years,” Sullivan said. “They encouraged me to write a book and since I am retired now, I had the time to do it.”

Sullivan, a member of five athletic halls of fame, refers to three leaders he work with over the years - Gordie Gillespie, Bishop Roger Kaffer and Dr. John C. Orr - and looks at how they impacted his life and made him the leader he is.

In the book,he breaks down the word ATTITUDE into an acronym and assigns a word to each letter to define how the right attitude makes the right leader.

Sullivan was looking to get

his message out to those in a leadership position as well as those who aspire to be leaders.

“There is an awful lot written on attitude,” Sullivan said. “There are a plethora written on leadership, but I know of very few, if any, books that connect the two.A big part of the audience is athletic leaders and business leaders.”

So, what makes a former coach and athletic administrator the right person to educate business leaders?

“I am finding that today in business, they are not talking about directing or managing, they talk about coaching people,” Sullivan said.“So, we thought that if a coach could translate that to a business leader and get them to consider on their own attitude and see where they could change some things.”

Sullivan said he is hoping his readers take the same approach to his message as he did when attending clinics over the years.

“Over my career, I probably went to more than 1,000 coaching clinics where coaches taught other coaches,” he said. “I always thought that if I could come away with two or three things from each clinic that I could apply to my teaching, it was a successful clinic.That is the ultimate hope in the book.We want a reader to say, ‘I never thought of that.’ If there are two or three things they can take away, we are successful.”

As a coach, there is no more public and dissected leader out there and Sullivan understood how to deal with that scrutiny.

“As a coach, you make a decision during the course of the game, you make a decision of when to go into your delay game and half of the people in the

crowd are saying, ‘What in God’s name is he doing? And then there is playing time.You never get into coaching to hurt kids, but you do hurt them. You decide who plays and who doesn’t play as much and that hurts them. And the scrutinization, how about when the game is over and you get in the locker room and the TV people, the written media and the radio people asking questions

and you have to give the reasons you made the decisions you did.

The toughest scrutiny for me as a coach was me. After a game at 3 a.m. when you are laying there in bed wondering why you made that decision.”

Body language is much more eloquent than words Q. Over the last year, I have been repeatedly surprised by the hidden agendas of my boss, coworkers and clients. They say one thing and then do another. I do listen carefully to what people say.

How can I figure out what is really going on without being psychic?

A. Only 7 percent of what people at work actually mean can be found in their words.The rest of the content can only be understood if you pay attention to the tone of voice and body language of the people in your office.

There are two brain levels that influence how people act.

The first, our rational mind, is who we think we are. The selection of words is made by our rational mind. The second, and far more powerful level, is our unconscious mind. Our unconscious influences our body language and tone of voice.

The most difficult part of

understanding human beings is that we all are relatively unaware of our unconscious mind. Other people often attempt to give us feedback that we sounded angry, or appeared hurt, but mostly we will deny this information. However, these subterranean emotional currents that flow through our unconscious mind are the prime drivers behind our behavior.

We tend to be good at rationalizing our unconscious behavior. For instance, we say we didn’t want to scold a coworker; we just wanted to be helpful. We may explain that we didn’t want to publicly embarrass our controlling boss; we corrected him in public because we were being accurate.

We have a million ways to avoid acknowledging that we actually were mad, sad or scared, because these unconscious emotional reactions seem immature.

In your next boring meeting, try this experiment. Tune out

the words and just watch the body language and tone of voice.

What do you suddenly notice about the agendas of the people in the meeting that you would have missed before?

You can see how confusing it is for all of us to walk around receiving and giving communications where we say one thing but actually mean another. To add to this complexity, if someone else tries to point out our body language or tone, we’ll get mad and deny the validity of those data.

So how can we listen when the body talks without getting in trouble? Start by pretending people don’t mean what they say and watch their body language and tone of voice like a hawk.

Don’t confront anyone with your new amazing insights about their unconscious. Do proceed by using the information you just gathered to see others’ hidden agendas and real goals.

Also pay close attention to what people around you tell you about your unconscious communication. Rather than getting annoyed next time

We tend to be good at rationalizing our unconscious behavior. For instance, we say we didn’t want to scold a coworker; we just wanted to be helpful. someone says you looked or sounded upset, contemplate this person may be picking up your nonverbal communication. We can get to know our unconscious if we stop defending who we think we are and start listening to how others experience us.

We all leak out a symphony of meaning in our facial expressions and vocal intonations that are dramatically more accurate than the words we say.When you have to pick between listening when the body talks and believing the words, go with the body language and you’ll rarely be wrong.

Q. I sacrifice a lot to do an amazing job at work, and I’m not seeing any rewards.

He just finished his sophomore year, but he told us the other day he has dropped out of school and isn’t going back.He’s been playing in a band on weekends, and he has this vague idea of becoming a musician.We don’t think this is a good idea, but we still want to be supportive … just not too supportive.We want him to be financially independent, as well.

How should we handle this?

Karen Dear Karen, This kid is about to have some problems. Not only has he made a bad decision, but he should have consulted with you guys before he quit school. He owed you that much if you were supporting him this whole time.

In my opinion, you and your husband have one job right now.

That job is to stand back and let life happen to this kid. If he thinks he’s a man, let him go out and

prove it. Wish him the best and tell him you hope he becomes the rich and famous rock star he wants to be. But make sure he understands you’re not going to support him financially when he’s doing something you both feel is a bad idea.

Understand that I’m not suggesting you turn your backs on this guy. Let him know how much you both love him and that you’ll be praying for him. Invite him over for dinner once in a while, stay in touch, and make sure he knows that family deals like Thanksgiving and Christmas are still business as usual. However, as far as paying for his rent, utilities, gas, food and cell phone bill? That stuff’s not happening.This may sound tough, but it was his decision.

In the end, let him know you’ll be there to help just like before if he wises up and decides to finish school. But until then? Little boy,

you signed up for this trip!

Jack Dear Jack, If you’re following my plan, the first thing you should do is set aside an emergency fund of $1,000. That’s Baby Step 1.

Next comes Baby Step 2, which means paying off all of your debt except for your house.This would include your car. During this time you should temporarily stop any kind of investing and retirement contributions.

Once the only debt left is your mortgage, it’s time to move on to Baby Step 3. Now you concentrate on growing your emergency fund to the point where you have three to six months of expenses set aside. Once this is done, you can attack Baby Step 4, which is investing 15 percent of your pretax income for retirement. For you, it would mean re-starting the contributions to your 401(k).

The rest of the plan goes like

this. Baby Step 5 is putting money into your kids’ college funds, while Baby Step 6 is putting everything you can scrape together towards paying off the house early. After that comes the real fun. Baby Step 7 is the point where you simply build wealth and give.

Follow these steps, Jack, and I promise you’ll have lots of fun and lots of cash. You’ll have financial peace!

Bokelman was taken into custody on the morning of Nov. 13 after surrendering to District 15 Investigators, and he was processed at a District 15 facility in Park Ridge. Dozens of Illinois State Police officers attended the hearing in Skokie

where Bokelman was charged.

Bokelman’s next court date is Dec. 6 at 9 a.m. at the Skokie District Courthouse and his bail was set at $125,000.

“He feels heartfelt sympathy for the trooper and his surviving wife,” said David Studenroth, Bokelman’s defense attorney.

Studenroth said his client tried to get Sauter out of the wreckage but was unable to because of flames at the accident. He also said that Bokelman was out on bond and had returned to Wisconsin until his next court date.

Stressed-out family caregivers also need care, personal time

Before his recent death, my father was in the hospital for the better part of four months and the experience was both agonizing and illuminating. My family had been through a number of health issues with my father, but none so long, drawn-out and chronic as the most recent one. We are fortunate in that the majority of his care was almost entirely covered by Medicare, so the financial effect of the illness was limited. But the emotional drain was enormous.

Throughout the process, my family developed a number of coping techniques from which I hope others can benefit. These ideas are not new, but they’re good reminders for families who are facing illnesses and the friends who want to support them.

1. Create and maintain notes for the patient

It’s helpful for one of the caregivers to take notes at doctors’ meetings.Invariably,someone new comes on the scene, asking for a brief history-one that provides more than just the data on a medical chart. Additionally, while patients and loved ones are present during medical consultations, their minds are often racing, which makes it difficult to retain important details. The notes provide a way to review what transpired later, when they are able to absorb the information.

My sister and I alternated the note-taking role and maintained a lengthy document, with every doctor’s name and contact information, which was instrumental in staying on top of the process. It was a way to exert just a tiny bit of control during an out-of-control time in our lives.

2. Take off a day from time to time

It was hard for my mother to not be in the hospital, but sometimes my sister and I had to step in and plead with her to take off a day and to rest.The grueling emotional demands on a caregiver can have a physical impact, too. Check in with all of the caregivers and also encourage them to take care of themselves.

3. Communicate with each other

From logistics, like who’s going to be at the hospital and when; to larger issues like important medical decisions, it’s important to make time to talk to one another. If you have a larger family, you’ll need to determine the best way to do this - a friend told me that she and her siblings would conduct weekly conference calls to catch up! Regardless of the method, the point is to make sure that everyone is on the same page, including the patient.

4. Ask for help from friends

We have a small family, but my parents have two sets of best friends, who were unbelievable in every way you could imagine.They would help with mundane tasks like driving and meal planning and were also the beacons of emotional support that we needed. They helped disseminate information to other friends, relieving my mother of the burden of having to be on the phone constantly.

Thankfully, the larger circle of friends checked in on us, but not in a way that made us feel like we had to respond to them. In this way, technology is wonderful: A simple text or e-mail that says, “I’m thinking about you and sending lots of good energy” is great. Conversely, it’s tough to field questions like“What’s happening?”

A good rule of thumb to think about when sending a note to

caregivers is to try to express your concern without requiring them to do anything in return.

5. Use the medical community

My father was cared for at New York University Hospital, a large city institution.While many would think that the size of a place like NYU would be impersonal, we found the opposite to be true.The

doctors, nurses, social workers and aides were incredibly caring, helpful and collaborative.We didn’t hesitate to ask for help, but here’s the key: We always expressed our gratitude for everything they did for us. These professionals are generally overworked and stressed, so a thank you, a plate of cookies, or a smile was always appreciated.
